The Video:
Cleveland artist Ripp Flamez places the spotlight on himself with his menacing “Shine Light” video, premiered by The FADER. Releasing on the heels of his hometown Cavaliers winning the NBA Finals, “Shine Light” is a trap banger that precedes the rapper/singer’s forthcoming album, DayOne Forever, which is slated to release in July. The visual continues a storyline that began with the “PayBack” video, Ripp Flamez explains: “From the beginning of the ‘PayBack’ video I’ve been on a mission to obtain something that originally belonged to me, looking for a certain person who represents every person I’ve felt robbed me of something, I find him, take him to a place where I plan to kill him only to realize they only exist if I allow them to, and he vanishes.”
Devoted to his city, Ripp Flamez previously shared “LeBron Flamez,” which debuted via Complex and celebrated the Cavs’ playoff run. The booming single followed the WorldStarHipHop-premiered video for “Wavez,” which is featured in Spotify‘s popular Most Necessary playlist. In 2014, Ripp Flamez released DayOne, which took off in Cleveland behind the success of “Morning After,” his single with P The Artist. “Some artists may have content and substance and others may just have melodies, rhythm, and good production,” Ripp Flamez says. “I have both, along with a unique voice and an organic fan base.”
Born in the Garden Valley Projects, one of Cleveland’s roughest areas, Ripp Flamez found himself alone after his father died and his brother got locked up. Flamez channels his struggle and brings his experience to life through his rhymes. “The Cleveland music scene is kind of like everything else here, you always come so close, but never actually make it,” he says. “There’s a lot of different talent in the city, with a lot of genuine support. I found my sound in the midst of all that; so did Kid Cudi and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, two of the artists I look up to most… It’s a tough city and you have to earn your support, you have to show what you really about.” Named Best New Artist in the 2015 Ohio Hip-Hop Awards, Ripp Flamez is bringing his infectious melodicism and confessional lyrics to a national audience with DayOne Forever.
