Album: Sir Michael Rocks – Populair

The Fashion Forward, Nature-Loving Chicago Rapper/Producer Delivers a Lively, Personal EP, Debuted by Complex

Critical Praise for Sir Michael Rocks:

“Sir Michael Rocks is a pretty damn adventurous dude.” – Noisey

“Needless to say, dude’s a visionary.” – XXL

“Sir Michael Rocks is ready to take over.” – Complex

“Rocks is a solo artist looking to make good on a promise of stardom.” – The FADER

“He’s Mikey, he, he, he rocks. Yes he does.” – Pigeons and Planes

The Album:

Sir Michael Rocks is something of an enigma in the hip-hop community. His sense of fashion, which drew the attention of A$AP Rocky in a Complex TV feature, ranges from a Kimono and drop crotch pants to the Gucci Mane-meets-Pokemon clothing designs of his own Exotic Gourmet line. A former member of the cult rap duo The Cool Kids, the Chicago emcee has a long-standing obsession with nature, from protesting at the Miami Seaquarium to teasing his fans with his own National Geographic show. As for his visuals, the lead single from the Populair EP, “Perfect,” which debuted via The A.V. Club, finds the rapper battling himself in a pixelated Street Fighter video game.

Premiered by Complex, the Populair EP, which officially releases Friday, Sept. 11th, is the followup to last year’s Banco. Whereas Banco featured guest artists Mac Miller, Twista, and Iamsu!, the more personal and retrospective Populair features no guests. The Chicago roots are evident, particularly on the footwork-inspired, Aegyokiller-produced “Come Outside” and “L.M.B.,” and the project’s closing song, “Alone,” is possibly Rocks’ most personal song to date as he reflects on a break-ups and variety of other topics that’ve left him lonely. Together Banco and the Populair EP create Banco Populair, a reference to the Spanish financial institution of the same name.

Sir Michael Rocks Background:

Sir Michael Rocks has always been a little ahead of his time, a little more original than his peers, a little bit more creative. As a teenager, he started making music under the name Mikey Rocks as one half of groundbreaking duo The Cool Kids. Formed over the Internet and powered by a strong grassroots fanbase online, the group helped redefine the image of rap for the Internet era with an effortlessly cool throwback style and an iconic, laid-back fashion sense. Rechristening himself as Sir Michael Rocks in 2011, the restlessly creative artist, now based in Miami after time spent in Chicago and LA, has been pushing the boundaries of rap originality even further in recent years with a string of popular, critically acclaimed mixtapes. His debut solo album, Banco, released in 2014.
