The EP:

“Hiero camp’s unspoken hero is back and in full effect,” pronounces Okayplayer in their premiere of Pep Love’s self-produced Dolla Daily EP. The EP is the follow-up to 2012’s Rigmarole LP and features Pep Love on the mic and on the mixing board, as he soothes listeners with the treatment of breezy West Coast jams. The Hieroglyphics Imperium / General Organic Sound release focuses itself on the daily grind of acquisition and the pursuit of happiness through physical pleasure topped with an allegory of spiritual enlightenment with Pep as both MC and producer. Dolla Daily features notable cuts including Slum Village’s “Get Dis Money,” The O’Jays’ “For The Love Of Money,” and Wu-Tang Clan’s “C.R.E.A.M.” The linguistically gifted rapper puts on a verbal assault on track like “Stargazin'” and “Bah Blacksheep.” The EP includes Hieroglyphics crew members Opio, on “Macaroni and Cheese,” and Tajai, who accompanies Pep on “Chilley Lime.”

Dolla Daily drops after a vigorous crusade of singles including “Monopoly Money,” which addresses the assumption that money is the root of all evil while questioning whether it is the currency itself or the power assigned to it. Again accompanied by Tajai, the rappers spit about society and its money spending problems, as Pep raps “Currency don’t worry me/ because i can’t bring it with me when they bury me.” The track debuted via HipHopWired and features a psychedelic guitar riff with boom bap production from Unjust. Earlier this summer, Pep shared the first single, “Evergreen,” via HipHopDX. With eloquent rhyming prose, Pep shows why he remains a staple of the Oakland collective. Heavy guitar stabs and precise rock drumming play the background, while the lyrically-proficient MC finds his pocket and shows why he’s built to last as one of the tallest pines in the hip-hop forest.

Hiero Imperium Records:

Founded in 1997 in Oakland, California, Hiero Imperium Records was founded by artists Del The Funky Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Domino, and the group Souls of Mischief, consisting of members A-Plus, Opio, Phesto and Tajai. After releasing albums on several major labels, the collective established their own independent Hieroglyphics Imperium label, website, and merch company in 1997, and are credited as creating the blueprint for independent rap labels. Few other rap collectives have withstood the test of time and are still considered as vibrant, respected, and talented as when they first stepped on the scene 20+ years ago. They are also credited as being one of the first hip hop groups to work with skate, snow, and surf companies . Created by Del the Funky Homosapien, their “third eye logo” is considered the third most recognized music logo according to Rolling Stone Magazine, and has been seen tattooed on dozens of fans all over the world.
