Treating his ever-growing legion of fans to a nonstop array of bangers, Smokepurpp is rap’s new Titan of Turn-Up. Taking over a bodega in the Big Apple, Smokepurpp shares “Sauce Like This,” a braggadocious, bite-sized banger. Applying a blunt-force cadence to apprehensive keys and buzzing bass, Purpp manages to squeeze an infectious hook, a quotable story into 97 seconds of high-energy trap: “When I used to go to school/Bitch, I never had a pencil/So I said ‘fuck school!’/Gave myself early dismissal.” In the video, premiered by Complex, Purpp and his homies buss down in the beverage aisle, amidst the 21-year-old rapper’s signature purple smoke. “Sauce Like This” is the latest release on the path to Deadstar 2, Purpp’s upcoming project, following “But I Still Respect Women,” which has over 1 million SoundCloud plays in less than two weeks.
One of the most popular rappers in South Florida’s cresting wave, Smokepurpp made his name on SoundCloud, building up a loyal following and earning millions of plays on each track. Signed to Alamo/Interscope, in a partnership with Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records, Smokepurpp drew mainstream recognition with the release of “Audi,” which earned hundreds of millions of streams on all platforms, including 111 million on Spotify, and earned a Gold certification from the RIAA, and his debut mixtape Deadstar, which peaked at #42 on the Billboard 200. Earlier this year, Smokepurpp made another splash with “Nephew,” featuring fellow Floridian Lil Pump, which has over 54 million Spotify streams, shared Bless Yo Trap, a full-length collaboration with producer Murda Beatz, and earned a spot on XXL’s 2018 Freshman List.
