The Video:
If a spliff and a drink is his therapy, then rap is the antidote that keeps J.Lately grounded even at the edge of life’s precipice. Following last week’s release of his Let’s Just Be Friends album, the California rapper is sharing his “Breathe” visual, which finds J.Lately exhaling the tension and skepticism of a relationship gone sour in exchange for his own serenity and self-satisfying solitude. “Breathe,” which features fellow Bay Area native Shark Sinatra, was debuted by Sunset in the Rearview, who said “J.Lately vents about the frustrations in his life, showcasing his skillful flow and sharp lyricism.”
J.Lately’s Let’s Just Be Friends album, which in addition to Shark Sinatra includes collaborations with Tanya Morgan’s Von Pea, Bambu, Champluther Vandross, and Della, is the rapper’s most personal release to date. “I went into this album trying to write songs that were less about being a rapper or a dreamer and more about just being a human,” J.Lately explained. “I noticed that a lot of times we get ourselves into these negative co-dependent relationships where we allow ourselves to hurt each other, whereas if we could just learn to love ourselves a little more and treat each other better we could all just be friends.”
A relentless drive has kept J.Lately on tour across the country with artists such as Zion I, Locksmith, Los Rakas, Chuuwee, and Rey Res to name a few. Having recently concluded his 13-date headlining Bourne Madd Tour, the Bay Area MC is stepping into the forefront with Let’s Just Be Friends. On November 8th, J.Lately will be having the Let’s Just Be Friends release party at Stork Club in Oakland, and in December he kicks off an 18-date Winter Fresh Out West tour.

With no pretend marketing scheme or gimmick, J.Lately distinguishes himself with his classic style and laid back flow. A true appreciation for music, along with the unique ability to put everyday life into a relatable perspective has allowed him to flourish in the local Bay Area scene. “It’s not about rushing it” explains Lately, “it’s about quality music and progress.”
