Dallas trio The Outfit, TX (Mel, Dorian, and JayHawk) are gearing up for their forthcoming Deep Ellum EP with “Watcha Mean,” a product of the group’s “Cooly Fooly Space Age Funk” genre. Full of smooth synth bass lines, synthesizer, and crisp 808 drum tracks, TOTX delivers every rhyme with the Southern bravado the trio has become synonymous with. The track, which premiered via Passion of the Weiss, features a menacing beat from Mel and Dorian, with JayHawk, K. Nation, and Crit Morris delivering rhymes over Mel’s hypnotic chorus.

“What You Mean” embodies all of our shared experiences of folks having us fucked up,” Mel explained to Passion of the Weiss. “In life, it seems, countless people offer you their unrequested two pennies, tell you what you can or cannot do, place themselves in the middle of YOUR business, and all kind of other ridiculous shit. On the song’s hook, we seemingly lend an ear to the aforementioned ridiculous folks, giving them an opportunity to get their words in. As soon as the verses start, we turn up on they funky ass in the middle of a sentence, throw imaginary money in their face, style and profile, and any other off-putting, ‘I ain’t trying to hear that bullcorn’ actions one could fathom. The track’s accompanying white-noised cover design illustrates the brain’s reception to the above advice and opinions. It is also a motif of our current mode, as a whole.”

Awarded Best Rap Group from Dallas Observer in 2014, the trio’s critically acclaimed repertoire has distinguished them as one of Texas’ most eccentric groups, having done interviews with NPR, Complex, and SPIN. Deep Ellum will serve as a follow-up to 2013’s double album Cognac/Four Corner Room,- Cognac showcasing rap and production by Mel and Four Corner Room showcasing rap and production from Dorian.

The Outfit, TX Background:

Born and raised in Dallas, producers and rappers Dorian, JayHawk, and Mel make up the hip-hop band The Outfit, TX. After forming while in school at University of Houston in 2006, they returned to Dallas to continue to work on their patented brand of “Cooly Fooly Space Age Funk.” Individually, each has their own respective sound and together, they expertly blend their unabashed Southern credo of smooth synth bass, moogs, 808s and synthesizers.

TOTX has performed with the likes of J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa, The Clipse, and Kendrick Lamar. They headlined their first sold out show at Warehouse Live in Houston, TX in March 2013, then hit the road, performing at several music festivals including A3C’s “Best in Texas” Showcase, and Spune’s Index Fest in Dallas, TX. The future holds much more for the three Southern gentlemen that comprise The Outfit,TX, who recently relocated back to Dallas from Houston. They might have put it best, describing their artistry as “one small step for Texas, one giant leap for Southern kind.”

The Song:

Montreal rapper Wasiu and producers Thomas White and WYLN have whipped up a remix of Drake‘s “No Tellin’,” flipping a sample from the original song’s intro and warping their individual styles together for an untraditional track. The trio came together in the studio and individually added layers to the remix, each blending their own styles with one another and also with the OG version of the song. “My signature sound I’d say is emotional aerial, with pitched vocals, piano and the likes,” Thomas White explained to Complex in their premiere post. “For WYLN; banging drums, sliding 808s and he added real percs he records himself.”

“I’m repeating the words ‘No Tellin” in my head and I start to form a triple entendre with it,” says Wasiu, who came into the studio mid-session and began developing a concept and writing his contribution for the remix. “There’s no tellin’ as in no snitching, and if there is snitching then there’s no tellin’ what I’ma do. The other meaning to this no tellin’ is how I’m gonna flow on it. I switched my flow a few times, so there’s no tellin, it’s unexpected what my flow is on here. Just like the sample says, ‘had to switch the flow up for you niggas shit was getting too predictable.'”

Haitian-Canadian rapper Wasiu has been building a name for himself with the release of several tracks this year. He previously released “I Got It,” teaming up with RAW Records co-founder/producer Dear Lola, who remixed Jay-Z and Kanye‘s infectious “What U Need” with a funky bassline and dance floor-ready swing. The 24 year-old rapper first debuted back in January with his Kaytranada-produced video single “Physical,” and has since gone on to show his range of politically-charged, socially conscious, and self-confident rhymes. “My music is empowerment, and defeat. It’s the whole spectrum,” he explains. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad… and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

Wasiu Background:

For Wasiu, being a pariah has always been a constant. A child of divorce from a Nigerian Muslim father and Haitian Protestant-Christian mother, he was torn between worlds, seen by both communities as impure, and a “mixed breed”—not entirely Haitian, not quite Nigerian. Even though he’s Québecois (a Québec native), his immigrant parents tainted his claim to the province. Raised by his mother after his father moved to Toronto, he felt obliged to fit in with her side of the family. Resentments towards his father’s beliefs and culture led him to drop his father-given middle name—Wasiu—so that he wouldn’t be teased in his predominantly white school, where he battled black stereotypes by pushing his intellect past expectations.

Overcoming adversity and using those lessons as lyrical fuel is Wasiu’s strongest suit. He is preparing his debut album which funnels his life experiences into a culturally defining opus that balances both optimistic and pessimistic perspectives on human themes. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad,” he says, “and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

Premiered by Exclaim!, the 19-Year-Old Ottawa Rapper Delivers a Mysterious Visual For the Lead Single From His Neverland EP, Releasing Next Week

Entranced by Toronto’s outdoors – Scarborough Bluffs, Markham Forest, Rosedale Ravine – “Broke Dreams” follows 19-year-old Congo-born, Ottawa-based rapper VNCHY in a scenic, mysterious visual directed by KidStudio, whose credits include The Weeknd‘s “King of the Fall.” VNCHY appears to be on the prowl in “Broke Dreams,” the first video in a series that will be released with a several EP’s throughout the year, leading into his debut album. “Although I am the hunter, I have the ability to empathize with the hunted,” VNCHY told Exclaim! in their premiere post. His Neverland EP releases next week: “Heavily fortified for its treasures, Neverland remains a personal domain that resides in all of us and is used to exercise untapped potential. Although the visuals are an extension of the music, they have the ability to stand as their own product as they outline the many details, elements, concepts, and ideas, which symbolize the essence of Neverland.”

On “Broke Dreams,” VNCHY reflects on being the middle child, raised as the son of a preacher while his mother held the family together “like brackets within a function.” In addition to the influence of his family and how he was raised, VNCHY’s infatuation with the entertainer’s lifestyle stems from an unyielding confidence in his skills as an emcee. VNCHY raps: “Overcome my age, it’s more than just a phase momma/ I’m not deranged, I was born for that stage momma.” During the first performance of an acoustic, pen-tapping version of the single at The University of Ottawa, the rapper used pencils and a school desk to recreate the instrumental as he recited each verse. When asked about what “Broke Dreams” meant to him, VNCHY stated that the single, “is that point of no return…it only made sense that this was what I was willing to put my life on the line for… The friends lost, struggle to attain support, social and economical standings, though very negative in their effects, it was all crucial for progression-I had to break everything before rebuilding. I am committed to the pain.”

The Background:

VNCHY has been making music since the ripe ages of 15 but it wasn’t until last year that his progress made exponential leaps. He began his surge by gathering together a team of like-minded individuals and creating a business entitled MVMNT Collective Inc. Through the creation of an entity that is distinct from him yet represents anything and everything he believes in, VNCHY was able to open himself up to many more business ventures and opportunities that would not have before been possible on his own.

He released his first single, “Bane,” on SoundCloud, which was able to garner over 6,000 listens simply through word of mouth and promotion from close friends and family. He followed up his initial release with his track “Godlevel,” which was instantly picked up by Noisey, iLuvLola, Boi1da, AshleyOutrageous, Mechanical Dummy, and more and now has over 7,000 listens on SoundCloud. These releases helped VNCHY create a nice buzz for himself which led to the creation of a loyal fan base allowing him to begin doing performances as many people started showing interest in wanting to hear him perform live. As such, VNCHY has opened for the likes of Big K.R.I.T. alongside Two-9 at Cabaret Underworld in Montreal and has performed alongside Post Malone on his White Iverson Tour.

New York rap artist Dylan Owen recently released his heartfelt There’s More To Life EP, and now he’s following it with a reminiscent visual for “The Glory Years.” The video, directed by Mike Holland, follows a melancholic Dylan as he revisits his childhood room to rifle through old mementos, while an older man reminisces about his younger years, bringing the theme of nostalgia full circle. At just 22 years old, Dylan’s self-awareness and self-actualization belies his age and “The Glory Years,” acutely summarizes the project’s message. “We haven’t had the best years of our lives yet, and that’s okay,” Owen explains. “I’m confident that they’re still to come.”

“The Glory Years” is the intro track from Dylan Owen’s recently released EP, There’s More To Life. Deemed a “well-crafted record” by RESPECT magazine, the EP showcases Owen’s hip-hop-meets-indie-rock sound with boom bap drums, live guitars and violins, antique pianos, and vintage lo-fi keyboards all in the same setting. While preparing his upcoming 48Hunnid EP, Chevy Woods liberates his DeJ Loaf-featured single, “All Said And Done.” In each verse, Woods exhibits stories about loyalty, trust, and authenticity. “The song is my life in 3 minutes — they’re stories I’ve been waiting to tell and now I’ve got a platform to speak from,” Woods tells Billboard. With hook responsibilities, Loaf, known for her R&B and street edgy vocals, gives each chorus grittiness as well as empathetic appeal. “Her voice brought it full circle. It wasn’t necessary about the words she says, it’s more about the feeling in her voice,” Woods explains. With production from Ricky P, the song’s message is taken to new heights with its trunk-rattling instrumental, which hits its authoritative peak in the middle of Loaf’s chorus.

“All Said And Done” is from Chevy Woods’ forthcoming 48Hunnid EP, which serves as the Taylor Gang representative’s first commercial product. Available on August 7th, the EP additionally features Post Malone, OG Maco and Rico Love. The track follows Woods’ video-single, “Now That I’m Up.” Filmed just south of his hometown of Pittsburgh, blue and red coloring detach Woods from the grayscale backgrounds of a construction yard and vintage car garage, which bares a TGOD graffiti tag. In addition to the video, Chevy Woods previously surprised fans with the release of his five-song SXSW I Love Texas EP. Produced entirely by Ricky P, SXSW I Love Texas has the Pittsburgh rapper showing love for all things Texas, Chevy Woods raps about a friend being imprisoned in Fort Worth, his adoration of bad girls from San Antonio, stories of mobbing with his crew through the southern state. Woods also released his DJ Holiday-hosted Gangland 3 mixtape in January, which includes features from Taylor Gang cohorts Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, and Ty Dolla $ign, in addition to production from Zaytoven and Sonny Digital. Chevy Woods has been building up momentum with his mixtapes Red Cup Music, The Cook Out, and the Gangland series, progressing his sound with each release. After years of writing and recording in his home studio, Chevy traded in his keyboard for cash to pay for studio time. In 2004, while recording at Pittsburgh’s I.D. Labs Studios, Chevy encountered Wiz Khalifa and the two instantly formed a bond. “Me and Wiz, we always had each other’s backs. Since we were both recording at I.D. Labs at the same time, we would hold each other down,” Chevy has explained. “Even if it was just picking up Wendy’s for the other one on our way to the studio.”

Debuted by Pitchfork, the Oakland Duo Follows Their 808s & Dark Grapes III Release With Kreayshawn-directed “Dip” Visual

Oakland-bred cloud rap architects the Main Attrakionz recently released their anticipated 808s & Dark Grapes III, an album that they’ve been teasing for several years, via Neil Young‘s Vapor Records. Now, the eccentric duo is sharing their trippy, Kreayshawn-directed visual for “Dip,” which premiered via Pitchfork. Filmed in Oakland, the visual features local turf dancers Spiderman Dancer and Chonkie.

“Dip” is produced by Friendzone, and is a particular twist from the lo-fi, bass heavy sound that the Main Attrakionz had ushered into the hip-hop underworld. “‘Dip’ is their closest thing to a club song, channeling a haunted-castle version of ‘Tipsy’ for 2015,” Pitchfork raved. They’re spot on, as the duo of MondreM.A.N. and Squadda B are found outside an abandoned house, neon lights protruding through the windows. “I wanted to capture the darkness of the vibe the song gives off, keeping the video classic with a twist of effects to up the eerie feeling,” Kreayshawn explained.

Main Attrakionz’ 808s & Dark Grapes III released late last month via Stereogum, and has been recognized for its innovative sound. “808s III doesn’t sound particularly ‘cloudy’ at all,” explained Pitchfork in their review of the project. “The album is bombastic and baroque, certainly not lo-fi; if anything, it evokes sunlight streaming through parting clouds, a sudden moment of clarity.” “If you listen to 808s III you’re definitely listening to Main Attrakionz, but if you compare these songs to our other songs, you’ll see the difference,” Squadda B told HotNewHipHop in an interview, while MondreM.A.N. added that “we kinda took it a little more serious as a group when we were recording it, trying new styles, trying new song structures, new shit. This is just the result of that, we’re just gonna keep on running with this new shit.”

The Song:

Announcing his MTLiens EP, Haitian-Canadian rapper Wasiu releases “No Chance,” a vengeful single about an unfaithful companion. Produced by frequent collaborator Dear Lola, the track showcases the duo’s chemistry while serving as a strong introduction to Wasiu’s forthcoming EP. The song samples Justin Timberlake‘s “Cry Me A River,” turning the 2002 record into a disjointed instrumental for Wasiu to express his anguish. “It’s the same theme of the original song,” Wasiu told HotNewHipHop in their premiere post. “I find out my girl has been cheating on me, but I take it a bit further. I take matters into my own hands.” With lines like, “Ain’t no way in hell, even less up in heaven,” and chorus, “No chance that I am taking you back,” Wasiu takes Timberlake’s original message to the next level of the grieving process: exasperation.

“No Chance” follows several previous collaborations between Wasiu and  RAW Records co-founder/producer Dear Lola, who remixed Kanye West and Jay-Z‘s “What U Need” to deliver Wasiu’s HYPETRAK-premiered “I Got It,” an upbeat track with a funky bass line and dance floor-ready swing. At 24 years old, the rapper was first introduced in January with his Kaytranada-produced video single, “Physical,” and he has since gone on to show his range of politically-charge, socially conscious and self-confident rhymes. “My music is empowerment, and defeat. It’s the whole spectrum,” he explains. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad… and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

Wasiu Background:

For Wasiu, being a pariah has always been a constant. A child of divorce from a Nigerian Muslim father and Haitian Protestant-Christian mother, he was torn between worlds, seen by both communities as impure, and a “mixed breed”—not entirely Haitian, not quite Nigerian. Even though he’s Québecois (a Québec native), his immigrant parents tainted his claim to the province. Raised by his mother after his father moved to Toronto, he felt obliged to fit in with her side of the family. Resentments towards his father’s beliefs and culture led him to drop his father-given middle name—Wasiu—so that he wouldn’t be teased in his predominantly white school, where he battled black stereotypes by pushing his intellect past expectations.

Overcoming adversity and using those lessons as lyrical fuel is Wasiu’s strongest suit. He is preparing his debut album which funnels his life experiences into a culturally defining opus that balances both optimistic and pessimistic perspectives on human themes. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad,” he says, “and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

Trae Tha Truth‘s single, “Tricken Every Car I Get,” which was premiered by The FADER, finds the “big homie” of Houston teaming up with Future, Boosie, and production team League of Starz, for a grandiose drop-top anthem that remains true to the Lone Star state’s infatuation with customized rides. Widely recognized as one of the most genuine individuals in hip-hop, Trae has established some of the strongest relationships in the industry. On “Tricken Every Car I Get,” Trae uses his notoriously gritty vocals to deliver spirited verses illustrating his confident demeanor. The chorus, which is covered by Future, adds stamina to the single through its re-energizing atmosphere. Using the momentum from Trae and Future, Boosie solidifies his presence with an aggressive verse about his life as a D-Boy before music. “Me and Future were in the studio one night and we had did a couple of records and Future had came up with the hook,” Trae told The FADER, who continued on Boosie’s added involvement. “Boosie had just came home. I believe it was his first night in the studio, and I was up there visiting and we ended up knocking it out. We’ve been knowing each other, because we all were young coming up and doing our thing, so we always had the relationship.” Trae and Boosie have collaborated a time or two before, but Trae says that “this is gonna be the first really big one where we’re both known throughout the world.”

Trae will be releasing his album, Tha Truth, on July 24th, two days after Trae Day, which The FADER TV once documented as an appointed holiday in his city of Houston where Trae throws an event that gives school supplies, immunization shots, and HIV tests to disadvantaged youth. “Tricken Every Car I Get” serves as the second single from the album, following  the video release to Trae’s Rick Ross-assisted banger, “I Don’t Give A Fuck.” The dark video, which features the song’s special guest, Rick Ross, shows the two rap heavyweights rapping their respective verses in various murky environments, embodying to the song’s gloomy, cutthroat atmosphere.

The infectious track has the two singers laying down seductive lyrics over a remixed sample of “The Cha Cha Slide.” “When I heard the track, I asked Jeremih to come by the studio that I was working at in LA at the time and he pulled up on me and laid his verse on it,” Verse Simmonds explained to Billboard. “That’s usually how our session go, very random. One of us just calls the other and if we’re ever in the same area we just pull up and get it in!” “All I Want” is the second single from Verse Simmonds’ Sextape Chronicles 3 album, which will release later this year.

The Atlanta-based artist’s work with Jeremih dates back a few years. “The first song we worked on was ‘Can’t Go No Mo,'” says Verse Simmonds. He and Jeremih co-wrote the track, which released late last year on Jeremih’s N.O.M.A. mixtape. “Since then we have worked together many times and it’s kind of effortless when we are both working together. He’s someone I really respect in this game because he’s super humble and very talented.” Verse Simmonds previously released the first single from Sextape Chronicles 3, “Situationships,” calling out the lack of genuine relationships in today’s world. “‘Situationships’ is an honest perspective on a lot of relationships today,” he told Complex in their premiere post. “I think being in a ‘Situationship’ instead of being in a full blown relationship for some might allow both parties to be more open about their intentions. It’s the realist shit I’ve ever wrote.”

An acclaimed songwriter, Verse Simmonds is a go-to writer for Chris Brown, most notably contributing to his songs “New Flame” and “Drunk Texting,” in addition to songs Brown is featured on including Kid Ink‘s “Hotel” and T.I.‘s “Private Show.” Simmonds is also credited as a writer on K. The Song:

Announcing the August 4th release date for his Drifters EP, Chicago rapper ProbCause today shared the project’s first single, “I Feel U.” Debuted by Consequence of Sound, horns played by Will Millerscream atop glimmering keyboard taps, deep bass booms, and thumping percussion that lay the groundwork for the track that was co-produced by ProbCause and DRO. As for the rhymes, ProbCause is in his comfort zone with loose-lipped, carefree raps stating “if I concerned myself with all the nonsense and gossip I’d already be sleeping inside of a fuckin’ tomb” before making his way back into the song’s uncannily empathetic, boastfully dismissive chorus. “It’s about as Chi-Town as it comes, with every beat ringing like a testament to ProbCause and the scene’s history,” Consequence of Sound explained in their premiere post.

ProbCause’s Drifters EP is the followup to last years WAVES, which featured Chance the Rapper,Donnie Trumpet, and Twista, and the collaborative ZRO FOX EP with fellow Chicago rapper Psalm Onethat released earlier this year. The project displayed a range of hip-hop, trap, and wavy electro-spirited cuts, showing a musical chemistry that reached new creative heights. “The EP offers plenty of thought-provoking rhymes and intense production for fans of alt-leaning hip-hop,” said Consequence of Sound in their premiere post. The Bay Area Rapper Teams Up With Grammy-Winning Producer Bosko for Drug-Worshipping EP

The EP:

California rapper Blanco has released his Molly & Amber EP via his own indie label, Guerilla Entertainment. Molly & Amber was produced in-full by Grammy-winning producer Bosko, who previously produced songs for E-40, Kanye West, J. Cole, and Big Boi. The project includes features from frequent collaborators Husalah, Messy Marv, and late Bay Area legend The Jacka. “The album title is a double entendre,” Blanco explains, “I personally have experienced the effects of drugs and the effects of having more than one woman in my life. Each track was supposed to be a reflection of a drug and a type of girl. For example, “Britney” is cocaine and the track is also named that because of Britney Spears’ crazy moments.”

Blanco recently released the title track, “Molly & Amber,” via YouHeardThatNew, rapping and harmonizing about his hustling mentality atop a piano-guided production. The Berkeley, California native heated up the summer last year with “Block Party,” a joint effort with YG and producer duoCookin’ Soul, which received praised from Complex, HotNewHipHop, and Stereogum, and more. Blanco’s extensive catalogue includes a series of music videos as well as projects with The Jacka,Nipsey Hussle, Araab Muzik, and Yukmouth and several solo projects following his 2011 debut,American Psycho. In an interview with HipHopDX documenting the rapper’s entrepreneurial drive, as well as his trials and tribulations stemming from a $50 million medical marijuana business, the Bay area native proclaimed, “I care more about the [music] I put out than I care about the sales. I care more about what I’m attempting to do. It’s about the whole journey.”

Blanco Background:

Blanco (formerly Benny Blanco) is a rapper born in Berkeley, California but bred throughout the Bay Area. Fascinated by gangsta rap at an early age, Blanco began rhyming at 17. In 2004, he and his brother founded hip-hop label Guerilla Entertainment, which to date has released upwards of over 20 mixtapes and albums. The Album:

“808s III doesn’t sound particularly ‘cloudy’ at all,” explained Pitchfork in their review of the Main Attrakionz‘s 808s & Dark Grapes III. “The album is bombastic and baroque, certainly not lo-fi; if anything, it evokes sunlight streaming through parting clouds, a sudden moment of clarity.” The duo of MondreM.A.N. and Squadda B built a cult following from 2009-2013 as architects of the cloud rap sub-genre, which was rooted in bass-heavy, lo-fi production. After a short hiatus stemming from creative differences, the Main Attrakionz have returned with 808s & Dark Grapes III, which Pitchfork called “an album about perseverance, patience, getting your mind right. Mostly, it seems, it’s about redemption.”

Debuted by Stereogum, the Main Attrakionz’s 808s & Dark Grapes III is produced in-full by Friendzone and is released via Neil Young‘s Vapor Records. “The cloud rap pioneers tackle all of life’s gambles,” said FACT Mag earlier this month in their premiere of “Shoot the Dice.” Previously, The FADER announced the project in May when they debuted the Kreayshawn-directed “Ain’t No Other Way” video. “If you listen to 808s III you’re definitely listening to Main Attrakionz, but if you compare these songs to our other songs, you’ll see the difference,” Squadda B told HotNewHipHop in an interview, while MondreM.A.N. added that “we kinda took it a little more serious as a group when we were recording it, trying new styles, trying new song structures, new shit. This is just the result of that, we’re just gonna keep on running with this new shit.”

Wheeland Brothers Background:

The Wheeland Brothers are two Southern Californian brothers who grew up in Orange County surfing, scarfing down hole-in-the wall Mexican food, and jamming around bonfires. The track presents the crew’s laid-back rhymes on top of wavy production from fellow Bay Area artist 1-O.A.K. “Love Runs Deep” premiered via Mass Appeal, who said “The 1-O.A.K.-produced loose single finds the crew talking about different variations of relationships, all while channeling the sounds of predecessors like The Pharcyde and Souls of Mischief.”

It’s something we as humans are affected by in the strongest and most unexplainable ways.” The trio, which consists of DJ/rapper Azure, Clyde Shankle, and Dayvid Michael, released Wildfire in February via Complex, who called it “a banger of a project… [that will] make you want to head over to the West Coast immediately.” With “Love Runs Deep,” Down 2 Earth is already preparing for their next EP.

Crew member Azure, who recently got off a 35-city tour handling DJ duties for Iamsu!, is also slated to release a solo project, Leap Year, in the coming months. His first video single, “Nine Nine,” premiered via Okayplayer, who said “Azure’s rhyme work here is strong, but with a definitively laid-back air…expect the track to feature prominently in your favorite DJ’s next big set.” While Down 2 Earth are planning to re-release the Wildfire mixtape on CD and vinyl later this year, the project is available for free download at d2e3d.com.

California’s Jay Lozoya is paving a path to the spotlight in the R&B-Pop scene. Joined by Iamsu! and rapper Zoey Dollaz, the Bay Area artist heads to Miami for a steamy new visual for “Dangerous.” The video premiered via Earmilk, who said “everyone involved in the piece are absolutely killing it, and we’re falling in love with the track for real.” Surrounded by beautiful women, Lozoya delivers his lyrics effortlessly displaying the swagger of a man with the world at his finger tips. “Dangerous” was recorded at Wash Studios, produced by Maxwell Smart of the Elevaterz, and mixed by the legendary Miami sound engineer Lu Diaz (50 Cent, Beenie Man, and Trick Daddy).

No stranger to the music industry, Lozoya grew up in the studio observing his father as he managed several Norteno bands in the Bay Area. As a result the artist’s childhood has become an integral part of his mystique, He states, “It’s actually what influences a lot of my music nowadays – not necessarily the sound, but the swagger. That’s what I was raised upon, so thats what I know.” Lozoya’s Round One EP, which released last year, signifies where the artist has come from and where he aspires to go. “Dangerous” is the fourth music video from Lozoya, following the releases “Round One,” “Crazy,” and “Aww Yea.”

Jay Lozoya Background:

Jay Lozoya is not typical at all. A Mexican American, Jay (short for “Junior”) watched his father work in the music industry, managing several Norteno bands in the ‘90s and 2000s. Looking at the Bay, from its streets to its bedrooms, Jay is adding to the realism. “It’s actually what influences a lot of my music nowadays—not necessary the sound, but the swagger. That’s what I was raised upon, so that’s what I know.” The singer cut his teeth assisting mariachi bands, as well as growing up around his father in the recording studio. However, his love was always the Hip-Hop music his older brothers listened to, and later made—with a teenage Jay on the hooks. Lozoya is his mother’s maiden name, something he uses as a tribute of sorts. “I do every thing I do for my mom, so I wanted to represent her that way,” the family-oriented singer explains. His name honors both parents, a product of his heritage. Combining the grit of the Norteno with the booming sound of artists like Jeremih and DJ Mustard gives Jay a lane. “I live by the motto: never forget where you came from. I like to incorporate my Mexican and my Bay Area roots,” he says. “I like to keep that Bay swag, but also, make my music tailor to mainstream.”

The Song:

Brooklyn-based indie/fuzz rockers Lightouts dropped their first release in more than a year with their “More Than Ever” maxi-single, led by pulsating guitar riffs that sit behind Skip McSkipper’s drawn out vocals. The maxi-single debuted on Indie Rock Cafe, who said “‘More Than Ever’ blazes along nicely with menacing guitar riffs, a chugging bass line, monotonic vocals and whip-lashing drum beats. Some will notice the likeness of Bowie, and bands like Television, New Order and Sonic Youth, in the band’s mix of post punk meets goth, which frontman and guitarist, Gavin Rhodes, has sculpted from the get-go, and remained true to over the years.”

“The lyrics of the song were kind of about the mythology of that 1970s, slightly art damaged New York that was starting to crawl towards punk rock, and just how scenes develop around us and you sometimes wonder how that happens without your awareness of it until it really hits the pavement,” Skip explains. Lightouts previously released a cover song of post-punk’s most definitive band, Joy Division, as part of the maxi-single. Lighouts’ cover of Joy Division’s “Interzone” is based on the RCA demo version of the song that showed up on a box-set that the band put out a few years back, which Gavin Rhodes comments on, saying the rare RCA demo is “more raw than the studio version, it sounds like there’s a feral beast howling on the moors of some desolate land.”

“Lighouts are everything I like about bands,” said KEXP‘s John Richards during an interview/studio performance session with the Brooklyn-based rockers. Lightouts’ former vocalist Greg Nelson is no longer with the band, as he was replaced by Skip Greer early last year. In addition to working with the Lighouts, Skip was the founder East Bay pop punk band the Wynona Ryders and is also currently the singer for agit-punk legends the Dead Kennedys.

Gavin Rhodes isn’t one to flit from one musical style to the next; Bowie the Chameleon he is not. And as enthusiastic as he is about new sounds and collaboration, the Lightouts founder/songwriter/guitarist has a clear idea of how he wants his band to sound from one release to the next — even with a new singer onboard. And even if that new singer, Skip McSkipster, also sings for the Dead Kennedys.

Lightouts’ first release with Skip points strongly toward the band’s future. The A-side, “More Than Ever,” smolders along at a midtempo pace as it pays lyrical tribute to a few of the seedier elements of New York, the band’s hometown; the B-side “All We Had,” meanwhile, nails a newly wistful mood, going so far as to work a nocturnal chorus of crickets into the mix. Rhodes’ aim to continue Lightouts’ stylistic thread is realized via striking cover artwork by photographer Jason Knight (whose work also accompanied the Disappear / My My single), as well as through the inclusion of yet another masterfully curated cover, the driving Joy Division nugget “Interzone.”

Rhodes and Skip are understandably excited about making more music together, with plans already well afoot for a second Lightouts LP. Skip puts a fine point on how the pair works best: “I tend to offer more abstract ideas, but Gavin stays very focused and concentrates on exactly what a song needs. I think ‘More Than Ever’ is a good example of the sort of modern-rock progressiveness I hear us creating.”

Virgin Islands-born, Atlanta-based singer/songwriter/producer Verse Simmonds is calling out the lack of genuine relationships in today’s world with “Situationships,” the first single from his forthcoming The Sextape Chronicles 3 album. Speaking to his “number one about making their own rules, Verse explores stigmas and guidelines that are oft placed on what a relationship is supposed to be, while alternative lifestyles can affect the type of relationships that a person desires and experiences. Co-produced by Grammy-winning producer Needlz and Donut, an ethereal ambiance sits behind pulsating percussion and a reverberating vocal.

Premiered by FACT Magazine, Oakland’s Main Attrakionz have released their video for “Shoot the Dice.” In the visuals, M.A.’s MondreM.A.N. and Squadda B are joined by long-time collaboratorShady Blaze. Suited-n-booted, “Shoot the Dice” finds the rappers reflecting on the gambles and risks that are worth taking as they play cards, perform for fans, and put their dedicated yet carefree lifestyle on the front page while throwing money in the air. Produced entirely by Friendzone, the cloud rap originators’808s & Dark Grapes III album will be released on via Neil Young‘s Vapor Records.

After their return from a several year hiatus with an official release date for their long-awaited 808s & Dark Grapes III album, the Main Attrakionz have steadily added to their list of releases.
