The Posterz rocked 2015 with their heavy-hitting Junga EP, and today they’re continuing the momentum, sharing a powerful visual for “Ben Up” via Complex. Rapper Kris the $pirit stands front and center, laying down raw verses while Hu$$er jumps on the hook with Montreal/New York singer Kali Pop on vocals. “Ben Up” presents a grittier, darker sound from the trio, who have come up on top of life’s toughest situations. “Ben Up is Ghetto Rock,” The Posterz explain. “Kris the $pirit learned how to maneuver the Concrete Jungle, and is almost schooling the listener on how to survive in it. Kris’ verse was initially a freestyle about our lifestyle and how we were in a bad situation selling dope with a bunch people in the same predicament. Despite our hardships, we handle them the only way we know. Sometimes life doesn’t always give you the best people or circumstances, but we think above it and continue.”
The Posterz have been putting Montreal hip-hop on the map with their enticing sound and unmistakable personality. Their latest Junga EP showcased their eccentric musical style and cemented them as one of Canada’s most exciting acts. Complex dubbed The Posterz as the “pillars of the new wave of Montreal rap,” while Jeff Weiss named them “Best Rap Group” following the project release. With a series of strong releases like “Want It All” and the FADER-premiered “Bulalay,” the trio is here to make themselves heard. “The Posterz are an upstart Montreal crew currently exuding that combustible energy unique to unwieldy young rap groups,” Stereogum praised, adding, “they’re building something exciting out of them, something fresh. The beats are raw and retro but just polished enough to shine. In five short years and not much more than one EP worth of music, Montreal-based rap trio The Posterz have staked their claim in hip-hop both locally and globally with their refreshing, raw and innovative sound. They seemingly emerged fully formed, making their first splash with October 2013’s “The Bass Song,” a defiant anthem that came with an equally vibrant, self-directed video. The Starships and Dark Tints EP followed, as did love from the press: the trio were named in Huffington Post’s “Top 10 Artists to Follow” in 2014, and featured in numerous publications such as Noisey US/UK/France/Canada, Complex, Red Bull Music, Les InRocks, the Montreal Gazette, and more.
The group linked up in 2010, in a community center studio in Little Burgundy, a downtown Montreal neighborhood which birthed the city’s internationally renowned jazz scene a couple of generations earlier. Rappers Husser and Kris the $pirit stumbled on what Husser called “the best beat we ever heard in our lives” on the studio computer. They tracked down its creator; in producer Joey Sherrett, they found the third member of the group. The Posterz cite Kanye West, Andre 3000, Future and The Beatles among other influences, but are adamant about creating a sound that is all their own. Even in Montreal, they say their biggest inspirations are less musical and more aspirational; Montreal-born acts like Arcade Fire and Kaytranada made them realize they could blow up too. Huss and Kris temper their deft lyricism with a sense of humor. Sherrett’s beats mix adventurous, hard-knocking drums with masterful of low-end leads and expert synth work. Their JUNGA EP released on October 30th, 2015.
