Critical Praise for RETRO:

“…RETRO slips in clever asides too, like a sly reference to Rick Ross getting dropped from Reebok after his molly-all-in-her-champagne debacle.” – The FADER

“RETRO is coming out the gates strong.”The Smoking Section

The edgy track combines some off the wall production with an unorthodox flow in carving out a total experience for new listeners seeking alternative hip hop freshness.” – Earmilk

“[We] can assure you that RETRO and the rest of the Rocket Team are gonna be the new faces of Hip-Hop.” – Fly Little Things

“RETRO and his crew definitely deliver.”PotholesInMyBlog

The Song:

One day away from the release of his The Six mixtape, RETRO shares the latest single, “One Day,” premiering at HotNewHipHop. Produced by Taylor Gang’s RMB Justize, the Atlanta-by-way-of-Detroit rapper enlists fellow Detroit native Coda, for an opening verse over the track. “One day, Ima look down at this world like I made it to the top,” sings the song’s chorus, which sets the reflective tone of the track, as the MC’s rhyme over the trap-induced production full of rolling hi-hats and 808 kick drums. HotNewHipHop compliments RETRO for having a “smooth and versatile flow” on the song. “I’m just puttin’ on for them n*ggas in my area,” raps RETRO, adding, “Detroit n*gga but I f*ck around with A-Town.”

Inspired by hometown heroes from Detroit’s J Dilla to ATL’s OutKast, and undeniable talents like Michael Jackson and Erykah Badu, RETRO implements a variety of musical influences and eccentricities into his own unique style, which was able to get him on a multi-city tour with Rich Homie Quan and Riff Raff earlier this year. Expressing his love and gratitude for the opportunity, he confidently says “I’ve learned that performing is my favorite part about the music. I’ve seen crowds of thousands and thousands of people, but I don’t get nervous. I was born for this.”

In recent months, RETRO’s been invading the internet with a series of singles and videos leading up to tomorrow’s release of The Six, premiering at DJ Booth. “One Day” follows last week’s unveiling of his Tupac-inspired video “How U Want It,” which was filmed in Los Angeles and premiered at HipHopDX. Prior to that, RETRO released the jazzy single “1946,” which dropped via Potholes In My Blogand was blessed with Hennessy in his video for “Resist, which debuted at The Smoking Section.

The Background:

After moving to Atlanta from Detroit with his family at age 12, RETRO found a whole new host of melodies to fall in love with, from the work of Jermaine Dupri to the then-recently released OutKast LP, SpeakerBoxx/The Love Below. He found inspiration in a whole new sound. “I love Atlanta hip-hop to a certain extent,” he says, pausing. “I’d be lying if I said Atlanta didn’t help me become who I am.” The ability to flip between a Midwestern flair and the flashiness of Atlanta’s rap scene makes RETRO’s lane unparalleled, but beyond the music he has countless other goals that he and his Rocket Team, a crew of 15-plus, plan on executing. His forthcoming mixtape, The Six, is due this August.
