“If the work under her belt is any indicator, a staggering talent like Sudie’s could very well be mentioned one day in the same breath as some of North Texas’ most notable women in music.” – Dallas Observer News
“‘Heart Attack’ is the first taste of the 22-year-old’s sound that combines pop sensibilities with classical training and a dash of experimental DIYism.” – Indie Shuffle
“Her style fuses the ache of Jazz legends like Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday with the same eccentricity reminiscent of European artists Björk and Karin Dreijer Andersson.” – Saint Heron
“Sudie has been on my radar for some time now, and from the looks of things she’s garnering compliments from others as well with each drop.” – Artistic Manifesto
Merging classical training with a unique DIY recording process, Sudie is an artist who’s truly forging her own territory. The 23-year-old singer, songwriter and musician, describes her sound as “something jazzy meets kind of crazy… if Bjork had arranged something for Ella Fitzgerald or Billie Holiday to sing over.” It’s a sound she’s crafted all by herself, utilizing a pair of keyboards, a cheap microphone and a MacBook inside the confines of her tiny bathroom in Dallas, TX. Every true artist takes their own journey to finding their voice, and for Sudie that path took her from Texas to Dubai and back. Born in Florida, she moved all over the U.S. as a kid, including stops in Dallas and Atlanta, on account of her dad’s job as a pilot. The one constant was music. “Music has been a big part of my life ever since I was really small,” Sudie says. “I wrote my first song when I was five.”

While the Middle East financial capital is hardly known as a musical mecca, she credits her three years in the Emirate with developing her perspective as a performer and a person. “It was such an amazing experience—all of the different kinds of people there; it was insane,” she says. “The first week that school started, they had auditions for West Side Story, and I got the lead of the play. And ever since then I was totally involved in music. I was performing all around Dubai for the American Embassy, singing the US National Anthem at all these events where the Sheik was.”
Following three years of high school in Dubai, Sudie returned to Dallas to attend Southern Methodist University, where she was a vocal performance major with a concentration in classical music and opera. While the opera schooling helped hone her technical chops, she eventually felt the need for a broader focus. “I was going there really for the training,” Sudie says. “Eventually, I switched to a bachelor of arts in music with an emphasis on voice. I wanted to free up some of my time to work on my own music outside of the opera world.”
Meanwhile, recordings she’d made with a sound engineer friend in Dubai took on a life of their own, gaining radio play in the Middle East after they were remixed by a local producer. The unexpected success encouraged Sudie to pursue her own path as an artist in Dallas, where her current digs inspired her unique approach to recording. “It’s the best place in my apartment for acoustics,” Sudie says of her bathroom. “I live in kind of an old rickety apartment—there’s so many sounds that can be picked up through the mic. I have this ‘70s shaggy furry carpet that [pads] the bottom of the door. And since my bathroom is so tiny I just sit in the tub. I set my MacBook on the floor, bring the mic in the tub with me, and close my shower curtain. “
The result of that unusual process is a distinctive but accessible musical style which fuses confessional, personal lyrics with influences from across the musical spectrum. Her recordings, which include “Summertime” (the aforementioned track remixed in Dubai) and the dreamy “Asiasaurus,” have begun landing her on the radar of key players in the Dallas music scene. “She’s talented, she’s a very good singer, [and] she’s self sufficient— there’s so much room for her to go places,” says DJ Sober, founder of Dallas’ influential Big Bang party and one half of the production duo Booty Fade. For now, Sudie is content to be a one-woman show. Her upcoming debut EP, featuring her debut single “Heartattack,” is entirely self-produced, and performed entirely by Sudie herself. “In the future I’d be down to work in a studio,” Sudie says. “I just feel so comfortable here at home and in my tub. I am kind of a stickler when it comes to my music. I want to have complete control… This is me, this is everything, so take it or leave it. “ Sudie’s self-titled EP is slated to release April 2015.
