Singing about modern romance with hooks and humor, ripmattblack is gaining traction with his genre-fluid pop. Today, Matt shares “All U Need,” his charming new music video. A minor-key, guitar-driven track produced by Take A Daytrip, the song finds Matt describing a tumultuous relationship with a woman who is looking for a level of commitment Matt isn’t quite ready for: “And I’m an open book, let me know if you need clarity/She got class tomorrow and she says I need therapy/Spending too much money to feel better apparently/Baby, I’ll do anything but she want a wedding ring.”
In the video, Matt dons a HAZMAT suit and Kobe Bryant jersey to brave the outdoors with his faithful dog Kurtis, searching for any connection he can during the months-long quarantine. Intercut with NSFW clips from an “All U Need” website, the video follows Matt as he risks his oxygen supply to chase Kurtis after he escapes. “All U Need” is the latest video from Happy Hour, the singer-songwriter’s debut EP.
ripmattblack explains the concept behind “All U Need”: “Basically I’m mesmerized by the ‘All U Need’ website (inspired by onlyfans) and all the people performing on there. One girl in particular, Puma with the blue hair, catches my attention over all the rest. Once I’ve been disconnected from oxygen, I begin tripping about all the various camgirls and long nights I’ve had on the site. The space man theme is something I plan to keep running with in the rest of my videos.”
Executive-produced by Take A Daytrip, the Happy Hour EP is a sunny and vibrant affair, propelled by Matt’s impish charm and detail-oriented accounts of modern love. Happy Hour bounces from bouncy guitar pop in recent single “Lilac,” harder-driving pop-punk in “Wonderland,“ to trap-oriented sounds on “Control.” The new EP boasts ell-received singles like “You Love It!,” which has over 500k streams across platforms, and “Sore Loser,” which racked up over 1 million streams on Spotify and 150k views on YouTube, and was included on Spotify’s Teardrop playlist (566k followers). Featuring an appearance from fellow Naples native Ben Chandler, Happy Hour EP is available everywhere via Alamo Records.
“From a creative perspective, I’ve really enjoyed quarantine, because it’s allowed me to tap in to my directing side, which I’ve always been interested in but never pursued fully,” says ripmattblack. “These two new videos, ‘Lilac’ and ‘All U Need,’ have really put me in the director’s chair. I’ve had creative input on my visuals in the past, but I’ve never had the chance to truly direct, so for that I’m pretty fortunate to do what we did with these two visuals.”
One of the leading lights of a rising Southwest Florida pop scene, along with his close friend Dominic Fike, Matt Black is a crafty songwriter, equally influenced by hip-hop and modern rock. Citing artists like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Lil Wayne, Lil Peep, and Blink 182 as inspirations, the 24-year-old artist started to gain traction with tracks like “Winnebago,“ featuring ALX Fike (Dominic’s brother), earning placements in publications like ELEVATOR and Lyrical Lemonade, who called “Sore Loser” “an intoxicating, pop-centric offering.” Now living and recording in Los Angeles, Matt is perfecting his genre-bending style as he looks to make his mark on the new decade.
