Video: Nevelle Viracocha – “DIRRTY GAME” (Prod. By Nikki D.)

Marrying Southern Rap with Intergalactic Production, Nevelle Carves His Own Lane with His “DIRRTY GAME” Video, Premiered by Viper Mag

12.8.2016

Critical Praise:

“If you’re making music like Nevelle Viracocha, you’re one step ahead of the game by making your fans feel the music hundreds of miles away.”Mass Appeal

As someone who has spent the larger part of the last decade searching for songs to spark my interest, you start to develop a sixth sense about artists — whether it’s a gift for melody, a particularly elastic cadence, or even the slightly lunatic stare that they offer the camera. Viracocha was one of those rappers that snapped you out of your sloth to be like, ‘who the fuck is this dude.” ‘”– Jeff Weiss, Passion of the Weiss

The Video:

Nevelle Viracocha’s Southern upbringing and worldly travels as an army brat has given him a unique global perspective on fitting in and standing up for what you believe in. In the video for “DIRRTY GAME,” Nevelle stalks a barren field in a military uniform, wearing a patch that reads “Coroner,” as he coaxes a picture out of an abandoned TV set with a sledgehammer. Premiered by Viper Mag, the visual for “DIRRTY GAME” is a powerful statement against the media’s normalization of hate and prison industrial complex. With swinging sparkling keys that sound like they were attached to the pendulum of a grandfather clock, “DIRRTY GAME is a spaced-out Southern rap slapper made in the style of Three 6 Mafia or Big K.R.I.T, about staying loyal in a dirty world. Premiered in September by Pigeons & Planes alongside a Q&A, “DIRRTY GAME” is a highlight from his recently released Eff/Pee/Ohh EP.

Explains Nevelle, “‘DIRRTY GAME’ was the last track we added to Eff/Pee/Ohh. I linked up with my friend Nikki D, she’s also from Alabama. She has almost… creepy melodies, she brings things into a dark place and I love it. It’s a very vibe track, I know there’s no hook but it’s great for sitting back and listening to. The television in the video is relevant because we’re in such a social era right now, and media plays a huge part in today’s society: from Donald Trump’s election to the mannequin challenge to Snapchat. The television represents media as a whole and the power and influence it represents today. The content playing on the TV is subliminal messaging, playing on the growing racial tensions after the presidential election. It’s a Nazi rally and old cartoons with racial stereotypes. When I smash the TV with a sledgehammer, it shows that I’m not the norm, and I won’t conform to the times that I live in and I’m tired of seeing certain things being promoted. I’ll break it before it breaks me.”

Born in North Carolina to military parents who were deployed all over the world, Nevelle moved around a lot. The son of two Southern-born parents, Nevelle most strongly identifies with the American South, especially the small Alabama town where he spent his pre-teen years. In addition to his formative years in Alabama and North Carolina, Nevelle spent ample time coming of age in glittering, metropolitan cities in Germany and South Korea. Praised by Passion of the Weiss, who called the album “highly recommended,” Eff/Pee/Oh is an introductory statement from the artist to the world, a mere sneak peak of his capabilities as an artist. Though he has not yet released much music, Nevelle Viracocha’s talent is undeniable.

Nevelle Viracocha Background

People often knock Southern hip-hop for being simplistic, overlooking the fact that the South possesses one of the most creative lineages ever in hip-hop—that of the space-age artist, started by the ATLiens of Outkast and continued through extraterrestrial Cadillactica with Big K.R.I.T from Mississippi . Whenever an artist emerges in that mold—able to sing, rap, and produce music in such a way that brings one back to that interstellar headspace—they’re worth paying attention to. Nevelle Viracocha has released two music videos and a handful of songs so far, but they’re enough to suggest he’s a powerful new talent with a story to tell.

Empire Background

EMPIRE was founded in 2010 as an artist-friendly, progressive digital distribution company. After early success, and identifying future icons such as Kendrick Lamar, Sage The Gemini, and Rich Homie Quan, EMPIRE was quickly regarded as a tastemaker in the industry and throughout the past five years evolved into a full-fledged record label, distributor and publisher for independent musicians. With the company and roster growing at a breakneck pace, EMPIRE has effectively disrupted a stale business model by bringing its energy, expertise, and acumen to its artists and labels.
