Grammy-winning rapper Lil Baby has been one of the world’s most impactful artists since his first release in 2017. Stacking meaningful metaphors and incisive comments on the way we live today, Lupe Fiasco seeks fresh perspectives on the state of the culture with his probing pen. Exploring the pain that dwells behind a celebratory holiday, Lupe shares “Galveston,” a powerful new song. Commissioned by Apple Music as part of its celebration of Juneteenth 2022, “Galveston” takes its name from the holiday’s East Texas origins–though Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the emancipation didn’t fully take effect in Texas until the Union Army reached Galveston on June 19th, 1865. The new song pays tribute to Texas and its role in Juneteenth, lyrically, with social commentary, and sonically, with occasional drops into the chopped-n-screwed delivery common in Houston hip-hop.

Rhyming over a haunting mixture of ethereal vocals and eerily distorted keyboards, courtesy of PRODUCER, the Chicago native emphasizes the importance of rejoicing in progress, while ensuring that no one forgets the threat of white supremacy that has persisted even as slavery has not: “But you can’t rest so peaceful/Indentured servancy is gone be shiny and deceitful, protect yo people/And that finesse there is so lethal/Jim Crow bust like desert eagles/Gone come back round like extra sequels/And it’s all gone be legal,” he warns. Despite the ever-present threat, Lupe ends on a note of catharsis, framing Juneteenth celebrations as a way for the Black community to thumb their nose at their oppressors and flaunt their hard-fought freedom: “GALVESTON, birthplace, Ghost Town/Day of the dead, prayers are said/In the form of a hoedown/Fish fry till they golden brown/Triple K’s Brown Gold vs White Sheets/Poltergeist get exorcised on the 19th.” “Galveston” is exclusively available to stream on Apple Music.

Apple Music launched ‘Juneteenth 2022: Freedom Songs’, a specially-curated collection of music to celebrate and honor Juneteenth. Available to stream exclusively on Apple Music, the second annual compilation features an eclectic mix of originals and covers to celebrate the holiday. TikTok is proud to be home to a vibrant community of Black musicians, and to celebrate Black artists, TikTok strives to educate the community on the seismic impact they’ve had on all of the music genres we love. The Black community has played an integral role in the creation and development of genres such as Jazz, Gospel, R&B, Rock, Hip-Hop, Electronic and Dance music, and more. During #BlackMusicMonth, TikTok will explore the origins, triumphs, and complexities of genres popular in the app today, and shine a light on the artists and creators who entertain and inspire the TikTok community, and continue to shift the culture with innovations of their own.

Pride x Black Music Month

Black Music Month and Pride Month coincide in June, and to celebrate the creativity of Black LGBTQ+ artists on TikTok, we’re spotlighting 6 Black LGBTQ+ creators who continue to inspire us with their music and truly embody the spirit of Pride Together:

@catburnss – London singer-songwriter Cat Burns is best known for her candid and healing pop songs that address anxiety, queer acceptance, and relationships, including her anthem “go” (300k+ video creations).

@dreyamac – The British emcee is best known on TikTok for her banger “Own Brand (Baddie)” (5.9 million creations), which she not only wrote and performed, but also choreographed the viral dance that rippled through the platform.

@iemtedy – Tedy has remained steadfast in living his most authentic life even in the most difficult times. After creating a name for himself on social media with more than 1 million followers, he started making music. From that, he signed with Sony Music Canada and the rest of the story continues being written.

@lakeyah – Signed to Quality Control and bearing the standard for Milwaukee’s rap scene, Lakeyah wins fans on TikTok with her fiery singles like “Female Goat” ft. City Girls and her love of a good meme.

Background:

A native of South Memphis, Kenny Muney grew up idolizing rappers like Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, and Boosie. He started rapping at age 15, developing his aggressive aesthetic and honing his deeply rhythmic flow. In his rise to become the next rapper to blow up out of Detroit, Kura projects a self-assured composure rather than any sense of urgency, as if to avoid hastening the inevitable. Coming through cool as a cucumber, the SossHouse artist shares his new video single “Waves.” Anchored by the infectious digitized organ melodies of an unmistakable Pi’erre Bourne instrumental that pairs perfectly with Kura’s unfazed flows, the young artist revels in the contentment of his own lane on the track:“Bad b**** match my fly, she stunting/You want a verse but you trash, I’m dubbing.”

The video for “Waves” finds the shaggy-headed rapper at the park, surrounded by homies against the dreary backdrop of gray snow and barren trees that signify late winter in Detroit. At 14, Kura began producing, rapping, songwriting, and engineering himself from his bedroom in Michigan. Inspired by the music of the Sex Pistols, Aphex Twin, and Pi’erre Bourne, he quickly gained recognition for his confident vocals, versatile flows, and dizzying melodies. A collaboration with singer D. Bringing immaculate vibes and fiery Latin Music to the shores of Lake Michigan, Sueños Music Festival is the stuff that dreams are made of. Taking place in picturesque Grant Park, Chicago, Sueños kicked off its inaugural festival on a high note, with a full complement of contemporary Latin sounds that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the current scene.

Ozuna closed out the night with his brand of melodic Reggaeton during his first Chicago performance in four years, Farruko tore up the stage with electronic-influenced hits like “PEPAS,” and Myke Towers showed out with his rich tenor and R&B-inspired melodies. Beyond Reggaeton, the sounds of Sueños drew from ascendant genres like Dembow from Dominican don El Alfa and rising star Tokischa, and played host to one of the biggest U.S. sets by regional Mexican superstar Natanael Cano.

Dedicated to the ideals of peace, love, and perreo, the fans at the festival brought just as much energy as the performers, reveling in the communal enjoyment of their favorite music. Sueños was created to be an inclusive event with a mission to celebrate and uplift Latin culture and the extraordinary music, people, food, and amazing energy that comes along with it. Fans at the festival enjoyed a curated selection of local food vendors, a one-of-a-kind mural installation by Chicago-based artist Kozmo, more festive art installations to add to the vibe, and a full complement of merch inspired by the festival and its host city.

Jelly and Pi’erre Bourne have a well-worn rapper/producer chemistry as long time friends. Connecting for a full-length project that shows off the sound they developed–one that takes equal inspiration from Memphis horrorcore and Carolina party music–Jelly and Pi’erre share The Wolf of Peachtree 2, available now via SossHouse.

Entirely produced and engineered by Pi’erre Bourne, who also contributes vocals to the project highlight “WYA,” The Wolf of Peachtree 2 perfectly encapsulates the fierce duality of Jelly’s style. Over Pi’erre’s genre-bending instrumentals and jaw-dropping transitions, Jelly delivers his most combative cadences yet, offering disrespectful shots at his opps with a smile on his face.

“We know each other’s sounds,” says Jelly, about his friend and label head Pi’erre Bourne. “We know what each other likes and we know what each other don’t like.”

The duo’s chemistry is apparent on unrelenting cuts like “Twin” and “Mumble Jumble,” where Jelly’s lockstep delivery cuts through the chaotic, yet calming carnival that is Pi’erre’s signature. Still, throughout the tape, Jelly proves that even though he has refined tastes, he’s not one to cross: “Woke up 10 o’clock, I’m feeling kinda pissed/The numbers just played, smoked a blunt, I dropped the fifth,” he spits on project highlight “Pop It.”

Along with the project, Jelly shares “Motion,” a brand new music video. The tape’s opening track, “Motion” finds Jelly applying his drawly staccato to Pi’erre’s liquid, jazz-inspired keys, which add an air of refinement to Jelly’s street-level boasts: “On the money train, I can see it, then it’s open/Goin’ back and forth, I got motion like the ocean,” he spits. Directed by Samuel Finley, the video finds Jelly on his home turf, as he takes over Peachtree Central Station in Atlanta. With help from the wavy camera work and his sparkling smile, Jelly crafts a clip that makes riding the MARTA seem like the flyest activity imaginable

The followup to 2020’s The Wolf of Peachtree is home to Jelly’s recent Juicy J-assisted single, “Bubble Gum,” a chirpy celebration of curvature coated in the influence of Three 6 Mafia, both in sound and subject matter. “Bubble Gum” sees the South Carolina native channel the immutable flows of Memphis’ underground with stunning efficacy, a motif of influence which Jelly carries throughout the project, augmented by Juicy J’s contributions to The Wolf of Peachtree 2 as an engineer.

Ready to step out on his own, and hell bent on making sure listeners are ready too, Merlyn shares “GREEN LIGHT,” his new video. Armed with a stank face-inducing beat from CONNIE, an artist and frequent collaborator of Merlyn’s who produced JELEEL!’s hit “DIVE IN,” the Houston rapper launches himself head first into his verse, coming down on each syllable like a ton of bricks as he annihilates his opposition: “I woke up feeling like a Gucci ad-lib/I am a real n**** that is not in Paris/You a fatherless b*tch and that is apparent/You ain’t got no style, b*tch you a parrot.” The forceful hook proves that the emcee is champing at the bit to show the world what he’s capable of: “Green light!/Green light!/Motherf*cking go time, green light!”

Directed by Miggy, the new video for “GREEN LIGHT” gets its power from Merlyn’s wide-eyed charisma, taking inspiration from video games and Merlyn’s freewheeling lifestyle. The 26-year-old artist fires up his Nintendo 64, which magically works without a cartridge and allows him to instantly customize everything in his life–from his outfit, to his whip, to his girl. Rocking ski goggles in the Cali sunshine with a mischievous smile on his face, Merlyn is enjoying life as master of his own domain.

A member of BROCKHAMPTON from 2012 until its final performance at this year’s Coachella, Merlyn Wood made his mark as the most outgoing and eccentric member of the groundbreaking band. Born in Ghana and raised in Houston, the artist credits both places as major influences on his vibrant and lively vocal style. Though he occasionally released music outside of the framework of BROCKHAMPTON, Merlyn spent the early part of 2022 laying the groundwork for his foray into solo stardom, sharing his CONNIE-produced single “S.Y.K.” in February to praise from NPR, HYPEBEAST, and more. Exploring the recesses of his one-track mind with his witty bars and floating flows, YN Jay never stops working. Hot off announcing his upcoming project, Young Wild & Free, the “Coochie Man” returns to share the video for his latest single, “Shake That A$$ Baby.” The amusingly absurd clip finds the “Coochie Man” in fine form, delivering his raunchy rhymes in his laid back flow. Over a beat by his favorite collaborator ENRGY, the Michigan rap star reveals that he’s a man with an extensive set of skills: “I can GPS you to this one spot like a navigator/I’ll whoop your a** in the ring like I’m Gladiator/I’ve been counting numbers all year, I’m a calculator/All I need is 7 shots of Henny, I’m an activator.”

The clip for “Shake That A$$ Baby” sees Jay channel his inner Bubba Sparxx for an infomercial-style video inspired by the 2006 hit, “Ms. New Booty.” Jay delivers a passionate pitch for his visionary “Build-A-Freak” mobile app, but the spiel is quickly overwhelmed by Jay’s seemingly involuntary grunts, groans, and out-of-pocket outbursts.” The SNIPES-directed video creates a fever-dreamlike scene of surreal absurdity and a raunchiness that makes Billy Mays sound like Mr. Rogers.

YN Jay kicked off 2022 with his Mozzy and Louie Ray-assisted banger, “Tip Off,” following a prolific 2021, in which the Alamo Records signee released multiple projects, spark ed several viral trends, and dropped a metric ton of music videos. Furthermore, the Michigan rapper solidified himself as a somewhat mythical figure on TikTok, generating millions of video creations on viral hits like “Triple S,” “Coochie Land,” and “Kakashi,” while his inimitable raps quickly earned co-signs from the likes of Drake and Lil Uzi Vert. The Background:

“It’s scary how easy it is for me to make music,” admits 21-year-old rapper YN Jay. This is true of his 2020 hit “Coochie” and the follow-up album Coochie Land. “It was made in three minutes, easily, and the video did 30 million views. I’ve been writing songs to go a certain way my whole life, but it never worked. Now, I’m not overthinking it, and it’s making me a star.” After over a decade at the mic, the Beecher, Michigan native has given rap fans an alternative to music about violence and drugs.

Amid his rise, Jay got cosigns from Drake and Lil Uzi Vert. While Drizzy and Jay are exploring music, he recorded extensively with Uzi. The same night the two discussed collaborating, Jay stopped everything to drive to Philly. “I pulled up; we did damn near eight songs.” One track, the “coochie”-inspired “HOLD ONNNNN,” promises to release during an exciting 2021. Fresh off of Ninja Warrior—an album featuring Lil Yachty and Sada Baby that he conceptualized and recorded in a single day, YN Jay recently signed a deal with Alamo Records and is focused on showcasing his versatility and staying power. “I’m working on a few albums and letting the world know how big this is. Anybody can be a rapper; I’m trying to catch the culture and update the game.”

SUEÑOS MUSIC FESTIVAL REVEALS SET TIMES AND STYLISH MERCH FOR INAUGURAL EVENT

FEATURING J BALVIN, OZUNA, WISIN & YANDEL, FARRUKO, AND MANY MORE, THE 2-DAY FESTIVAL ARRIVES IN GRANT PARK, CHICAGO THIS WEEKEND (5/28-29)

The Announcement:

(Chicago, IL – May 26, 2022) Sueños Music Festival, the largest Latin Music & Reggaeton event to ever take place in the heart of downtown Chicago, unveils new merch that will be available for purchase at this weekend’s event. In addition, Sueños has revealed the set times, site map, and performance schedule, allowing fans to plan their action-packed weekend accordingly. Headlined by J Balvin, Ozuna, Farruko, and Wisin & Yandel, with performances from Myke Towers, El Alfa, Jhayco, Sech, Fuerza Regida and many more, the inaugural Sueños Festival happens on May 28th & 29th in Grant Park, Chicago.

The Sueños team devised a wide selection of bespoke merch to commemorate the inaugural festival and honor Chicago’s Latin culture. Fans can choose between three hoodie designs, a tie-dye short sleeved tee, a white long-sleeved tee, baseball caps in four colors, a bucket hat, and snazzy socks. Finally, Sueños designed a baseball jersey, celebrating Chicago’s historic status as a mecca for America’s pastime.

Produced by the teams behind Baja Beach Fest, Chicago’s own Reventon Promotions and Lollapalooza. Sueños Festival (translation: dreams), was created to be an inclusive event with a mission to continue to celebrate and uplift Latin culture and the extraordinary music, people, food, and amazing energy that comes along with it. In addition to an entirely Latin lineup, the festival will feature a curated selection of Chicago’s best Latin food, art installations, a ferris wheel, multiple bars, and specialty cocktail lounges, and much more.
