Critical Praise for Chippy Nonstop:

“Upon first listen, it might be easy to dismiss the internet-obsessed Nanda’s debut offering #GLOBALSCHOOLOFTWERK as frivolous hipster party rap. Upon closer inspection idiosyncrasies emerge: seething Hindi rhymes, crunchy dance beats, and a hyphy-inspired energy that help underscore Nanda’s unusual inspirations.” – FLAUNT Magazine

“She’s provocative, demanding of attention, while maintaining the casual-fun style of your old neighborhood crew. You can’t help but follow her bopping head and twerking booty for fear you might blink and miss the next step.” – San Francisco Bay Guardian

“The Oakland-based rapper Chippy Nonstop is incredibly easy to like and a surefire good time, but she’s far more than a pretty party girl with a great Twitter. She has great stamina and an ear for interesting sounds you can also bounce your butt to.”– Interview Magazine

The Song:

“Think a mischievous take on Girls’ Generation’s ‘Gee‘, or Grimes and Blood Diamonds’ exploration of K-pop tropes on ‘Phone Sex,'” describes Dazed & Confused, who premiered Chippy Nonstop‘s newest track. Coming off of her recent flirty release, “Peeka,” and the Dancehall, EDM hybrid, “Wata,” featuring Prince Zimboo, Chippy Nonstop shows no signs of slowing down with her Dazed and Confused premiere of her J-Pop inspired single, “ME + YOU,” featuring Kitty.

Demonstrating Chippy’s pop culture prowess, the track gives off immediate J-Pop vybz through bouncy, melodic synths, bubblegum pop lyrics, and even a double-time breakdown with a MIDI guitar solo a la Dance Dance Revolution. With the lines, “we can grab a burger and a milkshake at the drive through / catch a late night movie you can call me your boo” and “when I look into your eyes I see everything I like,” the track demonstrates the fusion of coy sexuality and childlike innocence typical of J-Pop/K-Pop culture. “I wrote this song about the more innocent parts of relationships. It’s an innocent love song about how we find love to be intriguing, genuine, and naive. Like J-Pop, it’s ironic because it’s actually a dark song that’s been camouflaged by brightly poppy aesthetics; it’s naughty concealed as sweet,” states Chippy.

Matched with producer Pat Lukin’s (SZA’s “Ice.Moon,”)  Sailor Moon-esque synth pop, the track is a perfect combination of Chippy’s eccentric style with pop culture. On looking back on the song’s J-Pop aesthetic, Chippy reflects, “Obviously I love all the main female J-Pop groups and artists; Perfume, Girls Generation, BoA, 2NE1, Ayumi Hamasaki, obviously Kyary Pamyu Pamyu is a huge influence stylistically and musically and has been for a while. I also borrowed Western influences for this song from SOPHIE and Anamanaguchi. The thing about J-Pop I really like is that it is ironic and there are hidden messages of darkness behind of the bright colors, which is pretty much how life really is.”

Born in Dubai to Indian parents, she grew up in Zambia and was granted Canadian citizenship before settling in Oakland and now Los Angeles. Her personal flair matches that of her music, combining dance, hip-hop, and world sounds to create an individualistic style which granted her opportunities to work with major artists such as Kreayshawn and Major Lazer, as well as Big Baby Ghandi and Main Attrakionz among others. The release of “ME + YOU,” “Wata,” and “Peeka,” is leading up to Chippy’s forthcoming untitled EP being released later this summer.
