The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. The best TIkTok trends act as a kind of criticism, latching onto an aspect of a song and showing it in a new light. This week on TikTok, the community shined a light on old hits by Destiny’s Child and Rae Sremmurd alongside high-octane bangers by WILLOW and WHOKILLEDXIX. Take a look at what made TikTok tick this week:

No strangers to viral dance trends like the 2016 “Black Beatles” Mannequin Challenge, Rae Sremmurd has a new dance trend on their hands with “My X” (406.3K+ creations) making waves on TikTok. Though moderate in tempo, Swae Lee’s quick flow and high-energy verse have made the 2015 track a hit amongst TikTok creators. Creator Lesley Gonzalez (@yodamnmomma) kicked off the dance trend at the beginning of the month, switching tempos to match Swae Lee’s verse. Swae Lee even showed her some love for creating the dance in the comments of her post. Users on the platform have taken to the dance trend to show off their moves, whether with their cool moms, their best friends, or in their freshly-used softball jerseys.
Her brother Jaden got attention last year when he did a merch collab with TikTok, but 2021 has been WILLOW’s year to shine on the app. In late April, WILLOW on-boarded with a bang, sharing a clip of her Travis Barker-produced rock song “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l.” Since then, “t r a n s p a r e n t s o u l” has become a mainstay on TikTok, generating over 55k video creations, primarily from the world of Haircare TikTok, its aggressive vibes adding an edge to impulsive dye jobs or bizarre crafts projects. On her own page, WILLOW has been feeding fans’ enthusiasm for the song, demonstrating how to play the song’s riff on guitar for those who want to cover the song on the app, sharing clips from the song’s music video, and generating over 12 million views on an excerpt of her recent Fallon performance.
TikTok has a unique power to revive hits from the past. In recent weeks, the iconic 90s R&B tune “Bills, Bills, Bills” by Destiny’s Child has reached trending status, inspiring over 128k video creations. For the trend, creators are using the sound to express what they look for in a partner as they cover their face and slap the air in a provocative motion. The sound is perfect for creators who look for zodiac sign compatibility, seek reassurance, and especially for those who have a very specific taste in partners who wear 5-inch inseam shorts and Bass Pro Shop hats.
Glitchcore duo WHOKILLEDXIX is having a major moment on TikTok with their genre-bending track “spy?” Garnering over 136.7K creations so far, the track has become a hit with the TikTok community for its mixture of alternative, punk, EDM, and trap vibes. Because of its reach, creators use it to soundtrack practically any situation, including setting daily reminders to annoy your cute cat, displaying fun video games to play with a significant other, or joking about astronaut aesthetics. After going viral on TikTok, the song peaked at #7 on Spotify’s US Viral 50.
With a propulsive, disco-adjacent beat and trancelike repetition of the titular phrase, “Nobody” by Mitski lends itself very well to TikTok interpretation (113k video creations). Though “Nobody” was the source of a dance trend in the Fall of 2020, the song truly took off in the past week with a new trend for when creators wish they could run away from a situation as quickly as possible. Dial up Mitski’s sad-on-the-dancefloor anthem whenever someone suggests that you need to get a summer job, someone uses outdated slang, or gives useful, but unwanted romantic advice.
18-year-old musician Rachel Sandy is making waves on the platform with her pitch-perfect impressions of beloved singer-songwriters. Using her acoustic guitar and her home studio, she crafts original songs in the style of artists like Lorde, Taylor Swift, and the aforementioned Mitski. Since joining TikTok in mid-May with her evocation of Phoebe Bridgers, Rachel has racked up nearly 15 million video views and grew a following of over 240k. Rachel’s video about Maggie Rogers drew the attention of Maggie herself, who duetted the video on her own page.

TikTok’s LIVE Headstream series continues this week with Rivers Cuomo of Weezer. For 30 minutes, on Fridays at 4PM PT/7PM ET, Headstream invites artists to introduce their new music, interact with fans in the live chat, and get into some real talk with their toughest interviewer yet—themselves. The Background:

Taleban Dooda always had a voice–a combination of distinctly Floridian style and irresistibly catchy melody, has made the 19-year-old rapper one of the most exciting new rap voices coming out of the South. Hailing from East Tampa, Dooda had few options to avoid the violence that lurked outside his door. When he injured his knee in his 9th grade year, ending his football dreams, Dooda turned his attention to music. He began by recording himself covering other people’s songs — inspired by his love for artists like Bruno Mars, John Legend, and Sam Smith — before moving on to his own original compositions. Influenced by artists like NBA Youngboy, Polo G, and NoCap, Taleban Dooda decided to become a rapper.

For Dooda, 2020 was all about consistency, as he continued to drop a steady stream of strong singles throughout the year. In September, he released “Dis Dooda” — which VICE named one of the best songs of the month and Lyrical Lemonade highlighted on their site — and followed that up in November with the TM88 and ATL Jacob-produced “Finish Him.” Now, Dooda has his eyes set on the upcoming release of his debut album. Kalan.FrFr is a unique figure in the L.A. rap scene, carving his own lane with his smoothly melodic flow. The City Girls Fire Up the “Twerkulator,” Young M.A. & Lil Durk Make Their Presence Felt, and the Backyardigans Are Back…Again

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. This was a hip hop-heavy week on the platform, with rap songs from both sides of the pond catching fire. But part of the beauty of music on TikTok is the fact that a catalog hit or novelty song can capture the community’s imagination just as easily as the latest charting hit. Check out what made TikTok tick this week:

Miami rap duo City Girls are masters of body-moving music, so it’s no wonder that they’re a favorite of the TikTok community. They’ve been trending on the app with their new single “Twerkulator,” which they teased on TikTok with the #TwerkulatorChallenge, racking up tens of millions of video views before the single was even released. Last week, City Girl J.T. announced the beginning of #CityGirlSummer with a video that showcased a new TikTok filter inspired by the song, and “Twerkulator” seems to be heating up along with the weather.
The surreal, boundary-pushing sense of humor of Adult Swim resonates with the TikTok community, and TikTok users have used a new trend to show their love for the network. The soundtrack for this trend? Rapper/producer Vano 3000‘s remix of “Time Moves Slowly,” a 2016 song by jazz trio BadBadNotGood with Future Islands frontman Samuel Herring. Vano’s remix pitches up the original, soups up the drums, and sets the kind of cloudy, but propulsive vibe of songs used in Adult Swim’s classic bumper ads. Since Vano posted a video of himself chowing down on fast food while vibing to the song, the sound has racked up over 195k video creations, most of which saw creators using text on screen to voice their favorite bits of wisdom, to cry over spilled popcorn, and to lament the state of their wardrobe. Even Adult Swim itself hopped on the trend via their own TikTok account. Vano has loudly voiced his appreciation for the fans who helped #vano3000 (212 million views) and #adultswim (1.1 billion views) into viral trends and promised more music to come in Summer 2021.
It’s not surprising that TikTok goes crazy over BTS or Olivia Rodrigo, but it’s much harder to explain the community’s affection for The Backyardigans, a music-heavy Nickelodeon children’s series. Just weeks after “Castaways” unexpectedly became TIkTok’s top trending song (over 950k video creations and a #1 spot on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart), the Nick Jr. crew is back with “Into The Thick Of It,” an innocent anthem about charging headfirst into the unknown. With over 45k creations to date, the song is the perfect soundtrack for taking the plunge, whether into a suspicious-looking swimming pool, into a bowl of food before it cools down, or a coop full of defensive chickens.
Fresh off the success of his viral verse on the #1 UK Official Singles Chart hit “Body (Remix)” (1.4M+ combined creations), UK rapper ArrDee is having another viral moment with his new song “Oliver Twist.” Steadily becoming an avid TikTok user, ArrDee began teasing the drill track on his page a couple weeks ago and encouraged his fans in the TikTok community to get involved with the sound in their own way. TikTok creators happily obliged, as the sound has garnered over 124.3K+ creations so far and has soundtracked everything from different fashion looks to days in the lives of video vixens, as well as the times when it’s tempting to take advantage of online stores’ payment plans.
Young M.A. is having a major moment on TikTok with her 808-heavy, braggadocious “Hello Baby,” a collaboration with fellow Brooklyn rapper Fivio Foreign. Racking up over 135K+ creations, the sound has inspired TikTok users to share their tattooing process, their trips to islands, and their unbreakable bond with black clothes regardless of weather. Young M.A. has taken to her own page to display an animated version of herself as she uses the sound. The sound has even made its way to TikTok favorite Coi Leray’s page, as she showed the track some love.
Only The Family and Lil Durk’s “One Mo Chance” (44K+ creations) isn’t an inherently funny song, but it’s providing the inspiration for the newest comedic trend on the app, with the repetition of Lil Durk’s high-pitched, expressive “Give me a chance, give me one more chance” line leading the way. Flipping the heartfelt line into a lighthearted trend, TikTok creators are using the line to personify their belongings that need more attention or to comically plead for another chance at something to the people in their lives. “One More Chance” is proving to be the perfect sound for shoes going unworn in favor of Crocs, failed tests of loyalty, and unpredictable first job mistakes.

Take a look below at some of the most interesting developments from recent days:

BTS just scored their third US #1 hit with “Butter,” and the TikTok division of the BTS ARMY is a big contributor to that success. The world famous pop group’s new single has taken the app by storm since they started the #SmoothLikeButter challenge, which asks the community to show off their smoothest moves, from impeccably choreographed group dances to flawless streamer twirls. The song has racked up over 600k video creations, over 323 million video views on the hashtag, and a new dance craze, and it doesn’t look like it will slow down anytime soon.
Part of the joy of listening to Playboi Carti’s music is mimicking his unique vocals, and a new TikTok trend uses one of his wildest songs to send a clear message. TikTok users have turned to “Punk Monk” (402k video creations) to list some behaviors and attributes they just can’t abide. Don’t like sushi? Thinking of planning a trip without your daughter? Do you say “car-muhl” instead of “car-a-mel”? Carti fans on TikTok say, “don’t! talk! to! me!“
Baton Rouge rapper Hd4president‘s “Touch Down 2 Cause Hell” is TIkTok’s new anthem for hot girl summer, inspiring multiple dance crazes and bringing some Dirty South flavor to the platform. The song started to rise in popularity after its use in a twerk-happy video by @diorfaithk on May 1st (4.9 million views) generating over 370k video creations on a user-generated sound perfect for employees looking forward to the end of their shift or slick students trying to avoid plagiarism or parents showing off their children. Louisiana native @jigglikerob brought the song back to where it started, his “jiggin‘” dance showing TikTok how they get down in the Bayou (or at Rob’s college graduation).
Rapper and internet personality Kayla Nicole‘s song “Bundles” ft. Taylor Girlz is TikTok’s latest bad girl anthem. With booming bass and body positive lyrics, the song is the ideal soundtrack for anyone who’s feeling themself, including a teenager coming out to her mom, an energetic father-son duo, and a seriously stylish spaniel. The song has over 1.3 million video creations on TikTok, and is catching fire off the platform too–it’s currently listed at #8 on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
The Mamas & The Papas‘ “Dedicated To The One I Love” is a sparkling example of the legendary group’s combination of classic pop harmonies and ’60s psychedelia. Now, 54 years after the song’s release, “Dedicated To The One I Love” is back, thanks to a TikTok trend that explores the inner dynamics of friendships. The trend focuses on the song’s bombastic build-up from verse to chorus–as the drums hit, the creator’s face fades out and is replaced by two stick figures representing unlikely or perfectly-matched friendships. The best examples of the trend reveal friendship patterns that inherently make sense, even if people don’t often think of them, or slyly comment on nursery rhyme conventions.
Latin singer Don Omar’s “Bandoleros” is intimately associated with the Fast & Furious films, ever since its use in 2009’s Fast & Furious. As excitement builds for the forthcoming F9 (Vin Diesel…in space!), TIkTok users are taking “Bandoleros” into their own hands, bragging about moments in which they lived life a quarter mile at a time. Creators use “Bandoleros” and the green screen filter to insert themselves into a Fast & Furious cast photo to celebrate when they beat Google Maps’ estimated time, did some very basic work on their car, or got lucky at a red light. “Bandoleros” has over 51k video creations on TikTok, many in the past week.

TikTok is a platform where Black culture thrives, powered by a vibrant and varied cadre of creators and artists. To celebrate the enormous contribution of Black musicians on TikTok and beyond, TikTok is taking the month of June to honor Black music of all genres, educating the community about its rich history, and hopefully inspiring people to make some music of their own. Throughout the month, TikTok will partner with some of your favorite artists and creators, along with a few non-profit organizations, to give Black Music Month the fanfare it deserves.

Celebrate Black Music LIVE

On June 2nd, TikTok teams up with Alicia Keys to commemorate the 20th anniversary of her GRAMMY-winning debut album Songs In A-Minor. During her live, Alicia will tell stories about the creation of the album, duet with TikTok creators that caught her attention, and interact with the community in the LIVE comments. Ms. Keys is a popular figure on TikTok, with over 4.8 million followers. She uses the app to cover BTS on the piano, goof around with Jason Derulo, and show how she takes her tea (with a side of Prince). Her 2004 #1 hit “My Boo” (a duet with Usher) became the basis of the #MyBooChallenge, which has over 392 million video views. For Black Music Month this year Color Of Change, MACRO, TikTok, and the Recording Academy invite artists and creators to join in to commemorate the power of Black culture, art and expression, while also amplifying Color Of Change’s #ChangeMusic and #ChangeHollywood initiatives via TikTok through the celebration of music from Black movie soundtracks.

Creators are invited to use TikTok’s Stitch, Duet, and Green Screen functions to highlight their favorite songs and soundtrack moments from films. The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. The songs featured this week range from brand new smash hits to ’70s classics, each one spurring its own universe of skits, dances, and memes. Check out this week’s trends, which reflect the app’s unique tapestry of sounds and the vibrancy of the creator community:

Olivia Rodrigo was TikTok’s first big breakout artist of 2021, and it’s becoming clearer and clearer that she’s here to stay. Her new single “good 4 u” just debuted at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, her second #1 debut of the year following the success of “driver’s license” (1.8 million video creations). Like with “driver’s license,” the massive opening week of “good 4 u” was propelled by TikTok, whose community can’t get enough Olivia, creating over 750k videos to the song on multiple sounds. Creators use the song to soundtrack impulsive actions, like a new haircut or a feline dance party, while others respond to Olivia’s “like a damn sociopath” lyric, describing anti-social tendencies like lathering fries in ketchup instead of dipping or brushing teeth with hot water instead of cold. Many users, however, just love the song and will take any excuse to jam out.
Canadian rapper-producer Tesher has been making viral hits on TikTok since 2019, building a following with his seamless blend of hip-hop and Desi cultures. He first gained attention in 2019, with his mash up of “Old Town Road” and Bollywood hit “Ramta Jogi” (489k video creations) and struck again in 2020 with his single “Young Shahrukh” (292k video creations), which became the basis of a fashion-forward transition trend. Outdoing himself yet again, Tesher has had his greatest success yet with his danceable single “Jalebi Baby,” racking up over 1.4 million video creations, powered in part by a “this or that” trend that encourages creators (including Jason Derulo) to make impossible choices. Now signed to Capitol Records, Tesher recently took to TikTok to express his gratitude to is fans and prove the app’s life-changing potential.
Few R&B ballads are as purely sweet as Miguel’s 2010 hit “Sure Thing,” a song about staying loyal to the ones you love. A new trending sound on TikTok emphasizes the song’s sweetness, presenting an amateurish, a capella version of “Sure Thing” that makes up for the technical shortcomings with deep emotion. With over 133k video creations since April, “Sure Thing” has become an anthem for dog owners who can’t bear to leave their pets alone, an ideal way to reenact moments of nervous anticipation, or a soundtrack to your embarrassing childhood recollections. Most notably, Lil Nas X used the audio when he showed up 3 hours early for his Jimmy Fallon interview.
Native-American funk rock band Redbone made history in 1974 when they scored a #5 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their feel-good track “Come and Get Your Love,” becoming the first Native-American band to secure a top 5 single on the Hot 100 chart. The song has had many lives since its initial release, including placement in the Guardians Of The Galaxy soundtrack and now, it’s following in the footsteps of fellow GOTG song ELO’s “Mr. Blue Sky” as a TikTok hit. Amassing over 736K creations, “Come and Get Your Love” soundtracks lighthearted moments on TikTok, proving to be the perfect audio for hilariously unpredictable wedding moments, golden retrievers living up to their name, and vibing with the friendliest pigs on the farm.
“Come And Get Your Love” isn’t the only retro radio staple to gain traction on TikTok in the past week–Twisted Sister’s 1984 stadium classic “I Wanna Rock” is picking up steam. It can be a source of dad jokes or a way for a young rock fan to express her love for the genre, but in recent days “I Wanna Rock” is the soundtrack to a bizarre trend involving squeezable cheese and a Ritz cracker, popularized by creator @mattzworld in a video that racked up over 285k views. Though there might be songs that seem more likely to inspire people to “get crazy with the cheez whiz,” “I Wanna Rock” is the gloriously cheesy anthem of choice for a growing contingent of TIkTok pranksters.
Rising producer PlayaPhonk is providing the underground club vibes on TikTok this week with a dark, techno anthem “Phonkytown.” Still seemingly a hidden treasure across most of the Internet, the track is taking off on TikTok, garnering a combined 284.9K+ creations so far. The booming bass and distorted effects in the track are a big hit on the platform, as the beat has inspired creations from the spookily creative side of TikTok. The sound is the perfect mood-setter for your Halloween-themed engagement photoshoots or the latest character cosplay. The intense mood of the track even seems to make some creators think about moments when they want to fight their best friends–all in the name of BFF love of course. The TikTok success of “Phonkytown” has helped the song rise up the Spotify U.S. Viral 50 chart, where it currently sits at #3.

The Background:

Taleban Dooda always had a voice–a combination of distinctly Floridian style and irresistibly catchy melody, has made the 19-year-old rapper one of the most exciting new rap voices coming out of the South. Hailing from East Tampa, Dooda had few options to avoid the violence that lurked outside his door. When he injured his knee in his 9th grade year, ending his football dreams, Dooda turned his attention to music. TikTok and SiriusXM to Create Exclusive Audio Experiences including SiriusXM Music Channel and Pandora Playlists

New SiriusXM channel — TikTok Radio, a groundbreaking full-time SiriusXM music channel — will be part of TikTok collaboration across SiriusXM and Pandora

Beginning today, Pandora is launching a series of playlists hosted by top TikTok creators including Bella Poarch, Christian Shelton and Nick Tangorra

The Announcement:

TikTok, SiriusXM and Pandora today announced they are joining forces on the rollout of new and innovative content across each of their platforms. Creating listener experiences curated specifically for each platform’s loyal fans will allow TikTok, SiriusXM, and Pandora to deliver access to groundbreaking programming, exclusive performances, special events, and some of music’s top and emerging talent.

This summer, SiriusXM will launch TikTok Radio, a full-time music channel featuring the trending sounds that are redefining pop culture from TikTok. TikTok Radio will be presented by TikTok creators, tastemakers, and DJs. TikTok Radio will be available in vehicles and as a streaming channel on the SiriusXM App, desktop, and all connected devices.

Sonically synched to the TikTok experience, the channel will feel like a radio version of the platform’s “For You” page. The TikTok Radio channel will feature a diverse group of TikTok creators showcasing trending music and stories behind the songs throughout each day, as well as a weekly music countdown dedicated to TikTok’s top trending tracks. Listeners can expect to hear directly from music’s next generation of rising stars and whatever else the TikTok community is vibing to.

Also, beginning today, Pandora is launching a series of exclusive hosted playlists featuring popular TikTok creators who will take listeners through their favorite songs with special commentary about their selections. The creators will be curating, hosting, and promoting the playlists to their fans on TikTok. The TikTok Tastemakers series will kick off with Bella Poarch, and other creators including Christian Shelton and Nick Tangorra following in the coming months. Pandora listeners can also tune into the TikTok Hits Playlist featuring all of the latest and greatest songs featured and trending on TikTok.

TikTok fans will also have access to select re-airings of Pandora’s original events series, Pandora LIVE. Recently, Pandora LIVE Powered by Women featuring Gwen Stefani and Jazmine Sullivan re-aired on TikTok. Additional upcoming events will be announced throughout the year.
