The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. Songs can trend on TikTok for a multitude of reasons, ranging from a popular remix, to a new dance, to a comedic trend, or an artist-initiated open verse challenge. Other times, songs bubble up due to organic enthusiasm from the app’s eager community of music lovers. Check out how some of this week’s songs grew to trending status:

Spring only just started, but the TikTok Community has their sights on an even warmer (or cooler?) time of year. A smash hit in 2015, Demi Lovato’s breezy “Cool For The Summer” resurfaced on TikTok this year, with multiple versions of the song reaching trending status. With over 2.9 million video creations to date, the most popular remix (slightly sped up from the original) first appeared alongside a dance by user @iamhibryda, who choreographed a gyrating motion that has been mimicked by countless users. Inspired by the song’s resurgent success, TikTok DJ @kuyamagik combined “Cool For The Summer” with Ginuwine’s “Pony,” creating a mashup that rivals this year’s trending “Toxic Pony” mashup in popularity. “Cool For Summer x Pony” has over 1.6 million video creations, soundtracking evil pranks, frisky pets, and more. The “Cool For The Summer” takeover eventually reached the ears of Demi Lovato themself, who announced last weekend that the sped up “Nightcore” remix would be available to stream on all platforms
Rap star and TikTok favorite Jack Harlow is tapping into TikTok’s appreciation for past hits with a new song of his own, one that samples an older hit with a modern twist. He’s begun teasing his upcoming single “First Class” which samples Fergie’s 2006 pop hit “Glamorous” and the TikTok community is loving it, driving the sound of the studio clip to over 22K creations ahead of the song’s release. Creators have been using the sound to admit they can’t get the video of Jack out of their head, display their excitement about the song’s upcoming release, and even to share the perfect drink recipe for getting ready for a night out. Along with teasing the song in the clip of him listening to it in the studio, Jack also used the sound on a recent behind-the-scenes clip into his GRAMMYs performance rehearsal with Lil Nas X and renowned celebrity choreographer Sean Bankhead.
Jack Harlow’s Fergie flashback is surprisingly not the only trend featuring the contributions of the former Black Eyed Peas singer. This week, creators of the TikTok community are putting their best lip-syncing chops on full display to belt out the lyrics of Fergie’s 2006 chart-topper, “Big Girls Don’t Cry” (501K+ platform and user-generated creations combined). The throwback inspired two trends, as creators invite one another to hold hands using Fergie’s emphatic lyrics, “Yes, you can hold my hand if you want to/’Cause I wanna hold yours too.” Other videos find creators unable to fight the urge to sing the catchy hook, “I hope you know, I hope you know/That this has nothing to do with you…” Whether they’re hilariously interrupting their girlfriend’s nap with their vocals, sharing their personal connection with the song, or simply singing during a solo car ride, these creators use the song to show the world how they are optimistic about healing from their past hardships.
Fresh off the release of his Billboard 200 chart-topping album 7220, Lil Durk is having a major moment on TikTok with his heartfelt track “What Happened To Virgil” ft. Gunna. With over 34.7K creations, the song is tugging at the heartstrings of TikTok users, as the title references the passing of iconic fashion designer and entrepreneur Virgil Abloh. The track’s popular lyric “Oh my God, what happened to Virgil?” is inspiring both somber and more lighthearted creations from those who reflect on Virgil’s passing, who can’t believe their former classmates are having children, and who wonder why their friends can’t handle their liquor. Lil Durk and Gunna have both been interacting with the sound on their own accounts, with Durk promising to drop the video for the song once the sound reached 10K creations.
The TikTok community is always looking for a boost of serotonin, especially in dark times. Singer Eddie Benjamin echoes the thoughts of creators everywhere who are yearning for brighter days with his new song, “Weatherman.” Previously previewing a snippet on his TikTok page, the Australian singer emphasizes his desire for a temperature outside that won’t kill his vibe. Boasting over 12K creations and 3 million Spotify streams since its February release, creators use the upbeat pop song to show off their outfit ideas for every season, document their everyday routines, and share their disappointment of the constant rainfall in their cities. Eddie Benjamin has also interacted with his song on his page, promoting it to his 53K followers, and lip synced the song with Maddie Ziegler in a video that generated over 8.7 million views.
TikTok has been instrumental in bolstering the popularity of Louisiana smashes like Kevin Gates’ “Thinking With My Dick,” which charted on the Hot 100 this year for the first time since its 2013 release, and last year’s “Touch Down 2 Cause Hell” by HD4President. In recent weeks, another hit from “The Pelican State” has been bubbling on the platform– “I Bet U Won’t,” a 2016 regional hit by Baton Rouge spitter Level and acclaimed New Orleans rapper/producer Mouse On Da Track. The song’s popularity on TikTok (58k video creations) comes from two distinct sources–the first is comedian Famous Amos, whose staggering dance to the song went viral on multiple platforms, who has been reposting creative re-interpretations of the dance on his TikTok. Another comes from Texas teenager @walker_sheppard, who performs elaborate dances to the song with help from his classmates. With over 150 million views on the #ibetyouwont and #ibetyouwontchallenge tags, “I Bet U Won’t” has the goods to be the next Bayou banger to find a wider audience thanks to TikTok.

TikTok has been a fertile ground for musical theater, transforming creative experiments like Emily Bear & Abigail Barlow’s GRAMMY-winning The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical and the Ratatouille-adaptation Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical! into full-fledged productions. Now, TikTok is taking the next step, producing its own musical… about itself! The musical, entitled For You, Paige will be performed on a stage in NYC and available to watch LIVE only on TikTok on April 14th. For You, Paige was written by Daniel Mertzlufft, the brains behind the Ratatouille musical, and it tells the story of a young TikTok creator’s journey to viral stardom. Released as he heads for an eventful weekend in Vegas, Glock shares “Grammys,” a cinematic mini-movie for a highlight from Yellow Tape 2 (Deluxe). Directed by Nick Mays, the video finds Glock flashing back to his youth, telling two distinct stories about his trap life, centered around his granny’s house in South Memphis. The first story examines Glock’s childhood, as an adolescent Glock dons his bright red Adidas and listens to his Memorex discman as he does dirty work for an OG. The second story depicts Glock as a hard-headed teenager, as he and his friends assert themselves as his neighborhood’s dominant crew with both force and finesse. Through it all, present day Glock roams his old neighborhood in a reflective mood, thinking about how his youthful misadventures prepared him for the limelight better than any classroom ever could.

The new video for “Grammys” arrives as Glock prepares to embark on “SiriusXM Hip Hop Nation Presents: The Yellow Tape Tour,” his first solo nationwide headlining tour, ten dates of which are already sold out. The new track is produced by ghost/\/ghoul, one of the first members to join TeamSESH back in 2011. Unlike most producers on the label, ghost/\/ghoul isn’t a frequent collaborator with BONES–most of the music from ghost/\/ghoul’s extensive discography is purely instrumental, captivating enough to thrill without vocals or rapped verses. In over 10 years in the TeamSESH collective, the two have only collaborated twice, on “WhiteZombie”(2012) and “LastOneThereIsARottenEgg” (2019), but fans won’t have to wait long for the next one. 2021 was a remarkably busy year for the prolific BONES, marked by five full-length albums including Scraps, his November collaboration album with TeamSESH producer Lyson, October’s ForbiddenImage (produced by cat soup), and July’s InLovingMemory, a dark and personal album that featured the single “WhiteBoyRick,” which has received over 2.4 million views on YouTube. An Old Country Song Bridges Generation Gaps, Pharrell Makes Dreams Come True, Coi & Nicki Take Over, and Chief Keef Assists With Emphatic Denials

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. This week brought trends from new and old hits, hot new rap songs and great old country tunes, and a lesson from a Canadian rocker on how to play a beautiful song. Take a look below to see what made TikTok tick this week:

The TikTok community is in a wholesome, reflective mood this week, sparked by the legendary Pharrell Williams’ lighthearted track “Just A Cloud Away.” Originally appearing on the 2013 Despicable Me soundtrack, the song is trending behind a then vs. now trend on the platform, in which creators ruminate on how their lives were years ago compared to how they are now. Creators are taking to the sound to reflect on how they thought they would have a significant other by now, their long-lasting friendship with their besties, and the evolution of the most heartwarming baby brother-sister duos. Pharrell even joined in on the fun with a video on his own account, adding to the 941.9K+ creations by jumping into his scenic pool and reflecting on how he wished he was in a pool as a baby.
A golden-voiced singer who had the potential to become the biggest country star in the world before he tragically passed away in 1989, Keith Whitley’s music effortlessly evokes a fond nostalgia for bygone times. In recent weeks, the TikTok community re-discovered Whitley’s 1985 song “Miami, My Amy,” a ballad about long distance love, and creators have been channeling the song’s wistful vibe in a trend that pays tribute to the kindness and good humor of elderly strangers. The song has over 39k video creations to date, including some that comment on Cracker Barrel wise cracks, sardonic reactions to ripped jeans, helpful veterans in fishing shops, and other situations that subtly comment on intergenerational interaction. Though the song was not one of Whitley’s biggest hits–the artist had 5 #1 Country hits in his too-brief career, and this song was not one of them–the newfound TikTok popularity of “Miami, My Amy” pushed the song past the 10 million stream mark on Spotify, where it is currently more popular than his bigger hits, and into the Top 20 of Spotify’s U.S. Viral 50 chart.
“Envolver,” by Brazilian artist Anitta, has exploded on TikTok in the past month. Now at +1.3M creates and +1.5B video views on the associated hashtag, the track started to trend after a video of Anitta performing the song went viral on TikTok (87.5 million views). Fans, impressed by Anitta’s dance moves in the video, took to TikTok to post videos of them attempting their own versions. All of this traction led to it being among the top 10 trending songs on TikTok in the US for 3 weeks in a row, peaking at #4. Anitta herself leaned into the trend posting tutorials and also ranking how well other people did her move. All of this culminated in the song reaching #1 on the Spotify Global Charts last week, making Anitta both the first Brazilian artist and first solo Latin female artist to hold this position.
Coi Leray and Nicki Minaj are among the TikTok community’s favorites, previously trending with songs such as Coi’s “TWINNEM” (3.7M+ creations) and Nicki’s “Do We Have A Problem?” (319.1K+ creations). Joining forces for their new single, “Blick Blick!” (17.2K+ creations), both rappers have creators in the mood for stunning beauty and hair transformations, as well as recreating Nicki’s look from the official video. Additionally, creators show off their best moves and encourage other users to recreate in their routines – such as this one, this one, and this one. Both Coi and Nicki have interacted with the sound on their own TikTok pages, promoting “Blick Blick!” to their millions of followers. The song’s TikTok success helped “Blick Blick” score a #37 debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
An ornate and emotional indie rock ballad from 2010, “Je te laisserai des mots” by Montreal’s Patrick Watso n has been a go-to song for TikTok creators looking to inject poignancy into their videos. The song’s heart-wrenching interplay of piano and violin is an ideal soundtrack for long-lost puppy reunions, helpful bits of mental health advice, and late night games of badminton (some ironic versions have also gained traction, including this video of a Great White Shark “trying to save divers from a cage”). Over 210k video creations later, Patrick Watson himself joined TikTok this week, introducing himself as the man behind the viral sound and sharing a short piano + string quartet performance of the song. Most recently, Patrick shared a three-part tutorial, not only teaching the world how to play the song’s gorgeous piano line, but also offering piano-playing tips that apply to pianists of all skill levels.
TikTok creators can create a trend out of even the smallest lyrical turn of phrase–and if that short phrase resonates with the community, it can lead to the song’s rise on the platform. Chicago rap hero Chief Keef’s recent track “Yes Sir” (132.3K+ creations) has been making waves on the platform due to the catchy way in which he raps the lyrics opposite of the track’s title: “No, sir.” Creators are comically taking to the sound to say “No, sir” to all the things and people in their lives that they’re refusing or declining. It’s the perfect sound for those who won’t let being moms stop them from having a hot girl summer, who never accept invitations to hang out, and who have become one with their braces and don’t want to get them removed.
Following the recent successes of artists such as Em Beihold, GAYLE, and Rachel Chinouriri, TikTok continues to prove that the platform is a great place for artists to preview unreleased music. Joining the list is singer Dylan Conrique, who went viral for previewing “Birthday Cake” (112K+ creations to date since its official release), a song dedicated to her best friend whose mother passed away. The piano ballad evokes the emotions of creators as they document their bedtime routines with their babies, capture intimate moments with their ill family members, and share their thoughts about their deceased loved ones. Dylan Conrique has also promoted the song to her 2.8M followers on TikTok, encouraging users to share their own lyrics with her open verse challenge.

Known in Memphis for his locked-in triplets and unapologetic realness, Jay Fizzle has been repping Paper Route Empire for more than half a decade. Today, Jay Fizzle shares the video for “4 HOS,” a clip that shows the world how he lives. Produced by PRE’s in-house maestro Bandplay, “4HOS” is a showcase for Fizzle’s drawly, double-dipping delivery, as he fits his flexes into a clever rhyme scheme: “VVS diamonds my logo, make that stick jump like a pogo/You n****s the popo, guy turn your ass to some dodo/I got my eyes lookin’ low-low.” In the video, Fizzle throws a function at a South Memphis studio, complete with bud, black lights, and beautiful women. “4 HOS” is the latest release from DonnaFizzle, Jay Fizzle’s upcoming project, hitting the streets soon via Paper Route Empire.

Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami is the first-ever “AFROPUNK Live Experience.” The first day of Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami brings discussion panels and an art exhibition, followed by two days of live music, great food, and other activations. The first in-person live event Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami takes place between May 20-May 22 at The Urban and surrounding grounds, located in the city’s historic (and historically Black) Overtown neighborhood.

Dancehall is once again a mainstream force, and Skillibeng is the genre’s reigning prince. The 24-year-old has established his name in his native Jamaica over the past few years, and now has eyes set on dominating the music industry beyond the Caribbean shores. Skillibeng’s thrilling debut album Crocodile Teeth The Album (released last October) and a recent signing to RCA Records are the perfect invitations for newcomers ready to discover Jamaica’s latest star. Skillibeng released his catchy breakout single “Brik Pan Brik” in 2019 and followed up in 2020 with what’s become his signature hit: “Crocodile Teeth”. The haunting single has since racked up over 9 million Spotify streams, and its virality caught the attention of Drake, Popcaan and Nicki Minaj, the latter of whom recorded a remix for the 2021 re-release of her acclaimed Beam Me Up Scotty mixtape. Skillibeng’s The Prodigy and The Prodigy: Ladies Only Edition mixtapes (released in 2020 and 2021, respectively) further accelerated his mainstream appeal, showcasing his versatility with trap, drill, traditional hardcore dancehall and more romantic tunes.

YEИDRY is a singer-songwriter who grew up between the Dominican Republic and Italy. She now spends her time writing and recording between Europe and the U.S. She is signed to RCA Records and Mushroom Music Group on the label side and Warner Chapell and Mushroom for publishing. 2021 was YEИDRY’s breakout year. She collaborated with J. Balvin, Damian Marley, Mozart La Para, and Emotional Oranges, and she performed alongside her heroes Mary J. Blige and Jazmine Sullivan at the Apollo Theater in Harlem as part of YouTube’s ad week. She made her festival debut at Austin City Limits, and later performed at the renowned Corona Capital Festival. She was the face of Spotify’s “Frequency” and “Equal” campaigns, culminating in her featuring on a billboard in Times Square, and her song “YA” earned the attention of Barack Obama, who named it one of his favorite songs of 2021. 2022 looks to be an even bigger year for YEИDRY–already, she has released her single “Mascarade” with Lous & The Yakuza and recorded an original song for Amazon’s film Hotel Transylvania 4. She is currently working on her debut album, and preparing to embark on her first-ever headlining tour.

Mavado, is a Jamaican deejay, singer and songwriter who hails from humble beginnings in his urban community of Cassava Piece, located in Kingston, Jamaica. Mentored by the legendary Bounty Killer, Mavado has been a fixture in the dancehall scene since 2004, when he released his breakthrough single, “Real Mckoy.” He has collaborated with the likes of Nicki Minaj, Snoop Dogg, Sean Paul, G-Unit, Akon, and DJ Khaled, who featured him on his GRAMMY-nominated Major Key album. He remains one of the most recognizable singers in dancehall music today.

While performing on some of the world’s most prestigious stages and contributing production to Major Lazer’s albums (Free the Universe, Peace is the Mission, Music is the Weapon), Walshy Fire has used his platform to shed light on rising talents within the Caribbean, helping to launch the careers of rising stars like Chronixx and Koffee. In 2019, Walshy released his first solo album, ABENG (licensed to Mad Decent Records/Because Music)–combining sounds from Africa and the Caribbean, pairing artists from both regions on tracks spanning afrobeats, dancehall, reggae, soca and EDM. The artist of Jamaican descent and longtime member of Black Chiney, a Miami DJ crew known for innovative, trailblazing mixtapes blending R&B and hip-hop with reggae/dancehall, Walshy Fire won a GRAMMY for his contributions on Rapture, the EP by Koffee.

In addition to the talented lineup of performing artists, Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami offers an exciting array of unique activations to entertain and enlighten attendees between sets. AFROPUNK partners with Black On The Block to bring he Spinthrift Market, a shop market full of talented makers, selectors and curators from all across the diaspora, and AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats, the literal embodiment of “food for the soul,” which provides event goers an opportunity to indulge in cuisines from renowned chefs and local food trucks. Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami is also partnering with Shopify to premiere an immersive screening celebrating Black entrepreneurship from AFROPUNK and Shopify’s Black Fashion Accelerator program, an intensive entrepreneurship program that will help prepare nine promising talents for long careers in the industry, culminating in a fashion show to be held this summer.

TikTok Treats, Week of March 21st

Mardi Gras Gives Kevin Gates a New/Old Billboard Hit, Italian Icons Hop On Board, and Many More TikTok Music Stories

The News:

Each week, the TikTok Treats newsletter gives a snapshot of the state of music on TikTok, touching on trending hits, emerging artists, superstar moves, ascendant memes, and much more. TikTok often feels like a portal linking digital and physical realities, and music is often the vessel through which TikTok and IRL meet. Check out the ways in which music helped make worlds collide on TikTok this week:

German rock band AnnenMayKantereit and German indie band Giant Rooks put their spin on Suzanne Vega’s 80s track “Tom’s Diner” in 2019 but the song has gained a second wind on TikTok in recent weeks. The bands are emphatically engaging with the song on the platform, with both AnnenMayKantereit and Giant Rooks posting clips of their live cover. Creators have been taking to the sound to display their patchwork pants technique, late night tattoo experiences, and their adorable babies being shocked by the range of voices in the song. The sound is seeing success on TikTok and beyond, garnering over 50.3K creations and claiming the #1 spot on Spotify’s Viral 50 Chart.
Kevin Gates’ raunchy rap banger “Thinking With My Dick” ft. Juicy J reached the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time this week, placing at #37 nine years after its original release. Gates can thank TikTok for the song’s late rise–”Thinking With My Dick” has over 491k video creations on the platform, many coming in the month of March. The song’s TikTok rise started with a clip from Mardi Gras in Gates’ native Louisiana, spotlighting a Southern gentleman with a blue collared shirt and flashy aviator sunglasses dancing to the song with a full drink in hand. The short clip transfixed the TikTok community, as fans across the country imitated the man’s look and cup-enhanced dance moves, as well as the energetic woman from the background of the original video. Some even have gone as far as to imitate the woman wearing a backpack who raises her hand at the end of the video. After a couple of days of watching the song trend, the man in the video revealed himself to be @Only1Barbosa, a native of Lafayette, LA, commenting on his unexpected virality with a video that has racked up over 11 million views. Since then, Barbosa, who sticks to his trademark sunglasses, has become a minor celebrity, recruiting over 390k TikTok followers and making club appearances around his home state.
The TikTok community continues to find ways to bring new context and comedic twists to classic songs. Inspired by Patsy Cline’s Willie Nelson-penned 1961 country hit, “Crazy” (134K+ creations), creators smirkingly share some of the craziest things they’ve done while dating their significant others. While some TikTok users describe extreme measures such as plastering their face all over their boyfriend’s car, others share their petty reactions to being cheated on – such as declining their ex’s college acceptance offers and sprinkling instant mashed potatoes in their yard. Offering a welcome contrast to all the toxic behavior, one creator used the sound to make it clear that they don’t have the time to do petty things to their exes.
The TIkTok community extended a hearty #CiaoLaura to iconic Italian singer Laura Pausini, who joined TikTok this week. The decorated artist immediately brought her authentic Italian vibe to TikTok, exclaiming “Oii!!” in her very first video on her new profile. The singer can claim Italian Icon status, as she was the first Italian female artist to win a Grammy Award in 2006, has won four Latin Grammy Awards, and earned a nomination for Best Original Song at last year’s Academy Awards. Her career took off in the nineties when she won the Newcomers prize at the 1993 Sanremo Music Festival, the same competition that brought TikTok heartthrobs Måneskin to the Eurovision stage in 2021. With over 1 million video views on her first video, and over 550k in three hours on her second, Laura is preparing TikTok for even more Italian excellence. Cin cin!
Laura Pausini was far from the only major artist to join TikTok this week. Iconic Montreal indie rockers Arcade Fire made their presence felt, as well. The band racked up over 2 million views on a video teasing their new single “The Lightning,” and kept the party going with TikToks that recapped their recent run of NYC shows. Puerto Rican artist Residente has also made his presence felt on the app, with his new Bzrp freestyle racking up over 289k video creations. The respected rapper kicked off his TikTok career by showing off his collection of GRAMMY awards (in a video that generated over 18 million views) and teasing his new single “This Is Not America” with a much-needed geography lesson.
The energy has been high on TikTok in recent weeks and it’s powered by Philadelphia hip hop duo 5Star’s collaboration “Cmonnn” with fellow Philly native Lay Bankz. An undeniably danceable track with catchy lyrics and equally catchy ad-libs, the track is sweeping through the platform with over 980.7K creations. Creators are putting their best moves forward as they coordinate their choreography with the booming beat and lyrics. The sound is perfect for those who want to hit some moves with their dad, with their besties before hitting the town, and even with a basketball as they attempt a dribble challenge.
Disney soundtracks hold a special place in TikTok creators’ hearts, previously propelling Encanto’s “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” (1M+ creations) to becoming the longest-running Billboard chart-topper in Disney’s history. The TikTok community’s love for songs from animated films shows no signs of abating, with 4*TOWN’s “Nobody Like U,” an original song from Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, currently trending on the platform. Boasting over 164.9K creations to date, the catchy pop track has creators sharing all things related to the film – including fan-drawn art, inspired nails, and videos that test out TikTok’s Turning Red Characters filter to find out which character they’re most like. In other creations, TikTok users point out the resemblance between themselves and the film’s characters.

Sacramento’s smoothest crooner, MarMar Oso, is off to a white-hot start in 2022. Just days after releasing his latest project, Good Intentions, the artist returns to share the video for the Luh Kel-assisted track, “Losing You.” The Swiff D-produced opening from the project toes the line between light-hearted and heartbroken that MarMar so masterfully balances, while Luh Kel offers a vocal counterpoint to MarMar’s refined inflection with his nimble flows and sharp tenor.

In the video, MarMar is seen walking down the street on a sunny day when he notices a house with an open door. Though the house appears quite plain from the outside, a mesmerized MarMar can’t help but feel drawn to it. As he enters, he’s caught off guard by the hanging vines and plant life engulfing the well-kept home when, out of the corner of his eye, he catches a quick glimpse of a goddess-like figure. He searches for this dream woman and ultimately finds her, but by the time their brief interaction ends, he’s left alone; caught up in the tangled weeds of infatuation. Accepting his fate, MarMar channels his inner-Destiny’s Child, singing, “We was on our Jay and Bey, and now you’re leaving me/To the left, to the left, to the left, don’t go/I guess I thought I was irreplaceable.”

Born in Hawaii and raised in Sacramento, MarMar Oso began singing at church when he was 2 years old, and hasn’t stopped since. In 2018, MarMar made his debut with the music video for “Lost Feelings” from his Mixed Emotions EP, the success of which allowed him to quit his part-time job at UPS to fully pursue music. He went on to take the world by storm with the viral success of the GOLD-certified “Ruthless (Nice Guys Always Finish Last),” from his 2019 debut album, Oso Different, which boasts over 178 million streams on Spotify and over 37 million views on YouTube. Two of rap’s most exciting brands, Rolling Loud and RapTV, put on a SXSW showcase that closed the Austin festival on a high note. Hosted at the famous Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater, the two-night event was the most exciting event of the weekend, transforming the legendary venue into a mini-festival grounds with custom decor, fast-selling merch, and an eye-popping activation from event sponsor BARS, by Meta. Rolling Loud & RapTV’s unforgettable party featured a stacked lineup that placed a special focus on rising artists and local heroes–each of the 40+ performing artists went all out to make a memorable impression on the sold out crowd. Star DJs OG Chase B, DJ Scheme, and DJ Five Venoms pumped up the buzzing crowd between sets.

The showcase brought headlining performances from Don Toliver and Sheck Wes, who closed each night with invigorating performances of their massive hits, and played host to a sizable contingent of Texas rappers, including Trae The Truth, who dropped a surprise album during his performance, Tay Money, TisaKorean, and many others. Rolling Loud and RapTV channeled the spirit of SXSW by shining a spotlight on some of rap’s hottest rising stars, including rage-happy Ken Car$on, YSL fire-breather Yung Kayo, melodic master Dro Kenji, and San Antonio’s own Mike Dimes, who impressed with his charismatic and lyrical approach to Texas rap. Perhaps the most memorable newcomer was JELEEL!, blessed with golden pipes and tremendous athletic ability, which he showed off with backflips, sky high split jumps, and other feats of strength.

2021 was a remarkably busy year for BONES, marked by five full-length albums including Scraps, his November collaboration album with TeamSESH producer Lyson. October’s ForbiddenImage immediately followed July’s InLovingMemory, a dark and personal album that featured the recent single “WhiteBoyRick,” which has received over 2.4 million views on YouTube. In March, BONES released PushingUpDaisies, a full-length collaborative album produced by TeamSESH producer Deergod. Featuring the single “PopRocks,” which earned praise from Stereogum, the album thrives on the impeccable chemistry between producer and rapper. Earlier in 2021, BONES shared his BURDEN album and released albums recorded under the moniker surrenderdorothy onto DSPs for the first time ever.

Rolling Loud and RapTV, two of the world’s preeminent hip-hop brands, are partnering to present a two-day hip-hop music showcase set to take place at 8pm on Friday, March 18, and Saturday, March 19 at the iconic Stubb’s Waller Creek Amphitheater.

Returning to Austin for another set of unforgettable showcases, the hip-hop festival juggernaut Rolling Loud tapped RapTV, the largest hip-hop social media platform, to expand its presence in the Red River Cultural District. The two major brands worked together to create one of the most highly anticipated music events of the 36th annual SXSW.

Known for their availability to curate FOMO-inducing lineups each year, Rolling Loud has done it again, enlisting some of today’s hottest hip-hop acts and most promising newcomers to perform at this year’s pop-up in Austin. The News:

A couple folks from the TikTok team are in Austin for SXSW Music this week, let us know if you’d like to meet up! TikTok’s Head of Music Partnerships and Content Operations Corey Sheridan will chat with emerging artist Sadie Jean about her success on the community-driven video platform and its impact on her artistry. Sadie Jean, the 19-year-old Orange County native’s first-ever song “WYD Now?” has become a certified sensation on the app, thanks to the power of the #OpenVerseChallenge — a TikTok format that invites other creators to duet with her during an instrumental opening on her song.

This week brings new rap hits, old pop chestnuts, open verse remixes, and more music stories that only could’ve started on TikTok:

Rapper and record producer Russ has had the TikTok community in an excited frenzy since teasing his catchy, boastful track “Handsomer” (39.8K+ creations) at the end of January. Upon the song’s release a few days later, TikTok creator @jacobparker.ca asked Russ to do an “open verse” challenge for the song so that creators can rap their own verse over the instrumental. Russ happily obliged, spawning over 17K creations under the sound, including the most popular creation by rising rapper Ktlyn in which she raps to the beat from a woman’s perspective. The massive success of her verse on the platform led to an official remix (29.3K+ creations) of the song, which ascended to #1 on Apple Music’s All-Genre Singles chart and #60 on the Billboard Hot 100 this week. The remix is sparking creations from moms-to-be participating in the #HandsomerDanceChallenge, avid gym-goers, and married moms who can’t relate to the lyrics but still jam to the song.
Appropriate for Women’s History Month, the TikTok community is showing love to female creators. Inspired by Pardison Fontaine’s “Hoop Earrings” (78.5K+ user-generated and platform-generated creations to date), Black creators are taking a moment to celebrate themselves and highlight their accomplishments. Using Pardi’s emphatic lines, “If you a black girl/If you a black girl/Do your thang,” Black women on the platform post their best selfies, showcase their artwork, and share affirmations to other Black women.
It’s Sleazy’s world and we’re all just living in it. Kansas City rapper SleazyWorld Go is one of the hottest rappers on TikTok right now, and his song “Sleazy Flow” is offering creators the chance to strut their stuff. The song has over 100k combined video creations, many of which coming in the last week, as creators respond to the song’s taunting lyrics or comment on rising gas prices. “Sleazy Flow” even made its way to Lil Baby, whose lip sync video using the song has over 8 million views. Sleazy’s success on TikTok has him on an upward trajectory, as the young rapper just signed a new record deal.
Sam Tinnesz’s powerful 2017 track “Legends Are Made” is experiencing a revival on TikTok, with over 563k video creations on the platform. Icewear Vezzo recently shut it down as a headliner during 313 Day festivities in his hometown of Detroit, including a “Live From The Streets” showcase with Lil Durk, and now he’s ready to feed his fans with more new music. Coming through with mayhem on his mind, Vezzo shares “First 48,” a sinister new song and video. Tip-toeing atop low-note piano plonks and thuds of resonant 808s, courtesy of producer Smerfbeats sampling the theme song from a long-running true crime series on A&E, Vezzo chirps at his opps, warning them that he’s not one to make empty promises: “Don’t be lackin, you outta bounds, you better know your place.” In the video, Vezzo shines bright with a wall of chains and a wad of cash as he mobs out of his Maybach his Iced Up Records associates. “First 48” follows the recent video single “Richer Than My Opps,” each arriving in anticipation of Rich Off Pints 3, Vezzo’s next project, coming soon.

AFROPUNK events are designed to promote the kind of cultural exchange that brings together members of the African diaspora through food, dance, tech, art and stimulating conversations. Today, AFROPUNK announces that ChocQuibTown, Michael Brun & Friends, and Silent Addy have been added to the lineup of Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami. The three day event brings a wide-ranging collection of musicians, artists, entrepreneurs, and activists to Miami, brought together by their connection to the Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latinx communities. Joining budding Afrobeats superstar Rema on the lineup, the three new additions contribute to a vibrant and diverse lineup of artists who provide new spins on traditional styles.

Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami is the first-ever “AFROPUNK Live Experience.” The first day of Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami brings discussion panels and an art exhibition, followed by two days of live music, great food, and other activations. The first in-person live event Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami takes place between May 20-May 22 at The Urban and surrounding grounds, located in the city’s historic (and historically Black) Overtown neighborhood.

As the passionate, soulful voice of Colombia’s GRAMMY-winning trio ChocQuibTown, Gloria “Goyo” Martínez has become one of the most rousing and conscious lyricists in Latin music. The Afro-Colombian singer, rapper, and composer has also been championing more inclusivity and equality for women and the Afro-Latinx community since her arrival in the public eye. On their latest album, 2020’s ChocQuib House, the collective pays tribute to their origins, the hub where their sound was born, over slinky R&B and infectious Afro-Colombian beats. The album arrived amid a vulnerable time for the black community as institutional racism once again came to the forefront of political discourse due to the murder of George Floyd. Via song and her social media presence, Goyo continues to empower communities of color, while remaining a formidable voice for gender equality, evidenced by the group’s latest single, “Que Lástima,” featuring Sech, an empowering statement on women’s rights amid toxic relationships.

Born to a Haitian father and Guyanese mother who loved music, Brun’s influences stretched from the percussion-heavy Rara and Afro-groove music of his native Haïti, the dancehall and reggaeton soundsystem parties of Port-au-Prince, through to Hip-hop and RnB. His passion and commitment to changing the narrative of Haïti, and elevating its people through culture and music have seen him tour the world, collab with superstars like J Balvin, Win Butler and Mr. Eazi, sell out multiple headlining US tours and notch up tens of millions of streams across singles and acclaimed projects like his debut album, Lokal and last year’s Melanin EP.

Known for hosting popular parties in the Miami area, Silent Addy‘s incendiary DJ sets and behind-the-scenes work as a producer earned him co-signs from Major Lazer and Sean Paul and have established him as a mainstay in the global Dancehall scene. Between discovering up and coming dancehall artist Projexx, collaborating with Ape Drums and starting Bashment Records with follow DJ/producer Disco Neil, Addy has created an outlet to lead the next generation of dancehall and Caribbean culture and take it to the next level.

In addition to the talented lineup of performing artists, Planet AFROPUNK Miami: LIVE offers an exciting array of unique activations to entertain and enlighten attendees between sets. AFROPUNK partners with Black On The Block to bring he Spinthrift Market, a shop market full of talented makers, selectors and curators from all across the diaspora, and AFROPUNK’s Bites ‘n Beats, the literal embodiment of “food for the soul,” which provides event goers an opportunity to indulge in cuisines from renowned chefs and local food trucks. Planet AFROPUNK Live: Miami is also partnering with Shopify to premiere an immersive screening celebrating Black entrepreneurship from AFROPUNK and Shopify’s Black Fashion Accelerator program, an intensive entrepreneurship program that will help prepare nine promising talents for long careers in the industry, culminating in a fashion show to be held this summer.
