From the days of Sylvia Robinson pulling strings behind the scenes at Sugar Hill Records to the era of Queen Latifah spreading “U.N.I.T.Y>” to Cardi B & Megan Thee Stallion topping the charts, women have always played a crucial role in shaping hip-hop and pushing it forward.

BEANZ

With an authoritative voice that leaps out of speakers, rising rapper Beanz has bars for days. Born and raised in Reading, Pennsylvania, a mid-sized city located between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, Beanz started her rhyming career as a poet. Before long, her poems evolved into raps, and she began to develop a reputation as the best rapper in her city. Beanz brought her artistry to a larger audience when she joined the cast of Rhythm & Flow, Netflix’s first-ever reality competition show, becoming a fan favorite for her take-no-prisoners attitude. Since Rhythm & Flow, Beanz has been active, releasing successful singles like “Can’t Call It” (over 1 million streams across platforms) and collaborating with Dizzy Wright for “Sick Of Complaining.” Most recently, Beanz turned heads with her new song “Trending Topic,” which samples “Who’s That Girl?” by fellow Pennsylvania native Eve. Ready to take her game to the next level in 2021, the artist is preparing a deluge of new music, including a forthcoming project. Beanz season is coming.

PRADO

Fusing elements of pop, rap, R&B, shoegaze, and electronic music into an invigorating cocktail, Prado makes genre-bending anthems for bad girls. After cutting her teeth as a songwriter and on SoundCloud under the name AlienKanye, Prado started to her mark on the music industry in 2020, packing inventive sonic ideas into her effortlessly quotable jams. The Vancouver native released STRIP, her debut double-single for tmwrk records, which featured the atmospheric, hook-filled banger “STEPHEN” and the confident, incantatory sigh “DRIP” (praised by Complex) in October. She followed up STRIP with “Men In Black,” an anti-f*ckboy anthem that’s catchier than a nursery rhyme. As she continues to release her unceasingly witty and irresistibly catchy music, prepare to see Prado’s lyrics in more Instagram captions than you can count.

 BIG JADE

instagram | official site | twitter | youtube | soundcloud

Bursting out of Beaumont, Texas, a small city with a population of 100k that sits 1 hour east of Houston and 30 mins west of the Louisiana border, Big Jade built an online following with her unapologetic realness. In popular videos like “RPM,” “Phone Jumpin,” and “Respectfully” ft. BeatKing and Queendom Come, Jade exists in her element, showing off her rapping ability while styling hair, her longtime day job. Jade is a proud mother to her young daughter, who often makes cameo appearances in her true-to-life music videos.

Her brief, but visceral Texas trap bangers caught the attention of Houston heavy-hitter BeatKing, who took her under his wing and offered her guest verses and some of his fieriest beats. Now signed to Alamo Records, Jade is gearing up for her debut project, recently sharing the ultra-confident video for the DJ Chose-produced single “Gucci Bag.” With undeniable skills behind the mike, Big Jade is ready to make the leap from being the pride of North Beaumont to a nationally recognized star.

Young Dolph & Key Glock Announce Dum and Dummer 2, Coming March 26th via Paper Route EMPIRE

The Duo Ball Out in Colorado’s Fanciest Ski Town in the Soulful New Single “Aspen”

The Follow-Up to 2019’s Billboard Top 10-Charting Dum and DummerD&D2 Rekindles the Chemistry That Makes Young Dolph and Key Glock One of Rap’s Best Duos

    The Announcement:

Tag-teaming trap tracks with outlandish flexes, Young Dolph & Key Glock are rap’s most in-demand twosome. Today, the Paper Route EMPIRE rappers officially announce Dum and Dummer 2, their second full-length collaborative album. The follow-up to 2019’s Dum and Dummerwhich peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200, Dum and Dummer 2 finds Dolph & Glock operating at an even higher level of craftsmanship, charisma, and luxury. The two rappers–and blood cousins–often seem like two halves of the same brain, each seamlessly picking up threads and finishing lines that the other leaves off.

Currently available for pre-order, album is home to Case Closed, last month’s hauntingly flex-heavy single, and Key Glock’s bombastic solo cut “I’m The Type,” as well as plenty of new highlights. Boasting artwork that slyly references MTV’s most famous duo Beavis & Butthead, Dum and Dummer 2 features several solo tracks from both Young Dolph and Key Glock interspersed with the heavy-hitting collab songs. Featuring production from PRE’s own Bandplay, who shows off his tremendous musicality and versatility, along with beats from Memphis natives like DJ Squeaky and Sosa808Dum and Dummer 2 hits the internet on March 26th via Paper Route EMPIRE.

Dumb & Dumber is one of my and Glock’s favorite movies,” says Young Dolph. “We do stuff in real life that’s just like they do in that movie. We just like having fun with everything we do.”

To accompany the announcement of the album, the duo “Aspen,” a new music video and single that is icy in all senses of the word. Blessed with a deeply soulful beat from Bandplay (“that’s who I’m runnin’ up the bands with,” rhymes Dolph), complete with textured blasts of organ and twinkling keys, “Aspen” is a master class in flexing, as Dolph & Glock brag about ballin’ out in Colorado’s ritziest mountain town. Each rapper has a blast slaloming around Bandplay’s 808s to craft their assonant boasts: “Get out my way, I’ll pop you like an Aspirin/Trap n**** on my way to Aspen/Smoke the best weed and spend millions on fashion,” spits Dolph on the hook.

Home to fan-favorite hits like Water On Water On Water” and 1 Hell Of A Life,” Dum & Dummer was a deluxe-sized showcase for the duo’s inimitable chemistry and unparalleled flexes. Dum and Dummer inspired a successful joint tour, during which Dolph & Glock sold over 43,000 tickets and sold out shows in multiple markets. Dolph & Glock connected earlier this year for Green Light,” a highlight single from the deluxe version of Dolph’s Rich Slave album, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 upon its release in August. Look for the Memphis natives to make just as big a splash with Dum and Dummer 2.

Taleban Dooda Recruits 42 Dugg for “Trappin’ Ain’t Dead,” Announces 5/14 Debut Album

  • Press Release

Taleban Dooda Recruits 42 Dugg for “Trappin’ Ain’t Dead,” Announces 5/14 Debut Album

    3.5.2021

Taleban Dooda Connects with 42 Dugg for the Hard-Hitting “Trappin’ Ain’t Dead”
The Tampa Native Announces Debut Album Fallen Angel, Arriving May 14th via Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records

The 18-Year-Old Rising Star Shows Off His Spitting Skills Over a Helluva-Produced Beat on His New Video Single

    Critical Praise:

“At only 18 years old.. his talents are already overly abundant and his potential is probably higher than most up and coming artists you could name off the top of your head.” – Lyrical Lemonade

“He falls into the lane of melodic street rap that acts like YoungBoy Never Broke Again, Lil Durk, Teejay3k, and others are making, but his high-pitched vocals and limitless subject matter set him apart.” – Earmilk

    The Announcement + Video:

Taleban Dooda is tearing up the Florida scene with his nimble melodics and raw lyricism. Ready to harness his prodigious talent into a full-length effort, the 18-year-old East Tampa native formally announces Fallen Angel, his forthcoming debut album. Bursting with invention and earworm hooks, the upcoming album gives a home to recently released highlights like “Chosen” ft. T9ine a gospel-influenced anthem that earned praise from Pitchfork and HipHopDX (who named the song one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2021 So Far) and counts 3 million total streams, and the tuneful No Eater,” released last month and featured prominently on Spotify’s Fresh Finds playlist. Capitalizing on momentum that has been building since the Dooda’s release of the street hit Tru Colors” last January, Fallen Angel releases on May 14th via Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records.

To accompany the announcement of the album, Dooda shows off his pure rapping ability in his hard-charging new video single Trappin’ Ain’t Dead.” Featuring an appearance from in-demand guest verse god 42 Dugg, “Trappin’ Ain’t Dead” borrows the chaotic sonics of Dugg’s native Detroit, recruiting producer Helluva to provide his signature rubbery bass and racing piano arpeggios. The stylistic change-up comes naturally for Dooda, who tones down his usual melodics and lets loose with a hard-charging flow, proving that he’s the top dog in his hometown. In the video, shot by 20k Visuals, Dooda and Dugg trap out at an East Tampa Chevron as they mob with their crews.

Taleban Dooda has been steadily building a fanbase since release his first single in early 2020, displaying a natural melodic ability that helps him stand out in a burgeoning Florida street rap scene. He scored street hits in the first half of the year with the likes of “Tru Colors” (over 3 million total streams) and “2 In Da Morning” (1 million views), and kept the momentum going in the fall with standout singles like “Dis Dooda,” which Vice named as one of the 24 Best Songs of September. Stay tuned for more releases from Dooda in the run-up to his debut album, and his first-ever full length project, Fallen Angel.

    The Background:

Taleban Dooda always had a voice–a combination of distinctly Floridian style and irresistibly catchy melody, has made the 18-year-old rapper one of the most exciting new rap voices coming out of the South. Hailing from East Tampa, Dooda had few options to avoid the violence that lurked outside his door. When he injured his knee in his 9th grade year, ending his football dreams, Dooda turned his attention to music. He began by recording himself covering other people’s songs — inspired by his love for artists like Bruno Mars, John Legend, and Sam Smith — before moving on to his own original compositions. Influenced by artists like NBA Youngboy, Polo G, and NoCap, Taleban Dooda decided to become a rapper.

For Dooda, 2020 was all about consistency, as he continued to drop a steady stream of strong singles throughout the year. In September, he released “Dis Dooda” — which VICE named one of the best songs of the month and Lyrical Lemonade highlighted on their site — and followed that up in November with the TM88 and ATL Jacob-produced “Finish Him.” Now, Dooda has his eyes set on the upcoming release of his debut album. With all this momentum, and all of Florida behind him, he doesn’t plan to slow down any time soon. “I’m just trying to keep dropping music,” he says. “I ain’t trying to take no breaks.”

  • Press Release

On TikTok: Kali Uchis and Coi Leray Hit the Charts as Bobby Shmurda Comes Home

    3.3.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of March 1st

    The News:

TikTok is a major of music culture, capable of taking an unknown song to the Billboard charts. The platform relies upon a give-and-take between artists and the community–the artists engaging with their fans, and the fans responding by using their creative energy to re-interpret the music that inspires them. Below, find some ways music sparked creativity in the TikTok community in recent weeks:

    • New York rapper Bobby Shmurda finished a bid in prison last week, and TikTok was ready to roll out the red carpet. The 26-year-old rapper created a TikTok account shortly after coming home, quickly racking up over 260k followers, and posting videos of highlights from his first week as a free man, including the moment when he first saw his Gold and Platinum plaques. Shmurda’s return inspired a viral moment on the platform for his signature hit “Hot N****,” generating over 50k video creations, as TikTok users celebrated his freedom by doing the Shmoney Dance or creating an animation of Bobby’s hat from the song’s music video.
    • Last month, Grammy-nominated electronic music producer KAYTRANADA previewed a cool, disco track titled “Caution” as part of TikTok’s Black History Month celebration. Though Black History Month has come to an end, the success of the song seems to just be beginning. TikTok users have fully embraced the song since its release, propelling it to over 264k creations. The song’s eclectic, yet smooth vibe makes it the perfect background music for a a variety of creative tutorials, ranging from custom Nike art to the iconic “curtain” haircut, and has even provided the soundtrack for adorable toddler Spanish lessons and low-carb pizza recipes.
    • With over 1.7 million followers, rising rapper Coi Leray is a TikTok favorite and an active user of the platform, using TikTok to partake in viral dance trendsgoof around with friendsshow her support for Britney Spears, and more. In early January, Coi dropped her most popular video yet when she shared a snippet of herself and some friends dancing to a moody, piano-laden song, generating over 3.9 million views. Inspired by the fan response, Coi shared “No More Parties” one week later, making an instant splash on streaming and on TikTok, where it has soundtracked over 292k video creations (and 88k more on a slowed version), including delicious pasta recipesfamily dances, and more. Propelled in part by its TikTok success, which helped lead to a remix featuring Lil Durk, “No More Parties” jumped 38 spots to reach #32 on the Billboard Hot 100.
    • The TikTok community loves a good chill vibe, and R&B singer Kali Uchis was happy to oblige with her melodic, Spanish language track “telepatía.” The bilingual hit has racked up over 391k creations on the platform, with some creators using the track to show off their baked goodsbanana boba tea, and amazing zodiac sign-inspired body makeup. Fully embracing all of the love the song has been receiving, Kali Uchis even took to her own page to discuss the spiritual meaning behind the therapeutic track. This week, “telepatía” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at #54, earning Kali Uchis her first Hot 100 hit as a lead artist.
    • The top-trending song on TikTok this week is “Batman” (430k creations and rising on two sounds) a nostalgic track from rising Orlando rapper LPB Poody. Sampling the 2009 classic (and popular TikTok hit) Teach Me How To Dougie” by Cali Swag District, “Batman” took off after prolific creator and erstwhile Starbucks employee @karaleighcannella choreographed an expressive dance to the song, which drew the attention of influencers like James Charles. Responding to Poody’s line “she told me to recline so I had to let back the seats,” the entries to the dance challenge have evolved into a contest to see who can lean back the furthest while still remaining on their two feet.
    • Another week, another hit  TikTok helped revitalize. This week, the trending song is “Astronaut In The Ocean,” a moody and melodic song that Australian rapper Masked Wolf originally released in 2018. Steadily trending since fall 2020, “Astronaut In The Ocean” struck a chord with TikTok users, inspiring nearly 800k video creations across multiple sounds. The song has been a go-to for any creator looking to show off an awesome feat of skill (whether by human or panther), ranging from amazing soccer goals to off-road driving and martial arts. The song’s TikTok success helped Masked Wolf land a deal with Elektra Records, and the song recently reached #62 on the Billboard Hot 100.

After helping propel the first number one hit of 2021 to the top of the charts (Olivia Rodrigo’s “Driver’s License,” which remains on top), TikTok-trending songs have been a constant presence in the culture. Though some TikTok-trending songs that reach the charts might not be conventional pop hits, it is no longer a novelty to see a song by a new artist climbing to prominence. As usual, the best way to keep an eye on rising hits and artists is to keep scrolling down your For You page.

    The Video:

With a habit for collecting cars of all shapes and sizes, it’s no wonder Curren$y earned the nickname “Spitta Andretti.” Offering a glimpse at his array of coupes, boxframes, and droptops, Curren$y shares the video for Closing Date.” Sliding through a bassy instrumental from frequent collaborator Trauma Tone, Curren$y serves up descriptive and highly-specific flexes about his most prized possessions: “If you could imagine D93s on a E-class wagon/My homies active, I’m not flaggin’, I’m just mashin’/Fifty-seven Bel Air with the tail draggin’/Sparks flashin’, Spitta talkin’ that cash sh*t, yup.” In the video, Spitta channels legendary Indycar racer Mario Andretti, gathering his Jet Life associates to show off his classic Indy 500 pace car (a Corvette), along with an old school Chevy Impala, a Rolls Royce Wraith, and several other high-class whips. “Closing Date” is the latest video from Collection Agency, Curren$y’s brand new project, out now via Jet Life Recordings/EMPIRE.

Packed with the hazy production and intricate rhymes that have been thrilling Curren$y fans for over a decade, Collection Agency finds the New Orleans native in his bag, spinning witticisms about his life of luxury and painting pictures with his detailed description. The album features production from Harry FraudDj.freshTrauma Tone, and more, who create a smooth and sumptuous sonic palette that borrows from ’80s electrofunk and quiet storm R&B. The tape boasts recent singles like the luscious Kush Through The Sunroof” and the wistfully horn-laden Misty,” along with highlights like the jazzy, Harry Fraud-produced Arrival” (complete with an animated visual), “I Don’t Call,” in which the rapper brags about getting bands in a pandemic, and the saxophone-drenched late-night heater “Jermaine Dupri, which drew praise from the man himself on Twitter. Featuring an appearance from Larry JuneCollection Agency earned coverage from ComplexHYPEBEASTXXL, and many others.

Kalan.FrFr Signs to Roc Nation, Previews 3/12 Debut Album TwoFr 2

  • Press Release

Kalan.FrFr Signs to Roc Nation, Previews 3/12 Debut Album TwoFr 2

    3.1.2021

Rising L.A. Artist Kalan.FrFr Signs With Roc Nation

The Melodic Rapper Reveals the Cover Art and Tracklist For His Debut Album TwoFr 2, Coming March 12th

The Upcoming Album From the Versatile Compton Native Features Recent Singles like “Scoring,” “Get In” ft. Stunna 4 Vegas, and “No Love” ft. Mozzy

    Critical Praise:

“On the West Coast, Kalan has emerged as the premier vocalist in L.A.’s thriving street rap scene, closer in comparison to Ty Dolla $ign than OhGeesy…but Kalan proves he can go bar for bar with L.A.’s best.”  – Pitchfork

“Don’t be fooled by Kalan.frfr. Just because he often uses his warm R&B melody over lush piano keys doesn’t mean he’s making bright-eyed love songs…When you’re talking about L.A.’s new wave of sh*t-talking, designer-obsessed rappers, Kalan.frfr should be included. He just happens to sing.” – Pitchfork

“Upon meeting YG, Kalan.frfr was honored that the hip-hop superstar was a fan of his music.” – HYPEBEAST

“Kalan.Frfr has been a part of an exciting new wave of LA rap that includes artists like himself, Shoreline Mafia, 1TakeJay, and the currently incarcerated cult favourites Drakeo the Ruler & 03 Greedo. Unlike most of the artists on that list, Kalan’s music retains a consistently celebratory vibe with an emphasis on party bangers. It’s certainly something he does well.” HotNewHipHop

Favorite Hip-Hop/R&B Songs of 2020 (“Scoring”) – EARMILK

    The Announcement:

Mixing a smoothly melodic vocal style with a streetwise lyrical sensibility, there’s no limit to how high Compton’s Kalan.FrFr can rise. Today, the 25-year-old artist officially announces that he and his label First Class Entertainment have signed a partnership with Roc Nation.

“Being with Roc Nation feels like we set our goals and now we’ve accomplished them,” says Kalan. “We’re just excited to take it to the next level. I just wanna prove to everyone that believes in me…I wanna prove them right.”

“Kalan gives you star power upon walking in the door. He commands a room, studio, and/or stage! Signing him was a no brainer for us!” – Shari Bryant & Omar Grant, Co-Presidents at Roc Nation

Along with his new deal with the Roc, Kalan reveals the cover artwork and tracklist for his debut album TwoFr 2, arriving on March 12th. The sequel to 2018’s TwoFr, home to local hits like like Fine Ass and Naked,” TwoFr 2 takes Kalan’s artistry to a new level, complementing his raunchy love songs with introspection and hard-earned wisdom.

The upcoming album is home to Scoring, which earned airtime during a Los Angeles Lakers NBA playoff game in the Fall and is currently impacting at urban radio, and “Get In,” a lumbering, piano-heavy banger with an appearance from Stunna 4 VegasTwoFr 2 also boasts the standout track “No Love” ft. Mozzy & Cypress Moreno, for which Kalan teased a forthcoming video on his Instagram. Already a standout in the L.A. rap scene, the upcoming TwoFr 2 proves that Kalan has the goods to follow the footsteps of Kendrick Lamar and Roddy Ricch to become Compton’s next national star.

A major figure in Los Angeles’ stacked rap scene, recently crashing the Top 10 of Billboard’s Emerging L.A. Artists chart, Kalan.FrFr earned accolades and co-signs for his breezy melodies and hard-hitting bars. In 2020, the artist’s singular alchemy caught the attention of L.A. rap superstar YG, who hopped on the remix for Kalan’s hard-hitting Right Wit It.” A vocalist with many dimensions, the artist earned praise from Pitchfork in 2019 for his pure rapping ability on his fan-favorite Hot N Ready (Freestyle).”

“Kalan.FrFr is melodic but his delivery on songs will always make you remember him,” says Earl Johnson, Senior Director of A&R at Roc Nation Records. “He’s a hitmaker and a born star.”

Stay tuned for more announcements and music from Kalan in the coming weeks.

It’s impossible to overstate the impact of The Notorious B.I.G.–he forever changed the art of rhyming with sharp storytelling and boundless charisma, redefined the commercial possibilities of rap stardom, and embodied the rough-and-tumble hustle of his home borough of Brooklyn. But before he was Biggie Smalls, he was just Christopher Wallace–ambitious, sweet, if a bit of a troublemaker. A loyal friend and the apple of his mother’s eye.

Instead of focusing on the glitz and glamor of Wallace’s torrid career and wide-ranging stardom, the new documentary Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell offers a close look at the man behind the myth. Featuring rare archival footage and interviews with the people who knew him best–his mother, Voletta Wallace, his business partner Sean Combs, his girlfriend Faith Evans, and close friends from Bed-Stuy like Lil CeaseI Got A Story To Tell descriptively details the world Biggie was desperate to escape, and the loved ones he wanted to take with him.

Executive-produced by Biggie’s mother Voletta Wallace and Sean Combs, and directed by Emmett Malloy, the new doc is packed with stories and nuggets that will interest longtime Biggie fans and newcomers alike, explaining Biggie’s diverse musical background that incorporated hip-hop, dancehall, and jazz (thanks to his neighbor and musical mentor Donald Harrison), giving additional context to classic songs like “Respect,” “Warning,” and “Miss U,” among others, and exploring the circumstances behind Biggie’s famous Fulton Street freestyle.

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell allows fans to come closer than ever to knowing and understanding Biggie Smalls the way his closest friends and loved ones did.

Biggie: I Got A Story To Tell is available to watch now on Netflix.

Curren$y Finetunes His Luxury Lifestyle Rap with Collection Agency Project

    2.26.2021

    Album: Curren$y – Collection Agency

The Prolific Emcee and Jet Life CEO’s New Project Features Larry June and Production from Harry Fraud, DjFresh, and More, and Arrives with a Visualizer for Album Highlight “Arrival”

    Critical Praise:

“Curren$y is still capable of rapping something so simple it’ll make you wonder how no one has rapped it already” – Pitchfork

“Curren$y’s sharpened pen and deft wordplay will quiet the doubters. His influence was evident then, and it’s irrefutable now.” – Rolling Stone

    The Album:

A connoisseur of fine herbs and finer beats, prolific rapper Curren$y is the world’s hardest-working stoner. Coming through with his first project of a busy 2021, Spitta shares Collection Agency.

The tape boasts recent singles like the luscious Kush Through The Sunroof” and the wistfully horn-laden Misty,” along with as-yet-unheard highlights like “I Don’t Call,” in which the rapper brags about getting bands in a pandemic, and the saxophone-drenched late-night heater “Jermaine Dupri, which drew praise from the man himself on Twitter. Featuring a guest appearance from Curren$y’s kindred spirit Larry JuneCollection Agency is available on all platforms via Jet Life Recordings/EMPIRE.

Along with the album, Curren$y shares a new animated visualizer for project highlight “Arrival.” Blessed with a jazzy boom-bap backing track courtesy of Harry Fraud, a mood that suits Curren$y’s detail-rich descriptive abilities, “Arrival” finds Curren$y dwelling on the psychological and material impacts of money. The New Orleans native reflects on how his relationship with his mom and his less scrupulous relatives have changed, and stresses his accomplishments as a businessman: “Success is my cologne/Thuggish ruggish bone/For the love of money/Loved ones do you wrong.” Animated in a cutout style by Lakeem Wilson, the new visualizer situates Curren$y as a frontman to a band of dog musicians, while the animation shifts to match Spitta’s lyrics.

Collection Agency is Curren$y’s first new project of 2021, following a yet another busy year for the veteran rapper. In 2020, the uncountably prolific rapper released 4 full-length projects and multiple EPs, each with a different set of collaborators. He kicked off the year with The Tonite Show With Curren$y, an entry into Dj.fresh’s renowned series of mixtapes, before keeping the momentum up with the Cardo Got Wingz-produced Green Tape EP,Smokin’ Potnas, a collaborative effort with his Jet Life associate Fendi P, and Spring Clean, a 10-track project with 808 Mafia producer Fuse. The second half of 2020 brought TheOutRunners, a Harry Fraud-produced effort that earned coverage from Consequence Of SoundHYPEBEASTREVOLT,  and more. The Jet Life CEO ended the year with Welcome To Jet Life Recordingsa label showcase that featured contributions from signees like T.Y.Black Cobain, and more.

Key Glock Proves He’s On Another Level in “I’m The Type”

    2.26.2021

Video: Key Glock – “I’m The Type

Produced by Bandplay, “I’m The Type” Showcases the Paper Route EMPIRE Signee’s Unparalleled Flexing Ability

    Critical Praise:

“If somebody wants to know what current day Memphis rap sounds like, show them Key Glock. The 21-year-old has uncontrollable energy, can tell a funny story, and says it all over beats that pay homage to the city’s history while still incorporating a modern bounce.” – Pitchfork

“Rags-to-riches stories are a constant in rap, but Glock’s enthusiasm is infectious. Coupled with hard-hitting beats—from the slinky guitars and 808s of opener “1997” to the subwoofer-crushing drums of lead single “Mr. Glock”—Yellow Tape is enough reason to celebrate making it to the finish line on any given day. May the congregation say amen.” – Complex

“Key Glock is Memphis’s best new lyricist.” – The FADER

    The Video:

With his relentless appetite for flexing and the bankroll to back it up, Key Glock isn’t like those other guys. Determined to prove that he’s a cut above the average, Key Glock shares “I’m The Type,” his new single. Blessed with ringing piano from Bandplay, “I’m The Type” finds Glizzock giving a methodical rundown to explain why he’s sicker than the average emcee: “I’m the type of n**** spend six figures on my wrist/You that type of n**** that be stressin’ bout the rent.” Though the piano loosely resembles the Bridal March, Key Glock is clear throughout the song that he’s not the marrying type, flaunting his playboy attitude with blunt-force bars: “Glizzock pulled up in that new thang with the top off/Then he pulled off with your girlfriend and knocked her socks off.” “I’m The Type” is Glock’s follows the standout single Off The Porch,” which came complete with a flashy music video (2.7 million views).

Signed to Young Dolph‘s Paper Route EMPIRE label, Key Glock established himself as a bonafide star in 2020, reaching the top 40 of the Billboard 200 with two different projects and without any guest artists. His May mixtape Son Of A Gun reached #37 on the Billboard 200.  January’s successful Yellow Tape, which hosted successful singles like Look At They Face,” the suave Mr. Glock,” and the sinister I’m Just Sayin’.” Praised by PitchforkComplex, and more, the project reached #16 on the Billboard 200.

His two 2020 releases built on the success of 2019’s Dum & Dummerthe rapper’s collaborative project with Young Dolph. Most recently, the 23-year-old rapper released Never Change,” a new video single produced by Bandplay (2 million views). Earlier this year, Glock reconnected with Glock for the haunting “Case Closed” and for “Green Light,” a cut from the Deluxe Edition of Dolph’s Rich Slave album.

Stay tuned for much more from the prolific young rapper as 2021 moves along.

  • According to TikTok’s 2020 Music Report, R&B was the third-most popular genre on the platform, only trailing hip-hop and pop. Recently, and especially during Black History Month, R&B artists have been showing appreciation for TikTok and its community. Last night, Texan Soul singer Leon Bridges hosted a LIVE stream to raise money for the Alvin Ailey Foundation on TikTok, after previewing his cover of gospel deep cut “Like A Ship” exclusively on TikTok last week. Other R&B icons, including Kelly Rowland, Ashanti, and Monica have hosted LIVE conversations with Black TikTok creators to talk about their careers and issues important to them. With plenty of love on both sides, TikTok’s love affair with R&B is in no danger of ending any time soon.

Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, and Giveon Lead TikTok’s R&B Moment

    Press Release

Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, and Giveon Lead TikTok’s R&B Moment

    2.24.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of February 22nd

R&B Songs by Rihanna, Brent Faiyaz, Lil Tjay & 6LACK, and Others Tear Up TikTok During Black History Month

    The News:

R&B has always had a special place in the hearts of TikTok users and the company itself. TikTok’s two biggest LIVE events involved R&B superstar The Weeknd and Justin Bieber’s recent Valentine’s Day performance of JOURNALS, his most R&B-influenced album. Now, the genre is having a major moment on TikTok, with multiple trending songs and a breakout star. Check out the stories below:

    • Bronx rapper Lil Tjay and R&B star 6LACK have had TikTok users across the world in their feelings with their somber breakup anthem “Calling My Phone” garnering over 95k creations on the platform. The two have become notorious for mood music on TikTok in the past year, as Lil Tjay’s Pop Smoke “Mood Swings” hit collaboration and 6LACK’s “PRBLMS” have both soared on the platform. Quite the avid TikTok users, they are now featuring music video footage as well as the story of the making of the R&B tune on their own pages. The song’s melancholic mood has inspired much creativity in the TikTok community, with some of the highlights including creators teaching lessons in loyalty and even showing off their own takes on the song, some in rather unlikely locations. The song’s TikTok success helped the song make a major commercial impact, landing a #3 debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
    • Rihanna has kept her fans waiting a while for new music,, but that hasn’t stopped more than one of her songs from reaching viral status. In recent weeks, “Pour It Up” (33.7k video creations) Rihanna’s cavernous collab with Mike WiLL Made It, made waves on the platform, inspiring users to make decadent burritos, to try little-known candies, and to make daring hair decisions. It’s more pop-facing than R&B, but Rihanna’s 2008 hit “Disturbia” is also having a viral moment (311k video creations, 78 million video views on #disturbia), with particular focus on RiRi’s spoken “what’s wrong with me?” line in the song’s intro. The sound is ideal for self-deprecating TikTok users who know they’re wrong, but are tempted to do the wrong thing anyway.
    • Brent Faiyaz already has a large and devoted fanbase, but his fans know that he has superstar potential. His new TikTok-trending single “Gravity,” featuring Tyler, The Creator and DJ Dahi, might be the song that gets him to the upper echelon of stardom. The song already has 567k video creations from users (including influencers like Loren Gray) who’ve taken to the song’s “don’t act like I’m average” hook, using it to soundtrack clips of their extraordinary skills, ranging from yo-yo excellence, to mouth-watering cooking abilities, to making custom lipstick, and even creating a Brent Faiyaz rug. The song already has over 13 million streams on Spotify and currently sits in the Top 15 of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
    • Grammy-nominated R&B rising star Giveon has TikTok in its feelings with his viral song “HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY,” which has over 115k video creations on the platform. The song has several qualities that TIkTok users generally enjoy, including “ethereal” vibes, pitch-manipulated vocals, and a clearly communicated message. “HEARTBREAK ANNIVERSARY” is the ideal backing music for hating Valentine’s Day, vibing at a coral beach, or just admiring Giveon’s golden pipes. The deeply emotional and cathartic song is currently in the Top 10 of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 and at #75 on the Billboard Hot 100 (Giveon’s first entry as a lead artist), but it’s important to remember that a sad song is no substitute for therapy.
    • It isn’t just established R&B stars who make noise on TikTok–the platform is helping young artists like Reyanna Maria rise to prominence. Reyanna built an audience on TikTok by engaging with other users on the platform, making her own beats and covering songs by Ariana GrandeSummer WalkerSZA, and Billie Eilish. Reyanna had a major breakthrough in December when she duetted a beat by @katoproducer with a calm and confident rap verse, earning over 2 million views. After clamoring from followers and fans, Reyanna made the audio into a TikTok sound (1.4 million video creations), and eventually a full song called “So Pretty.” Reyanna Maria’s success with “So Pretty” led to a record deal with Republic Records, and earlier this week, “So Pretty” earned a verse from Tyga for the official remix.

According to TikTok’s 2020 Music Report, R&B was the third-most popular genre on the platform, only trailing hip-hop and pop.

On Friday, TikTok ends Black History Month with a bang airing the TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration. Airing on Friday February 26th and hosted by Karen Civil and Challan, the TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration traces the evolution of California rap, featuring interviews and performances from iconic Cali artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Saweetie, each with a special backdrop that speaks to their West Coast roots. White John Investigates His Lone Wolf Tendencies In “By Yourself” Video

  • Press Release

White John Investigates His Lone Wolf Tendencies In “By Yourself” Video

    2.24.2021

Video: White John – “By Yourself

The Inglewood Rapper Can Only Rely On Himself In the Latest Video from His Cases Still Pending EP

    Critical Praise:

“Where did White John come from? Did he drop from the sky? Was he created in a lab? We’ll never know. Regardless, the Inglewood rapper has quickly become a must-know name on the West Coast.” – Pitchfork

“The self-proclaimed ‘Mr. F*ck LAPD,’ John has a swagger undoubtedly forged by moving in Piru sections of the city. If he continues to improve at this rate, he might be next up far beyond Inglewood.” – SPIN

“Everybody in LA loves White John. He’s from Inglewood. He grew up down the street. He went to Westchester High. He’s always been around everybody. He should’ve been rapping, but he was into living the fast life. Everything he be talking about is real sh*t. LAPD really does hate his ass.” – Rucci, to The FADER

    The Video:

Building a reputation with his rock-solid flow and outsized persona, White John worked hard for everything he has. Proudly practicing the art of self-reliance, the rapper also known as Mr. F*ck The LAPD shares By Yourself,” his latest music video. Blessed with a bass-heavy instrumental from Ace The Face, “By Yourself” is a propulsive and emotionally complex bit of Cali fire. The song is packed with White John’s trademark in-your-face aggression (“Second of all, f*ck the opps and they dead homies”), but it also speaks to the loneliness and pain that fuels John’s me-against-the-world attitude: “Ion even talk to my moms/Ion even think she’d care if I was gone.” In the video, directed by the White Gurb’s frequent collaborator Mr.RealMovie, John stalks the streets of Inglewood in a bunny-eared hoodie, showing off the otherworldly confidence required to get by in his neighborhood by his lonely. “By Yourself” is the latest video from Cases Still Pending, John’s recently released EP.

Painting a picture of his chaotic and cinematic life, Cases Still Pending proves why White Johnis one of L.A.’s most colorful rap characters. Wielding a laid-back, yet insistent flow, John sits firmly in the pocket of the propulsive West Coast production, crafted by the likes of scene sound architects like Beat Boy and Ace The Face, alternating outlandish flexes and hedonistic odes to the turn-up lifestyle with sober reflections on the realities of street life. Cases Still Pending is home to previous video singles including the OMB Peezy-featuring Dead Homies (250k views) and the trippy I Need Drugs” (228k views), featuring an appearance from White John’s Inglewood associate Rucci. The sequel to last year’s Cases Pending EP, home to the rapper’s street hit Crazy,” Cases Still Pending is available now on all platforms.

Respected in his hometown for his unapologetic realness and fluency with slang, White John rose to local hero status in L.A. in 2020. He caught the attention of his city with songs like Crazy” and Road Runnin’,” racking up hundreds of thousands of streams on YouTube and Spotify. He’s been praised by the likes of Pitchfork and SPIN, and collaborated with Fenix FlexinLil House Phone, and many others in the L.A. scene. Look for White John to make much more noise as 2021 moves along.

Oakland’s Rising Star Laney Keyz Bares His Soul In New Video

  • Press Release

Oakland’s Rising Star Laney Keyz Bares His Soul In New Video

    2.23.2021

    Video: Laney Keyz – Famous

The Emerging Rapper Documents His Fears, Loyalties, Imperfections, and How High the Stakes Are

    Critical Praise:

“With raw talent, and against the backdrop of a pandemic, Laney Keyz looks poised to jump straight from aspiring musician to full-blown star.” – SF Weekly

“Laney’s music comes from a place of support, combining infectious hooks and a delivery that reels listeners in like a prize catch.”  – DJ Booth

“Inspired greatly by Meek Mill, his music is a combination of melodic R&B and hardcore hip-hop.” – FLAUNT

“Keyz’s music is melodic and heartfelt, his three singles bouncy enough for the club but introspective enough for a late-night drive. ‘Colorful Sh*t’ is succinct and snappy, enough so that it unexpectedly caught the attention of Lil Yachty. “ – PopDust

    The Video:

Primed to be the Bay’s next to blow, Laney Keyz reveals more about his upbringing and background growing up in East Oakland than he ever has. Although he’s lived a life full of both hardships and beauty, both mistakes and triumphs, Laney strives for more than the circumstances he was dealt and his new song, “Famous” reflects that. In essence, he cares less about being famous than he does making it out the hood. The pressures of becoming famous are inconsequential to the pressures of surviving the streets and armed with that experiential knowledge, Laney is destined for success.

Flashing his melodic bars on the psychedelic, stuttering 808 beat, the visual for “Famous” delivers fluttering, kaleidoscopic glimpses into the East Oakland native’s old stomping grounds. The graffiti-covered walls and night-ridden streets provide the backdrop for his angst as he candidly details the increasing anxiety behind his transition from a troubled childhood to rising fame. Packed with local references that any East Bay kid would understand, “Famous” reveals his origin story, documenting his his fears, his loyalties, his imperfections, his days spent at Santa Rita county jail, and how he’d love to go back home to Oakland but knows he’s better off if he stays in his new home of LA. “Famous” is the follow-up to “360,” Laney’s high-octane Lil Keed collaboration.

Born and raised in East Oakland, Laney Keyz named himself after Laney College, a local community college, symbolizing his desire to better himself and triumph over street life. Although he’s lived a life full of hardships in Oakland, he strives for more and his music reflects that. Laney started his music career behind the scenes, making ends meet as an audio engineer before starting to write songs for some notable West Coast artists. After years of working on his craft, the rapper started to release music of his own in Summer 2020, gathering buzz with loose singles and by recording his own freestyles over popular beats, including Travis Scott’s “FRANCHISE” and DaBaby’s “Blind.” Laney Keyz made noise earlier this year with the globe-trotting Russia,” the flossy trap ballad Knockout,” Colorful Sh*t,” which features an appearance from Lil Yachty, and most recently, “360,” Laney’s high-octane collaboration with Lil Keed.

    Laney Keyz Background:

Laney Keyz is a slick-talking, smooth, melody-making lyricist on the verge of becoming a household name so early in his career. At just 23 years old, with a smaller discography than most under his belt, Laney Keyz has found a way to reach a subset of rap fans who’ve immediately clung to his music, image, and aesthetic, in ways that artists who’ve been in the industry for triple the time that he has haven’t been able to. He’s a prodigy with an inspiring story for anyone looking to pursue their dreams.

    The Background:

Pressa captured rap fans’ attention in Canada and the U.K. by garnering millions of YouTube views for 2016’s “Wass Gang,” landed on a tour with Drake, and emerged as a local cultural sensation. Pressa made his mark with the inimitable mix of his street-oriented lyrics, melodic hooks and high-pitched voice, making him a fixture in the Toronto hip-hop scene.

Recognized for an impressive list of collaborations (Murda Beatz, UK hip-hop don, Giggs, Lil Uzi Vert) over the years, the Canadian rapper continued his hot streak in 2020 with features from Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, Jackboy, Flipp Dinero and more. Aligned with the new crop of artists dubbed “ones to watch,” Pressa is on track in his journey to becoming a household name.

No stranger to releasing full bodies of work with mixtapes such as, Press MachinePress A Brick, and Prestige, 2020 was a prime display of Pressa’s growth and versatility as an artist, culminating with the release of his EP, Gardner Express. The EP features “OTM,” “96 Freestyle,” and “Head Tap” ft. Sheff G and Sleepy Hallow, which resulted in coverage from media juggernauts like Complex, a global Apple Music Beats 1 premiere with Ebro Darden.

Pressa is applying a renewed vigor to his music and collaborating with likeminded writers, producers and artists on the rise. Inspired by the diverse streets of Toronto and a multicultural Jamaican/Filipino upbringing, Pressa is eager to share his passion and unique music style with the world.

Case Closed: Young Dolph & Key Glock Are Trap’s Best Duo

    2.19.2021

Audio: Young Dolph & Key Glock – “Case Closed”

The Two Paper Route EMPIRE Rappers Bring Their Best Bars for a Flex-Heavy, Bandplay-Produced Anthem

    The Song:

Bouncing boss-life bars off one another with palpable chemistry, Young Dolph and Key Glock are a truly dynamic duo. Coming together with a series of escalating flexes, Dolph & Glock share Case Closed,” a new single. Produced by Paper Route EMPIRE‘s own Bandplay, who combines haunting vox synths with a boss-battle bassline and ominous keys, Dolph and Glock present an irrefutable argument that nobody can rack up or spend bands in the way that they can: “I put VS stones in my glasses/Stuffed a quarter mil in 20s in a mattress/It used to be who get the bomb off the fastest/Now a n**** make millions of ad-libs (yeah yeah!),” intones Dolph. Though they can’t help but boast about their ends, they never forget the circumstances from which they emerged: “Went from sleeping on the floor/Now my jewelry box froze,” rhymes Dolph in the song’s hook. “Case Closed” is the second collab of the year from the Dum & Dummer duo, following Green Light, a highlight single from Dolph’s Rich Slave (Deluxe) album.

The two Paper Route EMPIRE heavy hitters are preparing for a massive 2021. Dolph has already had a busy year, releasing the deluxe version of his Billboard Top 5-charting Rich Slave album, featuring 8 new tracks like the bombastic single. Large Amounts,” the luxury life anthem “Fast” (“I’ve got a billion dollar future, f*ck yesterday and the past,” asserts Dolph) and the simmering “Buy My Way To Heaven.” Key Glock, meanwhile, racked up 2.6 million views on his flashy video for Off The Porch,” to go along with 1.1 million Spotify streams. Key Glock and Young Dolph connected in 2019 for Dum & Dummer, a full-length collaborative project. Peaking at #8 on the Billboard 200, Dum & Dummer was a deluxe-sized showcase for the duo’s inimitable chemistry and unparalleled flexes. Dum & Dummer inspired a successful joint tour, during which Dolph & Glock sold over 43,000 tickets and sold out shows in multiple markets.

Stay tuned for updates from Paper Route EMPIRE about imminent Young Dolph and Key Glock releases.

Taleban Dooda Shares “No Eater,” A Candy-Coated Trap Banger

  • Press Release

Taleban Dooda Shares “No Eater,” A Candy-Coated Trap Banger

    2.19.2021

Video: Taleban Dooda – “No Eater

The Tampa Native 18-Year-Old Can’t Be Locked Down In His Latest Standout Music Video

    The Video:

Taleban Dooda captivates with his elastic melodies and pure, piercing tenor. With his new video single “No Eater,” Dooda demonstrates the fluid and playful cadences that have him rapidly rising in Florida and beyond. Bouncing atop a dancing guitar lick courtesy of producers Ayo Bleu (Lil Durk, NBA YoungBoy), MalikOTB (Rod Wave, Lil Durk), and Monique Winning (NLE Choppa, Jackboy), Taleban embraces his womanizing ways, but assures the opps that his luck with the ladies does not make him soft.

In the video, directed by Jolo, Dooda hosts a wild pool party, welcoming his homies and a bevy of baddies for an R-Rated afternoon. Released as Dooda celebrates a Tampa Bay Buccaneers Super Bowl, “No Eater” follows the recent T9ine collab “Chosen,” a gospel-influenced anthem that earned praise from Pitchfork and HipHopDX (who named the song one of the Best Hip-Hop Songs of 2021 So Far) and already has over 1 million streams across platforms. “No Eater” is available on all platforms via Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records.

Though Taleban Dooda only started rapping at the age of 15, the Tampa, FL native displayed a natural melodic ability that helps him stand out in a burgeoning Florida street rap scene. After working hard behind the scenes to build a backlog of bangers and gain inroads in his home state, Dooda scored a hit with “Tru Colors,” his first-ever release, racking up over 3 million streams, generating over 1.2 million views on its YouTube video, and reaching #18 on SoundCloud’s worldwide New & Hot chart. The teenager kept the momentum going with collaborations with his frequent rap partner Rees Money, and successful video singles like “2 In Da Morning” (1 million views) and “Dis Dooda,” which Vice named as one of the 24 Best Songs of September. Stay tuned for much more from the Green Light Music Group/Rostrum Records signee, who is currently featured on the cover of Spotify’s Fresh Finds: Hip Hop playlist, as he continues to develop into one of the South’s most exciting rap talents.

Curren$y Announces 2/26 ‘Collection Agency’ Project, Shares “Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs

    2.19.2021

Rap Icon Curren$y Announces Collection Agency, His Upcoming Project, Arriving February 26th via Jet Life/EMPIRE

The Jet Life CEO Releases Hazy New Single “Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs

The Prolific Emcee Flashes His Slick Lyricism On His Upcoming 10-Track Project, Which Features Larry June and Production from Harry Fraud, DjFresh, and More

    The Announcement:

Known for his prolific output and exquisite taste, Curren$y is one of rap music’s hardest workers. Preparing the newest project in his remarkable–and remarkably consistent–career, Spitta announces Collection Agency, an upcoming 10-track tape. Packed with the hazy production and detailed luxury life rhymes that have been thrilling Curren$y fans for over a decade, Collection Agency finds the New Orleans native in his bag, spinning witticisms about his triplet passions of women, weed, and muscle cars. Collection Agency boasts sleek and sumptuous sonic palette, reflecting the smooth sensibility of Curren$y’s beloved ’80s electro-funk and R&B. Highlights from the tape include “I Don’t Call,” in which the rapper brags about getting bands in a pandemic, the late-night saxophone-drenched “Jermaine Dupri,” and “Shout Out, which features Curren$y’s kindred spirit Larry June. With production from Harry FraudDj.fresh, Jet Lifer Trauma Tone, and more, Collection Agency arrives on February 26th via Jet Life Recordings/EMPIRE.

Along with the pre-order of Collection Agency, Curren$y officially releases his new single Kush Through The Sunroof” to DSPs. With an evocative title that proves Spitta’s unparalleled ability to paint a picture with his words, the Trauma Tone-produced “Kush Through The Sunroof” finds the rapper reminiscing on his come-up, noting that he worked hard to build the loyal fanbase and strong business that he has: “Real walker in the game/But first I had to crawl in it/Buckle down, did my thing, the game brought out the dog in me/The way I look at it, they all enemies/I took it back to my old energy.” In the video, shot and edited by Yusef Pozo, a chain-adorned Spitta kicks back with a beautiful woman to watch car showcase videos and listen to records (most notably, Marvin Gaye’s classic What’s Going On). “Kush Through The Sunroof” followed-up Misty,” the Collection Agency closing track, which hit the internet earlier this month.

Collection Agency is set to be Curren$y’s first new project of 2021, following a yet another busy year for the veteran rapper.

Justin Bieber’s Valentine’s Day TikTok Livestream Draws Over 4 Million Unique Viewers

    The Announcement:

This Valentine’s Day, superstar singer Justin Bieber teamed up with TikTok for “Journals live from the drew house,” a full-length LIVE performance. TikTok’s first-ever full-length single-artist LIVE performance,  #JournalsLive was a massive success, drawing over 4 million unique views over two broadcasts, making it the most-viewed single-artist livestream in TikTok history!

“Journals Live from the drew house” was a special moment for TikTok, but also for Justin, as it marked his first-ever performance of songs from his fan-favorite 2013 album JOURNALS. The buzz surrounding the Valentine’s Day performance caused a resurgence in the popularity of the album, ushering  JOURNALS past the 3 billion all-time streams landmark. Project highlights “All That Matters” and “Heartbreaker” reached charts in multiple countries, and the buzz surrounding the performance had a rising tide effect on the rest of the artist’s catalog–Bieber’s newest single “Anyone” ascended to the #1 spot on iTunes over the weekend.

With over 20.3 million followers–a 700k increase since the announcement of #JournalsLive–Justin Bieber is an active member of the TikTok community, using his account to reveal behind-the-scenes footage, partake in the latest trends, and more. His first-ever TikTok, which included a snippet of his hit song “Yummy” (which was a big TikTok hit with over 5 million video creations) generated over 117 million views. Justin declared his devotion to his wife Hailey with a stylish video soundtracked by his single “Anyone.” Justin is currently trending worldwide with his benny blanco collab “Lonely,” which has over 872k video creations and more than 5 billion video views.

After closing out 2020 with three smash singles — “Holy,” with Chance The Rapper, “Lonely” with benny blanco, and “Monster” with Shawn Mendes — Justin Bieber rang in the new year with a brand new single “Anyone,” and his return to the live stage in a blow-out NYE livestreamed concert. Justin continues to reign as one of the biggest artists in the world: the #1 artist on YouTube with 60+ million subscribers, the #2 artist on Spotify global with over 65 million monthly listeners, over 200 million in combined U.S. radio audience per week, three tracks in the Billboard Top 40, and three Grammy nominations and an American Music Award for his 2020 album Changes.

T-Pain, Hyperpop, and Anti-Valentine’s Anthems Take TikTok By Storm

  • Press Release

T-Pain, Hyperpop, and Anti-Valentine’s Anthems Take TikTok By Storm

    2.18.2021

TikTok Treats, Week of February 15th

    The News:

TikTok is a place where superstars of the past and present rub shoulders with emerging artists and the internet’s wildest memes. It seems as if that kind of variety should cause whiplash, but in the context of TikTok, these disparate artists and musical styles make a certain kind of sense. The platform’s emphasis on authentic creative expression ensures that each creator will bring a unique twist to a song or trend. Check out some of the songs, trends, and artists TikTok is vibing with at the moment:

    • Rap/R&B maestro T-Pain has made himself at home on TikTok, populating his page with highlights from his illustrious career. Earlier this year, T-Pain had a minor viral moment, when a clip of him and Slim Jxmmy of Rae Sremmurd live reacting to the song “Feet Pic” by MrSunChips racked up over 2 million views. T-Pain is going viral once again on the app this week with his 2014 DJ Mustard-produced banger “Up Down (Do This All Day). Powered by a dance created by @itsromebaby (which T-Pain acknowledged on his own page), “Up Down” is one of the top trending songs on the app, with over 380k video creations.
    • Rapper King Von tragically passed away in November, but he left behind a legion of loyal fans. The Chicago native was known for his gripping storytelling , and now a particularly dramatic moment in his song “Twin Nem” ft. Lil Durk is a trending sound on TikTok. The rhythmic grunts and call-and-response between Von & Durk provides a perfect prompt for sketch comedy, useful for anyone who’s too busy vibing to worry about being embarrassed. With over 115k video creations, “Twin Nem” has been used to soundtrack overzealous cousins at a family reunion, Andy’s toys coming to life in Toy Story, and the relatable moment when you forget you’ve muted yourself on video chat.
    • Plenty of TikTok users were feeling the love during Valentine’s Day week, as songs like The Fray’s “How To Save A Life” and Edith Whiskers’ cover of Edward Sharpe’s “Home” each earning an uptick in video creations. While the happily attached TikTok users chose a variety of songs to express their love, the single and unsentimental users decided on a single anthem–“F*cc Valentines” by Honcho Moonk. With over 298k video creations, many of which from the past week, “F*cc Valentines” allowed the anti-V-Day contingent to send a forceful and angry message, whether they were taking their anger out at the Valentine’s section of a store, bemoaning the deluge of lovey-dovey social media posts, or, like Oneya from @angryreactions, just feeling the anti-love vibes.
    • Combining glitchy electronic sounds and manipulated vocals with pop-friendly choruses, the nascent genre of hyperpop is rapidly growing in popularity on TikTok. 16-year-old artist ElyOtto’s appropriately-titled song “SugarCrash” is the latest hyperpop banger tearing up TikTok. Anticipated ever since ElyOtto shared a snippet in August, “SugarCrash” has more than 35k video creations on TikTok, partially inspired by an editing trend that juxtaposes the bright sonics of the song with a scary or awkward moment, or highlights a strange scene from an anime. The song’s TikTok success is reverberating in the real world–”SugarCrash” has over 10 million streams on Spotify, and recently reached the #1 spot on Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
    • TikTok is often a channel for expressing joy, but sometimes, you just need to scream your head off. Rising British club music star Shygirl’s song “UCKERS” (62k video creations) is the perfect soundtrack for that catharsis. At the start of the song, a series of blood-curdling screams give way to a syncopated beat, and TikTok users have used that transition to explore the benefits of healthy eating, show off creative Zoom still images, or to document a transformation of appearance.
    • Amidst all the bizarre trends and superstar stories that populate TikTok, the platform’s bread and butter is still providing a platform for emerging artists to find their audience. One such rising star is Leyla Blue, a singer-songwriter from New York City. When she created her TikTok account in November, Leyla had zero followers, but by posting every day–sharing her new and old songs, performing covers of songs by artists like Amy Winehouse, or just feeling a vibe–she’s built a following of over 90k. The Island Records-signed artist built much of her momentum with her sultry anthem “What A Shame,” which eventually surpassed 100k creations on TikTok. Leyla recently posted a video enthusiastically explaining how her TikTok followers helped “What A Shame” grow into a hit on Spotify, and to show that even seemingly out-of-nowhere TikTok hits are the product of hard work, not pure luck. Leyla has recently been using the app to promote “Gasoline,” her upcoming single.

All throughout February, TikTok celebrated Black History Month by honoring Black music with themed playlist, LIVE streams with artists like Kelly Rowland and Monica, and deep dives into music history with @songpsych. Today, TikTok announced even more Black History Month initiatives, including commissioned songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA, and TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration, a Black History Month finale event with performances from Snoop Dogg, Saweetie, and more. Leon Bridges, KAYTRANADA & more help TikTok honor Black music during BHM

  • Press Release

Leon Bridges, KAYTRANADA & more help TikTok honor Black music during BHM

    2.16.2021

Leon Bridges, KAYTRANADA, & more help TikTok honor Black music

    The Announcement:

No celebration of Black History Month is complete without a salute to the Black artists who shape the past, present, and future of American music. To pay special tribute to the Black community this month, TikTok shines a spotlight on Black music on and off the platform, creating themed playlists to celebrate Black music’s past, present, future & joy, hosting LIVE conversations and performances with Black artists, teaming with @SongPsych to delve into the history of Black music, and, in a first for TikTok, teaming with two of our favorite artists to commission two original songs!

“TikTok has become an incubator for Black creatives of all disciplines, and our goal is to make the playing field equitable for all. We’re excited to work with artists and creators like SongPsych to amplify the pillars of the past, present, future, and joy of Black music,” says Brandon Holman, Label Partnerships Manager at TikTok.  “I’m also really proud of our new program, TikTok for Black Creatives, and that we are focused on continuing to show our dedication to Black creators’ and artists’ advancement every month of the year.”

Original Songs by Leon Bridges & KAYTRANADA

Known for his golden voice and songwriting, Grammy Award winning R&B artist Leon Bridges is the perfect figure to provide a modern window into Black music’s illustrious past. For Black History Month, Leon connects with fellow Fort Worth resident Keite Young to premiere an impassioned cover of “Like A Ship,” a beloved under-heard 1971 gospel/soul hybrid gem by Pastor T.L. Barrett. Marked by ecstatic choirs and swelling organ, Leon’s version of “Like A Ship” is both a faithful interpretation of the original and of a piece with the rest of Leon’s R&B catalogue, illustrating how Black music’s spiritual roots continue to permeate popular culture.

A producer and artist who bubbled up from the Montreal electronic music underground, KAYTRANADA lives on the cutting edge. TikTok and KAYTRANADA are proud to premiere “Caution,” a brand new original song that seamlessly blends funk, disco, and house into a futuristic mix. Layering syncopated kicks, splashy snares, and energetic vocal samples, “Caution” explores another hotspot of Black music innovation: the block party.

Together, the two songs by Leon Bridges and KAYTRANADA point to an illustrious history of Black music, while paving a path forward for both traditional and boundary-pushing sounds. Both songs will be available first as TikTok sounds, and will be released to DSPs soon.

    Your Favorite Artists LIVE

During Black History Month, we’ve made it our mission to amplify Black voices. We’ve exclusively invited Black artists to host “Sound-Off In The Comments” interactive livestreams. In the past two weeks, we’ve aired LIVE conversations with R&B icons Ashanti and Monica. Ashanti chatted with TikTok creator and activist Jax James to talk about her career and the history of R&B music. Last week, Monica and TikTok creator and LGBTQ activist Ve’ondre Mitchell shared their skincare and haircare routines and discussed the progression of Black people in the beauty industry. Last night, Kelly Rowland hosted a LIVE conversation with with TikTok trailblazer and real estate queen @quenwilliams, celebrating the legacy Kelly has created, her influence in paving the way for so many young artist and black women, and all of the exciting things the Black community can and will accomplish.

We’ve also seen “Sound-Offs” from rising artists like Erica Banks, Coi Leray, Amorphous, and Ayzha Nyree. Stay tuned for many more livestreams, from Leon Bridges and more.

    Black Music History with @SongPsych

SongPsych is a new media brand that started on TikTok as part of the Creative Learning Fund in May 2020. Since then, SongPsych has grown to over 650K followers thanks to their unique voice and detailed explainers into all elements of music theory and the music industry. This month, we’ve enlisted @SongPsych to help us delve deeper into our favorite Black music, offering deep dives into genres (including lesser-known sub-genres of hip-hop), lists of songs that sample Black music icons, explorations of the music theory behind common Black musical techniques, and more. @SongPsych, and its intrepid host @dev_lemons, conducted interviews with renowned artists like Jon Batiste, Mario, Tierra Whack, Yung Baby Tate, and more

    Themed Playlists

From ragtime and jazz to disco and house to hip-hop and R&B, Black music never ceases to push the culture forward. To honor the history of Black music, our music team put together “Make Black Music,” a series of themed playlists that highlight a particular genre, era, or quality that makes Black music special. As the month progresses, the theme of the playlists shift from past (playlists highlighting Motown, rap classics, rock ‘n roll origins, and more), to present (featuring hip-hop hits, pop icons, and Afrobeats), to a glimpse of the future (house & electronic, hip-hop newcomers, future soul). The month concludes with a series of playlists celebrating the Joy of Black music. The “Make Black Music” playlists can be found on the “Discover” page and on the “Sounds” page.

TikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration

TikTok’s month-long celebration ends on a high note by celebrating artists that represent the past, present, and future of West Coast Hip Hop. Airing on Friday February 26th at 8pm ET and hosted by Karen Civil and ChallanTikTok LIVE Make Black History Celebration traces the evolution of California rap, featuring interviews and performances from iconic Cali artists like Snoop Dogg, Tyga, and Saweetie, each with a special backdrop that speaks to their West Coast roots. The 90 minute extravaganza takes the time to shine a spotlight on Black creators, offering a close look at this year’s Black TikTok Trailblazers.

    Community Support

There is no denying the cultural impact Black artists have had on TikTok and we are determined to continue to elevate the community. In addition to donating to trailblazing organizations like the Alvin Ailey Foundation (find the full details of TikTok’s Black History Month giving in its kickoff blog post), we’re continuing to develop our “TikTok for Black Creatives” incubator program, nurturing and developing 100 talented Black creators and music artists, helping to open doors for them to reach new heights in their careers.

We’re excited to continue honoring and supporting Black musicians on and off the platform this month and beyond. Follow along with #MakeBlackHistory as we celebrate Black musicians’ contributions to our platform and the culture at large.
