TikTok Treats, Week of April 10th

TikTok Helped Usher Regional Mexican Artists Like Fuerza Regida, Peso Pluma, and Carin Leon  to the Billboard Charts

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more.

TikTok is home to a diverse and passionate community of Latin music fans, who help shine a spotlight on the vast spectrum of sounds that originate in Latin America. For many years, Reggaeton dominated Latin music charts in the United States, but while reggaeton is still exceedingly popular on the platform–Karol G & Shakira’s “TQG” was the top trending Latin song on TikTok last week–TikTok has helped raise the commercial fortunes for traditional and regional Latin genres that don’t get as much radio airplay.

Leading the charge is Regional Mexican music–a catch-all term that encompasses genres including norteño, corridos, and banda–which evolved from a non-factor to a mainstay on the Billboard charts, thanks in part to regional songs’ popularity on TikTok. In 2021, “Botella Tras Botella” (344k video creations) by Christian Nodal & Gera.MX, became the first regional Mexican hit to chart on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Soy Él Unico” by Yahritza y Su Esencia, which first made waves as an original sound on TikTok, debuted at #20 on the Hot 100.

This year, regional Mexican music is having a massive moment on TikTok, with 23-year-old artist Peso Pluma leading the charge. With over 1.6  million followers on TikTok, Peso Pluma is responsible for some of the year’s biggest hits, including the Natanael Cano collaboration “PRC” (261k video creations), which rocketed to popularity behind a dance that makes use of the song’s distinctive trumpet hook, and “Ella Baila Sola,” a collaboration with Mexican group Eslabon Armado that generated over 470k video creations. Just this week, Peso is making waves with “La Bebe,” his collaboration with Yng Lvcas, which generated over 40k creations and landed at #2 on TikTok’s top trending songs of the past week. Thanks in part to TikTok, Peso Pluma has 5 different hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including “PRC” (#64), “La Bebe” (#26), and “Ella Baila Sola,” which just became the highest-charting regional Mexican songs in chart history at #17.

Check out more recent trends and tidbits from the world of music on TikTok:

  • A regular in the TikTok trending charts, Flo Milli is back again with her feature on Dallas rapper Lah Pat’s “Rodeo (Remix).” The Ginuwine-sampling song has over 145k video creations, as creators attempt a new dance, choreographed by @tylajenae_. Lah Pat and Flo Milli have each done their part to boost the dance, highlighting and duetting their favorite renditions. The song debuted last week at No. 35 on Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay and No. 50 on R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, marking Lah Pat’s first-ever Billboard chart appearances.
  • The Super Mario Bros. Movie is the top grossing film of the year so far, and TikTok creators are showing their appreciation for the movie by using the soundtrack. The main beneficiary is “Peaches” (15k creations), the bombastic ballad sung by Jack Black in character as Bowser. Creators (including Ryan Reynolds) are united in their belief that Black “didn’t have to go so crazy,” but certainly appreciate that he did (even if they worry about how the song will affect their 2023 Spotify Wrapped).
  • K-Pop group BLACKPINK commands a following of 40 million passionate fans on TikTok, who help make sure that anything the band touches reaches the trending charts. Following in the footsteps of LISA, whose “Money” (4.1 million creations) was a big hit on TikTok last year, BP member JISOO struck gold with “FLOWER,” which has over 740k creations since its March 31 release. The song inspired the #FlowerChallenge, announced by BLACKPINK last week, in which creators make a flower shape with their hands and attempt the casual, and easily repeatable dance JISOO hits in the song’s music video. OThe trending song currently sits at #12 on Spotify’s Global Top 50 and at #2 on Billboard’s Global 200 chart.
