The Song:

A founding father of the New York drill that has been the defining sound of the city for nearly a decade, Brooklyn native Rowdy Rebel’s roots remain inseparable from the scene. Paying homage to the late Canarsie rapper and “Woo Walk” dance pioneer, TDott Woo, Rowdy shares his new single, “RIP TDOTT.” Over flurrying bells and booming bass, the track finds Rowdy reflecting on his own coming-of-age experience in the unforgiving concrete jungle: “Sh*t, when I was broke, I had to figure it out/Get a job, hustle, or scam, I had to consider a route/My pops was raising a man, I couldn’t just sit on the couch/By the time I hit 13, I knew how to bag up an ounce.”

A mythical presence in the New York scene for nearly a decade, Rowdy Rebel’s super-charged, energetic style of rap never fails to live up to his name. After bursting onto the scene in 2014 with his Bobby Shmurda-assisted breakout hit, “Computers,” which Rolling Stone ranked #94 on their list of “The 100 Best East Coast Hip-Hop Songs of All Time,” Rowdy released his first solo mixtape, Remain Silent, in 2015, followed by 2016’s Shmoney Keeps Calling, with appearances from Lil DurkA$AP FergRich The Kid, and many more.

Last summer, Rowdy made a full return to music with Rebel vs. Rowdy, his first full-length effort in half a decade, which featured guest verses from A Boogie Wit da HoodieFivio ForeignFrench Montana and more. The 17-track Rebel vs. Rowdy arrived on the heels of Rowdy’s high-profile guest appearance on Pop Smoke’s “Make It Rain.” Late last year, Rowdy blessed stages alongside fellow Brooklynite Bobby Shmurda on “The Bodmon Tour.” In April, Rowdy released Splash Brothers, his joint project with Fetty Luciano, featuring recent singles like “We On It” featuring DBoyLo, and “Whamm.” Most recently, Rowdy released the video for “Posture,” his latest collaboration with Fetty Luciano and Fivio Foreign.

Now signed to GoodTalk, Rowdy Rebel hopes to expand his kingdom in the Five Boroughs and beyond. Stay tuned for much more from the Brooklyn native as the summer progresses!

The Background:

Closely affiliated with Bobby Shmurda and the GS9 crew, Brooklyn rapper Rowdy Rebel’s style is characterized by intensity and high-energy bars. After an especially active phase between 2014 and 2016, he returned in 2020 with an appearance on a Pop Smoke track and then was back the next year with a new single of his own, “Jesse Owens” featuring NAV. Born Chad Marshall in Brooklyn, New York, Rowdy Rebel took his childhood nickname of “Rowdy” and made it his moniker when he joined his East Flatbush friends and formed GS9. When member Bobby Shmurda signed a deal with Epic Records in 2014, Rowdy signed two months later. He appeared alongside Chris Brown, Busta Rhymes, Yo Gotti, and others on the remix of Shmurda’s 2014 hit “Hot N****.” That same year, Rebel dropped his debut single, “Beam Jawn,” then “Computers” featuring Shmurda landed at the end of the year. Shmurda also appeared on Rebel’s 2015 single “She’s All About That Shmoney,” which also featured veteran rapper Too $hort. His first solo mixtape, Remain Silent, appeared in 2015, and he followed it in 2016 with Shmoney Keeps Calling, a guest star-heavy affair that included spots from several of the GS9 crew as well as Rich the Kid, A$AP Ferg, and many others.
