Critical Praise for BKLYN1834:

“Brooklyn Communal Cool: The Brand” –  New York Times

“[they] make and beautiful, ethereal sounds. Their influences include Caribou and Talk Talk, and it’s easy to see why.” – EARMILK

The Video:

Today, artist collective BKLYN1834 shares the video from dream-pop duo NΔTIONS and Denitia, “Planned Out World,” debuted by Paste Magazine. Filmed in the Industry City neighborhood in Brooklyn during a snowstorm, the woozy, video follows Denitia (denitia and sene) as she floats in and out of abandoned streets and buildings. Over distorted guitars (and even a bit of bass clarinet that recorded in the bathroom!) lay Denitia’s sweet voice that float like a cloud above lyrics about having to stick to a “planned out schedule/job” more than one would want to especially when in a relationship. The track is from the recently released album, Comp_01.

“I wrote ‘Planned Out World’ a couple years ago, but it was all on guitar instead of synth based,” explains Nolan Thies, one half of NΔTIONS. “I always had the same melody, but the lyrics didn’t come until a year later. Those always fit the song better than overthinking lyrics in the end – all about whatever sounds best.” Explains Toby Pipes, NΔTIONS other half. “Denitia did a really great job on the vocals.  She has this amazing buttery voice that just sits like a cloud in a track, plus the harmony/Aahs she came up with in the chorus are great.”

“Aaronisnotcool came up with the video treatment,” Thies adds. “We told him we wanted it dark, with little story line and to mainly focus on Denitia, then he took it and ran from there. “Aaron has a great eye, and once he saw we weren’t afraid of effects or overlays he just went crazy,” Pipes points out. “He actually did this one before he did the ‘My Ways‘ video in China with Andrew.  Been very nice to have him help shape our image.”  NΔTIONS’ track “My Ways” was premiered by Earmilk earlier last month.

The Brooklyn collective BKLYN1834 released their first compilation album Comp_01 earlier this month via Billboard, with tracks from artists Saint Ballantine, Sanctuary Sound, NΔTIONS, ATR777, Bobby Only, and Foe Destroyer ranging from indie pop to electronic to folk.  Having housed over 50 artists since its inception, the “Clubhouse” as it’s often referred to, is based on the salon-like atmosphere of Hitsville U.S.A. in Detroit and Gertrude Stein’s home in Paris, where artists and creatives could live together in a nurturing, co-op style situation, bouncing ideas off each other and collaborating one another. Previous and current BKLYN1834 residents have worked with Prince, Taylor Swift, Toby Keith, Snarky Puppy, Theophilus London, Freddie Gibbs, Pharaohe Monch, among others and have worked directly with Converse, the iconic New York Times building, Pepsi, Apple, and more.

BKLYN1834 Background:

BKLYN1834 is a talent incubator for young artists who live together in a co-op style Victorian Home in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn and create music, art, videos, comedy, and other creative content. Modeled after the salon-like atmosphere of Hitsville U.S.A. and Gertrude Stein’s home, founding resident and creative director of BKLYN134, Andrew Thomas Reid, traveled to Nicaragua and Spain to convince friends to move into the house in the summer of 2009.

BKLYN1834 supports young artists by providing them with a place to live, write, record and produce content in a creative and collaborative environment. Previous and current BKLYN1834 residents have worked with Prince, Taylor Swift, Toby Keith, Snarky Puppy, Theophilus London, Freddie Gibbs, Pharaohe Monch, Denitia and Sene, among others. Fittingly nicknamed “The Clubhouse,” the community has housed over 50 residents since its inception.

BKLYN1834’s long-term goal is to create a network of similar clubhouses across the country and around the world. By continuing to produce digital content in-house, we want to create a global community where artists, fans, and brands can all engage.

With more and more brands recognizing the value of authentic grassroots ideas that appeal to 18-34 yr olds, BKLYN1834 has already been tapped for collaborations by Pepsi, Converse, Apple and Blackstone Realty. Forbes called BKLYN1834 “a tool every marketer should have in its back pocket.”
