The Album:

A.Dd+, winners of the Dallas Observer Awards’ “Best Hip Hop /Rap Group” for the second year in a row, debut their new album DiveHiFlyLo: Every Man Is King today. Members Slim Gravy and Paris Pershun perfectly blend their Southern drawl with laid back, elevating sounds, creating an audio equivalent of cruising through Dallas streets in a candy-painted Cadillac. In DiveHiFlyLo, Slim and Paris P stay true to their trill Texas roots (“Audio Day Dream”, “…And Beyond”), while displaying great versatility and substance (“Can’t You See.”)

A.Dd+’s story begins in 2000 when Paris moved from Memphis into a North Dallas apartment complex also housed by Slim. After years of rhyming together, the pair decided to solidify their partnership in 2007, thus spawning A.Dd+. Pronounced “Aye-dee-dee,” with the plus sign silent, the name was derived from attention deficit disorder, the most ubiquitous of youth behavioral problems. “A.Dd+ is whatever you want it to be,” explains Slim, who is also known as “D.D.” “It has many meanings like A Dynamic Duo, Analog and Digital. The plus sign symbolizes us being beyond what others are on, always adding to the craft never subtracting. It’s all about imagination and creativity.”

Their video for “Audio Day Dream” provides a lucid dive into the minds of Slim and Paris P. Over a syrupy, screwed serenade sampled from xxyyxx’s “About You,” Slim and Paris lament the sting of life when overlying issues create deeper frustration. Paris explained his creative process as “one of those moments where I felt if I left or even moved then I would lose the groove I had for the verse. I wanted to paint the picture of how people grow apart. People do go through things that seemingly cant be fixed or rekindled. Relationships get ruined or grow stronger. It doesn’t always end in a fairy tale. Sometimes a group gets divided by ideas and creative differences or just life, period. Shit isn’t always shiny.”

Quirky yet streetwise, fun-loving yet dead serious, A.Dd+, the duo of Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy, may just be leading the city towards a rap renaissance.
