Podcast: Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast 168
Bay Area’s latest and greatest rising star C-Money kicks off the new edition of the Audible Treats Hip-Hop Podcast with Cali’s next party anthem, “We Say.” The track is the latest single from the rapper’s newly released EP, Just 4 You. Set to a haunting synth melody and booming 808’s “We Say” is a day in the life of C-Money, Oakland’s unofficial mayor as he reps the major clubs in a night on the town. The single debuted via TheSmokingSection who state, “C-Money sounds like the latest ambassador for Oakland, bringing the city and region’s sound to other locales. Over a beat that even Mustard would envy, C-Money hips us to the norm of his area, with plenty of ‘hellas’ involved.” Following C-Money, is avant-garde singer/songwriter Marc E. Bassy with “Stick to Your Guns” from his mixtape, Only the Poets, Vol. 1, which dropped earlier this year. Marc E. Bassy released visuals for the track, which feature the singer walking 450 miles from his hometown of San Francisco to Los Angeles. Speaking on the lyrics Marc states that “I always walk. That’s when I write the most music and sort everything out,” adding that, “My music career has always been about believing in myself and disregarding what people might tell me or at times, what I tell myself,” reminding everyone to stick to your guns. Next up on the podcast is Jahzel with his new single “Faithful,” from his forthcoming album, The Wake Up, which is set to drop early next year. Debuting via HotNewHipHop, the track features a sample of DJ Rogers’ “Faithful to the End,” which was popularly sampled by Kanye West on Common’s “Faithful.” The lyrics are an ode to Jahzel’s hometown of Chicago rapping “Born and raised, I think back some days/ To that summer time watching Jordan play/ They were killin’, Him, Phil, and Pippen/ Whole city loved them, had six parades,” all while promising to remain faithful to his home, no matter where life takes him. Fourth on the list is the latest loosie from 15 year old prodigy, Chris Miles. “Topic of Discussion” debuted on TheSmokingSection and addresses the skepticism surrounding his rise to prominence. Miles uses the Selektah-produced beat to spit lines like “Thanks for the free promotion, I see that these people roasting me, but it’s easy to type words that don’t mean nothing,” proving that he is unfazed by any press heading his way. The podcast concludes with the latest release from acclaimed rapper/producer Lyrics Born, “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” from his forthcoming album, Real People, which is set to drop in 2015. The track is a cover of Gil Scott-Heron’s piece written nearly 45 years ago and features European funk band, An Apple A Day. In the midst of a modern revolution Lyrics Born has rewritten the lyrics, while maintaining the essence of Scott-Heron’s voice, to reflect the tragedies of Michael Brown, Trayvon Martin, Oscar Grant, and the unjust deaths of other young men in the wake of modern political revolution. Lyrics Born details the message in the SF Weekly premiere stating that “‘The Revolution’ should’ve been studied and revered as a musical timepiece, emblematic of a troubled period in American history ‘way back when.’ Yet here we are again… and again… and again.” This concludes the podcast for this week, stay tuned for future releases.
