Rio Da Yung OG put Flint on the map as a vital rap city, with its own unique flow and reputation for the game’s wildest punchlines. Now, with his legal troubles behind him and the city at his back, Rio plans to pay tribute to his home city with F.L.I.N.T. (Feeling Like I’m Not Thru), his next album.

He recently dropped two videos from the upcoming album including “Great Day,” (currently trending on YouTube at #28) which takes place at  Flint Harmony Fest IV, this year’s edition of an annual neighborhood gathering that celebrates unity, peace, and resilience. During the fest, Rio received a proclamation from the City of Flint recognizing his contributions to the culture and community. Directed by 2 M Digital x Raresmoke, the video follows Rio as he connects with his community during his first visit to his hometown since 2021, before he heads down I-75 to perform a star-studded show in Detroit. In the video for “I GO,” featuring FBLManny, the two rappers post up among sleek luxury cars, trading bars with effortless cool and showing off a chemistry that feels both casual and commanding.

The Background:

Emerging out of Flint in the late 2010s, Rio Da Yung OG helped transform his working class city into one of the most exciting rap hotbeds of the past several years. Elevated by notable co-signs from Detroit rappers like Peezy and buoyed by fan excitement over his freestyles and guest spots, Rio stormed onto the national scene, garnering overwhelming critical acclaim for releases like 2020’s City On My Back (named the #66 Best Album of the 2020s So Far by Pitchfork), Fiends Don’t Matter, 2 FACED, and his Dum and Dumber mixtape series with fellow Flint punchline artist Rmc Mike. During this time, Rio released some of his scene’s defining rap hits, including “Movie” ft. Louie Ray, “Chicken Coupe” ft. Peezy, and “1v1,” his collaboration with Lil Yachty. Just as his career was hitting high gear, Rio hit an obstacle in the form of a 4-year prison sentence. In late 2021, he left words of wisdom for his fans in the form of his “Last Day Out” freestyle, and went away. Even prison couldn’t stop Rio from putting in work. Fans rallied behind his 2019 hit “Legendary,” which grew into his biggest hit, generating hundreds of millions of streams.

In December 2024, Rio returned to the scene with a bang, releasing the epic first day out freestyle “RIO FREE,” racking up over 1 million views in a day and 8 million streams in just three days. The music video trended #1 on YouTube Music for three weeks straight. “RIO FREE” paved the way for the RIO FREE EP, which earned praise from Pitchfork, and its expansion RIO FREE (Something Happen), named one of the Best Albums of 2025 So Far by The FADER. In early January, Rio performed his first concert since 2021, selling out a star-studded show in Detroit, and in April, “Legendary” earned PLATINUM status from the RIAA, making Rio the first-ever rapper from Flint to earn a PLATINUM record. Rooted in raw feeling and West Coast ease, Karri’s new single and video “Oakland Baby” featuring Isaiah Falls turns late-night introspection into signature melodic finesse. “‘Oakland Baby’ came about when me, Jack Dine, and Lido were in the studio. Lido just started playing chords on the rhodes and it turned into this crazy song. Isaiah and I are really close, so we send each other songs all the time. I texted him the original demo. Then we linked up the same night and did the whole record together,” Karri explains.

A fixture on the R&B scene since releasing his viral 2023 hit “3AM In Oakland,” Karri is ready to level up this year. With over 13 million streams on Spotify alone, “3AM In Oakland” bubbled up on TikTok, helping propel Karri to more than 200k followers and earnng the attention of tastemakers like Drake and his associate OVO Chubbs. The strength of “3AM In Oakland” helped convince Chubbs to sign Karri to his Playing For Legacy label. Festival d’été de Québec Recap: July 9-13

FEQ Concludes Another Successful Year, Bringing International Superstars to Québec City, Including Shania Twain, Hozier, Slayer, Farruko, Ty Dolla $ign, Pixies, Kygo, and More

THE RECAP:

Taking over the historic capital of Québec for 11 days every July, Festival D’été de Québec is unlike any other festival in North America. With its affordable prices and multi-stage setup, FEQ is truly a community festival, uniting the city behind great music and a vibrant atmosphere. Each festival pass is fully transferable, allowing locals to see the artists they are most passionate about, and switch with friends with different tastes. The result is a festival crowd that is 100% engaged and enthusiastic, with fans who excitedly cheer and sing along, and often dress up according to the night’s theme.

The second half of this year’s festival recruited high-wattage superstars from all over the world. Canadian country legend Shania Twain brought the fireworks during her headlining night, which also featured a performance by GRAMMY-nominated country hitmaker Maren Morris. Beloved Irish singer-songwriter Hozier performed a set of his hits on the Plains of Abraham Bell Stage, while Indie Rock legends Pixies performed on the Loto-Québec Stage. July 9th was one of the festival’s most anticipated nights: EDM night, headlined by Norway’s Kygo and featuring electric sets by Don Diablo and Dutch deep house maestro Samuel Feldt.

July 11th was for the headbangers, as the iconic thrash group Slayer closed a night that also featured the cultishly beloved Mastodon. Those who didn’t love metal and hadn’t had their fill of dancing could head to Québec’s Place George V for another night of EDM, featuring veteran French house maestro Bob Sinclair, Cheat Codes, and more. The festival’s final night welcomed a performance by Puerto Rican reggaetonero Farruko, who performed his catalog hits and songs from his recent album CVRBON VRMOR with elevated production value.

Continuing a tradition that started in 1968, FEQ continues to buck trends, selling out and thrilling fans in a difficult environment for music festivals. With its expert curation, unbeatable atmosphere, and seamless integration into one of North America’s most charming cities, the city festival continues to be a must-visit as it approaches its 60th anniversary. The Song:

Making waves in the San Diego rock scene with their layered wall of sound, Tigers In Cairo’s signature blend of punk infused alt rock and atmospheric indie is both nostalgic and modern. The newly formed group, composed of veterans of the SoCal rock scene, returns with “My Saving Face,” an energetic new anthem. The young spitter connects with Glock and fellow Bluff City native Zo Trapalot for “Playaz Circle,” a new single and music video. Fresh off Key Glock’s “GLOCKAVELI Tour,” which featured both Woo and Zo as direct support, the rappers execute an expert three-man weave, trading flexes with the smoothness of an all-star point guard. The King Wonka-produced banger gives all three rappers the opportunity to shine, as they dance atop classical strings and thunderous Tennessee trap percussion. The beloved West Coast scenester shares the tracklist for his upcoming project, The Real Boutabag II. Giving his fans a deeper look into his life as a working rapper and new father, DB rhymes with a renewed focus on TRBII, motivated by his need to provide for his family. Since emerging from the South Sacramento street scene in 2020, DB.Boutabag has established himself as one of the most prolific slick talkers on either coast. Emerging out of Flint in the late 2010s, Rio Da Yung OG helped transform his working class city into one of the most exciting rap hotbeds of the past several years. Elevated by notable co-signs from Detroit rappers like Peezy and buoyed by fan excitement over his freestyles and guest spots, Rio stormed onto the national scene, garnering overwhelming critical acclaim for releases like 2020’s City On My Back (named the #66 Best Album of the 2020s So Far by Pitchfork), Fiends Don’t Matter, 2 FACED, and his Dum and Dumber mixtape series with fellow Flint punchline artist Rmc Mike. During this time, Rio released some of his scene’s defining rap hits, including “Movie” ft. Louie Ray, “Chicken Coupe” ft. Peezy, and “1v1,” his collaboration with Lil Yachty. Just as his career was hitting high gear, Rio hit an obstacle in the form of a 4-year prison sentence. In late 2021, he left words of wisdom for his fans in the form of his “Last Day Out” freestyle, and went away. Even prison couldn’t stop Rio from putting in work. Fans rallied behind his 2019 hit “Legendary,” which grew into his biggest hit, generating hundreds of millions of streams.

In December 2024, Rio returned to the scene with a bang, releasing the epic first day out freestyle “RIO FREE,” racking up over 1 million views in a day and 8 million streams in just three days. The music video trended #1 on YouTube Music for three weeks straight. “RIO FREE” paved the way for the RIO FREE EP, which earned praise from Pitchfork, and its expansion RIO FREE (Something Happen), named one of the Best Albums of 2025 So Far by The FADER. “Working on ‘Slauson Ave.’ just came about with me and the piano,” says Karri. “I had the idea of saying eyes like Slauson for a while. It was a play on words saying a girl had blue eyes, I just thought it was really dope. I was in San Francisco with Thomas [Madynski] and we just locked in and finished the song that night.”

A fixture on the R&B scene since releasing his viral 2023 hit “3AM In Oakland,” Karri is ready to level up this year. With over 13 million streams on Spotify alone, “3AM In Oakland” bubbled up on TikTok, helping propel Karri to more than 200k followers and earnng the attention of tastemakers like Drake and his associate OVO Chubbs. The strength of “3AM In Oakland” helped convince Chubbs to sign Karri to his Playing For Legacy label. In 2024, Karri continued to rack up co-signs (from Lil Baby, Kehlani, Saweetie, and more) and develop his sound, releasing the Late Night Slider Music EP in November. Festival d’été de Québec Recap: July 3-8

Continuing a Tradition That Started in 1968, the One-Of-A-Kind Québec City Festival Presented an Unbeatable Array of Stars From All Eras and Genres

THE RECAP:

Every summer since the late 1960s, Festival D’été Québec brings fans from all over the world together in a 11-day celebration of music and culture. During FEQ, denizens of the charming Québec City comes to life, enthusiastically welcoming artists and visitors alike. With five stages across the beautiful Québecois capital, including the 70,000 capacity Bell Stage on the historic Plains of Abraham, FEQ packs hundreds of artists over its 11 days, and the festive atmosphere attracts stars from all eras and genres.

This year’s festival was as busy and diverse as ever, with world famous superstars taking the main stage and Canadian up-and-comers filling out the side stages. Opening night was a showcase for veteran hitmakers, as the one-and-only Rod Stewart headlined, following a set from 80s soft rock all-star Richard Marx, while “Here” and “Stay” singer Alessia Cara showed out a city square on the Loto-Québec Stage. Friday night, July 4, was a showcase for Canadian pop-punk, led by the always-energetic Avril Lavigne and Montreal’s own Simple Plan. Those seeking moodier vibes could witness the virtuosic Thundercat, or Men I Trust, Québec City’s own terminally chill indie pop savants.

Benson Boone brought his signature backflips to the Bell Stage on Saturday night, following a standout performance by rising pop star Remi Wolf, while George Thorogood played the blues on the second stage. On Sunday, Def Leppard and Extreme returned fans to the hair metal era, while Wyclef Jean brought his global party to Place George V in the heart of the city. Monday was a celebration of Québecois folk rock and Acadian culture, led by Montreal’s Salebarbes, while Tuesday welcomed international rap artists, including French duo Bigflo & Oli and Québec’s Fredz. Canadian country artists Matt Lang, Jade Eagleson and Alli Walker threw it down in Place George V on Tuesday, as well.

Synopsis:

At 15, he took a life. Three days later, his brother’s life was taken. A moving chronicle of forgiveness, family, and the transformative power of art, SONGS FROM THE HOLE weaves music and mixed-media storytelling into an innovative documentary visual album.

Through clear-eyed narration and lyrical journal entries, incarcerated musician James “JJ’88” Jacobs reveals his innermost struggles as a person who has both committed and experienced violent harm. While serving a double-life prison sentence, he searches for healing and peace as he comes of age in this documentary-musical odyssey composed behind bars.

In a unique creative process director Contessa Gayles (The Feminist on Cellblock Y, Founder Girls, The Debutantes) collaborated with protagonist/writer JJ’88 and producer/music producer richie reseda to interweave the collective storytelling of the film’s non-fiction participants, with imagined memories, dreams and spiritual dialogues set to JJ’88’s original music. The result is a powerful mix of truth-telling and dreaming that reveal the potential for healing and liberation within us all.

Songs from the Hole EP is a 13 track melodic testament to survival and transformation releasing alongside the Netflix Original Film of the same title on August 13, 2025.

Originally written and recorded by JJ’88 in prison while serving a life sentence that began at age 15, it was later reproduced by richie reseda, Dylan Wiggins and Tairiq Bright & Garfield Bright III of Twiin Towers, keeping the original prison vocals. Luhh Dyl wants to keep you guessing. Poised to be the next big thing out of his city, the 21-year-old Detroit native has cultivated a devoted online fanbase, constantly re-defining himself, and his sound. The burgeoning rapper has coined his own unique subset of hip hop called “Cart Music ” built from a social media concept turned viral movement. From Michael Jackson to artists across genres, Luhh Dyl’s influences are heard in his eclectic sound, consisting of his raw lyricism and a punchy cadence layered on top of rhythmic, melodic beats. In his own words, he wants to make music that is “fun and unexpected,” saying “people have to listen carefully, because they won’t know what I’m going to say next.”

To his family, he’s Dylan – to his friends, Dyl for short, so when it came time to choose a rap moniker, the rapper says Luhh Dyl was a no-brainer. Dyl’s introduction to music came at an early age, freestyling with his brothers & friends. At 17 years old, he went to the studio for the first time, in search of a coping mechanism after his cousin’s passing. Born JD McCrary, JayDon might be young, but he has a remarkable resume–he’s been captivating audiences as an actor, dancer, and singer for over a decade while cementing himself as an artist for any era. JayDon broke onto the scene with performances on NBC’s Little Big Shots and collaborated with Childish Gambino on the iconic album Awaken, My Love!, which they performed together at the 2018 Grammys at the tender age of 9. With viral covers like his rendition of The Jackson 5’s “Who’s Loving You,” JayDon has quickly earned fans worldwide. At 10-years-old, he was the youngest male solo artist to sign with Disney/Hollywood Records, leading to his role voicing Simba in the 2019 live-action The Lion King. Produced by Myles’ fellow MTL native Tilt, “Drive Me Crazy” rides a sumptuous, stuttering bassline and ripples of futuristic synths to adorn Myles’s falsetto-driven situationship saga, in which he fends off the advances of a woman who only wants him for his fame and fortune. Directed by Dan LeMoyne, who uses a 4:3 aspect ratio and natural film grain to recreate the aesthetic of Myles’s beloved VHS videos, the video for “Drive Me Crazy” follows Myles as a chance encounter with a mysterious woman (portrayed by Natasha Sharabura) turns a routine post-show cab ride into a treacherous journey. The woman uses her voodoo to control Myles’s car, causing it to swerve and eventually, in a shot inspired partially by Inception, submerge under water. “Drive Me Crazy” features cameos from Toronto singer-songwriters Dylan Sinclair and 646yf4t.

“The inspiration behind the video was to create something powerful and unique with a strong emotional twist,” says Myles Lloyd. “Sometimes life gets overwhelming — whether it’s relationships, work, or day-to-day stress — and we all hit a point where we feel like we’re being driven crazy. This video was my way of showing what that feels like. I was also inspired by a scene from Travis Scott’s Circus Maximus film, where he’s in a taxi being driven through the city, slowly losing it as the chaos of the streets mirrors what he’s feeling inside. The Background:

Allstar JR has been rapping since his middle school years, when he and Tee Grizzley founded the rap group All Stars Ball Hard, building a cult following around the city for their hustle-hard anthems. In 2016, after run-ins with the law derailed his hoop dreams, JR released his first mixtape, Get A Bag Or Go Home, emphasizing his unparalleled work ethic and determination to achieve independent success. Get A Bag Or Go Home became JR’s signature mixtape series, inspiring the name of his record label, Get A Bag Records. The artist and CEO scored several street hits over the ensuing decade, notably the 2017 single “Cases Pending,” which has millions of streams across platforms. In 2018, as the city of Detroit started to get national notice for its busy rap scene, JR started his second signature mixtape series, Organized Crime, home to his local hit “Million Dollar Thoughts.”

Recently, JR has become one of his city’s dot connectors, fluidly moving between the sounds and scenes that populate the 313. He has collaborated with everyone in the city–he’s equally comfortable talking shop with Icewear Vezzo on “Ice Bag,” engaging in stick talk with Babyface Ray on “3 Macs,” and swapping punchlines with BabyTron on “MMA.” “MMA” appeared on his 2023 album Organized Crime 2, JR’s first release in his partnership with EMPIRE. Last year, JR remained prolific, releasing 4 albums including his solo album Parked At The Bank, featuring appearances from CEO Trayle, Babyfxce E, and Baby Money, Casino Bag 2 with LOM Rudy, and Overlordz Get A Bag with Overlord Scooch.

Chicago duo Two Depressed Kids (TDK) always wear their hearts on their sleeves. The standouts from Lupe Fiasco’s 1st & 15th label transform their heartbreak into a widescreen ballad, sharing “GOODBYE,” their new single and music video. Produced by Yuki Tasaka, who layers epic strings and chugging guitars over crashing hip-hop drums, the song finds the duo struggling to get over a breakup, as they vent their feelings through melody and rhyme. The song culminates in a ferocious pop-punk hook, in which they kiss off their former lover for good: “Goodbye, and good riddance/But I don’t do farewell/These lies I’ve been living/Will drag me straight to hell.” In the video, the duo composed of Jake and Drew watches a whirlwind relationship go through its phases, from infatuation to exasperation.

“GOODBYE” is TDK’s first new single of the year, following up last year’s EP Balloons At A Funeral. Flint, MI’s Rio Da Yung OG used his sharp sense of humor and candid authenticity to build a fanbase fervent enough to support him through legal issues that might have derailed a lesser artist’s career. The Michigan rap titan’s comeback culminates this summer, with the release of his upcoming album, F.L.I.N.T. (Feeling Like I’m Not Thru). The follow-up to his 2025 EP RIO FREE, recorded shortly after Rio ended a bid in federal prison in December 2024, and its February expansion RIO FREE (Something Happen), F.L.I.N.T. is one of Rio’s most focused and cohesive projects to date, paying tribute to the hardscrabble hometown that raised him and the fans who continue to hold him down. F.L.I.N.T. Produced by a frequent Rio collaborator, Michigan rap sound architect Danny G Beats, “Sneaky B” is a endless cascade of out-of-pocket punchlines, as Rio locks in over detuned synth strings and blown-out 808s. Emerging out of Flint in the late 2010s, Rio Da Yung OG helped transform his working class city into one of the most exciting rap hotbeds of the past several years. Elevated by notable co-signs from Detroit rappers like Peezy and buoyed by fan excitement over his freestyles and guest spots, Rio stormed onto the national scene, garnering overwhelming critical acclaim for releases like 2020’s City On My Back (named the #66 Best Album of the 2020s So Far by Pitchfork), Fiends Don’t Matter, 2 FACED, and his Dum and Dumber mixtape series with fellow Flint punchline artist Rmc Mike. During this time, Rio released some of his scene’s defining rap hits, including “Movie” ft. Louie Ray, “Chicken Coupe” ft. Peezy, and “1v1,” his collaboration with Lil Yachty. Just as his career was hitting high gear, Rio hit an obstacle in the form of a 4-year prison sentence. In late 2021, he left words of wisdom for his fans in the form of his “Last Day Out” freestyle, and went away. Even prison couldn’t stop Rio from putting in work. Fans rallied behind his 2019 hit “Legendary,” which grew into his biggest hit, generating hundreds of millions of streams.

In December 2024, Rio returned to the scene with a bang, releasing the epic first day out freestyle “RIO FREE,” racking up over 1 million views in a day and 8 million streams in just three days. The music video trended #1 on YouTube Music for three weeks straight. “RIO FREE” paved the way for the RIO FREE EP, which earned praise from Pitchfork, and its expansion RIO FREE (Something Happen), named one of the Best Albums of 2025 So Far by The FADER. In early January, Rio performed his first concert since 2021, selling out a star-studded show in Detroit, and in April, “Legendary” earned PLATINUM status from the RIAA, making Rio the first-ever rapper from Flint to earn a PLATINUM record. Rio has also been a willing collaborator, jumping on the viral “Shark” with Jorjiana, recently performed at the NBA Finals, appearing on Money Man’s new album, and reuniting with Rmc Mike for “Bragging Rights,” currently trending at #28 on YouTube for music with nearly 1 million views since its release last week.

In July, Rio embarks upon his first-ever nationwide tour: the “Welcome Home Tour,” featuring support from Baby Money, FBLManny, and many special guests. The epic tour spans over 60 dates, kicking off in Detroit on July 17th (Music Hall Detroit) and passing through San Francisco on August 10th (Regency Ballroom), Los Angeles on August 12th (The Belasco Theater), Houston on August 30th (9pm Music Venue), and New York on September 24th (Webster Hall) before concluding in Chicago on October 11th (Patio Theater).

In 2016, after run-ins with the law derailed his hoop dreams, JR released his first mixtape, Get A Bag Or Go Home, emphasizing his unparalleled work ethic and determination to achieve independent success. Get A Bag Or Go Home became JR’s signature mixtape series, inspiring the name of his record label, Get A Bag Records. The artist and CEO scored several street hits over the ensuing decade, notably the 2017 single “Cases Pending,” which has millions of streams across platforms. In 2018, as the city of Detroit started to get national notice for its busy rap scene, JR started his second signature mixtape series, Organized Crime, home to his local hit “Million Dollar Thoughts.”

Recently, JR has become one of his city’s dot connectors, fluidly moving between the sounds and scenes that populate the 313. He has collaborated with everyone in the city–he’s equally comfortable talking shop with Icewear Vezzo on “Ice Bag,” engaging in stick talk with Babyface Ray on “3 Macs,” and swapping punchlines with BabyTron on “MMA.” “MMA” appeared on his 2023 album Organized Crime 2, JR’s first release in his partnership with EMPIRE. Last year, JR remained prolific, releasing 4 albums including his solo album Parked At The Bank, featuring appearances from CEO Trayle, Babyfxce E, and Baby Money, Casino Bag 2 with LOM Rudy, and Overlordz Get A Bag with Overlord Scooch.
