Flashing a unique vocal chemistry and an insatiable thirst for invention, Dublin natives Hare Squead are deeply dedicated to their craft. Delivering a lovestruck slice of electro-funk just in time for Valentine’s Day, Hare Squead shares “Baeboo,” their new single. At once nostalgic and futuristic, complete with gated snares and space-age synths, “Baeboo” finds Hare Squead vocalists Tony Konstone and Lilo Blues overcome by lust, ignoring the flaws of their significant others and plunging deeper into a dangerous attraction. Showing off the rhyming and singing talents of both emcees, “Baeboo” is the second standout single for Hare Squead in 2020, following the recent boom-bap clapback “Minor Gangsters (Gully).”
“Baeboo” arrives with an eye-catching lyric video, created by and starring Russian Instagram celebrity Anastasia Gorbatova. “I was so excited to hear this track before it came out,” says Gorbatova, “and I felt somehow it was about me, even though it’s not. I instantly learned it by heart and it’s like I’m in another world when I listen.”
Premiered in late January and listed on Spotify playlists like POLLEN and New Music Friday, “Minor Gangsters” claps back at racist UK politician Rory Stewart, who called Tony and Lilo “minor gangsters” during a man-on-the-street interview. The song flips the phrase and gives it a new power, as the duo proves there’s nothing “minor” about the way they handle their business. Along with “Baeboo,” “Minor Gangsters (Gully)” is a cornerstone of the duo’s upcoming Superweird EP
Hare Squead is currently preparing to embark the “Minor Gangsters Tour” in late February. A 5-show run that takes the duo across Western Europe, the “Minor Gangsters Tour” features stops in Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, London, and the duo’s hometown of Dublin, Ireland. Way beyond, across the pond, Hare Squead are quickly making a name for themselves. Hip-Hop and Ireland may seem like two points on opposite ends of the spectrum but the now-band of two, comprised of Tony Konstone and Lilo Blues, are imprinted within both worlds and look at themselves as more than just an anomaly. In 2016, the group found success outside of their local scene with “Long Way to Go” and took advantage of that by dropping their Supernormal EP. The standout single off the EP, “Herside Story,” quickly became a favorite, which led to Goldlink including a remix of the group’s song on his At What Cost album in 2017. Combined, “Herside Story” has amassed over 40 million streams on Spotify to-date. Also in 2017, the group released two acclaimed singles “Flowers” and “Pure,” which earned more than 5 million combined streams on Spotify alone. However, as success builds, unexpected turns can arise to derail everything. After an 18-month absence from the spotlight, in February 2019, Hare Squead made their return with “100 Miles,” a bubbly, guitar-driven single that was inspired by the emotional vulnerability of Aretha Franklin’s “I Say a Little Prayer.” The group plans to release two EPs in 2020 and re-introduce themselves to the world as a formidable talent.
