Video: Slim Thug – “King”
Slim Thug Shows Us How to Lead a Boss Life in the Hogg Life 4 Video, Premiered by Vibe
08.22.2016
The Song:
Texas rap kingpin Slim Thug pontificates from his throne in the video for “King,” the somber mission statement for Slim Thug’s Hogg Life 4: American King. On “King,” Thug reflects on his past life as a hustler struggling to survive on the streets, understanding that he made it out of that life due to hard work, dedication and street smarts, and imparting his learned wisdom on young hustlers. In the video, premiered today by Vibe, Slim Thug takes the viewer on a Boss tour of Houston, stopping at the gym, the barbershop, the block, a luxury hotel, and even a literal throne, where Thug delivers his wise pronouncements from on high. On “King,” Slim Thug offers himself as a role model for responsible living for a retired gangsta. As the owner of BossLife Clothing and Boss Life Construction, which helps to build homes for people with low credit scores, and as someone who regularly throws toy drives and turkey giveaways in Houston, Slim Thug leads by example.
Featuring two appearances from Boosie Badazz, as well as contributions from X.O., and Nikki Lactson,American King is a fine example of grown man rap, showcasing an accomplished man in a life of comfort, reckoning with his past demons and celebrating the choices he made to make it to this position. Prior to the album’s release, Slim Thug released “Peaceful,” a melodic, guitar-led rumination on his rarified position in the hood, and the anti-police brutality condemnation “IDKY,” which he released in response to the murders of Philando Castile and Alton Sterling. Recently featured in a Noisey profile, Slim Thug is proof that you can make it out of the hood in one piece.
Slim Thug was recently in New York and did several interviews. Listen to them here:

Slim Thug Background
Slim Thug is a leading voice in Houston rap, dominating the game since the mid-’00s. Born Stayve Thomas, Slim Thug earned the nickname Boss Hogg in high school from driving around a boxframe Cadillac. Slim Thug earned his break as a rapper when he freestyled in front of legendary Houston DJ Michael Watts, who helped him move thousands of mixtape CDs out of the trunk of his car. Featured alongside Paul Wall on Mike Jones‘ seminal single “Still Tippin’,” Thug became one of the brightest stars in Hip-Hop with his 2005 Neptunes-produced album Already Platinum, which featured hit songs such as “Like a Boss.“ Slim Thug earned a number one Billboard hit when he collaborated with Beyoncé on “Check On It” in 2006. Slim Thug continued his momentum with 2009’s Boss of All Bosses, which debuted at number 15 on the Billboard charts. Slim Thug released the first three volumes of the Hogg Life series of albums in 2015, cementing his role as a premier elder statesman in Houston and a mentor to young Houston rappers such as Sosamann, Beatking, and Sauce Twinz. The latest volume, Hogg Life Volume 4: American King, releases via EMPIRE on August 4th and is currently available for pre-order.
Empire Background
EMPIRE was founded in 2010 as an artist-friendly, progressive digital distribution company. After early success, and identifying future icons such as Kendrick Lamar, Sage The Gemini, and Rich Homie Quan, EMPIRE was quickly regarded as a tastemaker in the industry and throughout the past five years evolved into a full-fledged record label, distributor and publisher for independent musicians. With the company and roster growing at a breakneck pace, EMPIRE has effectively disrupted a stale business model by bringing its energy, expertise, and acumen to its artists and labels.
