Run-DMC, MGMT, and More Noteworthy TikTok Stories

11.24.2020

TikTok Treats, Week Of Nov. 23rd

Latin Trap, Old School Rap, Charlie Brown and More From the World Of TikTok

The News:

Nostalgia is rising on TikTok while old hits continue to inspire new trends, but that is not all. The TikTok community continues to be the springboard for rising stars that use the platform to promote new music while building their fanbases. This week, TikTok creators mined music from the past while emerging artists simultaneously continued to pave the way for their future musical careers.

  • A precious few songs are so enduring that they transcend their moment of creation and become standards, beloved anew by each generation that discovers it. One such song is “It’s Tricky,” the immortal rock-rap anthem by Run-DMC, which was a top trending song on TikTok this week. Generating over 1 million video creations, many of which in just two weeks, the song is the go-to backing track for TikTok’s “This Or That” trend, in which users give a little glimpse of their personalities by creatively making a series of binary decisions. The trend is perfect for couplesfamilies, and parents who really hope their child brings home the right person.
  • Singer-songwriter Ricky Montgomery is an unlikely TikTok star, but his soft folk ballads have struck a nerve with the platform’s community. The Honeysticks frontman is currently trending with his 6/8 unrequited love ballad “Line Without A Hook” (114k creations) The TikTok community uses “Line Without A Hook” to celebrate the love of movie couples, celebrity couples, or even their parents. Most touchingly, it’s been adopted as an anthem by the trans community, who use the song to help connect what can seem like two different selves. Montgomery, who also had a minor TikTok hit earlier this year with his 2016 song “Mr. Loverman” (42k creations), returned the TikTok love by sharing an acoustic performance of the song.
  • Mexican producer-singer Leon Leiden has used TikTok to develop into one of his country’s most promising rising stars. The 22-year-old artist is incredibly active on the platform, posting several videos per week and often enlisting the TikTok community to help promote, and sometimes even contribute to his music. He built up a following with music commentary, detailing the history of samples in reggaeton and analyzing songs like Bad Bunny’s “Safaera.” During the first stages of quarantine, Leon started to let people into his creative process, detailing the creative process behind his song “Gitana” (26k video creations, 15 million Spotify streams), which he created by compiling contributions from talented TikTok users over his laid-back beat. Most recently, Leon has been indulging his obsession with Spongebob Squarepants, recording a new banger that samples the show’s bouncy, nautical credits music. The week-old sound already has 2.8k video creations.
  • Vince Guaraldi’s classic music for the Peanuts cartoon series has inspired joy and nostalgia for decades on end–and now it’s inspired a creative TikTok trend. In September, TikTok user @papa.squash posted a video soundtracked to Guaraldi’s “Linus & Lucy,” in which he showed the world how he would dance if he were a Peanuts character. His video caused a snowball effect over the next month, as users hopped on the Charlie Brown bandwagon with TikTok’s duet feature, adding their own unique dance styles to the Peanuts special in their heads.
  •  One of the more surprising TikTok hits of the year is MGMT’s “Little Dark Age,” the title track from their 2018 album. With over 195k video creations across multiple sounds, the vibey song soundtracks a unique trend, in which TikTok users attempt to transform themselves into figures from classic paintings. The trend has splintered into several sub-themes, allowing people to express their inner god or goddess and providing an outlet for people who believe they have “ancient faces,” or “that 1800 B.C. look.”

Along with the TikTok platform itself, artists new and old are flourishing. The trends and tracks introduced or reintroduced above are just a few examples of the ways TikTok is the bellwether for popular music. The TikTok community will continue to support established artists and identify future stars.

Oakland’s Laney Keyz Brings a Bay Area Attitude to His Melodic Raps

  • Press Release

Oakland’s Laney Keyz Brings a Bay Area Attitude to His Melodic Raps

    11.23.2020

Audio: Laney Keyz – “Drop Top Coupe”

The Oakland Native and Lil Yachty-Collaborator Shares A Breezy, Acoustic Guitar-Driven Slapper

    Critical Praise:

“Laney’s music comes from a place of support, combining infectious hooks and a delivery that reels listeners in like a prize catch.”  – DJ Booth

“Inspired greatly by Meek Mill, his music is a combination of melodic R&B and hardcore hip-hop.” – FLAUNT

“Keyz’s music is melodic and heartfelt, his three singles bouncy enough for the club but introspective enough for a late-night drive. ‘Colorful Sh*t’ is succinct and snappy, enough so that it unexpectedly caught the attention of Lil Yachty. “ – PopDust

    The Song:

Driven by his twin desires to follow his dreams and move his family out of the hood, Oakland’s Laney Keyz paves his road to success with infectious melodies and confident bars. Showing off his honeyed tenor, Keyz shares Drop Top Coupe,” his latest single. Dancing between arpeggiating acoustic guitars, the 23-year-old rapper uses his fast-talking vocal runs to paint a picture of his boss life, filled with foreign cars and beautiful women: “Pull up in different color coupes, me and my dog, callin’ it mismatch.” Produced by Win Crabtree (Gucci Mane, 50 Cent), “Drop Top Coupe” is the latest in a line of quality loose singles from Laney Keyz, following the globe-trotting Russia,” the flossy trap ballad Knockout,” and Colorful Sh*t,” which features an appearance from Lil Yachty.

Born and raised in East Oakland, Laney Keyz spent his teenage years in and out of prison. At a particularly low point, he was inspired by his idol Meek Mill to get his act together and pursue music. Laney started his in music career behind the scenes, making ends meet as an audio engineer before starting to write songs for some notable West Coast artists. After years of working on his craft, the rapper started to release music of his own in Summer 2020, gathering buzz with loose singles and by recording his own freestyles over popular beats, including Travis Scott’s “FRANCHISE” and DaBaby’s “Blind.” Now signed to Nontra Records, Laney Keyz is ready to make his name known in Oakland and beyond.

    The Background:
    Laney Keyz Background:

Laney Keyz is a slick-talking, smooth, melody-making lyricist on the verge of becoming a household name so early in his career. At just 23 years old, with a smaller discography than most under his belt, Laney Keyz has found a way to reach a subset of rap fans who’ve immediately clung to his music, image, and aesthetic, in ways that artists who’ve been in the industry for triple the time that he has haven’t been able to. He’s a prodigy with an inspiring story for anyone looking to pursue their dreams.

    Nontra Records Background:

Nontra Records is an independent record label re-established in 2020. Nontra (Short for Nontraditional) focuses on a unique approach to developing artists and helping them build their respective businesses.

    The Background:

    Rucci Background:

Rucci is a 26-year-old rapper with a deep and decorated bloodline in the streets of Inglewood’s Northside. His father, known as “Tako,” is tied to three generations of Neighbor Hood Piru (NHP) set. “He’s a living legend where we’re from, ‘cause he was the only Hispanic person from a Black gang at that time,” explains Rucci, who is Salvadoran and Black. Raised by his father, who is now deported, and an uncle who is currently serving life in prison, the artist born Juan Martinez has been groomed for navigating the streets. However, in a critically-acclaimed, rising music career, Rucci is using wisdom and charisma to change the narrative on his life and his city. “Everything bad that I had to go through is because of my dad,” he notes. Rucci’s EMPIRE debut Tako’s Son sees the rapper turning the difficult cards he’s been dealt into a winning hand.

    EMPIRE Background:

EMPIRE was founded in 2010 as an artist-friendly, progressive digital distribution company. After early success, and identifying future icons such as Kendrick Lamar, Anderson .Paak, and Rich Homie Quan, EMPIRE was quickly regarded as a tastemaker in the industry and throughout the past five years evolved into a full-fledged record label, distributor and publisher for independent musicians. With the company and roster growing at a breakneck pace, EMPIRE has effectively disrupted a stale business model by bringing its energy, expertise, and acumen to its artists and labels. Today, EMPIRE works with some of music’s hottest talent, ranging from superstars such as T.I. and Snoop Dogg, red-hot newcomers such as SOB X RBE and Mozzy, and established veterans like Jim Jones and Redman. While remaining 100% independent, EMPIRE has also partnered with Atlantic Records for a joint venture, home to breakout star D.R.A.M. and propelled singles by Fat Joe & Remy Ma (“All The Way Up,” 2x Platinum), Tyga (“Taste,” 3x Platinum), and Lil Duval (“Smile”) to the top of the Billboard Hip-Hop Charts. In April 2018, EMPIRE signed a global distribution deal with Universal Music Group for select artist projects.

Rucci Shares Midget (Deluxe), with New Tracks Featuring OhGeesy, AzChike, and More

    11.20.2020

    Album: Rucci – Midget (Deluxe)

The Inglewood Local Hero Adds 9 Songs To His Acclaimed New Album For an Expanded Dose of Cali Fire

    Critical Praise:

“On the spectrum of the new Los Angeles, Rucci sits closest to classicism, capturing the spirit of greats like Suga Free and Mack 10. But don’t mistake that homage for predictability: Rucci consumes these beats. His presence throughout this album is glowing, outsized, and even within the frames of L.A. bump — minor keys, minimal bass — he makes daring production choices. (“Lowrider” interpolates, you know, that song). But beneath the booming production and drug inventories that run rampant on Tako’s Son are stories of deep loss and chosen family” – NPR

“Rucci is one of the few young and buzzing West Coast rappers capable of pleasing both emcee traditionalists and those seeking true starpower and hit-making potential… Inglewood’s chosen son is on his way to stardom.” – HYPEBEAST

“… has raw neighborhood-star quality that leads to raucous and overpacked live shows.” – Billboard

    Critical Praise:

“Even if you aren’t familiar with L.A. production collective Internet Money, you’ve heard their beats. The group’s sounds have powered some of hip-hop’s biggest records in the past couple years, from Rich the Kid’s “Plug Walk” and Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” to Drake’s “Blue Tint.” The group is helmed by Taz Taylor, a Florida native who — true to his collective’s name — has accumulated a fortune primarily through the internet.” – The FADER

“Taz Taylor doesn’t consider himself an overnight success, but he’s definitely having a moment.” – Variety

“Taylor’s Internet Money collective has been a rousing success so far. The group boasts some 300,000 subscribers on YouTube and millions of hits online. He’s invited prominent producers into the fold, such as KC Supreme, who has worked with Megan Thee Stallion, Nick Mira, who has worked with Post Malone and Tierra Whack, and JRHITMAKER, who has worked with and 6ix9ine.” – Complex

    The Remix:

Following the release of their debut album B4 The Storm and the global success of “Lemonade”, Internet Money returns once more with a new remix of “Lemonade” featuring 6x Multi-Platinum-selling Reggaeton artist Anuel AA. With 18M+ streams in Spanish-speaking territories alone, the new remix arrives in celebration of the single’s success both in the U.S. and around the world.

The original version of “Lemonade,” featuring NAVGunna, and Don Toliver, was released on August 14 alongside a Cole Bennett-directed music video. Certified platinum last month, the song has accumulated over 316M Spotify streams and reigns the #1 spot on Spotify’s US Top 50 and #2 on Rap Caviar. Produced by hitmakers Taz Taylor, Nick Mira, Pharaoh Vice and E-Trou, “Lemonade” is a laid-back jam that sees the emcees delivering creative flexes with breezy melodies atop gently plucked guitars, played by Alec Wigdahl. The song is currently #6 on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and #6 on their Global 200 chart. The song recently climbed to the number one spot of Mediabase’s Rhythmic airplay chart.

Put together over a two-week period during quarantine at the Internet Money headquarters in LA, B4 The Storm features contributions from Future, Kevin Gates, and Swae Lee, as well as artists that Internet Money has built with from the beginning, like Juice WRLD, Lil Tecca, Trippie Redd, and Lil SkiesB4 The Storm celebrates what Internet Money had accomplished in such a short time and showcases the tireless work ethic of a dynamic group with their eyes set on the future.

Starting as a type-beat factory and growing into a global powerhouse, Taz Taylor and Internet Money have earned 3 Grammy nominations, 58 platinum plaques, 33 gold, and 14 Billboard #1 hits since 2018. The collective is behind some of the biggest rap and R&B hits of the past few years, including Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” (1.3 billion Spotify streams), Trevor Daniel’s “Falling” (#1 Billboard Mainstream Pop, 37 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with #17 peak), Lil Tecca’s “Ransom” (700 million Spotify streams, #4 Hot 100), and XXXTentacion’s “Fuck Love” ft. Trippie Redd (the most-played song in SoundCloud history). With B4 The Storm, Taz Taylor and Internet Money make a compelling case case for being the music industry’s most powerful hitmaking collective.

On Tuesday November 24th, Internet Money, Don Toliver, NAV, and Gunna will perform “Lemonade” on The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon. Tune in on NBC at 11:30pm.

    The Background:
    Internet Money Background:

Internet Money was born out of necessity, a hybrid company that has filled in the gaps between the rap industry, the producer community, and the online marketplace. Disillusioned with the industry, and the way he saw rap producers being taken advantage of, Taz Taylor formed the collective in 2016 as a way to share the knowledge he’d gained from years spent selling his “type beats” online and navigating the internet’s ever-growing impact on the production landscape.

Four years in, Internet Money has expanded as a collective, including Grammy-nominated producers like Nick Mira and JR Hitmaker, and produced for DrakeTrippie ReddJuice WRLD, and many more. “When you’re in Internet Money, you get the same opportunities that I do, you’re gonna be working with the same artists that I’m working with, and getting credits with them,” Taylor says. “Instead of working with a bunch of people we don’t know, we just have our own network that’s one big family.” Following their success breaking major artists like Trevor Daniel, and co-producing his multi-platinum hit “Falling,” Taylor and Internet Money partnered with Elliot Grange’s 10K Projects in 2019 to launch their own label.

    Taz Taylor Background:

Taz Taylor has never cared about fame or clout. To hear the multi-platinum producer and Internet Money founder tell it, everything he’s done — from turning his online production hustle selling “type beats” into a $500,000 per year business to forming his own label — has been born out of necessity and guided by intuition. “I’ve been so tunnel vision during the last five years to make sure I got to this point,” he says. “It was just like, Let’s keep building.”

Though the 27-year-old has only been in the industry for a few years, his accomplishments in that time have come at a staggering pace, notching, by his estimation, over 500 placements and around 200 gold and platinum plaques between himself and the other producers on his Internet Money team. As their leader, Taylor has quickly become a new sort of rap mogul, one who’s built his steadily growing empire from a deep knowledge of the ways music moves online, and he’s done it all from the humblest of beginnings.

DC The Don Drops Deluxe Edition Of Rostrum Records Debut Album, ‘Come As You Are’

    11.20.2020

DC The Don Drops Deluxe Version of Come As You Are, His Rostrum Records-Debut

The Milwaukee Native Shares a New Video For His Pop-Punk-Flavored Single, “Wait Your Turn”

The 20-Year-Old Multi-Talent Adds Several Unreleased Songs To His Highly-Anticipated, Melodic Full-Length

    Critical Praise:

“Not only can he sing with so much emotion behind his words, but he also knows how to masterfully rap as well as switch up his cadences constantly, always keeping you guessing about what he’s going to do next.” – Lyrical Lemonade

“Los Angeles by way of Milwaukee’s DC The Don is part rapper, part rockstar, excelling in the melodic and riotous lane popularized by cult heroes like Lil Uzi Vert and Trippie Redd.” – Audiomack

    The Album + Video:

Praising the power of individuality in his versatile music, DC The Don blends athletic rhymes and emo vocals into an impressive future-rap package. Today, he’s released a deluxe edition of Come As You Are, DC’s engaging and hyper-melodic debut album, which has amassed more than 45 million streams across platforms. This new souped-up cut of the record unearths six unreleased tracks, including a sinister and head banging track, “MW3 FREESTYLE,” the auto-tuned, spaced-out vibe of “STOP BEING SO NICE,” and the video game-esque “WORST DAY :(,” which finds DC scoring over an arcade-ready beat.

Along with the deluxe edition, DC The Don shares a video for Wait Your Turn, one of the standout additions to Come As You Are. Built around a ferocious guitar riff that would feel at home on a Blink 182 album, “Wait Your Turn” wears DC’s emo and alt-rock influences on his sleeves, as he forgoes his lightning quick rhymes in favor of emotional wails. Produced by Trademark, “Wait Your Turn” proves that DC makes as convincing a rock star as he does a rap star. In the new video, we find DC and his main squeeze enjoying milkshakes at a local diner, that looks straight out of a ’50s film, before hitting up a function with the homies. Things get a little heated towards the end as the drinks get involved and she storms out, then, much to her surprise, gets beamed up off the street by a UFO.

CAYA emphasizes the importance of being authentic to your creative self, and reflects the 20-year-old rapper’s willingness to put in the work and create his own lane in a stifling city. The  album is home to previously released fan favorites like the pop-punk Jesus Can’t Save You, the Supah Mario-produced Nascar Racer,” and the recent video single “HELLO DC!” With additional production from Trademark, GarzaSephGotTheWaves, and others, Come As You Are (Deluxe) is available everywhere via Rostrum Records.

Rising Star Morray Follows Up “Quicksand” with Heartfelt “Switched Up” Video

  • Press Release

Rising Star Morray Follows Up “Quicksand” with Heartfelt “Switched Up” Video

    11.20.2020

    Video: Morray – “Switched Up”

The Fayetteville, NC Native Who Struck Gold With “Quicksand” Proves That He’s Here to Stay with Another Quality Video Single

    Critical Praise:

“Few crooning rappers have his polish, resonance, and soul.” – SPIN

    The Video:

Bursting out of Fayetteville, North Carolina with a versatile voice and an entrancing charisma, Morray arrived fully-formed and took the internet by storm. Following up his breakout hit Quicksand,” the artist shows a ragged and soulful side in Switched Up,” his new video single. Alternately rapping and singing in his expressive church-trained tenor, Morray weaves within plaintive piano chords and syncopated snare snaps, venting his anger towards a fake friend who betrayed him. He locks into the beat, finding the pocket and switching up fast-paced cadences as he mixes witty basketball references with pangs of raw emotion: “You was my n****a, man, you was my homie, man, I put my guard away/And I learned that friendships fade like Penny Hardaway.” In the video, Morray posts up in his living room with some homies, expressively delivering his rhymes with the passion and commitment of an award-winning actor.

Arriving on the scene fully-formed, Morray made massive waves with his debut single Quicksand. Built around a bluesy minor-key guitar loop, “Quicksand” showcases the young rapper’s limitless array of lyrical and vocal weapons, telling the story of his desire to escape difficult circumstances with lightning quick triplets, syncopated counter-rhythms, ultra-smooth melodies, and assonant internal rhymes. Since a jit stood tall with a kick stand/Thinking of a plan to get quick bands/Falling in deep with the quicksand/Flag out my ass, no quick brand.” Directed by @jaxofnorth, the video proved that Morray is as captivating on camera as he is behind the mic, as he showed off his nimble dance moves with a Belaire bottle in hand.

Released on October 30th, the “Quicksand” video was an instant sensation, drawing praise from across the industry and the internet. The video racked up over 1 million views in less than three weeks of release, and earned over 800k Spotify streams after its inclusion in the Most NecessaryThe Realest Down South, and Fresh Finds playlists. “Quicksand” earned powerful co-signs from the likes of fellow North Carolinian J. Cole, superstar DJ Marshmello, rap icon Rick Ross,, and most importantly, Morray’s mom. Stay tuned for much more from the versatile artist.

The Singer/Rapper Praises Self Love in the Warm and Engaging Live Performance Video for Album Highlight “Deywun”

Uno Hype’s Next Album Is the Culmination of the Artist’s Musical Journey

    Critical Praise:

“As the universe tests all your strength, Maryland’s Uno Hype doubles down on his faith in the next generation by kicking game through a waterfall of horns.” – NPR

“For people who are going to blow up and the whole country might hear about them soon, that’s got to be Uno Hype and Black Fortune.” – Washington Post

“If Hype had blown up years ago, maybe he wouldn’t be making these songs today. Sometimes, the slow burn is better.” – SPIN

    The Announcement:

Uno Hype‘s vocal delivery straddles the line between singing and rapping, squeezing into the nooks and crannies of jazz-influenced instrumentals and finding inspirational hooks. Continuing a new artistic direction that prizes warmth, musicality, and self-expression above all esle, Uno announces Sol Go, his next album. Created in collaboration with musicians from his Maryland community, including executive producer kojo a. and vocalists like Amal Marie and Rae KahlilSol Glo is an absorbing tour through Uno’s sub-conscious, marked by layered vocal harmonies and organic instrumentation.

Weaving between sparkling keyboards and expressive trumpets, he rejects the short-term benefits of clout-chasing in favor of pursuing his artistic passion, delivering pearls of earned wisdom in his malleable melodic raps. Featuring additional appearances from Jurdan BryantJerome Thomas, and Jordan Ward, production from kojo a.Childish MajorHollywood JBnicky quinnChristoOliver Malcolm, and Rvdical the Kid, and instrumentation from Ryan Svendsen (trumpet), Seb Zillner (woodwinds), and Bianca McClure (violin), Sol Glo arrives in January 2021.

Along with the album announcement, Uno shares Deywun,” a soulful and lyrical new single. Stepping between subdued horn blasts, Uno speaks directly to artists and others suffering from self-doubt, stressing the importance of conquering those negative thoughts before embarking on an artistic journey: “Nobody gonna show you how to love yourself/This world don’t love you like you think it do/There’s always somethin’, somethin’, somethin’/But shawty, it’s a new day now.” Despite dealing with heady subject matter, “Deywun” is always light on its feet, thanks to Uno’s soulful slide, his chemistry with guest artist Rae Kahlil, and the liveliness of the backing band. Uno showcases the song’s unique vibe in a new live performance video, in which Uno and Rae kick it in the studio with a jazz trio, performing the song with an easy, engaging warmth.

“The ‘Deywun’ artwork shows a young Uno Hype probably about age 3 or 4,” says Uno. “I believe this is in 1996 when we were living in Cinnamon Woods in Germantown, MD, This was before the evils of the world got to us. It’s very fitting because this is a photo with me and my fam and some folks very close to me. I felt this picture embodies what a day one truly is.”

He’s been making music for the better part of a decade, but Uno Hype re-emerged with an unquenchable fire in 2020. The artist is a restless creative, well known in the DMV scene for his energetic performances and wide-ranging taste. In the past, he’s collaborated with Joey Bada$$ and Smoke DZA, and performed with a trio of Maryland musicians in a hybrid punk-rap group called G.U.M.P. Uno showed the first signs of his new direction when he released Untitled,” an autobiographical anthem that commented on his career path. Earlier this year, he kept the momentum going with singles like “Color Me,” which commented on systemic racism and earned praise from SPIN, and Leave,” a tormented guitar-and-sax-driven duet with Amal Marie that racked up over 200k views on its lyric video

With the upcoming Sol Glo, Uno Hype looks to fulfill his promise, collecting his deepest thoughts and musical passions into a cohesive document that builds on his past and blazes a path towards the future. Stay tuned.

Key Glock Returns With A Whole Lotta Everything in “All Of That” Video

    11.18.2020

Video: Key Glock – “All Of That”

The Paper Route EMPIRE Rising Star Returns for His First New Song Since May’s Son Of A Gun Mixtape

    Critical Praise:

“If somebody wants to know what current day Memphis rap sounds like, show them Key Glock. The 21-year-old has uncontrollable energy, can tell a funny story, and says it all over beats that pay homage to the city’s history while still incorporating a modern bounce.” – Pitchfork

“Rags-to-riches stories are a constant in rap, but Glock’s enthusiasm is infectious. Coupled with hard-hitting beats—from the slinky guitars and 808s of opener “1997” to the subwoofer-crushing drums of lead single “Mr. Glock”—Yellow Tape is enough reason to celebrate making it to the finish line on any given day. May the congregation say amen.” – Complex

“Key Glock is Memphis’s best new lyricist.” – The FADER

    The Video:

The rising star of a burgeoning Memphis rap scene, Key Glock is known for his thudding flows and boastful wordplay. Proving that he was born to shine, Key Glock shares All Of That,” his new music video. Rocking a cadence that resembles a street nursery rhyme  (“N***a that ain’t this/And n**** this ain’t that/I’m a dog ass n****, I ain’t never chased a cat”) atop swelling synth strings, Glock methodically establishes that he has everything he’s dreamed of since he “jumped up off the porch,” including the respect of his city. In the video, Glock shuffles between the club and the studio–wherever he goes, he has diamonds on his wrist. “All Of That” is Glock’s first new song since the release of Son Of A Gun, Glock’s mixtape, which debuted at #37 on the Billboard 200 in May.

Signed to Young Dolph‘s Paper Route EMPIRE label, Key Glock established himself as a bonafide star in 2020, reaching the top 40 of the Billboard 200 with two different projects and without any guest artists. Son Of A Gun followed January’s successful Yellow Tape, which hosted successful singles like Look At They Face,” the suave Mr. Glock,” and the sinister I’m Just Sayin’.” Praised by PitchforkComplex, and more, the project reached #16 on the Billboard 200. His two 2020 releases built on the success of 2019’s Dum & Dummerthe rapper’s collaborative project with Young Dolph. The prolific 23-year-old is hard at work on his next project, set to release in the coming months.

His biggest hit to-date, “Deep End Freestyle,” gets its power from Sleepy’s charisma and the haunting beat from Great John, with a ghostly vocal from Fousheé, who grimly intones “I don’t think you want to go off the deep end.” The song caught fire on TikTok (515k video creations), whose users latched onto the entrancing interplay between Sleepy’s forceful lyrics and Fousheé’s haunting hook and propelled the song to #80 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Lil Durk – “3 Headed Goat” ft. Lil Baby & Polo G
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
Long beloved in the streets, Lil Durk made the leap to mainstream stardom in 2020. “3 Headed Goat,” a percolating street anthem produced by Cicero and Aviator Keyz, was a major reason why. The track is anchored by a soaring hook from Lil Baby, a hot-headed verse from Polo G, and an impressive style-switching verse from Durkio himself. The centerpiece of his Billboard Top 5 album Just Cause Y’All Waited 2, “3 Headed Goat” spent 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #43.

REASON – “Sauce” ft. Vince Staples
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
A master of wordplay who perfectly modulates his delivery to suit his meaning, L.A. native REASON only speaks the truth. There are many highlights from the Top Dawg Ent. signee’s album New Beginnings, but “Sauce,” which sees him going toe-to-toe with fellow SoCal wordsmith Vince Staples over a minimal beat defined by two-chord jazz piano and crisp handclaps is the best example of REASON’s pure rap talent.

    REASON’s best line: “Treat a queen like a queen, don’t give a b*tch shit/New whip, sh*t crawl like insects”

Vince’s best line: “With my dawgs on the stick like a bomb suite/Cooking up, better duck like a confit.”

03 Greedo – “Bands In The Basement” ft. Chief Keef
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
03 Greedo continued to make his mark from behind bars in 2020, releasing more highlights from his prolific pre-prison period of creativity. Produced by Ron-RonTheProducer, a frequent Greedo collaborator, “Bands In The Basement” pairs Greedo with Chief Keef, another experimenter who blurs the lines between singing and rapping, creating a simmering, percolating slice of West Coast rap packed with mantra-like melodies and hypnotic hooks.

King Von – “Took Her To The O”
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
Gone far too soon, King Von will be remembered for his animated delivery and peerless mastery of street narratives. Both qualities are out in full force on “Took Her To The O,” a frenetic, Chopsquad DJ-produced account of an unfortunate encounter in Chicago’s O’Block. With over 36 million views on its music video, “Took her To The O” inspires vigorous head-nodding along with Von’s gripping delivery and shameful laughs at Von’s pitch black humor.

Long Live King Von, one of his generation’s most-talented rappers.

Young Dolph “RNB” ft. Megan Thee Stallion
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
Young Dolph carved his own path to the top of the game, using his entrepreneurial skills to build one of rap’s most powerful indie labels. He scored his biggest radio hit yet with “RNB,” a collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion, which peaked at #8 on Billboard’s R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay chart. A propulsive rider’s anthem produced by Juicy J and informed by the sounds of Dolph’s native Memphis, the song finds Dolph and Megan trading bars about their luxurious lives. The two rap titans are two sides of the same coin, each of them looking for an equal partner to help them build their burgeoning empires.

    $NOT – “Revenge”
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
A misanthropic introvert with expert pop instincts, Florida rapper $NOT is quickly becoming one of his generation’s defining voices. The 22-year-old artist digs deep into what makes him retreat inside his tightly-wrapped hoodie on “Revenge.” The Eem Triplin-produced track finds a broken-hearted $NOT picking at his scabs, suffering from the wounds caused by 1000 betrayals: “Sometimes I can really be f*cked up/Ain’t nothing much to say but ‘hey, goodbye’/Everybody wanna tell the truth, but lie/I can see these n****s right through my eyes.” The gently melodic single got the video treatment from Cole Bennett, who premiered it on his Lyrical Lemonade channel (6 million views).

Smokepurpp – “Tide Pen” ft. Jack Harlow
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
SoundCloud veteran Smokepurpp used 2020 to sharpen his pen, expand his sound, and embrace his Florida roots. Produced by Earl On The Beat, the man behind hits like City Girls’ “Act Up” and Lil Yachty’s “Oprah’s Bank Account,” “Tide Pen” is a flute-laden trap head-nodder, as Purpp and guest rapper Jack Harlow trade bars about their luck with the ladies. The song boasts a zany animated video, which hurdles from one striking image to the next as the two rappers strut their stuff.

    Drakeo The Ruler – “Fictional”
press release | youtube | spotify | apple
After a years-long legal ordeal in which his rap lyrics were used against him in the courtroom, Drakeo The Ruler is finally free. He made his racist accusers look silly with his album Thank You For Using GTL, in which he rapped about crashing foreign cars and running up checks through a prison phone–boasts that could not feasibly be taken literally coming from the then-incarcerated artist. The L.A. rapper delivered his thesis statement and dismantled the D.A.’s argument on “Fictional,” the album’s closing track: “It might sound real, but it’s fictional/I love that my imagination gets to you.”

Mulatto “B*tch From Da Souf” Remix ft. Saweetie & Trina
press release | youtube spotify apple
Brassy and fearless, Mulatto forced her way into the mainstream in 2020, becoming one of only two female artists on XXL’s Freshman list. Her rise to prominence started with “B*tch From Da Souf,” a thumping, sex-positive crunk-era throwback, bolstered by a remix featuring Trina and Saweetie. Packed with memorable lines that you can’t repeat in front of your mom, “B*tch From The Souf” became the Atlanta artist’s first RIAA-certified Gold record.

    Comethazine – “Derek Jeter”
press release | youtube spotify apple
With an attitude that ranges from curmudgeon to supervillain, Comethazine is one of rap’s most reliable purveyors of bite-sized bangers. A highlight from his Bawskee 4 project, “Derek Jeter” finds the 22-year-old rapper snarling atop booming kick drums and ominous brass fanfares, keeping the same rhyme scheme for the song’s 93-second runtime: “Single life for me cause I chose to be a cheater/Dolo when I slide, I pull up just me and my heater.”

Showcasing Rucci’s tireless work ethic, the album will feature all fifteen songs on the initial release as well as nine new tracks. Though he’s still one of the best at the game at delivering disrespectful neo-West Coast slappers–including Bad Boys” featuring his frequent collaborator AzChikeMidget shines when Rucci gets in touch with his feelings, saluting a ride-or-die bae with the Zapp & Roger-sampling “Killa, lamenting a lost friendship in the touching and melodic “Understand, and silencing his doubters with help from Mozzy in “Believe In Me.”

With instrumentals that range from hard-hitting street slappers to chill electro-funk samplers, Midget is packed with breakneck flows and relentless bars, and even gives Rucci the chance to show off his silky singing voice.

Rucci Shares “Complicated” Video & Announces Deluxe ‘Midget’ LP

    11.17.2020

Rucci Announces Deluxe Of Sophomore Album Midget, Shares Video To Title Track “Complicated”

Inglewood’s Rap Prodigy Returns To His Roots In “Complicated” Video, The Deluxe Midget LP Will Be Available 11/20 via Mackk & Co./EMPIRE

“… L.A.’s most exciting rappers at the moment, capturing the raw energy of their respective neighborhoods on tracks like ‘Arco’ and ‘Like Woah.'” – The FADER

    Critical Praise:

“In four and a half years — beginning small in Miami, and now promoting Coachella-sized events around the country — Rolling Loud has established itself as a playground for the young…This time last year, many of the rappers now drawing crowds of several thousand were barely known.” – The New York Times

“Rolling Loud is the be-all of hip-hop festivals.” – Billboard

“The Rolling Loud New York experiment was a success—one which will likely earn it a return trip to the city in future years. Far from a traditional NYC rap experience, it was a two-day event that catered to the genre’s youngest fans, with an eye squarely focused on the future.” – Complex

“In only its fifth year with four major destinations and more in the pipeline overseas, athletes, celebrities and others are forking over as much as $20,000 for VIP packages. Of course, imitators are cropping up.” – Pollstar

“…within five years Rolling Loud has grown into one of the biggest hip-hop brands in the world. Locally, it has surpassed rival events Ultra and III Points in stature and rivals prestige festivals like Coachella.” – Miami New Times

Taleban Dooda Wants to Make His Family Proud in “Finish Him” Video

    11.17.2020

Video: Taleban Dooda – “Finish Him” (Prod. TM88 & ATL Jacob)

The Rostrum Records Signee Shares an Intimate Clip of His Buzzing New Single

    Critical Praise:

“At only 18 years old.. his talents are already overly abundant and his potential is probably higher than most up and coming artists you could name off the top of your head.” – Lyrical Lemonade

“He falls into the lane of melodic street rap that acts like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Durk, Teejay3k, and others are making, but his high-pitched vocals and limitless subject matter set him apart.” – Earmilk

    The Video:

Taleban Dooda‘s pure tenor and mastery of melody makes him a good bet to become Florida’s next breakout rap star. Sharing an intimate portrait of life on the grind, Dooda shares Finish Him,” his new video. With a beat from TM88 and ATL Jacob, “Finish Him” is an atmospheric and brooding trap ballad, which gives Dooda the space to weave together streetwise witticisms: “My opps don’t pop out, They bring the cops out/I mean they cop out, We still blow blocks down.” In the video, directed by Jacob Hale and produced by Heatwave Global, Dooda shows us how he lives, as he rides in the backseat of a Bentley, mobs in a parking lot with his homies, and prepares for war in a desolate motel room. With over a million streams across platforms since its November 5th release, “Finish Him” is the latest in a line of quality loose singles from the 18-year-old East Tampa native. The track peaked at #8 (US) & #9 (WW) on Soundcloud’s New & Hot Charts (All Genres) and is currently sitting at #31 on the Top 50 All Genre & Hip Hop (US).

Though Taleban Dooda only started rapping at the age of 15, he used his innate sense of melody to gain inroads in his state’s rap scene. After working hard behind the scenes to build a backlog of bangers, Dooda struck gold with Tru Colors,” his first-ever release, racking up over 2 million streams, generating over 1 million views on its YouTube video, and reaching #18 on SoundCloud’s worldwide New & Hot chart. The teenager kept the momentum going with collaborations with his frequent rap partner Rees Money, and successful video singles like 2 In Da Morning” (900k views). Most recently, the Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records signee shared Dis Dooda,” which Vice named as one of the 24 Best Songs of September. Stay tuned for much more from the teenaged rapper as he continues to develop into one of the South’s most exciting rap talents.

DJ Scheme Officially Announces FAMILY, His Debut Album Coming December 4th via Scheme Records/EMPIRE

The Florida Rap Scene Heavy-Hitter Recruits Ski Mask The Slump God, Cordae, and Take a Daytrip for “Soda” Single

The Producer/DJ/Artist’s Debut Album Celebrates the Concept of Family and Kinship With Help From Dozens of His Close Friends, Who Also Happen to Be Rap’s Biggest Names

    Critical Praise:

    2019 XXL Freshman DJ

“DJ Scheme is a driving force behind Miami’s Members Only collective, and his menacing beats helped turn XXXTentacion and Juice WRLD into household names.” – Consequence of Sound

“The Palm Beach-raised music curator and general of vibes Gabe Guerra, better known as DJ Scheme, is among the biggest influencers in South Florida hip-hop…Think of him as DJ Clue to Miami’s up-and-coming Jay-Zs.” – Miami New Times

    The Announcement:

A musical polymath respected across the rap game, DJ Scheme is the connective tissue of Florida’s bustling rap scene. Finally ready to show the world what he can do as a lead artist, Scheme officially announces FAMILY, his highly-anticipated debut album. Created with the help of dozens of the rap scene’s most vital talents, FAMILY is a testament to the power of creative collaboration, as Scheme blends a wide variety of styles, voices, and dispositions into a cohesive whole. The album celebrates musical kinship, and the way creative partnerships can create deep familial connections and reinforce a sense of community.

“Collaboration is everything,” says Scheme. “And that’s something that I stand by. That’s how you’re going to get the best out of me every time.”

The 23-year-old DJ had a hand in the production of all 17 tracks on FAMILY, which follows a naturally invigorating rhythm that echoes Scheme’s DJ sets at Rolling Loud and elsewhere. Though a full tracklist announcement is coming soon, Scheme recently revealed the star-studded album cover art, giving fans a sneak peek at the album’s insanely high level of talent. Arriving December 4thFAMILY is the first release by Scheme’s new venture Scheme Records, a partnership with EMPIRE.

Along with the official announcement of the album, Scheme shares Soda,” a brand new banger with appearances from Cordae and Scheme’s close friend Ski Mask The Slump God. Produced by Scheme and Take A Daytrip, “Soda” is an irresistibly bouncy banger, complete with off-kilter arpeggios and Scheme’s signature booming bass. On the surface, Ski Mask and Cordae seem to be an odd pair, but they find the same wavelength on “Soda,” flexing their superlative technical rhyming abilities with angular flows and tongue-twisting lyricism: “Don’t even gotta finish my sentence, they feelin’ my presence/Like a navy but your closed eyelids/Feelin’ like a menace to Society, I’m Dennis The Menace without sobriety/Hold my beer,” rhymes Ski. One of the most mosh pit-ready songs on the upcoming project, “Soda” delivers the unexpected chemistry and hard-hitting rhymes that fans can expect from the rest of the album.

Though he’s just 23-years-old, DJ Scheme has evolved into one of the rap industry’s most influential figures. The Miami native started his career as a tour DJ for wifisfuneral, before linking up with Ski Mask The Slump God and XXXTentacion and joining their Members Only collective. Over the past half-decade, Scheme has evolved into one of rap’s most in-demand DJ’s, serving as official tour DJ for the likes of Juice WRLDPouyaRobb Bank$Fat Nick, and more. In 2019, XXL tapped Scheme to be the official DJ for its 2019 Freshman Cyphers. In 2019, Scheme released the PRESEASON EP, his first release as a lead artist, featuring the hit single “How You Feel” ft. Ski Mask The Slump God Danny Towers, which recently earned a GOLD certification from the RIAA.

DJ Scheme is a fixture at Rolling Loud, hip-hop’s biggest festival brand, performing DJ sets at every Rolling Loud event since its inception and acting as master of ceremonies for the emotional Juice WRLD memorial during Rolling Loud Los Angeles 2019. As the official DJ of Rolling Loud’s Twitch channel, Scheme has evolved into an engaging on-camera personality, regularly co-hosting Rolling Loud’s “The Rotation” talk show and acting as host for two “Loud Stream” virtual festivals.

Video: Young Dolph – “No Sense” ft. Key Glock

The Dynamic Paper Route EMPIRE Duo Show Us How They Live in the Latest Rich Slave Music Video

    The Video:

Few rap duos have the charisma and chemistry of Young Dolph and Key Glock. Today, the two Paper Route EMPIRE rappers reunite for No Sense,” a colorful new music video. Re-kindling the connection that powered their Billboard Top 10-peaking joint album Dum & DummerDolph and Glock dive headfirst into a beat by Supah Mario Cassius Jay, rhyming about their ever-growing bankrolls and their unassailable street reputations: “Everybody know that he a big sh*t popper/Smokin’ ice cream, rollin’ on some peach cobbler,” spits Dolph. In the video, D&G defy the feds by retreating to a colorful soundstage where they luxuriate amidst a few of their favorite things: bands of cash, camo-wrapped sports cars, and more. “No Sense” is the latest video from Rich Slave, Dolph’s deeply personal and highly successful new album, following the searing political statement of “The Land” (1.7 million views).

Emphasizing his Memphis roots with Dirty South instrumentals, the album explores Dolph’s rags to riches story, while taking time to reflect on the glass ceiling on the upward mobility of Black people; no amount of money allows you to escape racism as a Black person in this country. The album is home singles like the West Coast tribute Death Row, the conversational Blue Diamonds (8.4 million views), and the Megan Thee Stallion-featuring riders’ anthem RNB,” which reached the top ten of Billboard’s Hip-Hop/R&B airplay chart. Rich Slave peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and hit #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart, selling over 65k units and generating over 44 million on-demand streams in its first week. Featuring an additional appearance from G HerboRich Slave is available everywhere via Paper Route EMPIRE.

DC The Don Unleashes His Inner Rock Star with “Wait Your Turn”

  • Press Release

DC The Don Unleashes His Inner Rock Star with “Wait Your Turn”

    11.12.2020

Audio: DC The Don – “Wait Your Turn”

The 20-Year-Old Milwaukee Native Shows Off His Versatility in the Pop-Punk-Flavored Single

    The Song:

A multifaceted talent who can craft soaring melodies as well as fast-paced rhymes, DC The Don uses his music to stress the importance of always being yourself. Indulging his inner rock star, DC The Don shares Wait Your Turn, his latest single. Built around a ferocious guitar riff that would feel at home on a Blink 182 album, “Wait Your Turn” wears DC’s emo and alt-rock influences on his sleeves, as he forgoes his lightning quick rhymes in favor of emotional wails. The song mixes the guitar riff with a swinging trap-adjacent instrumental, as DC The Don works through relationship woes with a woman who is moving too fast for his liking: “Baby it’s no rush, you gotta wait your turn, yeah/Baby when you cut it burns ya/Where you at, I’m still concerned, yeah/I’m goin’ back I guess I never learn, yeah.” Produced by Trademark, “Wait Your Turn” proves that DC makes as convincing a rock star as he does a rap star.

“Wait Your Turn” is the rapper’s first new song since the release of Come As You Are, DC’s engaging and hyper-melodic debut album, which has amassed more than 40 million streams across platforms. Spanning 14 tracks, CAYA emphasizes the importance of being authentic to your creative self, and reflects the 20-year-old rapper’s willingness to put in the work and create his own lane in a stifling city. The new album is home to previously released fan favorites like the pop-punk Jesus Can’t Save You, the hard-hitting collab Red Light” ft. DDG & YBN Almighty Jay, and the Supah Mario-produced Nascar Racer.” With additional production from Trademark, GarzaSephGotTheWaves, and others, Come As You Are is available everywhere via Rostrum Records.

    The Background:

DC The Don is a rapper from Milwaukee, WI. In 2016, at the age of 16 and standing 6’7”, DC moved to Los Angeles to pursue a basketball career under Lavar Ball and alongside teammate LaMelo Ball. During this time, he fell in love with music and used his spare time to make experimental records which suddenly gained traction – As the public became increasingly aware of DC The Don’s talent for rapping, NBA player Lonzo Ball featured his song “Everything 1k” on the first Big Baller Brand shoe commercial, introducing DC The Don’s music to an even wider audience. DC signed to Rostrum Records in 2020, releasing his debut album Come As You Are on August 7th, generating over 40 million streams across platforms.

Ariana Grande, Rick Astley, and Other Fun TikTok Developments

    11.11.2020

TikTok Treats, Week Of November 9th

Ariana Grande, Rick Astley and More TikTok Stories

    The News:

Music trends on TikTok run the gamut of origins. They can come from superstars, veterans, up-and-comers, or international artists. TikTok offers an even playing field for acts of all types–their success is limited only by how much creativity they inspire in the community. Below, check out some recent trends, including songs from current, former, and up-and-coming pop stars, and rappers from two different continents:

    • Last week, TikTok got a surprise visit from the originator of one of the Internet’s most enduring memes. Now, nearly 15 years since the Internet discovered the RickRollRick Astley joined TikTok and RickRolled the whole app (17 million video views). As he continues to post videos to TikTok with songs that inspire him, including Curtis Waters’ TikTok hit “Stunnin,” it becomes clearer and clearer that Rick’s never gonna give it up.
    • Ariana Grande returned at the end of October with positions, which recently became her third number one album in two years. Unsurprisingly, her recent number one single “positions” is becoming a TikTok hit, inspiring a transition trend that comments on her chorus lyrics (“Switchin’ the positions for you/ Cookin’ in the kitchen and I’m in the bedroom”) and racking up over 215k video creations. The TikTok community, however, has picked its own favorite song from the album–”pov,” which has already generated more videos than “positions” (500k+ creations). A touching ballad about seeing yourself through your partner’s eyes, “pov” inspired its own trend, where users show “all of my pretty, and all of my ugly too.”
    • From “mi pan” to “Kulikitaka Ti,” TikTok hits can transcend language barriers and become worldwide smashes. Russian rapper Morganshtern has spent multiple weeks trending on TikTok with his song “ICE” (1.3 million creations). A hard-edged synth-driven banger, “ICE” has become a go-to song for moments when TikTok users just can’t deal with things anymore, whether they’re trying to avoid cockroaches in their houses, the pool water is too cold, or if you’re faced with an impossible choice.
    • DIY bedroom rapper 347aidan has dedicated 2020 to building an audience for his music on TikTok, promoting his singles, previewing new music, and even dueting with amateur musicians. In October, 347aidan let his fans know that he was dropping the lo-fi, keyboard-driven isolation anthem “Dancing In My Room” as his next single. Since then, the song has become one of TikTok’s top trending songs, soundtracking videos of mood-boosting pit bullsseaside adventures, and, well, dancing in a bedroom. “Dancing In My Room” even reached the ears of TikTok influencers like @bellapoarch and cartoonist @robsonlami.
    • Known for its singular scene led by Lil Uzi Vert, Philadelphia hip-hop is having a moment on TikTok with Popp Hunna’s “Adderall (Corvette Corvette).” Built around a skittering electronic-influenced instrumental and Popp’s energetic fast-raps, “Adderall” is one of the platform’s top trending songs after @yvnggprince created a viral dance challenge. With over 3.1 million video creations on TikTok total, and over 2 million in the past week, “Adderall” shows no signs of slowing down, especially after Charli D’Amelio, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, and dozens of other influencers created their own videos.

TikTok has experienced immense growth in the past year–trending songs take only days to reach numbers that TikTok’s original hits built up over months. The platform’s emphasis on community-driven virality democratizes the hit-making process. As it continues to grow, the way TikTok interacts with the broader music world grows more fascinating, minting new stars of all genres and reviving hits from all eras.

    11.7.2020

TikTok Treats, Week Of November 2nd

Mariah Carey Can’t Wait for Christmas, Luke Combs Makes a Chart Splash, and Much More

    The News:

Throughout a tumultuous 2020, TikTok has been a refuge from the outside world, providing a welcome distraction with music new and old. Below, find some interesting stories from the world of music that have made waves on TikTok in recent days:

    • This week, the calendar changed from October to November, and one particular diva was extremely excited for the start of a new season. Slowly becoming as synonymous with Christmas as Santa Claus, Mariah Carey took to TikTok to mark the official beginning of “All I Want For Christmas Is You” season. Rest assured that you’ll be hearing the song all over TikTok and everywhere else over the coming weeks.
    • Possibly the most popular pop group of the 00s, the Black Eyed Peas are making their presence felt on TikTok with their Justin Timberlake-featuring 2003 hit “Where Is The Love?” (1.3 million video creations). The song’s memorable riff has inspired a new side-stepping dance trend, fit for describing DGAF attitudes about washing dishesprocrastination on school workhalloween monster dance-offs, and more.
    • “Where Is The Love?” isn’t the only 2000s hit that’s having a moment on the platform. UK R&B duo Mary Mary’s 2007 song “Walking” (41k video creations) has become a popular meme to describe those with a reason to strut, from Power Rangers, to elementary school mean girls, to cheerful bernedoodlesNappy Roots‘ cheerful classic “Good Day” (195k creations) is also spreading positive vibes in videos about rescuing animals (cats and even elephants!) and socially-distant volleyball. And viral dance originator Soulja Boy is trending once again, as TikTok users turn to Ying Yang Twins and their 2002 anthem “Say I Yi Yi” (over 2 million creations) when they want to show off their wild sides.
    • In TikTok chart news, country star Luke Combs‘ strategy to debut audio from his song “Forever After All” (81k video creations) early on TikTok paid off in a big way. After months of organic growth after its release as a TikTok sound over the summer–and after it soundtracked one memorable wedding proposal–”Forever After All” debuted at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, generating over 29 million on-demand streams in its first week. The song also moved 52,000 sales, topping Billboard’s Digital Song Sales Chart.
    • Electronic/pop artist Stellar is the latest rising artist to score a surprise TikTok hit. On his song “Ashes” (1.6 million video creations), Stellar rides a rubbery bassline as he expresses his frustration with being trapped in a relationship with a controlling ex. After the song exploded, Stellar filmed himself telling his ex that the song he wrote about her went viral on TikTok. The video generated over 45 million views, and he recently posted a Part 2, in which he plays her his song “Blur” (which is also about her). Based on her reaction, don’t expect a Part 3.
    • Indie artist Grandson has made waves on TikTok and elsewhere with his song “Blood/Water” (179k video creations). He’s also an active user of the platform, sharing behind-the-scenes clips from his music videos, reacting to a viral dance created by @madyvivian to his song “Dirty,” and giving a history lesson about how “Blood/Water” came to be.

TikTok is an oasis of joy, a place for its community to come to relieve stress. As the app wraps up a successful year, it will continue to play a major role in its users’ lives, providing needed doses of cheer and optimism and driving the cultural conversation.
