When Fenix Flexin was growing up in Los Angeles, he spent just as much time listening to The Smiths as Snoop & Dre. The Shoreline Mafia member taps into those as yet unexplored influences on his new single “Rubberz,” an 80s pop-influenced jam that has been taking the internet by storm. Riding a synth-heavy new wave bounce that evokes groups of the era like The Human League and Pet Shop Boys, courtesy of producer Purps of 808 Mafia, Fenix shows off his smooth singing voice, inflected with an exaggerated British accent to better express his yearning. Though the vocals channel Morrissey, the lyrics are pure L.A., directly addressing hangers-on who only call him when they need some cash: “Why do you call when you’re short on cash?/Can’t sleep through the night/I’m losing my mind tonight/Bankrolls on the table/Watching local cable/Hating that I’m able,” Fenix croons.

Teased by the artist earlier in the week, Fenix’s “Rubberz” has experienced a rapid viral rise, racking up millions of views and generating tens of thousands of creations across TikTok, Reels, and YT Shorts. Fenix’s posts of the song on Instagram drew positive attention from some of music’s biggest stars, including Tyler, The Creator, who said “so sickkkk kill them adlibs add some vocal pads very cool,” and other heavy-hitters like Chief Keef, 03 Greedo, E-40, Babychiefdoit, Baby Smoove, and many more. Fans have gone wild anticipating the song on TikTok, as fans create edits layering the music over footage of dancers at a club in the 80s and make up their own moves to the song’s signature bounce. Fenix spoke about the origins of the song while shopping at Holy Havens in San Diego, discussing how alternative music was his first love, even before he found hip-hop.

“Rubberz” continues a crazy year for Fenix Flexin, arriving in the wake of BIDNESS IS BOOMIN, the new EP by Shoreline Mafia. Created with his rap partner OHGEESY, the EP borrows from a different sphere of 80s sounds, taking cues from R&B, Electro-Funk, and Latin Freestyle, with lyrical and musical references to songs from that era. In particular, the duo leans into their Latino background, sampling beloved Freestyle hits by artists like Lisa Lisa & Cult Jam and Debbie Deb (on the urban radio hit “ROCKIN“). BIDNESS IS BOOMIN is home to Shoreline’s hit single “ROCKIN,” a speaker-knocking banger that samples Debbie Deb’s 1986 classic “Funky Little Beat.” “ROCKIN” hit big on urban radio, reaching the national Top 15, generated over 7.8 million YouTube views, and more than 36 million Spotify streams. BIDNESS IS BOOMIN continues Shoreline Mafia’s comeback run, which started with last year’s Back In Bidness album. The duo collaborated with hitmaking DJ Disco Lines for new single “Quickest Lines,” and a pack of remixes of their Platinum-selling hits “Nun Major,” “Musty,” and “Bands.” Beyond “Rubberz,” Fenix has kept active with featured verses, earlier this year making a guest spot on the unexpected rap debut by former child star Amanda Bynes. OHGEESY recently finished a spring tour, playing shows across the Southwest and California, and last weekend, making a guest appearance during BIA‘s set at Coachella.
