TikTok Treats, Week of August 22nd
Rihanna Soundtracks a Series of Music-Related Word Games, ROSALÍA Chews Gum, and Acoustic Versions of Electronic Songs Get Fans in Their Feelings
The News:
Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. See below for this week’s trends, which show how TikTok music trends run the gamut from goofy to sentimental:
- ROSALÍA is high on the list of TikTok’s favorite Latinx artists, previously trending with songs such as “DESPECHÁ” (1.2M+ creations) and “SAOKO” (233.6K+ creations). Adding another viral track under her belt from her MOTOMAMI project, ROSALÍA is once again trending on TikTok with her hyperactive song “BIZCOCHITO.” The fast paced song earned over 187.9K+ creations, inspiring a hilarious trend of creators imitating ROSALÍA’s signature gum-chewing. The trend finds creators showing off their best attitude-filled, gum-chewing renditions with their friends, as well as doing the Spanish singer’s facial expression out in public on a busy street. The sound also inspires creators to recreate the dance moves from the MOTOMAMI tour, created by choreographer and TikTok creator @mecnungiasar. ROSALÍA took notice of the song’s virality, reacting to creators’ imitations of her on-stage mannerisms on her own page.
- It’s been six years since Rihanna dropped her most recent album, but her music is still making her presence felt on TikTok. The iconic introduction to her massive 2016 hit “Work” is making the rounds on the platform, soundtracking a word game-filled trend about celebrities meeting their doppelgangers and nemeses. Clever creators use the song’s percolating intro to explore what might happen if Summer Walker ever met Winter Sprinter, Mitski hit the slopes with Mitsnowboard, GIVEON ran into Takeoff, or SZA encountered her mortal enemies Rock and Paper. With over 323k video creations to date, this humorous trend will have to suffice for TikTok creators looking for their Rihanna fix–at least until she finally follows up ANTI and drops PRO.
- Artists on TikTok often release sneak peeks of their new music on the platform, whetting the appetite of fans hungry to discover new songs and helping boost the song upon official release. Genevieve Stokes previewed a snippet of her airy ballad “Habits” on TikTok in mid-July, and the song is receiving a boost from creators following its release in August. Garnering 195.2K creations, the song soundtracks heartwarming stories about creators’ children, reflections on being in a healthy relationship, and explorations of the drawbacks of long distance relationships. The song also sparked a sweet trend of creators testing TikTok’s artistic AI filter as they type in their birthdays to see the results, or pose questions about how their departed loved ones are doing. Genevieve Stokes also promoted her song on her TikTok page, sharing the official lyrics and capturing a candid moment with a friendly pet.
- Pop artist JVKE emerged on TikTok in 2021 and has since amassed a major following, with 7.4 million on TikTok and over 10 million monthly listeners on Spotify. He made waves with songs like “Upside Down” (12m video creations, 91 million Spotify streams) which mashes up popular TikTok songs KBFR’s “Hood Baby” and Jack Stauber’s “Buttercup” to create a breezy banger, and originals like “this is what falling in love feels like” (188 million Spotify streams). Most recently, JVKE revealed his new song “golden hour” in a touching video where he performs the song on his piano for his old piano teacher. The video, in which the piano teacher gets visibly emotional by the skill on display, helped the song make an immediate impact on TikTok and beyond, generating over 14 million views in 24 hours and more than doubling JVKE’s daily streams across platforms.
- 21 Savage is a TikTok favorite, seeing success on the platform with his verse on Drake’s “Knife Talk,” and more recently, with his verse on “Cash In Cash Out” with Pharrell and Tyler The Creator. Now, the Slaughter Gang chieftain is back to soundtrack another TikTok trend with “Glock In My Lap,” his 2020 collaboration with Metro Boomin. The TikTok community is breathing new life into the ominous track with a comedic trend where creators express shock, confusion, and self-realization. The sound is fitting for airport attendants who can’t believe how much people are willing to pay for their overweight bags, dog moms who are confused about why people think they would sell their dog, and tenants who are excited about their new apartment but quickly realize how expensive it can be to make it feel like home.
- Producer duo SLANDER and singer Dylan Matthew have the TikTok community in their feelings with the acoustic version of their song “Love Is Gone.” Amassing over 1.6M creations, “Love Is Gone (Acoustic)” soundtracks sad cartoon animation stories, creators reflecting on the song’s lyrics, and parents dealing with the realization that all their children have grown up and moved out of the house. On their own TikTok, SLANDER shows love to fans who are getting in their feelings with the song, even sharing clips of the crowd passionately singing the lyrics about heartbreak at their live shows.
- Latin pop star Camilo and well-known Norteño banda Grupo Firme recently shared a new song “Alaska,” which combines traditional and modern sounds to create an addictive concoction. With over 192k video creations to date, the horn-filled banger inspires videos in which creators celebrate their relationships, transform from casual wear into cowboy-themed regalia, and pick their cerveza favorita. The marvelously mustachioed Camilo has been leading the charge on his own page, making charming videos that highlight the song’s lyrics, capture cute moments from his own relationship, and show off his hoverboarding skills.
