The Video:

CEO Trayle separates himself from the pack with his villainous pen and devious delivery. Unfazed as his opposition flounders, Trayle teams with fellow Atlanta-based riser Baby Drill to share the new video single, “Brody Trippin.” The track finds the pair of tough-talking street rappers taking stone-faced amusement in their mismatched opposition’s inadequacies as they perfect their hustle: “Yo mama say don’t hang with us, we criminals/N****s don’t talk that s*** on IG, post subliminals.”

The video for “Brody Trippin,” directed by Decat, sees Trayle and the Young Nudy-co-signed Baby Drill hauling more hardware than Home Depot employees, wearing black hoodies in place of orange aprons as they hatch their plot. Navigating concrete corridors with power tools in tow, the scenes appear to capture a heist in progress, before the pair finds themselves surrounded by amps in a studio. With the kind of noise they’re making, they don’t need to bust open vault’s to get a bag.

“Brody Trippin” arrives following Trayle’s highly acclaimed mixtape, HH5, which Pitchfork gave its coveted Best New Music designation. HH5 establishes Trayle as one of the slickest talkers in a stacked ATL scene, twirling his soft-spoken and erudite delivery like a cartoon villain twirls his mustache. The Chicago Native and MIT Professor Investigates Hand Signals and Enters an Internet Rabbit Hole in the Latest Video from His Acclaimed 2022 LP DRILL MUSIC IN ZION

The Video:

Lupe Fiasco weaves his lyrics into dense webs of double-meaning, encouraging his listeners to put together the puzzle pieces he teases out with his allusive wordplay. Taking his mythology into his own hands, Lupe shares the video for “PRECIOUS THINGS,” his latest music video. A Soundtrakk-produced highlight from his acclaimed LP DRILL MUSIC IN ZION, blessed with a hook from Nayirah, “PRECIOUS THINGS” finds Lupe speaking on the evolutionary miracle that is the human hand, exploring the ways we use our hands to fight, feel, and communicate: “I asked for ‘Okays,’ I got, ‘Up yours’ and ‘Go aways’/Shoo gestures and throat slicers, the motion’s made/Give me a sign when we can talk through a plan/But my hands was like ‘Fam, you can talk to the hand,’ damn,” spits Lupe.

Produced by Alberto Angelini, the video for “PRECIOUS THINGS” tells a story through screen-recorded desktop applications, with an unseen user delving deep into an internet rabbit hole inspired by Lupe’s lyrics. Guided by fan communities, comment sections, and old-fashioned articles, the explorer researches the origins of Lupe’s hand signals, his linguistic gymnastics, and his esoteric worldview. The user gathers data on academic search engines, looks for clues in articles from websites like HotNewHipHop, scours Google Earth, and even resorts to posting questions on Quora, but the answer to the mystery remains elusive. The video takes full advantage of YouTube’s new “pinch-and-zoom” feature, allowing viewers to zoom in on all the screenshots that make up the video and investigate the mystery with their own hands.

Released on June 24th, 2022, DRILL MUSIC IN ZION earned critical acclaim from NPR, Complex, The FADER, and many others, including Vinyl Me Please, who wrote “At their best, Lupe’s bars are as visually and phonetically pleasing as popped bubble wrap.” The product of a burst of thoughtful spontaneity, Lupe created DRILL MUSIC IN ZION over a short period, diving into a folder of beats sent by Soundtrakk and emerging with a fully-realized album in just three days (“Sometimes deadlines are lifelines,” says Lupe). The album is home to highlights like “NAOMI,” in which Lupe fuses playful political analysis with poignant emotional resonance, and “MS. MURAL,” which continues a series of songs that started on 2014’s Tetsuo & Youth (“Mural”) and continued with his last album DROGAS WAVE (“Mural Jr.”), and the jazz-inflected title track, which slyly comments on how art created amidst strife becomes commodified entertainment for the masses. Beyond DRILL MUSIC IN ZION, 2022 was a massive year for the iconic Chicago rapper. He celebrated the 15th anniversary of Lupe Fiasco’s The Cool, recently certified Platinum by the RIAA, and launched “LFT,” an NFT program that allows fans to get closer than ever to Lupe. He blessed his fans with archival releases and loose singles, including the self-produced “100 Chicagos” and “Galveston,” an Apple Music exclusive created in observation of Juneteenth. In the fall, Lupe started his position as a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he teaches “Rap Theory and Practice.” The rapper is currently teaching his first semester of the course, with plans to continue in the future. Beyond music, Lupe continues to focus on the community organizations he founded, including We Are M.U.R.A.L, The Neighborhood Start-Up Fund, Society of Spoken Art, and his cross-cultural content venture, Studio SV.

With more music and other ventures on the way, Lupe Fiasco has entered a new chapter in his career, but he’s not done growing.

L.A. rapper 03 Greedo came into his own on a series of mixtapes that began with 2016’s Purple Summer. His multi-faceted rhymes were heavy on references to drugs, struggle, and fame, and he churned out quality material at a prolific rate. The Video:

With a movie star’s charisma and an auteurist eye for detail, Key Glock is an avowed cinephile who channels his love of film into his music and videos. Paying homage to an iconic filmmaker, Key Glock shares his new cinematic video for “Spike Lee.” Over crisp, classic Memphis production from Blazerfxme and AIMONMYNECK, Glock floats over the instrumental as he boasts the ascendant lifestyle his tireless hustle affords: “I made it off the block, then made a couple million, then got me a spot out there by the white people/Just f****d around and spilled some Wock’ on my wife beater.”

The cinematic clip for “Spike Lee” places Key Glock in the director’s chair as he adds his own unique touch to two of the titular auteur’s most iconic films: He Got Game (1998) and Do The Right Thing (1989). For the basketball-focused former, Glock appears as both an actor and director, shouting instructions from the director’s chair as his double crosses up defenders on the court. Directed by AZae Production, the video uses camera trickery to dramatize the conversation between the song’s two characters. Dressed in all black, C4 smirks and counts his cash, while the orange-clad Trayle attempts to resist his charms and keep his life on the straight-and-narrow. “Alter Ego 2” is one of the key tracks from HH5, Trayle’s most recent mixtape.

Listening to his brother rap, Critch began to eventually do the same. Born in 1998 in Clinton Hill, Critch wrote raps at a young age, but wasn’t recording until he was of preteen age. Rappers such as Lil Wayne, Fabolous, and Max B dominated Critch’s listening habits and became major influences in his own music career.

Yella Beezy made his name in the industry the traditional way, building up a massive local fanbase in his hometown of Dallas before winning the support of DJs across the country. Celebrating 10 years of his culture-shifting classic debut album, the multi-platinum rapper-producer shares Finally Rich (Complete Edition). Adding 7 previously unreleased tracks, including a collaboration with Wiz Khalifa on “Rider,” Finally Rich (Complete Edition) is available everywhere now via Interscope Records.

Originally released on December 12, 2012, the seismic impact of Finally Rich sparked waves that continue to reverberate throughout popular music a decade later. The album’s innovative soundscapes, crafted in part by Chicago sound architect Young Chop, combined with Keef’s mutated melodies and off-kilter turns of phrase to create a massive moment for the then-ascendant genre of drill. The landmark album set the stage for the Chicago-born genre’s global takeover, and Keef’s unapologetic energy and singular vocal style influenced an entire generation of rappers (an incomplete list of his admirers includes 21 Savage, Lil Uzi Vert, Playboi Carti). Rated by Pitchfork, Rolling Stone, and many other publications as one of the best rap albums of the 2010s, Finally Rich changed the face of music, established Sosa as a globally recognizable icon and shifted the center of rap culture back to the streets.
