Southern California folk-reggae duo the Wheeland Brothers took to the balcony of the Tree House on a warm Spring night for a live acoustic performance of “Run River Run,” a single from their Muchos Mahalos album premiered today by Live For Live Music. Though Muchos Mahalos released in 2013, “Run River Run” holds a continued importance in the Wheeland Brothers’ hearts. “The more we’ve performed ‘Run River Run,’ it’s become a song that moves our imagination,” explains Travis Wheeland. “We wanted to create a version of the song that captures that energy, and maybe inspire a few people to wonder what’s out beyond their horizon. So we got a few friends and neighbors together on my balcony in San Clemente, California and filmed a live take of the song.” The duo of Nate “Frogg” Wheeland and Travis Wheeland are two Southern Californian brothers who grew up in Orange County surfing, scarfing down hole-in-the wall Mexican food, and jamming around bonfires. Their music has a sound which they describe as “beach rock reggae”; inspired by waves, hangin’ with friends, and dreaming of distant shores. “Run River Run” follows the release of the brothers’ Valentine’s Day single, “Surfer Girl,” available as a free download.

Travis Wheeland explains the origin and significa of “Run River Run,”: On a hot California summer day I setup a camping tent at the water’s edge at Crystal Cove State Beach. I was sitting alone with my guitar—I tend to make up songs to myself to think through whatever’s going on in my life. Catalina Island was on the horizon as I wrote ‘Run River Run.’ I was remembering the river that runs through the Kalalau Valley in Hawaii and straight into the ocean. You can be sunburned and salt encrusted, but the moment you sink into that river and let the cool glassy water pour over your face, it refreshes you to your core. When a moment stuns you and you see yourself—when you really arrive, like snapping out of the day-to-day hypnosis—you’ve got to pause and make a conscious decision to remember those moments. That river, the ‘Kalalau Stream’ is flowing as you read this. Heck you can look it up on Google Maps right now if you want. It’s a reminder that there’s magic happening in this world. It keeps carrying us to the ocean; it keeps us coming back, looking for magic.”

After touring the United States and Caribbean performing their unique flavor of beach rock and reggae music, the Wheeland Brothers have witnessed the fruits of taking risks in the name of being true to yourself. “The music of the Wheeland Brothers celebrates life on the coast, time spent with good friends, adventures on the road – all of life’s simple pleasures,” said AXS in an interview with Travis Wheeland. Garnering spins on Music Choice TV and an increasing amount radio play across the country, the SoCal duo are poised to inspire their audience with their unapologetically fun, universal appeal. Previous singles from the Wheeland Brothers, “Like You Do” and “Sand In My Sheets,” were respectively featured in Forever 21‘s Summer Collection promo and Hollister‘s Labor Day playlist. With a collection of music videos that have accumulated a couple hundred thousand views and two albums under their belt, “Run River Run” proves that the Wheeland Brothers can still bring the vibes with their live show.

Wheeland Brothers have several shows slated for this month, starting Reggae On the Block in Orlando this weekend, followed by Dartmouth College on May 21 and Cali Roots on May 29.

The Wheeland Brothers are two Southern Californian brothers who grew up in Orange County surfing, scarfing down hole-in-the wall Mexican food, and jamming around bonfires. Fast forward to 2014 and they have played Firefly, Wakarusa, High Sierra and Summer Camp Music Festivals, have supported national acts such as but not limited to 311, Bob Marley’s legendary band The Wailers and Slightly Stoopid, are currently being spun on radio stations nationwide in addition to music choice on TV and have received commercial syncs with Forever 21 and Hollister Co.
