Album/Video: Tynethys – Thyluxe + “King Sphinx”
“…a new wave of pillowy-soft West Coast tunes.” – Pitchfork
“…proves that math is for losers and rap is awesome.” –Vice’s NOISEY
“…an airy, narcotic project that floats along and passes in a blur.” –The FADER
“Tynethys, aka Nicky Samuel, carries on the mantle of where that ‘cloud rap’ hype is headed, mixing analogue tricks seen and heard on old televisions and VCRs that brings out the ghosts from yesterday’s machines for the new synth terrains of today’s sonic atmospheres and introspective verses” – Impose Mag
“There’s the frazzled electro of ‘Stress’, a Prince impression on ‘Trackstar’s and a few forays into gauzy, grayscale R&B — something for all moods and all highs.” – FACT Mag
“…it seems only a matter of time before Tynethys blows up.” – ACCLAIM Mag
“I don’t even rap, I art,” proclaims Sacramento producer/rapper/singer Tynethys on “TFZ,” a Friendzone-produced single from the eclectic artist’s Thyluxe album, which is now available on iTunes. Debuted in April by Okayplayer and featured on FACT Mag’s “Mixtapes of the Week,” Thyluxe, is a synth-heavy, refined cloud-rap record. Like any good artistic body of work, Thyluxe is challenging. Tynethys’ sound is a melting pot of disparate sounds, unafraid to manipulate his voice or rap over cacophonous electronic driven self-produced beats, while tying the whole affair into the ’80s – songs like“Humpday” and “Machyne” would make any disco fanatic proud. Thyluxe as a whole is like watching an episode of Miami Vice on acid. The songs are constantly morphing into new formations, while taking the listener on an auditory trip that very few rappers dare to tread.
In addition to the album becoming available on iTunes, Tynethys delivers a glossy, time-stretched visual for “King Sphinx,” which shows the artist reflecting and reminiscing as he gazes out a foggy window and strolls alongside some train tracks. “What if E-40 fucked with bro? What if Dre fucked with bro?” he asks on the track’s opening verse. He continues, “I get up, go to work, wanna go bezerk/ can’t afford a shirt, then how’d I earn this purp?” In a year where rap championed the “weird” with artists like Young Thug and Chance the Rapper, Tynethys proved that things can get even more outrageous, while remaining forward-thinking. In the first quarter of 2015, Tynethys is prepared to release a beat tape, in addition to more new music as the year progresses.

To hear him tell it, Sacramento’s Tynethys’ (pronounced “Teen-theez”) musical style is like “selling crack in a Sub-Zero outfit.” For the MC/producer, Mortal Kombat is just one of his inspirations, along with rap heroes Mac Dre, Kid Cudi, and T-Nutty. Producing and writing his songs in the hours between midnight and sunrise, Tynethys is a jovial, pensive creator with a stoner’s laugh and street vernacular. Tyne’s style is a fuzzy free-form that speaks not only to his worldview from his bedroom, but many like him. With Thyluxe, a follow-up to last year’s Lost Angeles album, Tynethys believes he’s hitting his best stride. “I feel like it is the truest representation of me. I did it without trying too hard.” Besides his own work, Tynethys appeals to many collaborators. He released a project with Oakland duo Main Attrakionz. “I really fucked with these dudes. They came to Sacramento, and I showed up at their hotel room,” recalls Tyne, who arrived with a portable studio. Having opened for Kendrick Lamar, Raekwon and Evidence, it’s only a matter of time until Tynethys transports his sound around the globe.
