TikTok Treats, Week of July 11th

Justin Timberlake Takes It To The Bridge, Yeat and His Minions Inspire a Nationwide Craze, Naeyon Makes a Splash With Her Solo Debut, and More From the World of Music on TikTok

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. Here’s what sounds made TikTok tick this week:

  • A big name has arrived on TikTok, and he’s here to rock your body, then take you to the bridge. Justin Timberlake started his TikTok career today, and he brought his full catalog with him. Fans can use official audio from massive hits like “Cry Me A River,” “Suit & Tie,” “Mirrors,” “What Goes Around…Comes Around,” and many others in their own videos. JT was already a major presence on TikTok with his hit “SexyBack” ft. Timbaland, which has over 1.4 million video creations and was one of the Top 10 Comeback Tracks on TikTok in 2021. The former *NSYNC singer (we will never forget!)  posted his first video today, demonstrating the charm and self-effacing humor for which he is beloved.
  • Illumination’s cute and mischievous Minions might seem like a strange match with money-counting rage rapper Yeat, but their unexpected collaboration “Rich Minion” has played a major part in one of the hottest trends of the summer. Inspired by TikTok and the ascendant #GentleMinions trend, created by Australian teenager Bill Hirst, Minions maniacs across the globe are dressing up in their Sunday best and rushing to theaters to see Despicable Me 3: The Rise Of Gru. Fans of all ages partake in the trend, and “Rich Minion” is the soundtrack, the song’s combination of outlandish flexing and gibberish ad-libs providing the perfect backdrop to the absurd spectacle. The song has become Yeat’s biggest TikTok hit to date (eclipsing songs like “Money So Big” and “Swërved It”), generating over 555k video creations, and has made a major splash outside the app: the song made its Billboard Hot 100 debut this week. Meanwhile, the #GentleMinions trend (128 million views on the hashtag) has been credited for helping to drive The Rise Of Gru’s debut atop the box office.
  • The TikTok community loves Latin music, and a large variety of Latin genres flourishing the platform, from modern genres like reggaeton and dembow, to more traditional styles like norteño and cumbia. The latest cumbia hit to cross over into wide TikTok success is Colombian band Grupo La Cumbia’s 2020 song “Cumbia Buena,” which is the soundtrack to a trend that uses TikTok’s “Waves” filter to comedic effect. Garnering over 2.8M creations, “Cumbia Buena” inspires creators to let their comedic personalities shine. People use the filter to show how they celebrate their Fridaysreenact the feeling of playing video games after too many drinks, and do different poses wearing a Harry Potter-inspired mask. In other videos, the accordion-heavy song soundtracks creators’ cooking videosstop-motion animations, and couples’ pranks.
  • Remix culture thrives on TikTok, as creators find innovative ways to flip throwback hits into fresh, new sounds. Remixing Nas’ 1996 song “Shootouts,” Izzamuzzic’s “Shootout” inspires creators to reimagine their appearances. Reaching over 1.8M creations since its release in late June, the mellow instrumental soundtracks creators’ attempts to predict how they’d look if they made a change in their appearance before they show the results of their makeovers. While some creators experiment with new hair colors, others show off their full-body tattoos, and yet other TikTok users share photo and video montages of their significant others. The song is gaining momentum beyond TikTok – “Shootout” boasts over 1.7M Spotify streams to date.
  • K-Pop supergroup TWICE singer Nayeon recently made a major splash on Billboard with her solo debut EP Im Nayeon, which topped the Top Album Sales chart with the largest sales week of 2022 in the U.S. for an album by a woman or female-led act. The TikTok community has helped elevate Nayeon’s solo success, running up the EP’s lead single “POP!,” as they try their hand at the catchy choreography from the vibrant music video. With 777K+ total creations across two sounds, “POP!” inspires creators to dance with their besties on the beachwith their cute families, and while making a stop for coffee. The rest of TWICE joined in on the fun, showing their dedicated fans how they hit the moves.
