TikTok Treats, Week of September 12th
A Busy Week Of TikTok Music Trends Brings New Trends From Beyoncé and Lizzo, Relationship Dramas from SZA, and End of Summer Vibes From Tim McGraw
The News:
Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. Check out this week’s trends below:
- An ode to the rich history of club music, Beyonce’s new album RENAISSANCE has a wide selection of tracks that make you move your feet. On TikTok, creators’ danceable RENAISSANCE song of choice in recent weeks has been the groovy “CUFF IT” (61.5K+ creations), which sparked the #CuffItChallenge on the platform. ”CUFF IT” inspires creators to hit the simple, catchy dance moves with their coworker during a shift, with their friends before a day of hitting the town, and with their significant other before date night. Celebrities such as Ciara and Tinashe are also feeling groovy and enjoying the dance trend, using the song to get ready for Beyonce’s roller disco-themed birthday party and to gear up for a live performance with a team of dancers. If you’re in need of a tutorial for the dance to join in on the trend, TikTok creator @smoothjasmine has you covered
- Country icon Tim McGraw brought Labor Day-appropriate vibes to TikTok with his 1999 track “Something Like That,” which kicked off a lighthearted trend on the platform in recent weeks. In over 27.4K creations, creators live out the lyrics “It was Labor Day Weekend, I was seventeen / I bought a coke and some gasoline” with their friends at the gas station and as they gas up for a ride on the lake. Others are taking a more comedic approach to the trend as they pretend to be a confused gas station employee and reveal that they had to ask the gas station attendant to leave so that they could record themselves participating in the trend. On his own account, Tim McGraw encourages fans to continue making “Something Like That” creations with a compilation of some of his favorites he’s seen so far.
- Creators of the TikTok community often use music to spotlight their loved ones. Inspired by SZA’s “Awkward,” creators tap into their emotions as they show off their significant others. Garnering over 201K creations on the original and sped-up versions of the song, the R&B ballad finds creators sharing photo montages with their significant other using SZA’s emphatic lines, “I cannot love everybody/But you isn’t anybody/You look at me different, so I let you see my body.” The trend also inspires creators to reveal intimate details about their relationships and document sweet gestures for their girlfriends. On the contrary, creators use the sound to share some of their own toxic relationship experiences. Producer Benny Blanco interacted with the sound of his TikTok page, teasing new music from SZA, who makes a cameo in his video.
- TikTok creators use feel-good songs to curate a positive vibe on their pages. The latest feel-good jam to inspire the community is “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready),” the latest single by self-proclaimed “Queen Of TikTok” Lizzo. Previously trending for lighthearted songs such as “Good as Hell” (252.1K+ creations) and “About Damn Time” (4.1M+ total creations) Lizzo has creators creators putting their best foot forward as they do renditions of a dance choreographed by creator duo @brookeandjessie. Creators show off their choreography as they celebrate the first day of school, spend time with their families, and pump themselves up for the weekend. The song has over 39k video creations, including multiple by JoJo Siwa, who enthusiastically participated in the trend, doing the dance with YouTube star Colleen Ballinger and solo in the middle of a driveway. Lizzo kept the dance trend going on her TikTok, cutting a rug in the middle of Times Square in her MTV VMAs attire.
- Rising rapper Yeat is no stranger to TikTok virality, starting trends with songs like “Money So Big,” “Swërved It,” and “Rich Minion,” which inspired the box office-obliterating #Gentleminions phenomenon. The Oregon-born, L.A.-based rapper has a new hit with “Talk” (#42 on the Billboard Hot 100), and its rising popularity on TikTok might make it his biggest hit yet. The song inspired a new, easily repeatable dance trend, where creators drop to the floor and gently rock back and forth. The song has over 9.2k video creations since its release in early September, and has proven to be the perfect song to emphasize how to spoil a little sister, to reveal the depths of a codependent relationship, or confuse Stranger Things villain Vecna with your taste in music. As always with Yeat’s releases, the song has inspired a galaxy of memes that try to get to the bottom of the rapper’s mysterious appeal, but you don’t have to be a Yeat Professor to understand that “Talk” is gonna blow
- Colorado-based DJ/producer Disco Lines earned a massive TikTok hit earlier this year with his song “BABY GIRL,” inspiring over 54k video creations. The young artist is back on the trending charts this week with his euphoric and sample-heavy song “All I Want Is You.” Released in 2021, several months before “BABY GIRL,” “All I Want Is You” has become an even bigger hit (91k video creations)–it’s a versatile song with positive vibes that has reached several corners of TikTok, including accounts that focus on exercise, pets, and nail art. Perhaps most notably, the song provided the background music for a birthday party celebrating the life of a 175-pound Tortoise named Tiptoe.
