The Background:

Rot Ken is a rapper with a rare eye for the little details. Fueled by a childhood watching music videos on his family television, the Georgia rapper has a widescreen, auteurist understanding of rap that’s stuck with him to this day. His recent album Free Me is full of tracks that foreground arresting sensory images and establish Rot Ken as a stylist with few parallels. Kindred spirits and key figures in the hip-hop underground, BONES, Xavier Wulf, and Eddy Baker command legions of loyal fans who’d follow them wherever they go. Teaming up for a cross-country sojourn to celebrate their joint and solo accomplishments, the three underground kings announce the “BONES x Xavier Wulf x Eddy Baker: InLovingMemory Tour,” presented by Live Nation and Rolling Loud, kicking off this May. The upcoming tour is the first by BONES in four years, and the first-ever co-headlining tour by these three artists.

Named after a 2021 album by BONES, the “InLovingMemory Tour” tour begins on May 20th at Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, making stops across the U.S. in Chicago, Atlanta, Denver and more before wrapping up in Phoenix at The Van Buren on June 22nd.

Tickets will be available starting with presales from Wednesday, April 5th with the general onsale beginning Friday, April 7th at 10 AM local time at XX.com.

The tour announcement and the “AirplaneMode” video continues a big year for BONES. The TeamSESH CEO recently shared TheWitch&TheWizard, a haunting album created with longtime TeamSESH producer Greaf, a close collaborator of BONES who co-helmed his surrenderdorothy and OREGONTRAIL side projects. Most recently, BONES shared the long-awaited music video for his viral hit “AirplaneMode.” In March, BONES and Eddy Baker teamed up for “YellowStone,” the first single from Jones Peak, their upcoming collaborative album. Late last year, Summer Walker shocked the world when she shared a video that departed from her usual style–instead of singing lovelorn R&B, the pregnant artist spat a deft rap verse and twerked to her heart’s content. “I’m NOT a rapper,” Summer clarified, “I just wanted to do hood rat stuff with my friend.”

That friend was St. Louis rapper Sexyy Red, and one listen to her music demonstrates how she could’ve convinced Summer to get down.

Born and raised in St. Louis, Sexyy Red makes unapologetically raw rap music, specializing in sexually frank lyrics that are as quotable as they are unrepeatable in polite company. The rising rapper, who gets her name from her flame-red hair, is trending on all platforms, including TikTok and Twitter, with her song “Pound Town,” a bass-boosted Tay Keith-produced banger. With over 1.15 million on-demand streams in the week ending on March 23 and lyrics that people can’t stop quoting (“I’m outta town, thuggin with my rounds”), “Pound Town” has established itself as the official anthem of Spring Break in Miami (where Sexyy searches for “all the hoochie daddies”) and beyond.

Defined by Tay Keith’s pounding piano line and Sexyy’s supremely chill Southern drawl, “Pound Town” is a song about taking pride in your body and being unafraid to express exactly what you want. The Background:

Kenzo Balla evokes both the ecstasy and the peril of New York street rap. The Bronx artist serves up chilly bars over hammering drill beats for stylish, yet raw anthems that are drawing the attention of the world by the day. Teaming with frequent collaborators TG Crippy (his brother) and Jay Da Chaser, he blends those elements on tracks like “OOTAZ,” which drips with adrenaline and confrontation. While the track and others like it evoke unsettling force, they’ve also become the soundtrack of functions across the East Coast, and Kenzo wouldn’t have it any other way. Growing up in the BX, everyone knew each other and attended the same parties, but as he became a teenager, the drama escalated. Kenzo realized he’d have to change his lifestyle to survive. A certified legend of the Bay Area rap scene, J. Stalin built his legacy with a no-nonsense approach to his art. Getting straight to business as usual, Stalin returns to double down on a classic with “Don’t Front Pt. 2,” from his recent project, Prenuptial Agreement 2. Featuring a soaring hook from Baton Rouge’s Big Breaux, the sequel to Stalin’s 2010 mob music players’ anthem, “Don’t Front,” from the original Prenuptial Agreement might slow things down with it’s R&B-sampling instrumental, but Stalin’s desire for reticence in his romantic affairs is unchanged: “I want the pick of the litter, I don’t want none of them b*****s/The cute one that don’t want me that keep turning down them n****s.”

The Thakur Media-directed video for “Don’t Front Pt. 2” was shot at the same white chapel featured on the album’s cover. While Stalin’s snow-white Jaguar coupe matches the scenery, his attire matches the black veil and lingerie of his leather-clad lover in the clip. Though the two embrace like a slow dance while Big Breaux sings the track’s seductive hook, Stalin separates like a clean break whenever it’s time to deliver his verses, keeping his priorities intact to handle business.

Technology company with a rich hip-hop history, Serato works tirelessly to facilitate and inspire producers to be as creative as they can. In the Serato Edition of Mass Appeal’s acclaimed series Rhythm Roulette, Grammy award winning producer DJ Khalil demonstrates the potential of Serato’s latest product: Serato Studio 2.0, equipped with the revolutionary audio separation technology Serato Stems. Recently awarded for his work on Kendrick Lamar’s Mr. Morale and the Big Steppers album, Khalil is an expert at transforming bits and pieces of existing records into soulful, cinematic and lived-in beats, and Rhythm Roulette shows how Serato helps unlock his creativity, removing technical obstacles and allowing him to loop and flip more freely.

In the video, the L.A.-based Khalil ventures to the legendary Amoeba Music, offering a massive selection of gems for him to stumble upon. A blindfolded Khalil selects three random records, and returns with releases by The Delfonics, James Reese and The Progressions, and The Coupe De Villes. Using Serato Stems and Studio’s powerful sampler, Khalil quickly and easily selects the moments of the song to sample, and instantly isolates the drums, topline, bass, and melody, taking bits, pieces and manipulating them to his own devices.

“Just being able to separate out those drums and create a loop that had all the music in…now you have unlimited breaks, in my opinion,” says DJ Khalil.

The final product combines Khalil’s samples with some original keyboard melodies to become a heavenly and hard-hitting instrumental that speaks to the “essence of hip-hop.” Towards the end of the video, Khalil takes time to marvel at the technological advancement from turntable breakbeats to digital audio separation.

The Fifth Anniversary edition of Baja Beach Fest has the makings of an unforgettable event. Wisin Y Yandel return to Baja Beach Fest for the final time together, headlining the festival as part of their “La Última Mísion” farewell tour. Tego Calderon’s performance at Baja Beach Fest will be one of only two performances in Mexico by the legendary reggaetonero this year, as part of his “La Última Receta” tour.

Beyond the headliners, Baja Beach Fest 2023 boasts an impressive lineup, with over 50% of the lineup’s artists playing BBF for the first time ever. Among the most notable new names includes ascendant superstar Eladio Carrión, Ivy Queen, the pioneering “Queen of Reggaeton,” and first wave of reggaeton veterans Alexis Y Fido. Featuring Contributions From Nine Talented Producers, Including Acclaimed Artists such as Gender Amplified Founder Ebonie Smith and Boston Chery, the Gender Amplified Sound Pack Will Be Available to All Users of Serato Products Later This Year

The Announcement:

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Serato has collaborated with Gender Amplified on an official sample pack to be released later this year and available to all Serato Studio users. The pack features 69 original sounds that were created using a collection of iconic synthesizers and cutting-edge instruments at Hyperballad Studio in Brooklyn. Tapping into the endless possibilities of reimagining sounds through sampling, live tracking and found sound recordings, the producers collaborated in focused groups to design a diverse and future-nostalgic collection of lo-fi beats and genre-defying sounds.

The Gender Amplified Sound Pack will be available later this year as a free download via the Serato Studio Sounds page on the Serato website.

Gender Amplified was created in 2007, when president and founder Ebonie Smith organized a one-day conference entitled “Gender Amplified: Women & Technological Innovation in Hip Hop” as part of her thesis as a student at Barnard College. In the years since, Gender Amplified has evolved into a non-profit that supports women in all stages of their journey in music production through workshops, mentorship and networking opportunities. In addition to her work with Gender Amplified, Smith works as a senior engineer and producer at Atlantic Records and has achieved accolades for her work as an award-winning producer, audio engineer, and songwriter on Hamilton(Original Broadway Cast Recording), Janelle Monáe and Cardi B.

“Our community of producers was introduced to Serato Studio by (Artist Relations Manager) OP Miller,” says Smith of the genesis of the collaboration. “They have found it very useful and helpful, and have been inspired by the technology that underpins it and drives it. When the opportunity arose for Gender Amplified’s voice to be part of the unique sounds that are offered in Studio, we thought it was a great idea.”

The creation of a sound pack offers a learning opportunity for the producers to dive into aspects of music production that are unique to this process. “Making a good sample pack isn’t exclusively about the sounds themselves but the sonics, the timbre and the sound design associated with each one shot or loop,” shares Smith. “I’m excited for us to get into the studio, to tear into some vintage analog equipment, and get into the nuts, bolts and science of audio production for samples specifically.”

Krithi Rao is one of the producers who was part of the sessions, and is excited by the prospect of creating sounds that will facilitate music-making for others: “I always thought it must be so cool for those who create sounds and sample packs to know that so many people are using sounds that they created. That must be the best feeling; I want to feel that!”

The Background:

Jay Critch may very well be the answer to New York’s calls for representation in the rap game. As a young kid, Jay Critch was fascinated by his older brother’s music. Listening to his brother rap, Critch began to eventually do the same. Born in 1998 in Clinton Hill, Critch wrote raps at a young age, but wasn’t recording until he was of preteen age. Rappers such as Lil Wayne, Fabolous, and Max B dominated Critch’s listening habits and became major influences in his own music career.

Fresh out of jail and ready to reclaim his coveted spot in the rap game, Los Angeles legend 03 Greedo shares Halfway There, his first project of all-newly recorded music since 2018.

Recorded in the months since his January release at Houston’s Sugar Hill Studios, Halfway There benefits from Greedy’s endless font of melodies and peerless ability to write fully-realized songs in a matter of minutes. Halfway There arrives alongside a documentary that takes a revealing look at what Greedy’s been up to since his release from prison in January.

Spanning 33 tracks, Halfway There provides an embarrassment of riches, a gift from a rapper who knows his loyal fanbase has been waiting a long time. Greedy’s songwriting retains all of the hallmarks that made him one of the West Coast’s most beloved artists: effortless taffy-like melodies, slick turns-of-phrase that become earworm hooks, expressively unfiltered lyrics, and the ability to flat-out spit when the situation calls. Halfway There‘s origins in the Lone Star State have a major impact on the sound; Greedy has always combined his West Coast origins with his love of Southern trap, and that influence is felt through the contributions by trap architects like Lex Luger and Purps of 808 Mafia, and appearances by Southern rappers like Maxo Kream and Peewee Longway.

Still, they can take Greedy out of California, but they can’t take the California out of him–many of the tape’s highlights, including the breezy “Coi Leray Diamonds” ft. The Background:

L.A. rapper 03 Greedo came into his own on a series of mixtapes that began with 2016’s Purple Summer. His multi-faceted rhymes were heavy on references to drugs, struggle, and fame, and he churned out quality material at a prolific rate. He broke through to an even larger audience after signing a record deal, but not even a month after the release of his 2018 debut studio album God Level, he was sentenced to 20 years in prison for drug trafficking. He began serving his time in the summer of that year but issued a statement saying he intended to keep making and releasing new music while incarcerated. In 2019, Greedo released Still Summer in the Projects, the Kenny Beats produced project Netflix & Deal, with features from Freddie Gibbs, Vince Staples, Buddy and more, and in 2020, he dropped Load It Up, Vol. 01, produced by RonRonThe Producer. Greedo released his mixtape, Free 03, in January 2023, and returned with Halfway There, his first newly-recorded album since his release from prison, in March.

New Orleans rap duo Fresh X Reckless has creators showing off their skills with their upbeat banger, “Blicky.” Boasting 477.2K+ creations, the auto-tuned bop finds creators repurposing choreography by creator @amour.jordynn with a twist – instead of doing the full dance routine, creators stop abruptly and do their best impressions of Fresh X Reckless’ signature pose. Creators show off their moves in the classroom, at the arcade, and at home with the assistance of their siblings. Best known for their playful performances, Fresh X Reckless also kept the trend going on their TikTok, sharing behind-the-scenes footage of the official music video, linking up with Fivio Foreign to jam out to “Blicky,” and reacting to creators’ videos using the duet feature. A bonafide pop hitmaker and TikTok favorite, Meghan Trainor is back again to let her fans know her real name: “Mother.” With over 120.8K creations, the sound is bringing all the moms out and inspiring a dance trend choreographed by @brookieandjessie. The bubbly song soundtracks creations from moms who attempt the dance trend as their little one records or want their baby to be born on the perfect numerical date in March. Meghan is having a blast with the sound, as she gushes about having Kris Jenner in the music video, jokes about her unborn baby kicking her at night, and even thanks the dance trend creators for flying out to Australia to teach her the viral dance.

Taylor Swift recently embarked upon her “Eras Tour,” a nationwide tour that presents an eye-catching presentation of songs that span her career. As the home of #SwiftTok (18.3 billion views) and a place where Taylor’s biggest fans love to talk about their fave, TikTok has worked with Taylor to establish the “Eras Tour” Hub. When fans on TikTok search for topics the “Eras Tour,” they are presented with a special landing page that collects videos from the concerts, allows fans to share their own experiences with the tour, and redirects to Taylor’s official “Eras Tour” merch store through a special banner. A multi-day celebration of music hosted in one of North America’s most beautiful cities, the Festival D’ete de Quebec (FEQ) is a festival unlike any other. Today, FEQ announces the star-studded lineup for FEQ 2023, featuring star performers and exciting rising acts from all over the world, plenty of incredibly talented Canadian artists.. With a dazzling group of headliners that includes Foo Fighters, Lana Del Rey, Lil Durk, Green Day, Weezer, and many others, FEQ returns for its 55th anniversary from July 6-16th in Quebec City, QC, Canada.

Passes for FEQ are available now HERE. FEQ passes are fully transferable–fans can share with friends and family if unable to attend one of the 11 days–and are available for $140 CAD (or about $12.72 CAD per day!).

With over 200 artists performing on five stages over the course of eleven days, FEQ offers a smorgasbord that can entice any kind of music lover. The summer festival makes use of The Plains of Abraham, one of the most notable historical sites in Canada, where, in 1759, the British and French fought a decisive battle in the Seven Years’ War. Now, hundreds of years later with Canada’s fate in its own hands, the Plains of Abraham is the location of the FEQ’s main stage, with a capacity of over 80,000. With its multi-day, multi-venue structure and the full-fledged involvement of the surrounding city, FEQ is the closest North American analog to European city festivals like the UK’s Wireless Festival, Spain’s Primavera Sound, or Denmark’s Roskilde. Located on the banks of the St. Lawrence River, Quebec City is the closest thing to a European city within driving distance, and fans who don’t feel like road tripping can take one of 21 direct flights to the YQB airport.

The Video for the Opening Track from Paper Route Frank Highlights the Inimitable Impact and Lasting Legacy Forged by Young Dolph’s Deep Connection to his City

The Video:

Young Dolph built his empire from the ground up, in the streets of Memphis that he called home. Today, the label he built, Paper Route Empire, shares the new video for “Love For The Streets,” the opening song from his posthumous album Paper Route Frank.

The video for “Love For The Streets” opens with an audio clip of Dolph explaining that he wrapped his fleet of luxury cars in the same, signature camouflage wrap, not for the love of the cars themselves, but to be different: “I’m doing stuff that can’t nobody do, and that’s the hardest thing to do, is stand out.” As the clip fades into the track’s introduction, the camouflaged convoy takes to the streets of Memphis, passing local landmarks like the memorialized Adolph “Young Dolph” Thornton, Jr. Avenue and the Dolph Land memorial mural in Castalia, with old footage of Dolph interspersed as though he never left. At the video’s closing, Dolph is seen toasting his Paper Route Empire family as he lays out his plans to keep the empire growing, saying, “I love all y’all. This sh*t living forever.”

The video for “Love For The Streets” arrives as Paper Route Empire continues to work harder than ever to honor Dolph’s legacy and continue to fulfill his vision. “Honeyberry 2” is the latest fan-favorite Pi’erre Bourne snippet to see release in recent weeks, following the February release of “IG.” “Honeyberry 2” and “IG” are the latest salvos in what’s shaping up to be a busy year for the SossHouse Founder and CEO. In April, Pi’erre Bourne prepares to make his desert debut at Coachella 2023. Last month, Pi’erre shared the new video for “DJ In The Car,” danceable highlight from his 2022 album Good Movie, available now HERE. The South Carolina-born artist is hard at work on the follow-up to Good Movie, dropping later this year. Most recently, Pi’erre connected with his SossHouse signees Sharc and Frazier Trill to release an unofficial remix of Lil Yachty’s “Poland,” with a video filmed in the titular country.

The prolific Pi’erre Bourne had a busy 2022, highlighted by two full-length projects: Good Movie and Space Age Pimpin. Finally free and able to flex his boundless creativity, 03 Greedo is ready to show the world he’s still one of the most talented artists in the game. Starting a new phase of his storied career, Greedy shares “Bacc Like I Never Left,” a new single and a resounding statement from the Watts, CA native. Recorded in Greedy’s halfway house in Texas, “Bacc Like I Never Left” finds the rapper twirling taffy-like melodies over room-enveloping production by Bighead. Switching flows as he creeps through the beat’s copious negative space, the L.A. legend makes clear that he’s been working hard behind the scenes: “Before I even got released I put some water on my neck,” he sings.

The Alamo Records signee debuted the new song during his performance at Billboard’s The Stage @ SXSW. His first full performance onstage since 2018, the 35 minute set was a cathartic and celebratory moment for Greedy, who performed hits from throughout his career, including his RIAA-certified hits “Substance” and “Trap House,” early highlights like “Sweet Lady,” and hard-hitting anthems like “Never Bend.” Appropriately, Greedy put a particular focus on his 2017 mixtape First Night Out, performing 4 songs from that tape including “Rude” and “Zoning.”

The release of “Bacc Like I Never Left” and the SXSW performance continue an incredible year for the West Coast icon. Earlier this year, just before his release from jail, Greedo shared Free 03, an acclaimed mixtape. Created in collaboration with renowned L.A. producer Mike Free, the tape features a combination of vault tracks and songs with vocals recorded over the prison phone. Home to 2022 singles “Drop Down” ft. KenTheMan and “Pourin” ft. BlueBucksClan, named one of the Best Rap Songs of 2022 by Passion of the Weiss, Free 03 is a potent refinement of Greedo’s inimitable sound. The tape earned praise from Pitchfork, who wrote “Free 03 blends this celebratory post-prison rush with the emotional fallout from his sentence: a collection of songs that grooves and seethes, always remaining focused on greener pastures,” and earned positive mentions in Billboard, Vulture, HipHopDX, UPROXX, and more.
