Critical Praise for RETRO:

“…RETRO slips in clever asides too, like a sly reference to Rick Ross getting dropped from Reebok after his molly-all-in-her-champagne debacle.” – The FADER

“RETRO is coming out the gates strong.” – The Smoking Section

The edgy track combines some off the wall production with an unorthodox flow in carving out a total experience for new listeners seeking alternative hip hop freshness.” – Earmilk

“[We] can assure you that RETRO and the rest of the Rocket Team are gonna be the new faces of Hip-Hop.” – Fly Little Things

“RETRO and his crew definitely deliver.” – PotholesInMyBlog

The Video:

After coming off the release of his recent mixtape, The Six, RETRO, the 22-year-old, Atlanta-by-way-of-Detroit rapper, has released visuals for the projects fifth single, “Dangerous.” Premiering at stupidDOPE, the video shows the rapper boasting a red royalty jacket as he and his Rocket Team crew weather a money storm, in search of stardom as they run through Atlanta streets. With the lyrics, “n*gga we famous, dangerous, understand they gon’ know about us,” and “every day I’m a witness to violence / n*ggas be snitchin’ but we talk in silence,” the rapper showcases his hostile side juxtaposed with his charismatic charm, matched by producer Keezay’s foreboding production. Stupid Dope compliments the rappers dexterity on the song by stating, “the track finds Retro showing off his addictive and effortless appeal, creating something menacing, incredible, and quite contagious along the way,” and promises that, “you may not be familiar with the sounds of Retro, however today, he’s out to change all of that.”

In recent months, RETRO’s been invading the internet with a series of singles and videos leading up to the release of The Six, which premiered last week via DJ Booth. Significant buzz  for the 15-track project was created by RETRO’s carefully leaked singles from the mixtape, including the HotNewHipHop premiered track, “One Day,” featuring production by Taylor Gang affiliate RMB Justize and fellow Detroit native Coda. “One Day” followed the unveiling of his Tupac-inspired video “How U Want It,” which was filmed in Los Angeles and premiered at HipHopDX. Prior to that, RETRO released the jazzy single “1946,” which dropped via Potholes In My Blog, and the single “Resist,” which debuted at Earmilk.

“I feel like I can present good music, something you can cruise to, make love to, play with your kids to, because I believe a whole album should hit every season, whether it’s summer or winter,” says RETRO. His aim is to make the masses feel something meaningful through his work, from the cover art to the sound itself.  The Six will feature six different covers that can be opened up to form a poster for fans. He and his Rocket Team, a crew of 15-plus, came up with the idea of including uniquely coded tickets in each of the 5,000 copies that will be pressed, making the release an interactive experience. Listeners will be prompted to go to RETRO’s website, RETROthakid.com, to enter a code, and six winners will be rewarded with a special edition Rocket Team jersey. To receive your free hard-copy of The Six, simply follow Retro on Twitter (@RETROthakid) and tweet “retrothakid.com” with the hashtag, #TheSix.

The Background:

After moving to Atlanta from Detroit with his family at age 12, RETRO found a whole new host of melodies to fall in love with, from the work of Jermaine Dupri to the then-recently released OutKast LP, SpeakerBoxx/The Love Below. He found inspiration in a whole new sound. “I love Atlanta hip-hop to a certain extent,” he says, pausing. “I’d be lying if I said Atlanta didn’t help me become who I am.” The ability to flip between a Midwestern flair and the flashiness of Atlanta’s rap scene makes RETRO’s lane unparalleled, but beyond the music he has countless other goals that he and his Rocket Team, a crew of 15-plus, plan on executing.
