Album: Ripp Flamez – DayOne Forever
Named “Best New Artist” at the 2015 Ohio Hip Hop Awards, The Promising Cleveland Rapper Shows Growth on New Release
07.11.2016
The Album:
Flawlessly balancing crooning vocals and combat-ready lyrics, Ripp Flamez radiates coolness and dexterity on DayOne Forever, premiered today by HipHopDX. As the scrappy city of Cleveland basks in the glow of NBA Championship glory, Ripp Flamez also proves his drive, honing his sound and showcasing his progression with both songwriting and beat selection. Ripp draws attention to his melodic delivery on the 10-track project, keeping guest appearances to a minimum. His self-possession is most clear on songs such as “Shine Light,” where he raps, “Should I just premeditate on my own / Sometimes I feel like I can’t do no wrong.” Other standout tracks include the aptly titled “LeBron Flamez,” triumphant single “PayBack,” and the smooth, auto-tune heavy “Break the Bank.” Ripp Flamez recruits Mitch Mula, ClockworkMuzik, Givtyd for the entirety of the tape’s production, ranging from haunting synths to reversed piano loops on the closing track.
Explaining what he wants people to take away from the project, Ripp Flamez says, “I just want my fans to realize the genuineness of my lyrics and know that these are my negatives turned into art. Since the last project, I’m in a more mature but clearer space.”
Ripp Flamez is Cleveland’s formidable entry into the Bryson Tiller/PartyNextDoor school of Rap&B, earning over 262,000 Soundcloud plays on single “Wavez,” which is featured in Spotify‘s Most Necessary playlist. Leading up to the release of DayOne Forever, the Wave God dropped “Your Way,” a romantic, for-the-ladies ballad with twinkling piano, plaintive electric guitar, and finger snaps via G Styles. “Your Way” followed The FADER‘s premiere of the menacing and dramatic “Shine Light,” as well as “LeBron Flamez,” which debuted via Complex and celebrated the Cleveland Cavaliers’ playoff run prior to their championship victory. In 2014, Ripp Flamez released DayOne, which took off in Cleveland behind the success of “Morning After,” his single with P The Artist. “Some artists may have content and substance and others may just have melodies, rhythm, and good production,” Ripp Flamez says. “I have both, along with a unique voice and an organic fan base.”
Born in the Garden Valley Projects, one of Cleveland’s roughest areas, Ripp Flamez found himself alone after his father died and his brother got locked up. Flamez channels his struggle and brings his experience to life through his rhymes. “There’s a lot of different talent in the city with a lot of genuine support,” explains Ripp Flamez. “I found my sound in the midst of all that; so did Kid Cudi and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, two of the artists I look up to most… It’s a tough city and you have to earn your support, you have to show what you really about.” Named “Best New Artist” at the 2015 Ohio Hip-Hop Awards, Ripp Flamez is bringing his infectious melodicism and confessional lyrics to a national audience with DayOne Forever.
