The News:

Sir Michael Rocks is currently taking over Fashion Week at 1AM in Shibuya, Japan – the Times Square of Tokyo – and you can watch live via The FADER’s FADERSNAPS on SnapChat. On Friday, the Chicago-bred rapper whose fashion A$AP Rocky approves of released his released his Populair EP, the follow-up to last year’s Banco album. “You can almost hear a bit of Bone Thugs and Suga Free in his style,” said HYPETRAK of the Populair EP’s first single, “Pull Up.” On the Street Fighter-sampling second single “Perfect,” The A.V. Club noted the song “is fairly chippy and pixilated, it makes perfect sense that the accompanying video is video game-centric.” Rocks self-produced edgy tracks “In My Mode” and “Quality Time Lapse,” Aegyokiller contributes juke-inspired production to several stand-out tracks. In Japan for a month, Sir Michael Rocks is filming music videos and has linked up with Keith Ape, Mony Horse, and other artists.

Sir Michael Rocks has always been a little ahead of his time, a little more original than his peers, a little bit more creative. As a teenager, he started making music under the name Mikey Rocks as one half of groundbreaking duo The Cool Kids. Formed over the Internet and powered by a strong grassroots fanbase online, the group helped redefine the image of rap for the Internet era with an effortlessly cool throwback style and an iconic, laid-back fashion sense. Rechristening himself as Sir Michael Rocks in 2011, the restlessly creative artist, now based in Miami after time spent in Chicago and LA, has been pushing the boundaries of rap originality even further in recent years with a string of popular, critically acclaimed mixtapes. He released debut solo album, Banco, in 2014 and released his Populair EP on September 11th, 2015.
