The Video:

Taleban Dooda captivates with his elastic melodies and pure, piercing tenor. With his new video single “No Eater,” Dooda demonstrates the fluid and playful cadences that have him rapidly rising in Florida and beyond. Bouncing atop a dancing guitar lick courtesy of producers Ayo Bleu (Lil Durk, NBA YoungBoy), MalikOTB (Rod Wave, Lil Durk), and Monique Winning (NLE Choppa, Jackboy), Taleban embraces his womanizing ways, but assures the opps that his luck with the ladies does not make him soft.

In the video, directed by Jolo, Dooda hosts a wild pool party, welcoming his homies and a bevy of baddies for an R-Rated afternoon. Released as Dooda celebrates a Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl, “No Eater” follows the recent T9ine collab “Chosen,” a gospel-influenced anthem that earned praise from Pitchfork and HipHopDX (who named the song one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2021 So Far) and already has over 1 million streams across platforms. “No Eater” is available on all platforms via Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records.

Though Taleban Dooda only started rapping at the age of 15, the Tampa, FL native displayed a natural melodic ability that helps him stand out in a burgeoning Florida street rap scene. After working hard behind the scenes to build a backlog of bangers and gain inroads in his home state, Dooda scored a hit with “Tru Colors,” his first-ever release, racking up over 3 million streams, generating over 1.2 million views on its YouTube video, and reaching #18 on SoundCloud’s worldwide New & Hot chart. The Background:

Taleban Dooda always had a voice–a combination of distinctly Floridian style and irresistibly catchy melody, has made the 18-year-old rapper one of the most exciting new rap voices coming out of the South. Hailing from East Tampa, Dooda had few options to avoid the violence that lurked outside his door. When he injured his knee in his 9th grade year, ending his football dreams, Dooda turned his attention to music. He began by recording himself covering other people’s songs — inspired by his love for artists like Bruno Mars, John Legend, and Sam Smith — before moving on to his own original compositions. Influenced by artists like NBA Youngboy, Polo G, and NoCap, Taleban Dooda decided to become a rapper.

For Dooda, 2020 was all about consistency, as he continued to drop a steady stream of strong singles throughout the year. In September, he released “Dis Dooda” — which VICE named one of the best songs of the month and Lyrical Lemonade highlighted on their site — and followed that up in November with the TM88 and ATL Jacob-produced “Finish Him.” Now, Dooda has his eyes set on the upcoming release of his debut album. With all this momentum, and all of Florida behind him, he doesn’t plan to slow down any time soon. “I’m just trying to keep dropping music,” he says. “I ain’t trying to take no breaks.”

This Valentine’s Day, superstar singer Justin Bieber teamed up with TikTok for “Journals live from the drew house,” a full-length LIVE performance. TikTok’s first-ever full-length single-artist LIVE performance, #JournalsLive was a massive success, drawing over 4 million unique views over two broadcasts, making it the most-viewed single-artist livestream in TikTok history!

“Journals Live from the drew house” was a special moment for TikTok, but also for Justin, as it marked his first-ever performance of songs from his fan-favorite 2013 album JOURNALS. The buzz surrounding the Valentine’s Day performance caused a resurgence in the popularity of the album, ushering JOURNALS past the 3 billion all-time streams landmark. The News:

TikTok is a place where superstars of the past and present rub shoulders with emerging artists and the internet’s wildest memes. It seems as if that kind of variety should cause whiplash, but in the context of TikTok, these disparate artists and musical styles make a certain kind of sense. The platform’s emphasis on authentic creative expression ensures that each creator will bring a unique twist to a song or trend. Check out some of the songs, trends, and artists TikTok is vibing with at the moment:

Rap/R&B maestro T-Pain has made himself at home on TikTok, populating his page with highlights from his illustrious career. Earlier this year, T-Pain had a minor viral moment, when a clip of him and Slim Jxmmy of Rae Sremmurd live reacting to the song “Feet Pic” by MrSunChips racked up over 2 million views. T-Pain is going viral once again on the app this week with his 2014 DJ Mustard-produced banger “Up Down (Do This All Day).“ Powered by a dance created by @itsromebaby (which T-Pain acknowledged on his own page), “Up Down” is one of the top trending songs on the app, with over 380k video creations.
Rapper King Von tragically passed away in November, but he left behind a legion of loyal fans. The Chicago native was known for his gripping storytelling , and now a particularly dramatic moment in his song “Twin Nem” ft. Lil Durk is a trending sound on TikTok. The rhythmic grunts and call-and-response between Von & Durk provides a perfect prompt for sketch comedy, useful for anyone who’s too busy vibing to worry about being embarrassed. With over 115k video creations, “Twin Nem” has been used to soundtrack overzealous cousins at a family reunion, Andy’s toys coming to life in Toy Story, and the relatable moment when you forget you’ve muted yourself on video chat.
Plenty of TikTok users were feeling the love during Valentine’s Day week, as songs like The Fray’s “How To Save A Life” and Edith Whiskers’ cover of Edward Sharpe’s “Home” each earning an uptick in video creations. While the happily attached TikTok users chose a variety of songs to express their love, the single and unsentimental users decided on a single anthem–“F*cc Valentines” by Honcho Moonk. With over 298k video creations, many of which from the past week, “F*cc Valentines” allowed the anti-V-Day contingent to send a forceful and angry message, whether they were taking their anger out at the Valentine’s section of a store, bemoaning the deluge of lovey-dovey social media posts, or, like Oneya from @angryreactions, just feeling the anti-love vibes.
Combining glitchy electronic sounds and manipulated vocals with pop-friendly choruses, the nascent genre of hyperpop is rapidly growing in popularity on TikTok. 16-year-old artist ElyOtto’s appropriately-titled song “SugarCrash” is the latest hyperpop banger tearing up TikTok. Anticipated ever since ElyOtto shared a snippet in August, “SugarCrash” has more than 35k video creations on TikTok, partially inspired by an editing trend that juxtaposes the bright sonics of the song with a scary or awkward moment, or highlights a strange scene from an anim e. The song’s TikTok success is reverberating in the real world–”SugarCrash” has over 10 million streams on Spotify, and recently reached the #1 spot on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
TikTok is often a channel for expressing joy, but sometimes, you just need to scream your head off. Rising British club music star Shygirl’s song “UCKERS” (62k video creations) is the perfect soundtrack for that catharsis. At the start of the song, a series of blood-curdling screams give way to a syncopated beat, and TikTok users have used that transition to explore the benefits of healthy eating, show off creative Zoom still images, or to document a transformation of appearance.
Amidst all the bizarre trends and superstar stories that populate TikTok, the platform’s bread and butter is still providing a platform for emerging artists to find their audience. One such rising star is Leyla Blue, a singer-songwriter from New York City. When she created her TikTok account in November, Leyla had zero followers, but by posting every day–sharing her new and old songs, performing covers of songs by artists like Amy Winehouse, or just feeling a vibe–she’s built a following of over 90k. The Island Records-signed artist built much of her momentum with her sultry anthem “What A Shame,” which eventually surpassed 100k creations on TikTok. Leyla recently posted a video enthusiastically explaining how her TikTok followers helped “What A Shame” grow into a hit on Spotify, and to show that even seemingly out-of-nowhere TikTok hits are the product of hard work, not pure luck. Leyla has recently been using the app to promote “Gasoline,” her upcoming single.

All throughout February, TikTok celebrated Black History Month by honoring Black music with themed playlist, LIVE streams with artists like Kelly Rowland and Monica, and deep dives into music history with @songpsych. Today, TikTok announced even more Black History Month initiatives, including commissioned songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA, and TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration, a Black History Month finale event with performances from Snoop Dogg, Saweetie, and more. The Announcement:

No celebration of Black History Month is complete without a salute to the Black artists who shape the past, present, and future of American music. To pay special tribute to the Black community this month, TikTok shines a spotlight on Black music on and off the platform, creating themed playlists to celebrate Black music’s past, present, future & joy, hosting LIVE conversations and performances with Black artists, teaming with @SongPsych to delve into the history of Black music, and, in a first for TikTok, teaming with two of our favorite artists to commission two original songs!

“TikTok has become an incubator for Black creatives of all disciplines, and our goal is to make the playing field equitable for all. We’re excited to work with artists and creators like SongPsych to amplify the pillars of the past, present, future, and joy of Black music,” says Brandon Holman, Label Partnerships Manager at TikTok. “I’m also really proud of our new program, TikTok for Black Creatives, and that we are focused on continuing to show our dedication to Black creators’ and artists’ advancement every month of the year.”

Original Songs by Leon Bridges & KAYTRANADA

Known for his golden voice and songwriting, Grammy Award winning R&B artist Leon Bridges is the perfect figure to provide a modern window into Black music’s illustrious past. For Black History Month, Leon connects with fellow Fort Worth resident Keite Young to premiere an impassioned cover of “Like A Ship,” a beloved under-heard 1971 gospel/soul hybrid gem by Pastor T.L. Barrett. Marked by ecstatic choirs and swelling organ, Leon’s version of “Like A Ship” is both a faithful interpretation of the original and of a piece with the rest of Leon’s R&B catalogue, illustrating how Black music’s spiritual roots continue to permeate popular culture.

A producer and artist who bubbled up from the Montreal electronic music underground, KAYTRANADA lives on the cutting edge. TikTok and KAYTRANADA are proud to premiere “Caution,” a brand new original song that seamlessly blends funk, disco, and house into a futuristic mix. Layering syncopated kicks, splashy snares, and energetic vocal samples, “Caution” explores another hotspot of Black music innovation: the block party.

Together, the two songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA point to an illustrious history of Black music, while paving a path forward for both traditional and boundary-pushing sounds. Both songs will be available first as TikTok sounds, and will be released to DSPs soon.

During Black History Month, we’ve made it our mission to amplify Black voices. We’ve exclusively invited Black artists to host “Sound-Off In The Comments” interactive livestreams. In the past two weeks, we’ve aired LIVE conversations with R&B icons Ashanti and Monica. Ashanti chatted with TikTok creator and activist Jax James to talk about her career and the history of R&B music. Last week, Monica and TikTok creator and LGBTQ activist Ve’ondre Mitchell shared their skincare and haircare routines and discussed the progression of Black people in the beauty industry. Last night, Kelly Rowland hosted a LIVE conversation with with TikTok trailblazer and real estate queen @quenwilliams, celebrating the legacy Kelly has created, her influence in paving the way for so many young artist and black women, and all of the exciting things the Black community can and will accomplish.

We’ve also seen “Sound-Offs” from rising artists like Erica Banks, Coi Leray, Amorphous, and Ayzha Nyree. Stay tuned for many more livestreams, from Leon Bridges and more.

Black Music History with @SongPsych

SongPsych is a new media brand that started on TikTok as part of the Creative Learning Fund in May 2020. Since then, SongPsych has grown to over 650K followers thanks to their unique voice and detailed explainers into all elements of music theory and the music industry. This month, we’ve enlisted @SongPsych to help us delve deeper into our favorite Black music, offering deep dives into genres (including lesser-known sub-genres of hip-hop), lists of songs that sample Black music icons, explorations of the music theory behind common Black musical techniques, and more. @SongPsych, and its intrepid host @dev_lemons, conducted interviews with renowned artists like Jon Batiste, Mario, Tierra Whack, Yung Baby Tate, and more

Themed Playlists

From ragtime and jazz to disco and house to hip-hop and R&B, Black music never ceases to push the culture forward. To honor the history of Black music, our music team put together “Make Black Music,” a series of themed playlists that highlight a particular genre, era, or quality that makes Black music special. As the month progresses, the theme of the playlists shift from past (playlists highlighting Motown, rap classics, rock ‘n roll origins, and more), to present (featuring hip-hop hits, pop icons, and Afrobeats), to a glimpse of the future (house & electronic, hip-hop newcomers, future soul). The month concludes with a series of playlists celebrating the Joy of Black music. The “Make Black Music” playlists can be found on the “Discover” page and on the “Sounds” page.

TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration

TikTok’s month-long celebration ends on a high note by celebrating artists that represent the past, present, and future of West Coast Hip Hop. Airing on Friday February 26th at 8pm ET and hosted by Karen Civil and Challan, TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration traces the evolution of California rap, featuring interviews and performances from iconic Cali artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Saweetie, each with a special backdrop that speaks to their West Coast roots. The 90 minute extravaganza takes the time to shine a spotlight on Black creators, offering a close look at this year’s Black TikTok Trailblazers.

Community Support

There is no denying the cultural impact Black artists have had on TikTok and we are determined to continue to elevate the community. In addition to donating to trailblazing organizations like the Alvin Ailey Foundation (find the full details of TikTok’s Black History Month giving in its kickoff blog post), we’re continuing to develop our “TikTok for Black Creatives” incubator program, nurturing and developing 100 talented Black creators and music artists, helping to open doors for them to reach new heights in their careers.

Drawing 3.8 million combined views from more than 1 million unique viewers per night, with 46k concurrent viewers at its peak, this week’s Valentine’s Day-themed “Loud Stream” was another massive success for rap’s premier festival brand.

The second night of “Loud Stream” offered a bounty of memorable moments, anchored by Fetty Wap’s stream-closing performance of the immortal love song “Trap Queen.” Packing in six hours of non-stop performances, interviews, and commentary, the Twitch-exclusive virtual festival continued last night with a performance from viral sensation Yung Baby Tate, who covered Aaliyah’s “I Care For You” and performed her hit “I Am,” a hit-filled set from Drake collaborator Yung Bleu, romantic sets from R&B heartthrobs YK Osiris and Luh Kel, a performance of Billboard Top 25 hit “Th**t Baby” by BRS Kash, plus standout shows from Rolling Loud first-timers like Mariah The Scientist, IV Jay, and more.

During the first night of the latest “Loud Stream,” Rolling Loud once again proved that they have their fingers on the pulse of rap culture. Offering a Valentine’s Day theme, the first night of “Loud Stream” brought a performance from “Buss It” hitmaker Erica Banks, a chat-pleasing effort from YouTuber-turned-rapper DDG, an energetic closing set from headliner Lil Skies, plus memorable first impressions from TikTok favorite YN Jay, and First Lady of Griselda Armani Caesar, who invited labelmate Benny The Butcher–who performed his set from a luxurious, upholstered chair–to the stage. Serving up lightning quick bangers about his hard-living lifestyle, Smokepurpp knows how to party. More than happy to play the role of “bad influence,” Smokepurpp shares “Prom Queen,” his latest video. Using the same Wendy Rene sample made famous by the Wu-Tang Clan in “Tearz,” “Prom Queen” is an irreverent and addictive update on that song for the trap era. Switching up between clipped cadences and bursts of rapidfire syllables, Purpp flexes on his bankroll and his unique social position in high school: “I was selling acid to the prom queen.” Directed by AllTheSmoke, the video expands upon that line from the song’s hook, as a tuxedoed Purpp poses for prom pics with some baddies before joining them on the dancefloor. “Prom Queen” is the second video from Purpp’s brand new Psycho (Legally Insane) EP, following last week’s video for “We Outside” ft. Taking inspiration from the rebellious debauchery of rock star icons like GG Allin and Ozzy Osbourne, Psycho (Legally Insane) finds Purpp experimenting with new flows and an eclectic mix of instrumentals. While some tracks nod towards hip-hop history, like the Memphis-style horrorcore of “Tic Tac,“ recent single “We Outside” ft. Lil Mosey, which earned coverage in Complex and more, uses a guitar lick that resembles Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Rockstar” allows Purpp to expand his melodic arsenal. In 2020, Smokepurpp returned to his roots with Florida Jit, his high-energy full-length project. Populated with instrumentals from Ronny J, Earl On The Beat (City Girls, Lil Yachty), CBMIX (Lil Pump, Juice WRLD, Kanye West), and Purpp himself, the project is home to successful singles like “Off My Chest” ft. The Background:

The Chicago-born, Miami-raised rapper and producer Smokepurpp has been one of the cornerstones of Florida’s burgeoning rap scene since the release of his “Ski Mask” video in 2015. The buzz from the video and other singles with close friend Lil Pump culminated in a record deal with Alamo/Interscope Records and Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. The 21-year old Purpp quickly went to work, collaborating with Scott, Yo Gotti, Pump, and more. His debut release, Deadstar, spawned the gold-certified single “Audi” and generated features from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pigeons & Planes, XXL, Mass Appeal, and many more. The app’s myriad viral trends each come with their own sonic signature, helping elevate songs and artists into new (or resurgent) levels of recognition. Below, take a look at some of the artists and songs that the TikTok community is connecting with–and elevating–at the moment:

No stranger to hits and TikTok stardom, Cardi B is set for another takeover with her new single “Up” already making waves on the platform. Her first single since the record-breaking collaboration “WAP” with fellow rapper and beloved TikTok star Megan Thee Stallion, “Up” has garnered over 21k video creations and millions of views on TikTok since its Friday release. Makeup gurus, impressive drummers, and TikTok-favorite Jason Derulo have already joined in to showcase their various talents with this trendy track. Inspired by the creative community, Cardi has been highlighting her favorite dances and uses of the song on her own page, and some creative, if unhygienic, users have adopted “Up” for the M&M Roll Challenge.
Some TikTok songs catch on because of an instrumental hook, some ride to popularity on the back of a lyrical phrase, but Lil Uzi Vert’s 2017 song “Two®” is currently trending for a song-opening skit: “Uzi? Uzi? Not again! Uzi, wake your *ss up!” With over 320k video creations on the song, nearly all of them created in the past week, “Two®” inspired TikTok to send a message to sleepyheads everywhere, including hairless cats, hockey players, and social media-savvy chickens. After encountering Uzi at the Super Bowl, one enterprising TikTok user convinced Uzi himself to hop on the trend.
’00s adult-contemporary is having a serious moment on TikTok–last week Hoobastank returned to the public eye with a trend, and this week, it’s The Fray’s turn. Long a favorite of music supervisors for its plaintive piano and powerful emotions, “How To Save A Life” (81k video creations) and its chorus lyric “where did I go wrong?”, has become TikTok’s go-to soundtrack for unexpected life developments. The song’s melodrama is ripe for parody: users take the “where did I go wrong” prompt and apply them to choosing a spouse who’s susceptible to brain freezes, feeding a mom’s gossip addiction, or marveling at a child’s intense anime obsession.
The past week has been a busy one on TikTok for British singer Jessie J. Her hit song “Domino” is having a major moment, with over 850k video creations on its audio after inspiring the #DominoChallenge (195 million video views). The #challenge involves an intricate, intertwining couples dance, requiring complicated, coordinated twirls. Jessie J got in on the action on her own page, throwing on her old outfit from the song’s video and posting three different #DominoChallenge videos and racking up over 32 million video views.
Jax is one of TikTok’s most creative rising musicians, using her platform to post parody songs that provide an unseen perspective on classics. It turns out, when you look at “Jessie’s Girl” from Jessie’s perspective, Rick Springfield’s character seems like a bit of a creep! In some of her other videos, she exposes Olivia Rodrigo for her irresponsible driving, gives a terrible Yelp review for the “Hotel California,” and proves that the relationship detailed in Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8ter Boi” wasn’t built to last. In recent weeks, Jax has been showing off some of her original songs, including “Ring Pop,” which have the same verve and sense of humor as her parodies. Last week, Jax updated the lyrics to Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” to reflect Tom Brady’s quest for Super Bowl glory, and celebrated signing a record deal with Atlantic by writing an original song that details her origin story.
There’s nothing the TikTok community appreciates more than #aesthetic, and what communicates an aesthetic better than an album cover? Under the hashtag #albumcover (847m video views), , TikTok users create their own album artwork out of old photos or videos, or scenes from their favorite sitcom. The trend is often soundtracked by a user-made mashup of Kendrick Lamar’s “HiiPower” and Kanye West’s “Devil In A New Dress” (192k video creations). TikTok-beloved band Avenue Beat (of “F2020” fame) hopped on the trend, proving that anything, from a day at the beach to a Covid test, can make a good album cover.

The upcoming weekend is an eventful one for TikTok, who welcomes Justin Bieber for “Journals Live from the drew house,” the platform’s first-ever full-length livestreamed concert. #JournalsLive features Justin’s first-ever performances of songs from his 2013 album Journals, which introduced R&B elements to the young star’s sound. #Journals live airs LIVE on TikTok at 9pm ET/6pm PT on Valentine’s Day, then airs again at 2pm ET/11am PT on February 15th.

Uno Hype spent years dedicatedly improving his craft, developing a soulful hip-hop sound that sounds at once nostalgic and brand new. Reflecting on his come up and his hopes and aspirations, Uno shares “Superman,” his new video and single. Aided by Jerome Thomas, who lends his silky smooth vocals to the hook, Uno stresses the importance of following the beat of your own drum and not succumbing to the expectations of others. Shot in crisp infrared black-and-white, the “Superman” video is an allegory for loss and the perpetual inception of grief. The ILLIMITEWORLD-directed video stars Dion Williams opposite Uno Hype, following a loose storyline of Dion attempting to work through the grief he feels about the loss of his brother. The video follows Dion through a world of memory, existing in a twilight zone where Dion can relive past moments with his brother. As the plot proceeds, it becomes harder for Dion to distinguish between memory and reality. “Superman” is Uno’s latest salvo from Sol Glo, his upcoming debut album, which arrives later this month, following the soulful “Deywun” ft. Rae Kahlil, which released with a live performance video.

The Background:

He’s been making music for the better part of a decade, but Uno Hype re-emerged with an unquenchable fire in the past year. The artist is a restless creative, well known in the DMV scene for his energetic performances and wide-ranging taste. In the past, he’s collaborated with Joey Bada$$ and Smoke DZA, and performed with a trio of Maryland musicians in a hybrid punk-rap group called G.U.M.P. Uno showed the first signs of his new direction when he released “Untitled,” an autobiographical anthem that commented on his career path. Earlier this year, he kept the momentum going with singles like “Color Me,” which commented on systemic racism and earned praise from SPIN, and “Leave,” a tormented guitar-and-sax-driven duet with Amal Marie that racked up over 200k views on its lyric video. Internet Money was born out of necessity, a hybrid company that has filled in the gaps between the rap industry, the producer community, and the online marketplace. Disillusioned with the industry, and the way he saw rap producers being taken advantage of, Taz Taylor formed the collective in 2016 as a way to share the knowledge he’d gained from years spent selling his “type beats” online and navigating the internet’s ever-growing impact on the production landscape.

The Background:

The Chicago-born, Miami-raised rapper and producer Smokepurpp has been one of the cornerstones of Florida’s burgeoning rap scene since the release of his “Ski Mask” video in 2015. The buzz from the video and other singles with close friend Lil Pump culminated in a record deal with Alamo/Interscope Records and Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. Today, Pressa premiered the official music video for “Attachments” feat. Taliban Glizzy on YouTube WATCH HERE. As an upcoming rapper from the D.C. area, Taliban Glizzy proves he may be following his brother Shy Glizzy’s footsteps, but stands on his own, rounding out “Attachments” with his verse.

Crashing charts and cashing checks, Young Dolph and Key Glock are Southern rap’s most dynamic duo. Connecting over a hypnotic Bandplay beat, Dolph and Glock share “Green Light,” a new music video. This Week On TikTok: Billy Joel Takes Us to Zanzibar, Boney M Transports Us to Russia, and Mark Ronson Collaborates With the Community

The News:

TikTok is home to a diverse community with diverse tastes, but nothing unites the platform like a viral hit. TikTok hits are often unexpected, but look at trends long enough and a few patterns will emerge. The community loves to put their spin on songs with actionable lyrics, to relive their early-mid ’00s glory days, and to uncover gems from the past. Below, see some of TikTok’s latest discoveries and trends, which spring from all over the musical spectrum:

During the month of February, TikTok celebrates Black History Month by saluting its Black community and boosting the work of Black artists. To honor the past, present, future and joy of Black music in the US, the Sounds page will have special playlists, banners, featured songs, and exclusively Black artists on TikTok LIVE music series airing throughout the month. Last night, TikTok kicked off its Black History Month celebration with a special TikTok LIVE starring Ashanti, and festivities will continue with more artists participating, including Leon Bridges and Kelly Rowland, throughout the month.
TikTok has a habit of giving second life to old songs, and the latest beneficiary is German dance group Boney M. A major commercial force in Europe in the ‘disco era, they crashed the charts in 1978 with their quirky single “Rasputin,” which tells the story of the mysterious Russian nobleman. Charmed by the idiosyncratic delivery and propulsive beat, the TikTok community has embraced “Rasputin” (1.1 million video creations and 340 million views on #rasputin), creating a dance craze designed to show off workout gains (inspired by the “he was big and strong” lyric in the songs opening verse). Inspired by the flurry of creativity, Boney M. started an official TikTok page, posting archival footage of performances of “Rasputin” (this one has 3.5 million video views) and giving some context to the song’s popularity in Rasputin’s home country.
Another unexpected globetrotting song from 1978 made its way onto TIkTok’s trending charts this week: Billy Joel’s “Zanzibar.” “Zanzibar” isn’t the most-streamed or highest-charting song from Joel’s 52nd Street album (it trails “My Life” and “Big Shot” in that regard), but it’s the biggest on TikTok thanks to the efforts of @maxmith_, who created a silly and expressive dance to the song in early January. Since then, “Zanzibar” has permeated its way into TikTok ubiquity, generating over 200k video creations and enrapturing users of all ages, abilities, and species.
Last month, super producer Mark Ronson connected with Diplo and Ellie Goulding to drop “New Love,” an uptempo, dance-oriented new single. Earlier this week, Ronson posted a video on his TikTok of himself playing an instrumental version of the “New Love” verse. He invited fans to join in on the fun, asking the community for guest verses and promising to duet his favorites. So far, Ronson has duetted several of his favorites, which include a falsetto showcase from @zeemusic, a melodically inventive, Madonna-interpolating verse from @sophartso, and a cursed sea shanty mashup from Diplo himself
Brooklyn drill drips with atmosphere and braggodocio, offering a dark, yet danceable sound that the TikTok community can’t get enough of. Songs like CJ’s “Whoopty” (1.1 million video creations), Sleepy Hallow’s “Deep End Freestyle” (529k video creations), and Pop Smoke’s “Dior “ (225k video creations) all made major impacts on the platform and on the Billboard charts. The latest Brooklyn drill banger to take TikTok by storm is “ROLLIN N CONTROLLIN,” by Canarsie native Dusty Locane, with his deliberate flow and ultra-deep baritone. With over 38k video creations on TikTok, including over 25k in just the past week, “ROLLIN N CONTROLLIN” is the perfect hype-up anthem for new fathers, not-so-new fathers, and anyone who likes to dance with TikTok’s “Robot Friend” filter.
Harkening back to the heyday of TRL and VH1’s Top 20 Countdown, TikTok loves music that takes them back to the early ’00s. The latest song from that era to pick up steam on the platform is “The Reason” (63k video creations) the brooding and infernally catchy single by one-hit wonder Hoobastank. The song’s opening line (“I’m not a perfect person”) inspired the #notaperfectperson challenge (421 million video views), in which TikTok users admit their flaws over moody guitars–for example, a lifelong misinterpretation of the concept of “hibernation,” a penchant for stealing your sibling’s snacks, or a tendency to cheat on one’s diet. In a video that racked up over 2.1 million views, Hoobastank lead singer Doug Robb hopped on the challenge himself, expressing a bit of regret for giving his band such an absurd name.
Mixing ’00s nostalgia with a love for discovering new artists, the TikTok community is drawn to new rap hits that update hits from that decade, including Saweetie’s “Tap In” and “My Type,” Erica Banks’ “Buss It,” and more. The latest song to capitalize on this trend is BBY Kodie’s “Milkshake,” which samples the inimitable beat from Kelis’s 2004 classic of the same name. With over 70k video creations, “Milkshake” inspired a hip-shaking dance trend and a formula for sketch comedy that comments on the chorus’s call-and-response structure. “Milkshake” is quickly becoming KODIE’s most successful song yet, with over 4 million streams on Spotify alone.
