Having emerged after a lengthy stretch in the prison system during his teenage years, A-Wax turned to rap and came up in the game quickly, becoming an underground sensation. To date A-Wax has moved over 200,000 units, independently. In 2012, A-Wax released Everybody Loves Me: Chapter 1., with features from French Montana, Styles P., and more. He followed that with the announcement of his new label, Pie-Rx Recordz. and the release of his Pie-Rx Muzik mixtape. A lot of rappers make music about the penitentiary. Few can say that they learned their craft while incarcerated. Just a teenager, A-Wax learned to write 16-bar verses while serving multiple years in the prison system. When A-Wax returned home to nearby Pittsburg in his early twenties, he had an iron-clad reputation in the Bay area streets and a new skill and trade to share his wisdom.

A-Wax came up in the rap game the old-fashioned way, selling CDs hand-to-hand and through Mom & Pop stores across the region. “I learned a lot from Woodie and guys like JT The Bigga Figga…I’m blessed to be from that era, and still b” says the young emcee with a reported 200,000 CD sales to his credit.

Although his national breakthrough is happening now, A-Wax has sustained a career through having a unique story to tell. “My whole thing with this music is a Scared Straight approach: I’m a convict, I have gang tattoos, and it may look cool, but you might not know the cost of it all – what happens in prison and what happens on these streets. I want people to know that you shouldn’t lose your life as you know it simply to learn that you miss it.” Additionally, A-Wax comes from a place largely unheard of in Hip Hop. “Pittsburg is a melting pot,” A-Wax says, literally, noting that much of his family worked in the steel mills of the California city took its name from a city in the east. “My family is Italian. But growing up in Pittsburg, I wasn’t aware of color. Everybody just plays basketball together, goes to school together, sells dope together and goes to work together. It’s really diverse.” Tapping into that diversity with a tangible message has allowed A-Wax to solidify his status as a regional star, who has been patiently building towards national buzz.

The national break-through nearly happened, first with Baby Bash’s rise to prominence, then in a lengthy tenure with Konvict Muzik in the mid-’00s. “I’m forever grateful for that opportunity,” recalls A-Wax. Akon’s brother Bu took the West Coast artist under his wing and brought him to Atlanta as the fledgling label cemented its early status with Lady Gaga, T-Pain and Kardinal Offishall. “When I first met up with them, I thought my music was ready for the national level. In reality, I was picking really East and West Coast beats. I was a fish out of water.”

While A-Wax says the relationship is strong to this day, Konvict and the rapper parted ways due to creative differences. In 2012, A-Wax released Everybody Loves Me: Chapter 1., with features from French Montana, Styles P., Mistah FAB, and more. He followed that with the announcement of his new label, Pie-Rx Recordz and the release of his Pie-Rx Muzik mixtape. Now, A-Wax is prepping the release of his latest album, Jesus Malverde, which includes features from Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Cashis, and YG Hootie, and will be released Feburary 26, 2013.

After lessons learned in the street, tutelage from a late Bay Area legend, and ties to some of the biggest national and regional stars in the game, A-Wax is the latest Northern California voice with a colorful landscape under his feet and a one-of-a-kind story to tell.
