The South Florida Sensation Heads to Soulsville USA for a Raucous and Effects-Laden New Clip
XXL Class of 2018 Freshman
“Purpp has caught the ears of everyone from The Weeknd and D.R.A.M. to Chief Keef and Travis Scott, and the 19-year-old rapper is in position for a rapid ascent” – Pigeons & Planes
“If you’ve not been following along, the rise of young Miami rapper SmokePurrp – alongside that of his longtime pal and collaborator Lil Pump – has been one of the more exciting rides in rap’s underground this year” – Noisey
“Out of all the SoundCloud and Florida rappers that have gained floods of attention and acclaim in recent years, Smokepurpp has stood as one of the movement’s strongest proponents and artists.“ – HYPEBEAST
With an irrepressible, manic energy and an ear for lyrical witticisms, Smokepurpp‘s talent speaks for itself. Heading to the home of Stax Records to make some musical history of his own, Purpp mobs in Memphis in “Double,“ his latest video. Produced by Tony Seltzer, “Double” is a minimalist slapper, complete with warped cowbell, underwater synths, and cracking snares–a backdrop on which Purpp paints his sex-crazed bars: “I just want a side b*tch, I don’t want no drama (Drama)/I know that’s yo’ main b*tch, you can meet her mama.” In the video, Purpp takes over the block with Memphis’s teenaged sensation NLE Choppa, who menaces with breakneck bars and sing-songy cadences. Intercut with flashy camera effects and pasted-in cameos from famous figures, the duo gather a crew to storm a local eatery and show off their wild dance moves–even Obama gets down to Smokepurpp.
“Double” is the latest video from Purpp’s Lost Planet 2.0 EP, following the sci-fi influenced vid for the Kenny Beats-produced “Repeat” and the clip for the plaintive “Remember Me.” Featuring additional appearances from Gunna and Lil Pump, Lost Planet 2.0 streams everywhere via Alamo Records/Interscope.
One of the most popular rappers in South Florida’s cresting wave, Smokepurpp made his name on SoundCloud, building up a loyal following and earning millions of plays on each track. Signed to Alamo/Interscope, in a partnership with Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records, Smokepurpp drew mainstream recognition with the release of “Audi,” which earned hundreds of millions of streams on all platforms, including 124 million on Spotify, and earned a Gold certification from the RIAA.
