“A very unique artist, you’ll want to tune in for 2014.” – Hypnotic Hippo
The Video:
Using patriotism as a metaphor for killing dreams, singer/songwriter Marc E. Bassy’s video “American Dream Life” gets right to heart of the matter: the American Dream is dead. Shot entirely in slow motion in muted colors, the video captures expressionless school children dutifully pledging to the American flag only to turn around and defiantly throw blazing copies of To Kill A Mocking Bird into the air, letting the ashes rain down on their small school desks. With the American Dream becoming less about the pursuit of personal growth and happiness and more about material and financial prosperity, Marc drives his point home with lyrics such as “I could sell it all away / Everyone here raised on cream / cash rules everything around me / That’s American scheme.”
With a tenacious ethic to get to the next level, Marc’s commitment to evolving his artistry knows no depth. The former 2AM Club member experienced a fair amount of success being signed to RCA, but abandoned it all to pursue a career as a solo singer/songwriter. In regards to the video’s anarchistic nature, Marc says, “I don’t think enough people are talking about what’s important or even attempting to start a conversation. The leaders of the new school should be putting each other up on what’s good for them; not materialism, violence, hatred, and addiction. I see too many people acting like nothing they do matters. What if they all valued their voice? What would they say then?”
“American Dream Life” is the latest visual from the Bay Area native’s debut EP Only The Poets. With easily digestable hooks and synthesized harmonies, Only The Poets straddles the line of mainstream radio with indy charm. In addition to receiving great looks by Billboard ,Complex, and SPIN, the EP has gained significant traction on Soundcloud with over 100k listens.
