He built a sizable fanbase in Los Angeles with his sing-song flow, impossibly hard mixtapes, and prolific array of riders’ anthems–now, RJMrLA is ready to show you the man behind the curtain. Today, the L.A. rapper shares On God, his long-awaited debut album. Fine-tuning the rhythmic urgency, unshakeable flow, and facility with earworm hooks evident in his previous work, On God uses its 20 tracks to examine every aspect of RJ’s life, from the chaotic pursuit of stardom in “Rat Race,” to his desire to freeze time to spend more time with his family on “Time,” to his need to find a moment’s peace in “Bang My Line,” to his humble origins on the thrilling “Apartment.” The new album is RJ’s most sonically varied to date, keeping a firm foundation in the snapping snares and melodic bass of the new Los Angeles sound, but incorporating Southern touches like reverbed guitars, and acknowledging his city’s history with glistening pianos and synth strings reminiscent of prime-era DJ Quik.

“The phrase ‘on God’ has been used in urban society an ample amount of times as somewhat of a promise or basically giving your word that your statement is true,” RJ told Complex upon announcing the project in June. “So instead of saying ‘I swear to God’ we’re saying I put my word ‘on God.’”

His official debut album after several successful mixtapes, including his popular OMMIO (On My Momma I’m On) series and 2017’s Pitchfork-praised The Ghetto, a collaboration with Mustard, On God is a mature effort from RJ, forgoing party anthems for heavier thematic content, but still bringing enough energy and head-nodding moments to make an ideal listen for riding your vert down PCH. Featuring appearances from Young Thug, Schoolboy Q, Snoop Dogg, Mozzy, Rich the Kid, G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, The Game, and OT Genasis, among others, and production from production from DJ Swish (who’s made hits for YG and Post Malone) and more, On God releases via EMPIRE.

The Background:

Firmly rooted in the Los Angeles community, RJMrLA is intimately familiar with the hustle. Born and raised in South Central, RJ’s father was a businessman with ties to the Westside Pirus and his grandfather a bootlegger, exposing a young RJ to the grind early on. At the age of nine, RJ began channeling his surroundings into raps after his mother put him on to Snoop Dogg. Moving to Atlanta post-high school, RJ became deeply embedded in the city’s trap culture. Upon his return to Los Angeles in 2013, RJ caught the attention of DJ Mustard, receiving an invitation to join his 10 Summers crew. RJ appeared on several tracks on DJ Mustard’s 10 Summers mixtape series and launched his solo career with the OMMIO (On My Mama I’m On) mixtape series, garnering critical acclaim from the FADER, LA Weekly, XXL, and more. Collaborating with the likes of The Game, Nipsey Hussle, Jeezy, and Ty Dolla $ign, RJ has painted name across the rap game. With his 2017 projects MrLA and The Ghetto, his full-length collaboration with DJ Mustard, RJ is making moves to place himself in the ranks of LA’s finest.
