The Album:

Esteemed producer RJD2 and lauded rapper STS, also known as Sugar Tongue Slim, are releasing their self-titled album STS x RJD2 on May 5th via RJ’s record label, RJ’s Electrical Connections.

RJD2, the man behind the theme for Mad Men and Ghostwriter, and many more tracks on TV and film, recruited fellow Philadelphia transplant STS for his ninth album. STS, whose fingerprints are on Ciara’s “Oh,” The Roots‘ How I Got Over LP, and songs from Jill Scott, Jazzy Jeff, and more, lends his soulful, poetic, and heart-wrenchingly honest lyrics to this timeless project. Cultivated via face-to-face recording sessions, the two formed a unit and cut a full-length album of beautiful, soulful, poetic, and fluid music that is both timeless, and like nothing else in rap today. Heavily melodic and still able to rattle a trunk, this debut album takes nods from the Impressions to Ludacris to Wu-Tang, all the while holding originality, razor sharp lyricism and a deep pocket in the highest regard. Philly’s finest are shining.

The single, entitled “Hold On, Here It Go” was premiered by Rolling Stone and is a unique, shapeshifting song that intermittently omits the drums and simultaneously modulates upwards throughout the song. Describes RJ, “Rarely do I cut a track and get the goosebumps, slam dunk type feeling RIGHT away, but it happened on this one. The chorus was fly, with the horns and the drums in the pocket (shout out to Bohemian Dub Orchestra for putting it over the top!), so there was almost no way to take the energy higher. The only way to go for the verses was to take it all the way down-no rhythm section at all. To give it some momentum, the chord changes keep shifting up octaves every 8/16 bars or so. Definitely one of my proudest moments ever making rap music. This was one of the first songs that we cut where I stood back was like, WOW, this cat Jordan can sing his ASS off!”

RJD2 Background:

RJD2, a transplant via Ohio, has a history spanning back to the late 90’s indie hip-hop scene. After notable stops on both the Definitive Jux and XL labels, he ventured forth with his own label in 2009 (RJ’s Electrical Connections, which brings you this fine piece of work today). With a catalog of albums running back to 2002, he likely qualifies as an underground vet at this stage of his career. With the tunes“Ghostwriter” and the “A Beautiful Mine,” aka the Mad Men theme making their rounds on TV, his reach has continually spread beyond the sold out club dates and festival appearances of the last decade+.

STS Background:

STS, aka Sugar Tongue Slim, is an Atlanta transplant who found himself amidst the orbit of Dre andVidal, Jazzy Jeff, Jill Scott, and the cast of players that were in and out of Larry Gold’s “The Studio.”This led to being a writer on Ciara’s “Oh,” working intimately with Def Jam. He was first introduced to the public on The Roots‘ Grammy-Nominated release, How I Got Over, where he was featured on the cuts, “Right On” and “Hustla.” Later that month he released Demand More II featuring the underground hits, “The People” and “In For The Kill.” He soon brought his G.O.L.D act to stage, setting off sold out shows for acts such as Travis Barker, 50 Cent, J-Cole, Big Sean, B.O.B and The Roots among others. That buzz resulted in a spotlight on MTV2’s Sucker Free Sunday as the featured act for XXL’s Show & Prove segment.

Self-trained “Egyptian Grammarian” Reinterprets Classic Egyptian Texts

The Book:

Rapper and The Hieroglyphics co-founder, Jonathan Owens, aka Casual, has published his first book, entitled, Madjai, A Handbook for the Conscious Community. The self-trained scholar translated ancient Egyptian texts and addressed historical misconceptions of the region surrounding the Nile River.

Madjai is a collection of articles and analyses of ancient Egyptian text, offering new interpretations to some of the worlds oldest manuscripts. With over a decade of independent studies under his belt, Casual has published well received articles online as he specializes in the Egyptian language Medu Netcher. “The process involved a lot of research and new translations of ancient Egyptian texts,” he explains. “I consider myself an Egyptian grammarian. I study the ancient Egyptian language and address misinterpretations.” The book follows a recent debate Casual won in New York City between the Black Hebrew Israelites and Kemet on Trial. “I was giving valid, accurate answers to the opposing side who were challenging the info of kemetology. It was wonderful for me, and we won.” Casual also started a Facebook study group, Madjai – Vanguards of Kemet, available as a resource to those interested in the subject.

Speaking on how his research and ideas have influenced him over the years, Casual explained, “Actually, it’s the other way around. My music has influenced these ideas. I’m 40 years old, at this age I’m most inspired by just sitting down and writing,” he says. “At this point of my career, I always want to do more. Researching and writing is helping me stay amongst the people. I’m working on the second book for Hiero, which is in the works to come out later this year. This is gonna help sustain my legacy in hip-hop and help present myself as multi-faceted writer and artist.”

The Song:

Wrapping up his Rapture Tour, Zion I released “Culture Freedom” in collaboration with fellow Bay Area lyricist Locksmith. The track, which premiered via DJBooth, energizes the ears of weary rap fans with clever flows and innovative production by Aagee. “I met him back in the late ’90s on the Wake Up Show,” MC Zumbi says of Locksmith. “I’ve always had respect for his lyricism and it took a couple of years for us to connect.” In February, Mass Appeal debuted Zion I’s The Sun, Moon, and Stars, the third and final chapter of their three EP journey. Embraced as an Oakland mainstay known for advanced lyrical deliveries and a cohesive back-to-the-future musical package, Zion I will perform at Slim’s in San Francisco on April 11 with support from Locksmith and Kev Choice.

The EP:

Following a strong series of single and video releases, Maryland via Lagos rapper Ikey has released his long-awaited Green Card EP. The project premiered via Complex, who said that Ikey “shows off his strong and deliberate flow that he balances with meaningful lyrics that when combined truly makes him a name to watch in hip-hop.” Ikey’s single “Story, Story” premiered last week via HipHopWired, who said the track “is triumphant in tone, with Ikey using situations of struggle and despair as a means to motivate himself and listeners to be greater,” adding, “This here is that feel good, stick to your ribs music.”

Green Card is a collection of music shaped by the myriad of experiences, both locally and abroad, that molded Ikey into the man he is today. In singles like “Timbuktu” and “Olodo,” Ikey weaves tales of multiple jobs and being called an “olodo” (Yoruba slang term for dummy) for pursuing a rap career. The songs are seamlessly interwoven with confident, metaphor-driven rhymes over production inspired by Fela Kuti, DJ Premier and other musicians influential to Ikey. “I grew up in Nigeria during a time of social and political turmoil,” he explains. “I actually lived in Lagos during the last military regime, and my experiences from that time greatly influence the stories I tell. Nigerian music from artists like Fela Kuti, Oliver de Coque, Osadebe, and music from French World Music group Deep Forest that my dad played during that time inspired me musically.”

“My job as an artist is to always show my appreciation, represent our story properly and do whatever it takes to make sure we all achieve that American Dream,” Ikey told Okayafrica in an interview feature about his Nigerian roots and how his experiences have influenced Green Card. “I’m just a young kid straight out of Lagos,” Ikey says. “When I see people like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie being sampled on Beyonce records, it makes me feel people want that true African story. I just feel there are a lot of Nigerian-Americans trying to tell that story, and I’m trying to tell it the right way.”

Ikey Background:

For Ikey, it’s all about the story. Born in New York, with roots in both Spanish Harlem and Lagos, Nigeria, Ike Obioha connected with music at an early age. The diverse palette of his father’s music collection painted a musical canvas that pays homage to everything from Elton John and Journey to the Neville Brothers and Igbo Nigerian highlife singer Chief Stephen Osita Osadebe.

Ikey’s unique, 1.5 generation immigrant experience influenced both the subject matter and creation of his music. Despite pressure to embark upon a more scholarly career, Ikey would ultimately find himself opening for the likes of Big Sean and have his music covered in the Washington City Paper. Chicago’s Montana of 300 and longtime rap partner Talley of 300 team up again, this time for an original track, “Gas Mask,” from their forthcoming Gunz & Roses album. In an intense black and white visual, which premiered via The Smoking Section, the duo mob out in a basement with an onslaught of aggressive, boastful bars. Often referred to as “Rap God,” Montana Of 300 got his start back in 2008 when he and his crew named themselves after the movie 300, adopting the movie’s underlying motif “No surrender, no retreat” as his own anthem.

“Gas Mask” has Montana and To3 spitting fearless bars that speak for themselves – the two aren’t afraid of anything or anyone. Montana previously worked with Talley of 300 in his single “Planet of the Apes,” which was accompanied by an extended video version. “I started rapping with Talley, literally,” explains Montana of 300. “We both decided to write raps in class together during freshman year in high school. The Single and EP:

The Tour:

Wrapping up the first half of North American dates on his Play Like Hell Tour, critically-acclaimed rapper and producer Black Milk will be hitting Europe this spring. Featuring his live band Nat Turner (keyboardist/vocalist Aaron “Ab” Abernathy, bassist Malik Hunter and drummer Z Horton), the first leg of North American dates began in Dallas and will wrap up on the west coast next week before detouring through Europe. Europe dates include stops in Switzerland, France, Germany, Holland, UK, Austria, Poland, and Sweden. The second half of North American dates will resume this June in Washington, DC and hit his hometown of Detroit. The Detroit rapper celebrated the beginning of his tour by releasing the first single since his If There’s A Hell Below album dropped last October with “I Guess,” a lyrical onslaught with multi-layered samples with oscillating percussion. He will also release If There’s A Hell Below Instrumentals on vinyl this Record Store Day, April 18.

Respected as an accomplished musician with more than a decade of industry experience and a rich catalog of recordings, Black Milk has transitioned from one of hip-hop’s young rising stars to a veteran with a uniquely well-rounded pedigree. Black Milk Background:

As one of the most celebrated producers and rappers of his generation of hip-hop artists, Black Milk has conditioned fans and critics to expect the unexpected with each release. Few producers have earned the notoriety and respect he has as a musician, and when that is coupled with commanding talent as an emcee, it’s no surprise that his solo releases are met with exalted anticipation. With more than a decade of industry experience and a rich catalog of recordings, Black Milk has transitioned from one of hip-hop’s young rising stars to a veteran with a uniquely well-rounded pedigree. Following last year’s release of Woop Lingo, West Orlando’s Woop dropped a visual for his loose single, “Drugs,” which features fellow Orlando rapper YG Ivy and production by The Colleagues. The track was debuted with an interview via Noisey, who said that Woop’s music “serves to illuminate his impoverished neighborhood’s ills by slipping in those pains within colorful melodies,” adding, “what’s notable about ‘Drugs’ is its matter-of-factness.” After being featured on The FADER when Woop Lingo released last summer, the mixtape was also highlighted as Stereogum‘s Mixtape of the Week and later in Pitchfork‘s list of the year’s overlooked on mixtapes.

Woop’s music is heavily influenced by his upbringing in West Orlando, a place he described to Noisey as “what the people in Disney World don’t want you to see.” “My neighborhood, well our part of the neighborhood, it’s like its own world,” Woop explains. “It’s 700 block, Malibu & Ivey Lane. We got our own ways.” Woop started gaining momentum as his single, “Pussy Nigga,” traveled to the car stereos and club sound systems. Woop subsequently got connected with Lift Off Management and CSR Promotions while industry co-signs and cameos came rolling in. Woop’s constantly growing list of collaborators include the likes of Migos, Yo Gotti, Kevin Gates, Plies, Bobby Shmurda, Ca$h Out, Young Scooter, PeeWee Longway and more. “Everything is motivation. I been through a lot. All that is motivation. Every day I walk the street is motivation.”
