Video: Manu Crook$ – “Assumptions”

The Australian Artist Brings the Trap Down Under in the Visual for This Zane Lowe-Approved Track, Premiered by High Snobiety

3.22.2017

Critical Praise for Manu Crook$:

“Although he has roots in Australia, his raw lyricism and seamless flow makes him sound like he comes from the south side of Atlanta.”The FADER

The Video:

Despite his barely perceptible accent and colorful slang, rising Aussie rapper Manu Crook$ elicits easy comparisons to Atlanta trap stars like Quavo or Young Thug. With a percussive flow, an intuitive ear for melody, and masterful use of Travis Scott/Kid Cudi-style vocal filters, Manu injects a distinctly Australian sensibility into a melting pot of dirty south sounds. Running roughshod over a chiming, aggressive trap instrumental, Manu shouts down his haters and gets hype on “Assumptions.” In the video, premiered today by High Snobiety, Manu kicks back with a video vixen and takes a tour of the lesser-known sights of New South Wales, including a bowling alley in Bellambi (1.5 hours south of Sydney). Originally premiered in December by Apple’s Beats 1 on Zane Lowe‘s radio show, “Assumptions” is an addictive, hooky, and versatile slice of turn-up and a formidable introduction to new American fans.

A leader in shifting the Down Under rap scene, Manu Crook$ is making all the right moves. Coming up on the scene with no promotion or label backing, Manu and his crew had to hustle to get noticed. Eventually, the hustle paid off, reaching the ears of Miracle, a popular Ghanaian-Australian producer. A friend of Manu’s through family connections and shared Ghanaian heritage, Miracle brought Manu to the studio to record his first batch of songs. Working with ace producer DOPAM!NE, Manu Crook$ honed his sound in his native land, attracting wider notice after releasing “Everyday,” a slow motion banger that received massive airplay on Triple J, Australia’s top radio station. Last October, Manu scored a FADER premiere and coverage from NOISEY for his video for Blowin’ Up,” which the FADER praised saying “It’s an effortlessly mellow collaboration,” which “highlights those nights where your energy doesn’t go down until the sun comes up.” Manu’s crossover potential and energetic performance led him to tour alongside Danny Brown and Denzel Curry, as well as UK grime artist, Lady Leshurr, and Korean viral sensation Keith Ape, making him one of the most sought after acts for international artists performing in Australia. After gaining even more global exposure courtesy of Zane Lowe and Beats 1, Manu is ready to make more worldwide waves in 2017.
