Rhyming over creeping instrumentals with a sinister wisdom, Icewear Vezzo created the blueprint for success in the Detroit rap scene. Preparing a new effort that explores Vezzo’s rise from the streets to C-suites, Vezzo announces Rich Off Pints 3, his next mixtape. The conclusion to his signature mixtape series, which has generated over 150 million streams across its two previous volumes, Rich Off Pints 3 focuses on Vezzo’s efforts to put the streets behind him once and for all, and to turn quick profits into lasting wealth.

Adorned with the low note piano instrumentals that pair so well with Vezzo’s slick talk, Rich Off Pints 3 is the product of a man who has been through hell in the pursuit of better days, with songs that reflect the reality of Detroit street life and others that prove that Vezzo understands that money alone does not make a person rich. Home to recent singles, like the diabolical “Richer Than My Opps,” and the sneering “Sicc Of Y’all,“ which has over 1.5 million YouTube views since its early May release, Rich Off Pints 3 arrives June 29th via Vezzo’s own Iced Up Records.

“Richness isn’t just a financial measurement, it’s a mindset,” says Vezzo. “You can have a lot of money and still be poor, mentally. You can be rich in loyalty in relationships, in your outlook in life. You got guys who are rich who are assholes, who don’t think about the energy they put out in the world. There’s people who got money who think they can treat people however just because they have money. To me, they’re poor. If that money goes away, they don’t have nothing. Along with the announcement of the tape, Vezzo drops “The Commission,” a new banger for summertime in Detroit. The new song features guest spots from Payroll Giovanni and Peezy, who along with Vezzo, helped lay the groundwork for the modern Detroit rap scene: Peezy, along with rappers like Babyface Ray and DameDot, was a member of the crucial collective Team Eastside, while Payroll ran with the seminal rap group Doughboyz Cashout prior to his Big Bossin’ days. In “The Commission,” the three 313 architects make a formidable three man weave, as they trade rich life bars atop Flint-area producer Wayne616‘s Michigan-style distorted bass. In the video, directed by Kardiak, the D-Town trio host a banquet in the parking lot, reveling in the company of their homies and a trio of foreign luxury autos.

Consistently racking up more than 4 million streams on his catalog per week, Vezzo’s ambitions reach far beyond music, and even beyond the physical realm. Respected from The A to The Bay and everywhere in between, Icewear Vezzo helped build the Detroit rap scene into the flourishing behemoth it is today.  Since releasing his first mixtape The Clarity in 2013, Vezzo built a large and loyal fanbase in The Mitten and beyond, feeding the streets and his 131k YouTube subscribers with high-quality releases and representing for Detroit on tracks by Big Sean, G Herbo, Drakeo The Ruler, DJ Mustard, Zaytoven, and many others. The 31-year-old artist frequently collaborates with other major figures in the Detroit scene, including Peezy and Babyface Ray, who he featured on his street hit –in just the past two years, Vezzo made waves with songs like “Meg Thee Stallion” ft. Coming straight out of drill’s birthplace, Chicago’s DCG BROTHERS are more than a refreshing injection of amusement into the scene that started it all: they’re one of music’s most exciting duos on the rise. Comprised of brothers DCG Bsavv and DCG Shun, the DCG Brothers share “Buss It,” the latest No More Heroes-directed video from their recent debut project Jungle Life.

“Buss It” finds Bsavv and Shun backed by a stellar instrumental from platinum producers Southside and Slowburnz, in which haunting piano high notes echo as if played in an empty cathedral, while volleys of booming bass keep it grounded in the streets. AFROPUNK announces a renewed partnership with Target, bringing Target’s Black Beyond Measure campaign and broader commitment to Black joy to Planet AFROPUNK Live: Minneapolis on Juneteenth weekend. AFROPUNK seeks to promote Black-owned businesses, empower entrepreneurs, and help all community members understand their own worth. AFROPUNK and Target will partner in furtherance of that goal through Black Beyond Measure by forging deeper, more meaningful connections with Black guests in more moments that matter.

Target will collaborate with AFROPUNK on a one of a kind, unique, creative and spectacular weekend of celebration through live art tributes, food celebrations and music in Minneapolis. On Saturday, June 18th, Target and AFROPUNK connect with The Get Down Coffee Co. to curate a day of conversations, workshops and programs about issues central to the local community. The East Memphis Artist Stays So Icy He Might Catch a Shiver in New Video from Recent Project

With a charismatic personality as “gigantic” as the pockets he pads with racks, Big Moochie Grape has been serving up raw, uncut bars rooted in Memphis tradition, but irreplicable in execution. Today, the Paper Route Empire artist returns to share the video for his laid-back banger, “East Haiti Baby.” The intro and title track from his recent East Haiti Baby project, anchored by the same Bill Withers sample that powered Blackstreet’s “No Diggity,” finds Moochie delivering soulful flows over a softened beat that lets his Southern drawl glide over every bar with ease, nodding to his mentor Young Dolph with lines like, “Know that I’m wet cause I’m signed to a dolphin.”

The video is a reflection of the ups-and-downs from Moochie’s life on the streets to the stage, as the larger-than-life stepper stands on his own through it all. Rocking layers of icy chains, including one of the “East Haiti Baby” pieces featured on the project’s cover, which sits right below his PRE pendant, Moochie walks himself from the director’s chair to center stage of the shoot. The video starts with Wale and his crew in a deserted impound lot, surrounded by nothing but wasteland and abandoned vehicles, on which he takes out his frustrations. Born and raised in Nigeria, Wale became the first member of his family to come to America when he left for Western Kentucky University. Wale’s life changed forever when he turned 19 and his mom fell ill, causing financial circumstances that forced Wale to drop out of college. During this time of crisis, music was Wale’s avenue of comfort and creative expression. He moved to Atlanta to pursue his dream and released his first song in 2019, “Family Ties,” which candidly discussed growing up without a father and other family issues. The Proud Chicago Native Weaves a Complex Picture of Modern Life in the Titular Missive From His Upcoming Album, Out June 24th via 1st & 15th/Thirty Tigers

Lupe Fiasco‘s verses using metaphor and tongue-twisting rhymes to paint a lyrical picture that’s simultaneously vivid as a Goya and as abstract as a Picasso. Observing our modern culture’s warped priorities from a birds-eye view, Lupe shares “DRILL MUSIC IN ZION,” a jazz-inflected new single.

Produced by Lupe’s longtime collaborator Soundtrakk, “DRILL MUSIC IN ZION” bears little resemblance to the genre in its title, blending crisp, East Coast-style drums with dreamy bebop horns and atmospheric piano. Creeping through the beat’s negative spaces, Lupe Fiasco examines the way greed transforms each interaction into a transaction, and how the profit motive corrodes our collective humanity: “Position jostlers monitor hegemonics/Robots make the robots that solder electronics/Nostradamus couldn’t bother to keep a promise/Logic’s on a rocket, where profit defeats the conscience.” Lupe ties together his anecdotes with his gently-crooned hook, which slyly comments on how art created amidst strife–such as the drill music that originated in Lupe’s hometown of Chicago–becomes entertainment for the comfortable masses.

“DRILL MUSIC IN ZION” is the latest glimpse of Lupe’s next album, also titled DRILL MUSIC IN ZION. The product of a burst of thoughtful spontaneity, Lupe created the new album over a short period, diving into a folder of beats sent by Soundtrakk and emerging with a fully-realized album in just three days. The album is home to  “AUTOBOTO” ft. Nayirah, the mischievous, playful, and deceptively dense single that earned praise from Financial Times, Complex, and more. DRILL MUSIC IN ZION arrives on June 24th via 1st & 15th/Thirty Tigers.

His first new album since 2018’s Drogas Wave, DRILL MUSIC IN ZION marks the start of another chapter in Lupe’s illustrious career. The proud Chicago native has already had a busy 2022, marked with sold out shows, new music, and much more. Last week, Lupe shared “Galveston,” an Apple Music-exclusive track that explores the origins of Juneteenth. Lupe recently closed out his “Food & Liquor Tour,” a series of performances in which he plays his debut album in full. He paid tribute to his hometown in the reflective, self-produced “100 Chicagos,” and dug into the archives to share “Hustlaz,” a previously-unreleased song originally recorded before the release of the now-classic debut album Food & Liquor. Beyond music, Lupe continues to focus on the community organizations he founded, including We Are M.U.R.A.L, The Neighborhood Start-Up Fund, Society of Spoken Art, and his cross-cultural content venture, Studio SV.

Lupe recently launched his “LFT” program, a new NFT program that allows fans to get closer than ever to Lupe. Unlike many NFTs, which solely exist in the digital space, the “LFT” program offers token-holders an array of online and offline benefits. The benefits start with a generative art profile pic–each LFT holder gets a unique digital artwork inspired by Lupe’s album Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, which celebrates its 15th birthday this year.

TikTok Treats, Week of June 13th

Tate McRae Becomes the First Artist to Debut and Host a Full Video on TikTok, ABBA Inspires Nostalgia for a Lost World, and Radiohead Helps Creators Explore Life’s Twists and Turns

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. This week, TikTok continues to embrace hits of old, with trends from legendary groups like ABBA and Radiohead, while keeping an eye towards the future. Rising hits from Tate McRae and PLAYAMANE are making waves, with no sign of abating. Check out what music stories made TikTok tick this week:

• • Since her platinum selling, chart topping, viral hit “you broke me first” (292k video creations) made waves on the platform, Tate McRae has utilized TikTok to share previews of her music and create trends for her fans. Last week, Tate created a new kind of trend, releasing the music video for fan and critical favorite “don’t come back” on TikTok. Available to view on Tate’s TikTok profile until it sees wider release on July 9th, “don’t come back” is the first-ever music video to debut on TikTok and be hosted as an exclusive on the platform. With over 512k views to date, “don’t come back” looks poised to follow songs like “that way” (103k video creations) and “stupid” (244k video creations) as Tate’s next trending hit, and the moves she shows off in the video already have some fans asking for a tutorial on the choreography.
  • Their music might be melancholy, but Radiohead maintains a mischievous presence on TikTok. The British band regularly broadcasts sarcastic missives from Chieftain Mews, a distorted-voiced figure from the band’s past, who delivers meta news announcements and mystifies those who encounter him on their For You feed. In April, an enterprising TikTok creator found a doorbell whose notes sound remarkably similar to Radiohead’s “No Surprises,” creating a sound where the doorbell speeds up and seamlessly morphs into the 1998 classic. The original video, by @esqifrenchfries, racked up over 10 million views, and the sound inspired a trend about life’s unexpected twists and turns–the twist arrives just as the doorbell sound switches to the OK Computer cut. TikTok users relayed stories of love at first sight, vulnerably admitted deep insecurities, and revealed the stories behind artistic obsessions. Over 150k video creations later, it caught the attention of Radiohead and Chieftain Mews, who posted about his dashed dreams of TikTok stardom.
  • TikTok doesn’t just provide exposure to songs–the platform is home to a community creators who are passionate about educating the masses about the theory and creative processes behind our favorite music. Earlier this month, creator @danielswall showed major love to OneRepublic singer-songwriter Ryan Tedder as he raved about some of the many Billboard hits that Ryan co-wrote. He highlighted Beyonce’s “Halo,” Leona Lewis’ “Bleeding Love,” and Lil Nas X’s “That’s What I Want” just to name a few. Along with highlighting his work, he emphasized that Ryan is an underrated artist and songwriter and encouraged his followers to follow and support Ryan on TikTok. When Ryan gained over 60K followers (much to his surprise), he found and duetted Daniel’s video creation to show his gratitude for the love he showed him. His account has now reached over 455K followers, over 450K more than he had before Daniel shouted him out.
  • Irene Cara’s classic 80s pop track “Fame” provides the soundtrack for a relatable trend for TikTok users in recent weeks. The lyric “I’m gonna live forever” inspired creators to joke about how if they got 5 minutes added to their life every time a certain scenario occurred, they would live forever. With over 234K+ creations, the sound is inspiring creators to share how they often overthink basic human interactions, go through failed talking stages with romantic partners, and get told they look just like Taylor Swift. Even JoJo Siwa joined in on the trend, making it known that she’s obsessed with the viral dance to Lizzo’s pop bop “About Damn Time.”
  • Since joining TikTok last year, ABBA has been one of the most engaging legacy acts on the platform. Followers will often find band members taking nostalgic trips or discussing the musical secrets behind their well known songs. It was only a matter of time before ABBA sparked a TikTok trend, and in recent weeks, they’ve found one that uses their 1979 hit “Angeleyes” (363K+ platform and user-generated creations). Using a slowed version of the euphoric pop banger, TikTok creators share some of their favorite things from the past, and lament that  they may have become obsolete. Using ABBA’s emphatic lines, “Keep thinking about his angeleyes/ I keep thinking/ Sometimes when I’m lonely I sit and think about him And it hurts to remember all the good times,” creators share montages of their favorite late comedians, TV show characters, and throwback children’s shows. In other videos, “Angeleyes” soundtracks creators’ hairstyle recommendations and daily vlogs. ABBA also interacted with the track on their TikTok page, as guitarist Björn Ulvadeus shared throwback photos of his favorite shoes from his career.
  • TikTok is home to a bustling community of editors who recut clips of their favorite shows to the tune of their favorite songs, and several trending songs started life as go-tos for editors. PLAYAMANE & Nateki’s “Midnight” is the latest song to soundtrack a series of fan edits that showcase characters from visual media properties. Reaching 23.9K+ creations, the distorted electronic song finds creators sharing edits of characters from anime shows such as Hellsing Ultimate and Dragonball Z, and hit series and movies like AMC’s Breaking Bad and American Psycho. In other creations, “Midnight” soundtracks TikTok users’ creative montages that emphasize their love for their favorite K-Pop artists.

Paper Route Empire’s Longest-Tenured Signee Embarks on an Odyssey Through Atlanta in New Video

With his focused triplet flows and candid coolness, Jay Fizzle never fails to put on for Paper Route Empire. Today, Jay returns to close out an all-day studio session with his new video single, “Last Song.” The Bandplay-produced track finds the Memphis rapper grounded firmly in the pocket as he delivers a volley of bars with clever lines like, “I’m too cool for school, I don’t follow rules/I don’t know construction, but keep me a tool.” “Last Song” is the latest release in the run up to Jay Fizzle’s upcoming project, DonnaFizzle, coming soon via Paper Route Empire.

The video for “Last Song” finds Jay pulling up outside Street Execs Studios in Atlanta, where the artist had worked on music all day before closing out the session with this track. Donning a purple fit to match his signature Donatello chain, Jay cruises through the city, as shots of State Farm Arena, Mercedes-Benz Stadium, and even Jay’s set during Key Glock’s “The Yellow Tape Tour” are interspersed throughout the clip.

“Last Song” follows in the wake of “Zaba Freestyle,” a purple-tinted Memphis banger, “4 HOS,” a showcase for Fizzle’s drawly, double-dipping delivery, and “LLD,” a heartfelt tribute to his mentor Young Dolph. Adorned with lush harmonies and a star vocal turn from Ricco Barrino, “Long Live Dolph” finds Jay Fizzle baring his soul, the South Memphis native audibly emotional when he relays his gratitude to his mentor for teaching him everything he knows: “The way I talk, the way I walk, the way I act, the way I dress/The way I do my thing up in the booth, I learned it from the best.” With over 1.6 million views on YouTube, “LLD” is the opening track from Paper Route Empire Presents: Long Live Dolph, a compilation album from the independent label, which features appearances from nearly every artist on PRE, including Key Glock, Big Moochie Grape, Kenny Muney and more.

Keep an eye on the young and hungry PRE roster, as nearly every one of them plans to drop plenty of music this year. The Grammy Winning Rapper Explores the Origins of Juneteenth in a New Song, Exclusively Available on Apple Music, as He Prepares For His Next Album DRILL MUSIC IN ZION, Coming June 24th

The Song:

Stacking meaningful metaphors and incisive comments on the way we live today, Lupe Fiasco seeks fresh perspectives on the state of the culture with his probing pen. Exploring the pain that dwells behind a celebratory holiday, Lupe shares “Galveston,” a powerful new song. Commissioned by Apple Music as part of its celebration of Juneteenth 2022, “Galveston” takes its name from the holiday’s East Texas origins–though Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, the emancipation didn’t fully take effect in Texas until the Union Army reached Galveston on June 19th, 1865. The new song pays tribute to Texas and its role in Juneteenth, lyrically, with social commentary, and sonically, with occasional drops into the chopped-n-screwed delivery common in Houston hip-hop.

Rhyming over a haunting mixture of ethereal vocals and eerily distorted keyboards, courtesy of PRODUCER, the Chicago native emphasizes the importance of rejoicing in progress, while ensuring that no one forgets the threat of white supremacy that has persisted even as slavery has not: “But you can’t rest so peaceful/Indentured servancy is gone be shiny and deceitful, protect yo people/And that finesse there is so lethal/Jim Crow bust like desert eagles/Gone come back round like extra sequels/And it’s all gone be legal,” he warns. Despite the ever-present threat, Lupe ends on a note of catharsis, framing Juneteenth celebrations as a way for the Black community to thumb their nose at their oppressors and flaunt their hard-fought freedom: “GALVESTON, birthplace, Ghost Town/Day of the dead, prayers are said/In the form of a hoedown/Fish fry till they golden brown/Triple K’s Brown Gold vs White Sheets/Poltergeist get exorcised on the 19th.”  “Galveston” is exclusively available to stream on Apple Music.

Apple Music launched ‘Juneteenth 2022: Freedom Songs’, a specially-curated collection of music to celebrate and honor Juneteenth. Available to stream exclusively on Apple Music, the second annual compilation features an eclectic mix of originals and covers to celebrate the holiday. Specializing in fast-talking head-nodders with a Memphis drawl, Kenny Muney knows how to rock a crowd. Sharing scenes from his recent nationwide tour, Kenny proves that he gets money from coast to coast with “Cross Country,” his new video single. Produced by Bandplay, who matches thumping percussion with Southern-fried horns and ethereal vocals, “Cross Country” is Kenny’s trap travelogue, a lyrical exercise that chronicles the Paper Route Empire rapper’s facility with interstate commerce: “I was out in Cali makin’ Green/They was callin’ me Draymond/I have a ho that I hit in Texas/They call me, the Texas chainsaw/Cut em up and I hop in my race car.”

Background:

A native of South Memphis, Kenny Muney grew up idolizing rappers like Lil Wayne, Gucci Mane, and Boosie. He started rapping at age 15, developing his aggressive aesthetic and honing his deeply rhythmic flow. My Favorite Color is a rapper’s rapper, dropping bars that inspire rap hands and stank faces from all who hear. Floating above triumphant horns during his latest lyrical exercise, My Favorite Color shares “Dead It,” a new video single. Produced by DV, “Dead It” finds the rapper born Anthony Willis ready to start fights with anyone who stands in his way of his goals: “N****s tryna take my notes, b*tch I might break ya nose.” The high-energy track provides plenty of opportunity for MFC to flex his peerless facility with pop culture references: “Pullin’ strings like I’m Thundercat/How I look in my Durag?”

In the video, My Favorite Color wakes up and chooses violence, hopping out of bed and rhyming into a dangling microphone, in his own warped version of Colors. The backgrounds cycle between a warm Dodger blue and a bright yellow, possibly representing his twin hometowns of Pittsburgh and Los Angeles. “Dead It” arrives hot on the heels of “Frustrated,” the rapper’s first new release of 2022, which came with a hard-hitting, Jack Rotter-directed music video.

Following the release of his deeply personal debut album Velma in 2020, My Favorite Color used 2021 to show off his technical rhyming chops, keen sense of visuals, and absurdist sense of humor. In “Old News,” a bouncily colorful single praised by Billboard (a “flash of brilliance”) and Lyrical Lemonade, MFC worked a fast-moving flow, delivering punchlines at a rapidfire rate. The song was accompanied by a virtuosic music video, in which the artist portrayed multiple characters a la Eddie Murphy, ranging from a kidnap victim, to a possibly untrained pilot, to a truth-telling stand-up comedian. The artist followed “Old News” with “Mayday,” a jazzy and off-kilter banger, a lyrical showcase that veers to every corner of the rapper’s mind, mixing party-positive flexes with tongue-twisting geopolitical analysis. “Mayday” and “Old News” displayed the prodigious artistic gifts that inspired Pigeons & Planes to name him a Best New Artist in September 2021.
