According to TikTok’s 2020 Music Report, R&B was the third-most popular genre on the platform, only trailing hip-hop and pop. Recently, and especially during Black History Month, R&B artists have been showing appreciation for TikTok and its community. Last night, Texan Soul singer Leon Bridges hosted a LIVE stream to raise money for the Alvin Ailey Foundation on TikTok, after previewing his cover of gospel deep cut “Like A Ship” exclusively on TikTok last week. Other R&B icons, including Kelly Rowland, Ashanti, and Monica have hosted LIVE conversations with Black TikTok creators to talk about their careers and issues important to them. With plenty of love on both sides, TikTok’s love affair with R&B is in no danger of ending any time soon.

On Friday, TikTok ends Black History Month with a bang airing the TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration. Airing on Friday February 26th and hosted by Karen Civil and Challan, the TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration traces the evolution of California rap, featuring interviews and performances from iconic Cali artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Saweetie, each with a special backdrop that speaks to their West Coast roots. The 90 minute extravaganza takes the time to shine a spotlight on Black creators, offering a close look at this year’s Black TikTok Trailblazers. Tune in at 8pm ET to watch the extravaganza.

Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, and Giveon Lead TikTok’s R&B Moment

Press Release

Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, and Giveon Lead TikTok’s R&B Moment

2.24.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of February 22nd

R&B Songs by Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, Lil Tjay & 6LACK, and Others Tear Up TikTok During Black History Month

The News:

R&B has always had a special place in the hearts of TikTok users and the company itself. TikTok’s two biggest LIVE events involved R&B superstar The Weeknd and Justin Bieber’s recent Valentine’s Day performance of JOURNALS, his most R&B-influenced album. Now, the genre is having a major moment on TikTok, with multiple trending songs and a breakout star. Check out the stories below:

  • Bronx rapper Lil Tjay and R&B star 6LACK have had TikTok users across the world in their feelings with their somber breakup anthem “Calling My Phone” garnering over 95k creations on the platform. The two have become notorious for mood music on TikTok in the past year, as Lil Tjay’s Pop Smoke “Mood Swings” hit collaboration and 6LACK’s “PRBLMS” have both soared on the platform. Quite the avid TikTok users, they are now featuring music video footage as well as the story of the making of the R&B tune on their own pages. The song’s melancholic mood has inspired much creativity in the TikTok community, with some of the highlights including creators teaching lessons in loyalty and even showing off their own takes on the song, some in rather unlikely locations. The song’s TikTok success helped the song make a major commercial impact, landing a #3 debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
  • Rihanna has kept her fans waiting a while for new music,, but that hasn’t stopped more than one of her songs from reaching viral status. In recent weeks, “Pour It Up” (33.7k video creations) Rihanna’s cavernous collab with Mike WiLL Made It, made waves on the platform, inspiring users to make decadent burritos, to try little-known candies, and to make daring hair decisions. It’s more pop-facing than R&B, but Rihanna’s 2008 hit “Disturbia” is also having a viral moment (311k video creations, 78 million video views on #disturbia), with particular focus on RiRi’s spoken “what’s wrong with me?” line in the song’s intro. The sound is ideal for self-deprecating TikTok users who know they’re wrong, but are tempted to do the wrong thing anyway.
  • Brent Faiyaz already has a large and devoted fanbase, but his fans know that he has superstar potential. His new TikTok-trending single “Gravity,” featuring Tyler, The Creator and DJ Dahi, might be the song that gets him to the upper echelon of stardom. The song already has 567k video creations from users (including influencers like Loren Gray) who’ve taken to the song’s “don’t act like I’m average” hook, using it to soundtrack clips of their extraordinary skills, ranging from yo-yo excellence, to mouth-watering cooking abilities, to making custom lipstick, and even creating a Brent Faiyaz rug. The song already has over 13 million streams on Spotify and currently sits in the Top 15 of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
  • Grammy-nominated R&B rising star Giveon has TikTok in its feelings with his viral song “HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY,” which has over 115k video creations on the platform. The song has several qualities that TIkTok users generally enjoy, including “ethereal” vibes, pitch-manipulated vocals, and a clearly communicated message. “HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY” is the ideal backing music for hating Valentine’s Day, vibing at a coral beach, or just admiring Giveon’s golden pipes. The deeply emotional and cathartic song is currently in the Top 10 of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 and at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Giveon’s first entry as a lead artist), but it’s important to remember that a sad song is no substitute for therapy.
  • It isn’t just established R&B stars who make noise on TikTok–the platform is helping young artists like Reyanna Maria rise to prominence. Reyanna built an audience on TikTok by engaging with other users on the platform, making her own beats and covering songs by Ariana GrandeSummer WalkerSZA, and Billie Eilish. Reyanna had a major breakthrough in December when she duetted a beat by @katoproducer with a calm and confident rap verse, earning over 2 million views. After clamoring from followers and fans, Reyanna made the audio into a TikTok sound (1.4 million video creations), and eventually a full song called “So Pretty.” Reyanna Maria’s success with “So Pretty” led to a record deal with Republic Records, and earlier this week, “So Pretty” earned a verse from Tyga for the official remix.

White John Investigates His Lone Wolf Tendencies In “By Yourself” Video

  • Press Release

White John Investigates His Lone Wolf Tendencies In “By Yourself” Video

    2.24.2021

Video: White John – “By Yourself

The Inglewood Rapper Can Only Rely On Himself In the Latest Video from His Cases Still Pending EP

    Critical Praise:

“Where did White John come from? Did he drop from the sky? Was he created in a lab? We’ll never know. Regardless, the Inglewood rapper has quickly become a must-know name on the West Coast.” – Pitchfork

“The self-proclaimed ‘Mr. F*ck LAPD,’ John has a swagger undoubtedly forged by moving in Piru sections of the city. If he continues to improve at this rate, he might be next up far beyond Inglewood.” – SPIN

“Everybody in LA loves White John. He’s from Inglewood. He grew up down the street. He went to Westchester High. He’s always been around everybody. He should’ve been rapping, but he was into living the fast life. Everything he be talking about is real sh*t. LAPD really does hate his ass.” – Rucci, to The FADER

    The Video:

Building a reputation with his rock-solid flow and outsized persona, White John worked hard for everything he has. Proudly practicing the art of self-reliance, the rapper also known as Mr. F*ck The LAPD shares By Yourself,” his latest music video. Blessed with a bass-heavy instrumental from Ace The Face, “By Yourself” is a propulsive and emotionally complex bit of Cali fire. The song is packed with White John’s trademark in-your-face aggression (“Second of all, f*ck the opps and they dead homies”), but it also speaks to the loneliness and pain that fuels John’s me-against-the-world attitude: “Ion even talk to my moms/Ion even think she’d care if I was gone.” In the video, directed by the White Gurb’s frequent collaborator Mr.RealMovie, John stalks the streets of Inglewood in a bunny-eared hoodie, showing off the otherworldly confidence required to get by in his neighborhood by his lonely. “By Yourself” is the latest video from Cases Still Pending, John’s recently released EP.

Painting a picture of his chaotic and cinematic life, Cases Still Pending proves why White Johnis one of L.A.’s most colorful rap characters. Wielding a laid-back, yet insistent flow, John sits firmly in the pocket of the propulsive West Coast production, crafted by the likes of scene sound architects like Beat Boy and Ace The Face, alternating outlandish flexes and hedonistic odes to the turn-up lifestyle with sober reflections on the realities of street life. Cases Still Pending is home to previous video singles including the OMB Peezy-featuring Dead Homies (250k views) and the trippy I Need Drugs” (228k views), featuring an appearance from White John’s Inglewood associate Rucci. The sequel to last year’s Cases Pending EP, home to the rapper’s street hit Crazy,” Cases Still Pending is available now on all platforms.

Respected in his hometown for his unapologetic realness and fluency with slang, White John rose to local hero status in L.A. in 2020. He caught the attention of his city with songs like Crazy” and Road Runnin’,” racking up hundreds of thousands of streams on YouTube and Spotify. He’s been praised by the likes of Pitchfork and SPIN, and collaborated with Fenix FlexinLil House Phone, and many others in the L.A. scene. Look for White John to make much more noise as 2021 moves along.

Oakland’s Rising Star Laney Keyz Bares His Soul In New Video

  • Press Release

Oakland’s Rising Star Laney Keyz Bares His Soul In New Video

    2.23.2021

    Video: Laney Keyz – Famous

The Emerging Rapper Documents His Fears, Loyalties, Imperfections, and How High the Stakes Are

    Critical Praise:

“With raw talent, and against the backdrop of a pandemic, Laney Keyz looks poised to jump straight from aspiring musician to full-blown star.” – SF Weekly

“Laney’s music comes from a place of support, combining infectious hooks and a delivery that reels listeners in like a prize catch.”  – DJ Booth

“Inspired greatly by Meek Mill, his music is a combination of melodic R&B and hardcore hip-hop.” – FLAUNT

“Keyz’s music is melodic and heartfelt, his three singles bouncy enough for the club but introspective enough for a late-night drive. ‘Colorful Sh*t’ is succinct and snappy, enough so that it unexpectedly caught the attention of Lil Yachty. “ – PopDust

    The Video:

Primed to be the Bay’s next to blow, Laney Keyz reveals more about his upbringing and background growing up in East Oakland than he ever has. Although he’s lived a life full of both hardships and beauty, both mistakes and triumphs, Laney strives for more than the circumstances he was dealt and his new song, “Famous” reflects that. In essence, he cares less about being famous than he does making it out the hood. The pressures of becoming famous are inconsequential to the pressures of surviving the streets and armed with that experiential knowledge, Laney is destined for success.

Flashing his melodic bars on the psychedelic, stuttering 808 beat, the visual for “Famous” delivers fluttering, kaleidoscopic glimpses into the East Oakland native’s old stomping grounds. The graffiti-covered walls and night-ridden streets provide the backdrop for his angst as he candidly details the increasing anxiety behind his transition from a troubled childhood to rising fame. Packed with local references that any East Bay kid would understand, “Famous” reveals his origin story, documenting his his fears, his loyalties, his imperfections, his days spent at Santa Rita county jail, and how he’d love to go back home to Oakland but knows he’s better off if he stays in his new home of LA. “Famous” is the follow-up to “360,” Laney’s high-octane Lil Keed collaboration.

Born and raised in East Oakland, Laney Keyz named himself after Laney College, a local community college, symbolizing his desire to better himself and triumph over street life. Although he’s lived a life full of hardships in Oakland, he strives for more and his music reflects that. Laney started his music career behind the scenes, making ends meet as an audio engineer before starting to write songs for some notable West Coast artists. After years of working on his craft, the rapper started to release music of his own in Summer 2020, gathering buzz with loose singles and by recording his own freestyles over popular beats, including Travis Scott’s “FRANCHISE” and DaBaby’s “Blind.” Laney Keyz made noise earlier this year with the globe-trotting Russia,” the flossy trap ballad Knockout,” Colorful Sh*t,” which features an appearance from Lil Yachty, and most recently, “360,” Laney’s high-octane collaboration with Lil Keed.

    The Background:

    Laney Keyz Background:

Laney Keyz is a slick-talking, smooth, melody-making lyricist on the verge of becoming a household name so early in his career. At just 23 years old, with a smaller discography than most under his belt, Laney Keyz has found a way to reach a subset of rap fans who’ve immediately clung to his music, image, and aesthetic, in ways that artists who’ve been in the industry for triple the time that he has haven’t been able to. He’s a prodigy with an inspiring story for anyone looking to pursue their dreams.

    The Background:

Pressa captured rap fans’ attention in Canada and the U.K. by garnering millions of YouTube views for 2016’s “Wass Gang,” landed on a tour with Drake, and emerged as a local cultural sensation. Pressa made his mark with the inimitable mix of his street-oriented lyrics, melodic hooks and high-pitched voice, making him a fixture in the Toronto hip-hop scene.

Recognized for an impressive list of collaborations (Murda Beatz, UK hip-hop don, Giggs, Lil Uzi Vert) over the years, the Canadian rapper continued his hot streak in 2020 with features from Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, Jackboy, Flipp Dinero and more. Aligned with the new crop of artists dubbed “ones to watch,” Pressa is on track in his journey to becoming a household name.

No stranger to releasing full bodies of work with mixtapes such as, Press MachinePress A Brick, and Prestige, 2020 was a prime display of Pressa’s growth and versatility as an artist, culminating with the release of his EP, Gardner Express. The EP features “OTM,” “96 Freestyle,” and “Head Tap” ft. Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, which resulted in coverage from media juggernauts like Complex, a global Apple Music Beats 1 premiere with Ebro Darden.

Pressa is applying a renewed vigor to his music and collaborating with likeminded writers, producers and artists on the rise. Inspired by the diverse streets of Toronto and a multicultural Jamaican/Filipino upbringing, Pressa is eager to share his passion and unique music style with the world.

Case Closed: Young Dolph & Key Glock Are Trap’s Best Duo

    2.19.2021

Audio: Young Dolph & Key Glock – “Case Closed”

The Two Paper Route EMPIRE Rappers Bring Their Best Bars for a Flex-Heavy, Bandplay-Produced Anthem

    The Song:

Bouncing boss-life bars off one another with palpable chemistry, Young Dolph and Key Glock are a truly dynamic duo. Coming together with a series of escalating flexes, Dolph & Glock share Case Closed,” a new single. Produced by Paper Route EMPIRE‘s own Bandplay, who combines haunting vox synths with a boss-battle bassline and ominous keys, Dolph and Glock present an irrefutable argument that nobody can rack up or spend bands in the way that they can: “I put VS stones in my glasses/Stuffed a quarter mil in 20s in a mattress/It used to be who get the bomb off the fastest/Now a n**** make millions of ad-libs (yeah yeah!),” intones Dolph. Though they can’t help but boast about their ends, they never forget the circumstances from which they emerged: “Went from sleeping on the floor/Now my jewelry box froze,” rhymes Dolph in the song’s hook. “Case Closed” is the second collab of the year from the Dum & Dummer duo, following Green Light, a highlight single from Dolph’s Rich Slave (Deluxe) album.

The two Paper Route EMPIRE heavy hitters are preparing for a massive 2021. Dolph has already had a busy year, releasing the deluxe version of his Billboard Top 5-charting Rich Slave album, featuring 8 new tracks like the bombastic single. Large Amounts,” the luxury life anthem “Fast” (“I’ve got a billion dollar future, f*ck yesterday and the past,” asserts Dolph) and the simmering “Buy My Way To Heaven.” Key Glock, meanwhile, racked up 2.6 million views on his flashy video for Off The Porch,” to go along with 1.1 million Spotify streams. Key Glock and Young Dolph connected in 2019 for Dum & Dummer, a full-length collaborative project. Peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200, Dum & Dummer was a deluxe-sized showcase for the duo’s inimitable chemistry and unparalleled flexes. Dum & Dummer inspired a successful joint tour, during which Dolph & Glock sold over 43,000 tickets and sold out shows in multiple markets.

Stay tuned for updates from Paper Route EMPIRE about imminent Young Dolph and Key Glock releases.

Taleban Dooda Shares “No Eater,” A Candy-Coated Trap Banger

  • Press Release

Taleban Dooda Shares “No Eater,” A Candy-Coated Trap Banger

    2.19.2021

Video: Taleban Dooda – “No Eater

The Tampa Native 18-Year-Old Can’t Be Locked Down In His Latest Standout Music Video

    Critical Praise:

“At only 18 years old.. his talents are already overly abundant and his potential is probably higher than most up and coming artists you could name off the top of your head.” – Lyrical Lemonade

“He falls into the lane of melodic street rap that acts like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Durk, Teejay3k, and others are making, but his high-pitched vocals and limitless subject matter set him apart.” – Earmilk

    The Video:

Taleban Dooda captivates with his elastic melodies and pure, piercing tenor. With his new video single “No Eater,” Dooda demonstrates the fluid and playful cadences that have him rapidly rising in Florida and beyond. Bouncing atop a dancing guitar lick courtesy of producers Ayo Bleu (Lil Durk, NBA YoungBoy), MalikOTB (Rod Wave, Lil Durk), and Monique Winning (NLE Choppa, Jackboy), Taleban embraces his womanizing ways, but assures the opps that his luck with the ladies does not make him soft.

In the video, directed by Jolo, Dooda hosts a wild pool party, welcoming his homies and a bevy of baddies for an R-Rated afternoon. Released as Dooda celebrates a Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl, “No Eater” follows the recent T9ine collab “Chosen,” a gospel-influenced anthem that earned praise from Pitchfork and HipHopDX (who named the song one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2021 So Far) and already has over 1 million streams across platforms. “No Eater” is available on all platforms via Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records.

Though Taleban Dooda only started rapping at the age of 15, the Tampa, FL native displayed a natural melodic ability that helps him stand out in a burgeoning Florida street rap scene. After working hard behind the scenes to build a backlog of bangers and gain inroads in his home state, Dooda scored a hit with “Tru Colors,” his first-ever release, racking up over 3 million streams, generating over 1.2 million views on its YouTube video, and reaching #18 on SoundCloud’s worldwide New & Hot chart. The teenager kept the momentum going with collaborations with his frequent rap partner Rees Money, and successful video singles like “2 In Da Morning” (1 million views) and “Dis Dooda,” which Vice named as one of the 24 Best Songs of September. Stay tuned for much more from the Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records signee, who is currently featured on the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Hip Hop playlist, as he continues to develop into one of the South’s most exciting rap talents.

    The Background:

Taleban Dooda always had a voice–a combination of distinctly Floridian style and irresistibly catchy melody, has made the 18-year-old rapper one of the most exciting new rap voices coming out of the South. Hailing from East Tampa, Dooda had few options to avoid the violence that lurked outside his door. When he injured his knee in his 9th grade year, ending his football dreams, Dooda turned his attention to music. He began by recording himself covering other people’s songs — inspired by his love for artists like Bruno Mars, John Legend, and Sam Smith — before moving on to his own original compositions. Influenced by artists like NBA Youngboy, Polo G, and NoCap, Taleban Dooda decided to become a rapper.

For Dooda, 2020 was all about consistency, as he continued to drop a steady stream of strong singles throughout the year. In September, he released “Dis Dooda” — which VICE named one of the best songs of the month and Lyrical Lemonade highlighted on their site — and followed that up in November with the TM88 and ATL Jacob-produced “Finish Him.” Now, Dooda has his eyes set on the upcoming release of his debut album. With all this momentum, and all of Florida behind him, he doesn’t plan to slow down any time soon. “I’m just trying to keep dropping music,” he says. “I ain’t trying to take no breaks.”

  • Press Release

Curren$y Announces 2/26 ‘Collection Agency’ Project, Shares “Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs

    2.19.2021

Rap Icon Curren$y Announces Collection Agency, His Upcoming Project, Arriving February 26th via Jet Life/EMPIRE

The Jet Life CEO Releases Hazy New Single “Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs

The Prolific Emcee Flashes His Slick Lyricism On His Upcoming 10-Track Project, Which Features Larry June and Production from Harry Fraud, DjFresh, and More

    Critical Praise:

“Curren$y is still capable of rapping something so simple it’ll make you wonder how no one has rapped it already” – Pitchfork

“Curren$y’s sharpened pen and deft wordplay will quiet the doubters. His influence was evident then, and it’s irrefutable now.” – Rolling Stone

    The Announcement:

Known for his prolific output and exquisite taste, Curren$y is one of rap music’s hardest workers. Preparing the newest project in his remarkable–and remarkably consistent–career, Spitta announces Collection Agency, an upcoming 10-track tape. Packed with the hazy production and detailed luxury life rhymes that have been thrilling Curren$y fans for over a decade, Collection Agency finds the New Orleans native in his bag, spinning witticisms about his triplet passions of women, weed, and muscle cars. Collection Agency boasts sleek and sumptuous sonic palette, reflecting the smooth sensibility of Curren$y’s beloved ’80s electro-funk and R&B. Highlights from the tape include “I Don’t Call,” in which the rapper brags about getting bands in a pandemic, the late-night saxophone-drenched “Jermaine Dupri,” and “Shout Out, which features Curren$y’s kindred spirit Larry June. With production from Harry FraudDj.fresh, Jet Lifer Trauma Tone, and more, Collection Agency arrives on February 26th via Jet Life Recordings/EMPIRE.

Along with the pre-order of Collection Agency, Curren$y officially releases his new single Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs. With an evocative title that proves Spitta’s unparalleled ability to paint a picture with his words, the Trauma Tone-produced “Kush Through The Sunroof” finds the rapper reminiscing on his come-up, noting that he worked hard to build the loyal fanbase and strong business that he has: “Real walker in the game/But first I had to crawl in it/Buckle down, did my thing, the game brought out the dog in me/The way I look at it, they all enemies/I took it back to my old energy.” In the video, shot and edited by Yusef Pozo, a chain-adorned Spitta kicks back with a beautiful woman to watch car showcase videos and listen to records (most notably, Marvin Gaye’s classic What’s Going On). “Kush Through The Sunroof” followed-up Misty,” the Collection Agency closing track, which hit the internet earlier this month.

Collection Agency is set to be Curren$y’s first new project of 2021, following a yet another busy year for the veteran rapper. In 2020, the uncountably prolific rapper released 4 full-length projects and multiple EPs, each with a different set of collaborators. He kicked off the year with The Tonite Show With Curren$y, an entry into Dj.fresh’s renowned series of mixtapes, before keeping the momentum up with the Cardo Got Wingz-produced Green Tape EP,Smokin’ Potnas, a collaborative effort with his Jet Life associate Fendi P, and Spring Clean, a 10-track project with 808 Mafia producer Fuse. The second half of 2020 brought TheOutRunners, a Harry Fraud-produced effort that earned coverage from Consequence Of SoundHYPEBEASTREVOLT,  and more. The Jet Life CEO ended the year with Welcome To Jet Life Recordingsa label showcase that featured contributions from signees like T.Y.Black Cobain, and more.

Justin Bieber’s Valentine’s Day TikTok Livestream Draws Over 4 Million Unique Viewers

    The Announcement:

This Valentine’s Day, superstar singer Justin Bieber teamed up with TikTok for “Journals live from the drew house,” a full-length LIVE performance. TikTok’s first-ever full-length single-artist LIVE performance,  #JournalsLive was a massive success, drawing over 4 million unique views over two broadcasts, making it the most-viewed single-artist livestream in TikTok history!

“Journals Live from the drew house” was a special moment for TikTok, but also for Justin, as it marked his first-ever performance of songs from his fan-favorite 2013 album JOURNALS. The buzz surrounding the Valentine’s Day performance caused a resurgence in the popularity of the album, ushering  JOURNALS past the 3 billion all-time streams landmark. Project highlights “All That Matters” and “Heartbreaker” reached charts in multiple countries, and the buzz surrounding the performance had a rising tide effect on the rest of the artist’s catalog–Bieber’s newest single “Anyone” ascended to the #1 spot on iTunes over the weekend.

With over 20.3 million followers–a 700k increase since the announcement of #JournalsLive–Justin Bieber is an active member of the TikTok community, using his account to reveal behind-the-scenes footage, partake in the latest trends, and more. His first-ever TikTok, which included a snippet of his hit song “Yummy” (which was a big TikTok hit with over 5 million video creations) generated over 117 million views. Justin declared his devotion to his wife Hailey with a stylish video soundtracked by his single “Anyone.” Justin is currently trending worldwide with his benny blanco collab “Lonely,” which has over 872k video creations and more than 5 billion video views.

After closing out 2020 with three smash singles — “Holy,” with Chance The Rapper, “Lonely” with benny blanco, and “Monster” with Shawn Mendes — Justin Bieber rang in the new year with a brand new single “Anyone,” and his return to the live stage in a blow-out NYE livestreamed concert. Justin continues to reign as one of the biggest artists in the world: the #1 artist on YouTube with 60+ million subscribers, the #2 artist on Spotify global with over 65 million monthly listeners, over 200 million in combined U.S. radio audience per week, three tracks in the Billboard Top 40, and three Grammy nominations and an American Music Award for his 2020 album Changes.

T-Pain, Hyperpop, and Anti-Valentine’s Anthems Take TikTok By Storm

  • Press Release

T-Pain, Hyperpop, and Anti-Valentine’s Anthems Take TikTok By Storm

    2.18.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of February 15th

    The News:

TikTok is a place where superstars of the past and present rub shoulders with emerging artists and the internet’s wildest memes. It seems as if that kind of variety should cause whiplash, but in the context of TikTok, these disparate artists and musical styles make a certain kind of sense. The platform’s emphasis on authentic creative expression ensures that each creator will bring a unique twist to a song or trend. Check out some of the songs, trends, and artists TikTok is vibing with at the moment:

    • Rap/R&B maestro T-Pain has made himself at home on TikTok, populating his page with highlights from his illustrious career. Earlier this year, T-Pain had a minor viral moment, when a clip of him and Slim Jxmmy of Rae Sremmurd live reacting to the song “Feet Pic” by MrSunChips racked up over 2 million views. T-Pain is going viral once again on the app this week with his 2014 DJ Mustard-produced banger “Up Down (Do This All Day). Powered by a dance created by @itsromebaby (which T-Pain acknowledged on his own page), “Up Down” is one of the top trending songs on the app, with over 380k video creations.
    • Rapper King Von tragically passed away in November, but he left behind a legion of loyal fans. The Chicago native was known for his gripping storytelling , and now a particularly dramatic moment in his song “Twin Nem” ft. Lil Durk is a trending sound on TikTok. The rhythmic grunts and call-and-response between Von & Durk provides a perfect prompt for sketch comedy, useful for anyone who’s too busy vibing to worry about being embarrassed. With over 115k video creations, “Twin Nem” has been used to soundtrack overzealous cousins at a family reunion, Andy’s toys coming to life in Toy Story, and the relatable moment when you forget you’ve muted yourself on video chat.
    • Plenty of TikTok users were feeling the love during Valentine’s Day week, as songs like The Fray’s “How To Save A Life” and Edith Whiskers’ cover of Edward Sharpe’s “Home” each earning an uptick in video creations. While the happily attached TikTok users chose a variety of songs to express their love, the single and unsentimental users decided on a single anthem–“F*cc Valentines” by Honcho Moonk. With over 298k video creations, many of which from the past week, “F*cc Valentines” allowed the anti-V-Day contingent to send a forceful and angry message, whether they were taking their anger out at the Valentine’s section of a store, bemoaning the deluge of lovey-dovey social media posts, or, like Oneya from @angryreactions, just feeling the anti-love vibes.
    • Combining glitchy electronic sounds and manipulated vocals with pop-friendly choruses, the nascent genre of hyperpop is rapidly growing in popularity on TikTok. 16-year-old artist ElyOtto’s appropriately-titled song “SugarCrash” is the latest hyperpop banger tearing up TikTok. Anticipated ever since ElyOtto shared a snippet in August, “SugarCrash” has more than 35k video creations on TikTok, partially inspired by an editing trend that juxtaposes the bright sonics of the song with a scary or awkward moment, or highlights a strange scene from an anime. The song’s TikTok success is reverberating in the real world–”SugarCrash” has over 10 million streams on Spotify, and recently reached the #1 spot on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
    • TikTok is often a channel for expressing joy, but sometimes, you just need to scream your head off. Rising British club music star Shygirl’s song “UCKERS” (62k video creations) is the perfect soundtrack for that catharsis. At the start of the song, a series of blood-curdling screams give way to a syncopated beat, and TikTok users have used that transition to explore the benefits of healthy eating, show off creative Zoom still images, or to document a transformation of appearance.
    • Amidst all the bizarre trends and superstar stories that populate TikTok, the platform’s bread and butter is still providing a platform for emerging artists to find their audience. One such rising star is Leyla Blue, a singer-songwriter from New York City. When she created her TikTok account in November, Leyla had zero followers, but by posting every day–sharing her new and old songs, performing covers of songs by artists like Amy Winehouse, or just feeling a vibe–she’s built a following of over 90k. The Island Records-signed artist built much of her momentum with her sultry anthem “What A Shame,” which eventually surpassed 100k creations on TikTok. Leyla recently posted a video enthusiastically explaining how her TikTok followers helped “What A Shame” grow into a hit on Spotify, and to show that even seemingly out-of-nowhere TikTok hits are the product of hard work, not pure luck. Leyla has recently been using the app to promote “Gasoline,” her upcoming single.

All throughout February, TikTok celebrated Black History Month by honoring Black music with themed playlist, LIVE streams with artists like Kelly Rowland and Monica, and deep dives into music history with @songpsych. Today, TikTok announced even more Black History Month initiatives, including commissioned songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA, and TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration, a Black History Month finale event with performances from Snoop Dogg, Saweetie, and more. • Press Release

Leon Bridges, KAYTRANADA & more help TikTok honor Black music during BHM

    2.16.2021

Leon Bridges, KAYTRANADA, & more help TikTok honor Black music

    The Announcement:

No celebration of Black History Month is complete without a salute to the Black artists who shape the past, present, and future of American music. To pay special tribute to the Black community this month, TikTok shines a spotlight on Black music on and off the platform, creating themed playlists to celebrate Black music’s past, present, future & joy, hosting LIVE conversations and performances with Black artists, teaming with @SongPsych to delve into the history of Black music, and, in a first for TikTok, teaming with two of our favorite artists to commission two original songs!

“TikTok has become an incubator for Black creatives of all disciplines, and our goal is to make the playing field equitable for all. We’re excited to work with artists and creators like SongPsych to amplify the pillars of the past, present, future, and joy of Black music,” says Brandon Holman, Label Partnerships Manager at TikTok.  “I’m also really proud of our new program, TikTok for Black Creatives, and that we are focused on continuing to show our dedication to Black creators’ and artists’ advancement every month of the year.”

Original Songs by Leon Bridges & KAYTRANADA

Known for his golden voice and songwriting, Grammy Award winning R&B artist Leon Bridges is the perfect figure to provide a modern window into Black music’s illustrious past. For Black History Month, Leon connects with fellow Fort Worth resident Keite Young to premiere an impassioned cover of “Like A Ship,” a beloved under-heard 1971 gospel/soul hybrid gem by Pastor T.L. Barrett. Marked by ecstatic choirs and swelling organ, Leon’s version of “Like A Ship” is both a faithful interpretation of the original and of a piece with the rest of Leon’s R&B catalogue, illustrating how Black music’s spiritual roots continue to permeate popular culture.

A producer and artist who bubbled up from the Montreal electronic music underground, KAYTRANADA lives on the cutting edge. TikTok and KAYTRANADA are proud to premiere “Caution,” a brand new original song that seamlessly blends funk, disco, and house into a futuristic mix. Layering syncopated kicks, splashy snares, and energetic vocal samples, “Caution” explores another hotspot of Black music innovation: the block party.

Together, the two songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA point to an illustrious history of Black music, while paving a path forward for both traditional and boundary-pushing sounds. Both songs will be available first as TikTok sounds, and will be released to DSPs soon.

    Your Favorite Artists LIVE

During Black History Month, we’ve made it our mission to amplify Black voices. We’ve exclusively invited Black artists to host “Sound-Off In The Comments” interactive livestreams. In the past two weeks, we’ve aired LIVE conversations with R&B icons Ashanti and Monica. Ashanti chatted with TikTok creator and activist Jax James to talk about her career and the history of R&B music. Last week, Monica and TikTok creator and LGBTQ activist Ve’ondre Mitchell shared their skincare and haircare routines and discussed the progression of Black people in the beauty industry. Last night, Kelly Rowland hosted a LIVE conversation with with TikTok trailblazer and real estate queen @quenwilliams, celebrating the legacy Kelly has created, her influence in paving the way for so many young artist and black women, and all of the exciting things the Black community can and will accomplish.

We’ve also seen “Sound-Offs” from rising artists like Erica Banks, Coi Leray, Amorphous, and Ayzha Nyree. Stay tuned for many more livestreams, from Leon Bridges and more.

    Black Music History with @SongPsych

SongPsych is a new media brand that started on TikTok as part of the Creative Learning Fund in May 2020. Since then, SongPsych has grown to over 650K followers thanks to their unique voice and detailed explainers into all elements of music theory and the music industry. This month, we’ve enlisted @SongPsych to help us delve deeper into our favorite Black music, offering deep dives into genres (including lesser-known sub-genres of hip-hop), lists of songs that sample Black music icons, explorations of the music theory behind common Black musical techniques, and more. @SongPsych, and its intrepid host @dev_lemons, conducted interviews with renowned artists like Jon Batiste, Mario, Tierra Whack, Yung Baby Tate, and more

    Themed Playlists

From ragtime and jazz to disco and house to hip-hop and R&B, Black music never ceases to push the culture forward. To honor the history of Black music, our music team put together “Make Black Music,” a series of themed playlists that highlight a particular genre, era, or quality that makes Black music special. As the month progresses, the theme of the playlists shift from past (playlists highlighting Motown, rap classics, rock ‘n roll origins, and more), to present (featuring hip-hop hits, pop icons, and Afrobeats), to a glimpse of the future (house & electronic, hip-hop newcomers, future soul). The month concludes with a series of playlists celebrating the Joy of Black music. The “Make Black Music” playlists can be found on the “Discover” page and on the “Sounds” page.

TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration

TikTok’s month-long celebration ends on a high note by celebrating artists that represent the past, present, and future of West Coast Hip Hop. Airing on Friday February 26th at 8pm ET and hosted by Karen Civil and ChallanTikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration traces the evolution of California rap, featuring interviews and performances from iconic Cali artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Saweetie, each with a special backdrop that speaks to their West Coast roots. The 90 minute extravaganza takes the time to shine a spotlight on Black creators, offering a close look at this year’s Black TikTok Trailblazers.

    Community Support

There is no denying the cultural impact Black artists have had on TikTok and we are determined to continue to elevate the community. In addition to donating to trailblazing organizations like the Alvin Ailey Foundation (find the full details of TikTok’s Black History Month giving in its kickoff blog post), we’re continuing to develop our “TikTok for Black Creatives” incubator program, nurturing and developing 100 talented Black creators and music artists, helping to open doors for them to reach new heights in their careers.

We’re excited to continue honoring and supporting Black musicians on and off the platform this month and beyond. Follow along with #MakeBlackHistory as we celebrate Black musicians’ contributions to our platform and the culture at large.

  • Press Release

Smokepurpp Poses For Prom Pics in His New Video

    02.11.2021

    Video: Smokepurpp – “Prom Queen”

The Florida Rapper Has His Pick of Prom Dates in the Latest Video From His New Psycho (Legally Insane) EP

    Critical Praise:

    XXL Class of 2018 Freshman

“Purpp has caught the ears of everyone from The Weeknd and D.R.A.M. to Chief Keef and Travis Scott, and the 19-year-old rapper is in position for a rapid ascent” – Pigeons & Planes

“If you’ve not been following along, the rise of young Miami rapper SmokePurrp – alongside that of his longtime pal and collaborator Lil Pump – has been one of the more exciting rides in rap’s underground this year” – Noisey

“Out of all the SoundCloud and Florida rappers that have gained floods of attention and acclaim in recent years, Smokepurpp has stood as one of the movement’s strongest proponents and artists. – HYPEBEAST

    The Video:

Serving up lightning quick bangers about his hard-living lifestyle, Smokepurpp knows how to party. More than happy to play the role of “bad influence,” Smokepurpp shares “Prom Queen,” his latest video. Using the same Wendy Rene sample made famous by the Wu-Tang Clan in “Tearz,” “Prom Queen” is an irreverent and addictive update on that song for the trap era. Switching up between clipped cadences and bursts of rapidfire syllables, Purpp flexes on his bankroll and his unique social position in high school: “I was selling acid to the prom queen.” Directed by AllTheSmoke, the video expands upon that line from the song’s hook, as a tuxedoed Purpp poses for prom pics with some baddies before joining them on the dancefloor. “Prom Queen” is the second video from Purpp’s brand new Psycho (Legally Insane) EP, following last week’s video for “We Outside” ft. Lil Mosey.

Taking inspiration from the rebellious debauchery of rock star icons like GG Allin and Ozzy Osbourne, Psycho (Legally Insane) finds Purpp experimenting with new flows and an eclectic mix of instrumentals. While some tracks nod towards hip-hop history, like the Memphis-style horrorcore of  “Tic Tac, recent single “We Outside” ft. Lil Moseywhich earned coverage in Complex and more, uses a guitar lick that resembles Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Rockstar” allows Purpp to expand his melodic arsenal. Titled after an urban legend about those who’ve taken more than seven doses in their lifetime (a total Purpp has long surpassed) and with album artwork that pays tribute to Ozzy, Psycho (Legally Insane) EP is available on all platforms via Alamo Records.

In 2020, Smokepurpp returned to his roots with Florida Jit, his high-energy full-length project. Populated with instrumentals from Ronny JEarl On The Beat (City Girls, Lil Yachty), CBMIX (Lil Pump, Juice WRLD, Kanye West), and Purpp himself, the project is home to successful singles like Off My Chest” ft. Lil Pump and “Tide Pen” ft. Jack Harlow-The young artist also earned his first Grammy nomination last year, which he received for his contribution to “Costa Rica,” the Gold-certified track from Revenge Of The Dreamers IIIand racked up over 40 million streams on YouTube and Spotify with his guest spot on KSI‘s “Poppin.”

Purpp’s Psycho (Legally Insane) EP is an important step for the artist, who’s ready to raise his game in 2021. Stay tuned for much more music from the former XXL Freshman to come this year, including Bless Yo Trap 2, a sequel to his 2018 collaborative album with Murda Beatz.

    The Background:

The Chicago-born, Miami-raised rapper and producer Smokepurpp has been one of the cornerstones of Florida’s burgeoning rap scene since the release of his “Ski Mask” video in 2015. The buzz from the video and other singles with close friend Lil Pump culminated in a record deal with Alamo/Interscope Records and Travis Scott’s Cactus Jack Records. The 21-year old Purpp quickly went to work, collaborating with Scott, Yo Gotti, Pump, and more. His debut release, Deadstar, spawned the gold-certified single “Audi” and generated features from The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Pigeons & Planes, XXL, Mass Appeal, and many more. The follow up release, Bless Yo Trap, was a collaboration with Grammy-nominated producer Murda Beatz, boasted the standout single “123” and collaborations with Lil YachtyOffset, and A$AP Ferg. 2018 has been a banner year for Purpp so far, thanks to his selection on the 2018 XXL Freshman list, the release of “Nephew,” his Gold-certified collaboration with Lil Pump, which has over 100M streams across all platforms, and “I Love It,” the Kanye West and Pump collaboration which Purpp co-wrote and debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100. After delighting his fans with the Lost Planet EP in April, Purpp closed 2020 out with the highly-anticipated Deadstar 2. In 2020, Purpp released his latest project Florida Jit, with appearances from Lil Pump, Denzel Curry, and more.

Cardi Goes Up, Uzi Goes Down (to Sleep), and More TikTok Stories

    2.10.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of February 8th

Cardi Drops a New Song, Jessie J Does the #DominoChallenge, and Everything’s An Album Cover

    The News:

TikTok’s emphasis on authentic creative expression makes the platform an oasis for music lovers and artists alike. The app’s myriad viral trends each come with their own sonic signature, helping elevate songs and artists into new (or resurgent) levels of recognition. Below, take a look at some of the artists and songs that the TikTok community is connecting with–and elevating–at the moment:

    • No stranger to hits and TikTok stardom, Cardi B is set for another takeover with her new single “Up” already making waves on the platform. Her first single since the record-breaking collaboration “WAP” with fellow rapper and beloved TikTok star Megan Thee Stallion, “Up” has garnered over 21k video creations and millions of views on TikTok since its Friday release. Makeup gurusimpressive drummers, and TikTok-favorite Jason Derulo have already joined in to showcase their various talents with this trendy track. Inspired by the creative community, Cardi has been highlighting her favorite dances and uses of the song on her own page, and some creative, if unhygienic, users have adopted “Up” for the M&M Roll Challenge.
    • Some TikTok songs catch on because of an instrumental hook, some ride to popularity on the back of a lyrical phrase, but Lil Uzi Vert’s 2017 song “Two®” is currently trending for a song-opening skit: “Uzi? Uzi? Not again! Uzi, wake your *ss up!” With over 320k video creations on the song, nearly all of them created in the past week, “Two®” inspired TikTok to send a message to sleepyheads everywhere, including hairless catshockey players, and social media-savvy chickens. After encountering Uzi at the Super Bowl, one enterprising TikTok user convinced Uzi himself to hop on the trend.
    • ’00s adult-contemporary is having a serious moment on TikTok–last week Hoobastank returned to the public eye with a trend, and this week, it’s The Fray’s turn. Long a favorite of music supervisors for its plaintive piano and powerful emotions, “How To Save A Life” (81k video creations) and its chorus lyric “where did I go wrong?”, has become TikTok’s go-to soundtrack for unexpected life developments. The song’s melodrama is ripe for parody: users take the “where did I go wrong” prompt and apply them to choosing a spouse who’s susceptible to brain freezes, feeding a mom’s gossip addiction, or marveling at a child’s intense anime obsession.
    • The past week has been a busy one on TikTok for British singer Jessie J. Her hit song “Domino” is having a major moment, with over 850k video creations on its audio after inspiring the #DominoChallenge (195 million video views). The #challenge involves an intricate, intertwining couples dance, requiring complicated, coordinated twirls. Jessie J got in on the action on her own page, throwing on her old outfit from the song’s video and posting three different #DominoChallenge videos and racking up over 32 million video views.
    • Jax is one of TikTok’s most creative rising musicians, using her platform to post parody songs that provide an unseen perspective on classics. It turns out, when you look at “Jessie’s Girl” from Jessie’s perspective, Rick Springfield’s character seems like a bit of a creep! In some of her other videos, she exposes Olivia Rodrigo for her irresponsible driving, gives a terrible Yelp review for the “Hotel California,” and proves that the relationship detailed in Avril Lavigne’s “Sk8ter Boi” wasn’t built to last. In recent weeks, Jax has been showing off some of her original songs, including “Ring Pop,” which have the same verve and sense of humor as her parodies. Last week, Jax updated the lyrics to Ariana Grande’s “7 Rings” to reflect Tom Brady’s quest for Super Bowl glory, and celebrated signing a record deal with Atlantic by writing an original song that details her origin story.
    • There’s nothing the TikTok community appreciates more than #aesthetic, and what communicates an aesthetic better than an album cover? Under the hashtag #albumcover (847m video views), , TikTok users create their own album artwork out of old photos or videos, or scenes from their favorite sitcom. The trend is often soundtracked by a user-made mashup of Kendrick Lamar’s “HiiPower” and Kanye West’s “Devil In A New Dress” (192k video creations). TikTok-beloved band Avenue Beat (of “F2020” fame) hopped on the trend, proving that anything, from a day at the beach to a Covid test, can make a good album cover.

The upcoming weekend is an eventful one for TikTok, who welcomes Justin Bieber for “Journals Live from the drew house,” the platform’s first-ever full-length livestreamed concert. #JournalsLive features Justin’s first-ever performances of songs from his 2013 album Journals, which introduced R&B elements to the young star’s sound. #Journals live airs LIVE on TikTok at 9pm ET/6pm PT on Valentine’s Day, then airs again at 2pm ET/11am PT on February 15th.

A Valentine’s Day Gift From Justin Bieber & TikTok: #JournalsLive

    The Announcement:

A pop superstar with a catalog full of love songs, Justin Bieber has always been a romantic at heart. Showing love to TikTok on this Valentine’s Day, Justin Bieber announces #JOURNALSLive, the first ever single-artist, full-length concert performance to air LIVE on TikTok. Featuring Justin’s first-ever performance of songs from his fan-favorite 2013 album JOURNALS, #JournalsLive airs live from The Drew House on Justin’s TikTok account (@justinbieber) at 6pm PST/9pm EST on Sunday February 14th, re-airing at 11am PST/2pm EST on Monday February 15th.

Released in 2013 as a groundbreaking digital-only collection of singles, JOURNALS was the companion to Justin’s second full-length documentary feature BELIEVE, and marked a decidedly more mature, R&B-leaning shift in the young star’s output. In the near decade since its release, JOURNALS has amassed three billion streams worldwide, become a fan-favorite among the true Beliebers, and is widely looked upon at some of his best and most personal music to date.

“I’m excited to bring this show to life,” says Justin Bieber. “Journals is one of my favorite projects and I’ve never performed it live. I’m grateful to TikTok for helping me to bring this show to everyone on Valentine’s Day.”

With over 19.6 million followers, Justin Bieber is an active member of the TikTok community, using his account to reveal behind-the-scenes footage, partake in the latest trends, and more. His first-ever TikTok, which included a snippet of his hit song “Yummy” (which was a big TikTok hit with over 5 million video creations) generated over 117 million views. Most recently, Justin declared his devotion to his wife Hailey with a stylish video soundtracked by his single “Anyone.” Justin is currently trending worldwide with his benny blanco collab “Lonely,” which has over 842k video creations and more than 5 billion video views.

Smokepurpp Embraces His Inner Rockstar w/ Psycho (Legally Insane) EP

  • Press Release

Smokepurpp Embraces His Inner Rockstar w/ Psycho (Legally Insane) EP

    2.10.2021

EP: Smokepurpp – Psycho (Legally Insane)

Home To Recent Single “We Outside” ft. Lil Mosey, Psycho (Legally Insane) Finds Purpp Bending Genres and Embracing His Inner Rockstar

– HYPEBEAST

    The EP:

Known for his hard-living lifestyle and boundless charm, Smokepurpp draws inspiration from the rebellious debauchery of rock star icons like GG Allin and Ozzy Osbourne. Using that inspiration as fuel for his new EP, Purpp shares Psycho (Legally Insane). Titled after an urban legend about those who’ve taken more than seven doses in their lifetime (a total Purpp has long surpassed) and with album artwork that pays tribute to Ozzy, Psycho (Legally Insane) finds Purpp experimenting with new flows and an eclectic mix of instrumentals. While some tracks nod towards hip-hop history, like the Memphis-style horrorcore of  “Tic Tac” and Wu-Tang-referencing “Prom Queen,” recent single “We Outside” ft. Lil Moseywhich earned coverage in Complex and more, uses a guitar lick that resembles Red Hot Chili Peppers and “Rockstar” allows Purpp to expand his melodic arsenal. Psycho (Legally Insane) EP is available on all platforms via Alamo Records.

Aided by Jerome Thomas, who lends his silky smooth vocals to the hook, Uno stresses the importance of following the beat of your own drum and not succumbing to the expectations of others. Produced by Bigg Kidd, “Superman” is lush, R&B-influenced ballad, populated by burbling electric keys and sweeping strings that impart a sense of grandeur on Uno’s journey towards acclaim and appreciation: “Keys open doors, couldn’t pick the locks/Bein’ over looked got you feelin’ hot/Your brother got the juice, got you feelin’ Pac/Hungry in your stomach you can feel the knots/Hope the world feel me, n****.”

Shot in crisp infrared black-and-white, the “Superman” video is an allegory for loss and the perpetual inception of grief. The ILLIMITEWORLD-directed video stars Dion Williams opposite Uno Hype, following a loose storyline of Dion attempting to work through the grief he feels about the loss of his brother. The video follows Dion through a world of memory, existing in a twilight zone where Dion can relive past moments with his brother. As the plot proceeds, it becomes harder for Dion to distinguish between memory and reality. “Superman” is Uno’s latest salvo from Sol Glo, his upcoming debut album, which arrives later this month, following the soulful Deywun” ft. Rae Kahlil, which released with a live performance video.

“‘Superman’ is a story that touches on giving out more than you receive and showing up for yourself,” says Uno Hype. “I’ve felt this way in relationships and also in my craft so I wanted to take a page out of Common’s book when he wrote ‘I Used To Love H.E.R.’ and pay homage to hip-hop and at the same time speak on the hardships we often go through in that pursuit. The need to save everything and everybody was an idea I had to let go of a long time ago. Showing up and being there for yourself is the only thing that’s really in your control. Be your own hero!”

Continuing a new artistic direction that prizes warmth, musicality, and self-expression above all else, Sol Glo is an absorbing tour through Uno’s sub-conscious, marked by layered vocal harmonies and organic instrumentation. Created in collaboration with musicians from his Maryland community, including executive producer kojo a.Sol Glo finds Uno rejecting the short-term benefits of clout-chasing in favor of pursuing his artistic passion, delivering pearls of earned wisdom in his malleable melodic raps. Featuring additional appearances from Jurdan BryantJerome Thomas, and Jordan Ward, production from kojo a.Childish MajorHollywood JBnicky quinnChristoOliver Malcolm, and Rvdical the Kid, and instrumentation from Ryan Svendsen (trumpet), Seb Zillner (woodwinds), and Bianca McClure (violin), Sol Glo is coming soon.

With the upcoming Sol Glo, Uno Hype looks to fulfill his promise, collecting his deepest thoughts and musical passions into a cohesive document that builds on his past and blazes a path towards the future. Stay tuned.

    The Background:

He’s been making music for the better part of a decade, but Uno Hype re-emerged with an unquenchable fire in the past year. The artist is a restless creative, well known in the DMV scene for his energetic performances and wide-ranging taste. In the past, he’s collaborated with Joey Bada$$ and Smoke DZA, and performed with a trio of Maryland musicians in a hybrid punk-rap group called G.U.M.P. Uno showed the first signs of his new direction when he released Untitled,” an autobiographical anthem that commented on his career path. Earlier this year, he kept the momentum going with singles like “Color Me,” which commented on systemic racism and earned praise from SPIN, and Leave,” a tormented guitar-and-sax-driven duet with Amal Marie that racked up over 200k views on its lyric video. Both “Leave” and “Color Me” will appear on Sol Glo, Uno’s upcoming debut album, which arrives in January 2021.

Internet Money, Juice Wrld, & Trippie Redd Share Animated “Blast Off” Video

    2.5.2021

Internet Money Releases Animated Music Video for “Blastoff,” featuring Juice WRLD and Trippie Redd

“Blast Off” Appears on Internet Money’s Billboard Top 10 Album B4 The Storm

    Critical Praise:

“Even if you aren’t familiar with L.A. production collective Internet Money, you’ve heard their beats. The group’s sounds have powered some of hip-hop’s biggest records in the past couple years, from Rich the Kid’s “Plug Walk” and Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” to Drake’s “Blue Tint.” The group is helmed by Taz Taylor, a Florida native who — true to his collective’s name — has accumulated a fortune primarily through the internet.” – The FADER

“Taz Taylor doesn’t consider himself an overnight success, but he’s definitely having a moment.” – Variety

“Taylor’s Internet Money collective has been a rousing success so far. The group boasts some 300,000 subscribers on YouTube and millions of hits online. He’s invited prominent producers into the fold, such as KC Supreme, who has worked with Megan Thee Stallion, Nick Mira, who has worked with Post Malone and Tierra Whack, and JRHITMAKER, who has worked with and 6ix9ine.” – Complex

    The Video:

February 5, 2021 – Los Angeles, CA – Following the release of their debut album B4 The Storm and the platinum-earning success of lead single “Lemonade,” featuring Gunna, Don Toliver, and NAV, Internet Money returns once more with an animated music video for “Blastoff,” featuring late rapper Juice WRLD and Trippie Redd. Out now via 10K Projects / Internet Money Records, the video is directed by KDC Visions and shows the two rappers journeying across an unknown planet, defeating their antagonist with a single puff of Trippie’s joint. Since its release in August as part of the track listing for B4 The Storm, “Blastoff” has gained over 88M streams on Spotify and counting.

Put together over a two-week period during quarantine at the Internet Money headquarters in LA, Internet Money’s debut record features contributions from Future, Kevin Gates, and Swae Lee, as well as artists that the collective has built with from the beginning, like Juice WRLD, Trippie Redd, and Lil Skies. B4 The Storm celebrates what Internet Money had accomplished in such a short time and showcases the tireless work ethic of a dynamic group with their eyes set on the future.

Starting as a type-beat factory and growing into a global powerhouse, Taz Taylor and Internet Money have earned 3 Grammy nominations, 58 platinum plaques, 33 gold, and 14 Billboard #1 hits since 2018. The collective is behind some of the biggest rap and R&B hits of the past few years, including Juice WRLD’s “Lucid Dreams” (1.3 billion Spotify streams), Trevor Daniel’s “Falling” (#1 Billboard Mainstream Pop, 37 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with #17 peak), Lil Tecca’s “Ransom” (700 million Spotify streams, #4 Hot 100), and XXXTentacion’s “Fuck Love” ft. Trippie Redd (the most-played song in SoundCloud history). With B4 The Storm, Taz Taylor and Internet Money set out to confirm their status as the music industry’s most powerful hitmaking collective.

    The Background:

    Internet Money Background:

Internet Money was born out of necessity, a hybrid company that has filled in the gaps between the rap industry, the producer community, and the online marketplace. Disillusioned with the industry, and the way he saw rap producers being taken advantage of, Taz Taylor formed the collective in 2016 as a way to share the knowledge he’d gained from years spent selling his “type beats” online and navigating the internet’s ever-growing impact on the production landscape.

Four years in, Internet Money has expanded as a collective, including Grammy-nominated producers like Nick Mira and JR Hitmaker, and produced for DrakeTrippie ReddJuice WRLD, and many more. “When you’re in Internet Money, you get the same opportunities that I do, you’re gonna be working with the same artists that I’m working with, and getting credits with them,” Taylor says. “Instead of working with a bunch of people we don’t know, we just have our own network that’s one big family.” Following their success breaking major artists like Trevor Daniel, and co-producing his multi-platinum hit “Falling,” Taylor and Internet Money partnered with Elliot Grange’s 10K Projects in 2019 to launch their own label.
    Taz Taylor Background:

Taz Taylor has never cared about fame or clout. To hear the multi-platinum producer and Internet Money founder tell it, everything he’s done — from turning his online production hustle selling “type beats” into a $500,000 per year business to forming his own label — has been born out of necessity and guided by intuition. “I’ve been so tunnel vision during the last five years to make sure I got to this point,” he says. “It was just like, Let’s keep building.”

Though the 27-year-old has only been in the industry for a few years, his accomplishments in that time have come at a staggering pace, notching, by his estimation, over 500 placements and around 200 gold and platinum plaques between himself and the other producers on his Internet Money team. As their leader, Taylor has quickly become a new sort of rap mogul, one who’s built his steadily growing empire from a deep knowledge of the ways music moves online, and he’s done it all from the humblest of beginnings.

– HYPEBEAST

    The Announcement:

Crafting bangers about his high-octane lifestyle, Smokepurpp has long idolized the fast-living rock stars of yore. Channeling their energies into a new EP, complete with a cover that pays tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, Smokepurpp announces PSYCHO (Legally Insane) coming next week via Alamo Records. Titled after an urban legend about those who’ve taken more than seven doses in their lifetime (a total Purpp has long surpassed), PSYCHO (Legally Insane) gives the 23-year-old artist the opportunity to experiment with new flows and varied instrumental styles. The EP’s lead track “Prom Queen” nods towards hip-hop history, as Purpp rocks clipped cadences over the Wendy Rene sample made famous by Wu-Tang Clan’s “Tearz,” while “Rockstar” finds him flexing his melodic muscles and “Tic Tac” dabbles in dark, Memphis-style horrorcore. Featuring an appearance from Lil MoseyPSYCHO (Legally Insane) arrives on February 10th via  Alamo Records.

Along with the announcement of the EP, Purpp shares “We Outside,” his latest video single. Produced by The Martianz, “We Outside” finds Purpp absorbing influences like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and serving up a sun-speckled, guitar-driven party banger. The song features a guest spot from Lil Mosey, who complements Purpp’s devotion to going hard until the sun comes up. In the video, directed by Mosey himself, Purpp and Mosey pop bottles of Belaire in a beachside bungalow before taking the party on the road in a sprinter van.

Lil Pump, which surpassed 6 million views on YouTube,  Pop Sh*t,” complete with a Little Richard-inspired music video, and Tide Pen,” a Jack Harlow-featuring single that has over 10 million combined streams on YouTube and Spotify. Florida Jit boasted additional appearances from fellow Floridians Rick Ross and Denzel Curry. The young artist also earned his first Grammy nomination last year, which he received for his contribution to “Costa Rica,” the Gold-certified track from Revenge Of The Dreamers IIIand racked up over 40 million streams on YouTube and Spotify with his guest spot on KSI‘s “Poppin.”

Purpp’s upcoming PSYCHO (Legally Insane) EP is an important step for the artist, who’s ready to raise his game in 2021. Stay tuned for much more music from the former XXL Freshman, including Bless Yo Trap 2, a sequel to his 2018 collaborative album with Murda Beatz.

“Uncomfortable as it can be to watch a couple fight, there’s something incredibly moving about a filmmaker compelled to dedicate an entire movie to acknowledging he couldn’t do this alone. 2.5.2021

    Video: Morray – “Kingdom”

The “Quicksand” Hitmaker Focuses On What’s Truly Important on His New Single–Providing For His Family and Friends

    Critical Praise:

“Few crooning rappers have his polish, resonance, and soul.” – SPIN

“With only four songs on streaming platforms—all released in 2020—Fayetteville, North Carolina rapper Morray has already proven he’s a hitmaker. His debut single “Quicksand” is undeniable, anchored by the type of hook you get from a Roddy Ricch or Rod Wave song and infused with storytelling and charisma to paint a picture even if you’re unfamiliar with the newcomer.” – Pigeons & Planes

    The Video:

““I made Kingdom to remind myself of why I started this whole journey and that was to work hard to be able to provide security for my family and the people closest to me.”  – Morray

With an expert sense of rhythm and a church-trained singing voice, Morray is looking to become a new kind of rap star. Looking to build lasting wealth for his family and community, Morray shares Kingdom,” his new single. Produced by ForeignGotEm Dzimi, “Kingdom” mixes the best of Zaytoven-style trap, contemporary gospel, and early ‘00s R&B. Singing and rapping with a palpable passion, Morray switches between emphatic single-syllables and sliding rhythmic runs, showcasing the natural grit in his voice as he excitedly discusses his rise: “Can’t believe it’s time/I’m finally getting mine/On a cloud living on a high/Blow the clouds rolling who I.”

In the video, directed by Morray’s frequent collaborator JaxOfNorth, Morray stresses the importance of remembering where you came from, as he interacts with neighbors outside a Luck 7, plays board games with his fam, and shows off his muscle car. “Kingdom” is the latest in a run of quality songs that started with his breakout hit Quicksand” and most recently produced the heartfelt Big Decisions.

Since last October, Morray has established himself as one of the rap game’s most exciting new artists, earning “one to watch” designations from ComplexBillboardSPINPigeons & Planes, and many more. Signed to Pick Six Records, he made an instant impact with “Quicksand,” drawing praise from across the industry and the internet. “Quicksand” has more than 20 million YouTube views, 11 million Spotify streams, and 9 million streams on Apple Music, and is in current rotation on BET. It is currently charting at #5 on the Triller x Billboard chart, #10 on SoundCloud’s all-genre chart, #20 on YouTube’s US Music Video chart, at #18 on Shazam’s U.S chart (up from #70 last week), and at #30 on urban radio with 18 adds last week. Morray’s hit song can be found on the Rap CaviarMost Necessary, and The Realest Down South playlists on Spotify and the Rap Life and The Plug playlists on Apple Music. Thanks to “Quicksand” and its follow-up releases, Morray earned powerful co-signs from all over the rap game, including from fellow North Carolina rappers J. Cole and DaBaby.

The rising artist followed-up “Quicksand” with the betrayal ballad “Switched Up” and the tough-talking, Complex-premiered Low Key.” Just in time for the holidays, Morray shared Dreamland,” a moving video about his troubled upbringing, racking up over 2 million views. Stay tuned for much more from the North Carolina native, who is currently hard at work on his debut project.

Pressa and Taliban Glizzy Share “Attachments” Video

    2.4.2021

Video: Pressa – “Attachments” ft. Taliban Glizzy

The Video from the Gardner Express EP Premiered on YouTube Today with a Live Chat and Countdown Hosted by Ivy Rivera

    Critical Praise:

“Not a lot of musicians can claim to have the attention of the biggest music names in their country, or have toured with one of the most successful acts of all time and have released an album all before the age of 23. But Canadian artist Pressa is one of the few that would fit the description.” – Complex

“Pressa’s come a long way from his native of Driftwood and is approaching the business and art of music making like a seasoned veteran.” – Vice

    The Video:

Today, Pressa premiered the official music video for “Attachments” feat. Taliban Glizzy on YouTube WATCH HERE. As an upcoming rapper from the D.C. area, Taliban Glizzy proves he may be following his brother Shy Glizzy’s footsteps, but stands on his own, rounding out “Attachments” with his verse.

The track juxtaposes eerie, moody chords with street lyrics and a trap drum beat, which inspired the director, Michael Vincent, to take a cinematic approach to the video. Vincent is an American photographer, filmmaker, and director who has photographed over 10,000 magazine covers featured throughout various publications such as Maxim, Esquire, GQ, and more. Shot in L.A., the video for “Attachments” chronicles a fictional tale of an informant’s demise.

Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, which resulted in coverage from media juggernauts like Complex, a global Apple Music Beats 1 premiere with Ebro Darden, and over 10.5M worldwide global streams, together to date.

Pressa is applying a renewed vigor to his music and collaborating with likeminded writers, producers and artists on the rise. Inspired by the diverse streets of Toronto and a multicultural Jamaican/Filipino upbringing, Pressa is eager to share his passion and unique music style with the world.

White John & Rucci Get Under the Influence in a New Music Video

  • Press Release

White John & Rucci Get Under the Influence in a New Music Video

    2.4.2021

Video: White John – “I Need Drugs” ft. Rucci

The Two Inglewood Standouts Show Us How They Party in a Trippy New Video from Cases Still Pending EP

    The Video:

Annihilating L.A. instrumentals with reckless abandon, Inglewood native White John is well-respected in his city’s rap scene. Proving once and for all that he’s harder than your MCM and your baby daddy, White John shares “I Need Drugs,” a new music video. Blessed with a silky smooth beat from L.A. sound architect Beat Boy, “I Need Drugs” finds White John discussing his various vices in a deep deadpan, indicating that his affection for altered states springs from deep-seated pain: “Sometimes I sit in my room, sometimes I stare at the wall/Sometimes I hear the perkys call.”

The song features a guest appearance from the White Gurb’s Inglewood associate Rucci, who explicates his hardcore party habits: “I don’t need your love, and I don’t need your hugs/Just give me some drugs.” In the video, White John and Rucci party in John’s apartment, partaking in every substance in the book while computer-generated pills float in the background. The follow-up to “Dead Bodies” ft. OMB Peezy, “I Need Drugs” is a highlight track from White John’s Cases Still Pending EP.

Painting a picture of his chaotic and cinematic life, Cases Still Pending proves why White John (aka Mr. F*ck the LAPD) is one of L.A.’s most colorful rap characters.

Young Dolph and Key Glock are All Systems Go in “Green Light”

    1.22.2021

Video: Young Dolph – “Green Light” ft. Key Glock

The Paper Route EMPIRE Duo Connect On the City Bus in the Video for the Rich Slave (Deluxe) Highlight

    The Video:

Crashing charts and cashing checks, Young Dolph and Key Glock are Southern rap’s most dynamic duo. Connecting over a hypnotic Bandplay beat, Dolph and Glock share Green Light,” a new music video. An addition from the Deluxe Edition of Dolph’s album Rich Slave, “Green Light” is an ultra-smooth smack talker, offering both emcees the opportunity to sneer at the opposition with boss-life bars and witty punchlines: “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, nah, that’s Glock with your main b*tch/I be makin’ plays on top of plays like I ain’t rich,” spits Glock. In the video, directed by Dolph himself under his Paper Route Pictures moniker, Dolph and Glock rock designer on a Memphis city bus, as they hand out wads of cash to their fellow passengers before getting off at a corner to greet some adoring fans. “Green Light” follows Dolph’s video for To Be Honest,” which features cameo appearances from NFL legend Deion Sanders and his son Shadeur.

Expanding his acclaimed and popular 2020 album, Dolph recently released Rich Slave (Deluxe). The deluxe edition offers eight new tracks, bringing the blend of outlandish flexes, confident punchlines, and words of wisdom for which Dolph is known. Though Dolph offers a snapshot of his extravagant life, he never forgets where he came from–the 8 new tracks emphasize Dolph’s connection to his hometown of Memphis, featuring guest spots from Dolph’s Paper Route EMPIRE signees Key Glock and Kenny Muney, boasting production from PRE producer Bandplay, and packing in references to local food spots and neighborhood haunts. Among the Deluxe tracks is the bombastic single. Large Amounts,” along with new highlights like the luxury life anthem “Fast” (“I’ve got a billion dollar future, f*ck yesterday and the past,” asserts Dolph) and the simmering “Buy My Way To Heaven.

Originally released in August 2020, Rich Slave peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 and hit #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums chart, selling over 65k units and generating over 44 million on-demand streams in its first week. The album is home singles like the West Coast tribute Death Row, the conversational Blue Diamonds, and the Megan Thee Stallion-featuring riders’ anthem RNB,” which reached the top ten of Billboard’s Hip-Hop/R&B airplay chart. Rich Slave also features Dolph’s most political statement to date–the searing “The Land,” in which Dolph recounts a run-in with racist police and calls out America for its history of systemic racism. Rich Slave (Deluxe) is available everywhere via Paper Route EMPIRE.
