Beyoncé Keeps TikTok Buzzing, Ryan Tedder Inspires Top Gun Trend, Yung Gravy Shoots His Shot, and More On TikTok
The News:
Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. From Beyoncé’s house hit to OneRepublic’s Top Gun: Maverick pop bop, here’s what sounds made waves on TikTok this week:
- TikTok is buzzing – Queen Beyoncé has officially made her presence known on the platform by posting her first video creation spotlighting her beloved #Beyhive. Featuring Cardi B and other creators reacting, dancing, and saging away bad energy to Bey’s new house music-inspired single “BREAK MY SOUL” (92.8K+ creations), the video compilation on Beyoncé’s account racked up over 4M views in under 24 hours, and has since amassed over 21.8M views. Beyoncé credited every one of the featured creators in the comments of the video, and creators like @nene_la_shiro, @ayoaustimus, and @burr_iam are expressing their excitement for being noticed and credited by Queen Bey. With her full catalog now available on the platform and her new album Renaissance coming next week, look out for many more Bey-inspired creations from TikTok creators in the coming weeks.
- OneRepublic lead singer Ryan Tedder earned some viral recognition on TikTok earlier this summer after a fan posted an appreciation video about his prolific songwriting work. Now, his music is trending once again. Recorded for the recent Top Gun: Maverick soundtrack, OneRepublic’s new single “I Ain’t Worried” (48.3K+ creations) is inspiring creators to demonstrate different types of kids on water slides, exhibit how pilots handle their daddy duties on flights, and reveal their methods for shaving their facial hair during lunch with friends. The OneRepublic TikTok account has been actively engaging with the sound, posting creations of Tedder showing off his Top Gun-inspired mustache and telling the world the members of the group are fans of the character “Bob” in the action film. Tedder has remained active on his own page as well, working with Lukas Graham to document the process of writing their new song “I Wish You Were Here” in a weeks-long TikTok back-and-forth.
- Alternative R&B darling Steve Lacy reflects on his main “Bad Habit” regarding love interests in his new single and the TikTok community is loving the vibe and lyrics of the song. Garnering over 73.6K creations since the end of June, the chill track convinces creators to discuss why they love getting ready to go out with their group of girlfriends, try to fight their love for the song but eventually give in, and channel their inner Steve Lacy vocals. Posting for his fans and fellow guitarists, Steve Lacy even posted a tutorial for playing the song’s chords on guitar on his account.
- Midwest rapper SleazyWorld Go broke out in a big way with the help of the TikTok community, who helped him make his Billboard debut with viral hit “Sleazy Flow” (309K total creations across multiple sounds). The Missouri-via-Michigan rapper is creating buzz on the platform once again with his Offset-assisted song, “Step 1.” Previously previewed on TikTok in April, where it generated over 31k creations in the two months before its official release, “Step 1” boasts over 302K total creations across multiple sounds. Using his emphatic titular line, creators stitch quotable moments from celebrity interviews, reality TV stars, and internet sensations to share mottos they stand by. SleazyWorld Go also interacted with the song on his TikTok, reacting to creators’ “Step 1” challenges and sharing their versions of his dance challenge. Gaining momentum beyond TikTok, “Step 1” reached over 4.4M Spotify streams since its official release in June.
- As proven by the successes of artists such as Em Beihold and GAYLE, the TikTok community has become a perfect audience for rising artists to test the temperature on their unreleased music. After previewing his song “Hotel” on TikTok in early May, rapper Lawsy is receiving the same support from TikTok creators. Reaching over 468.5K+ total creations, the song and its catchy hook inspired a trend of creators moving in slow-motion as they hilariously respond to relatable situations. In recent videos, creators show off their exquisite pizza roll cooking skills, run for cover after sending a risky text message, and bask in the pain of dating with strict parents. Luxuriating in his own viral moment, Lawsy promoted his song on his TikTok, reacting to creators’ videos and recording himself vibing out to the song. Receiving a boost from TikTok, “Hotel” cracked the top 10 of Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart and has generated over 2M+ streams to date.
- Lawsy and SleazyWorld Go aren’t the only artists passing the vibe check with the TikTok community. Minnesota rapper Yung Gravy shared a clip of a verse from his song “Betty (Get Money)” on his TikTok ahead of its official music video release in mid-June, and it has since become one of the most popular tracks on the platform. Sampling Rick Astley’s immortal hit “Never Gonna Give You Up,” the song garnered over 510k total creations (across multiple sounds) since Gravy posted the clip. The upbeat track sparks a trend of creators asking their moms what they think of Yung Gravy and if they’d date him. While some creators’ moms found him to be attractive, others were not interested. In other recent videos, creators shine a spotlight on their moms with photos and videos. Yung Gravy also participated in the trend, reacting to videos of many creators who identify as mothers. The success of “Betty (Get Money)” on TikTok helped Yung Gravy reach the top 5 on Spotify’s US Viral 50 chart.
