For his forthcoming Picture Me Rollin’ mixtape, Chicago drill rapper Mikey Dollaz was gifted some grizzly, haunting production from Atlanta hitmaker Sonny Digital, including the tape’s lead single, “Good As It Gets.” Debuted by HipHopDX, the chaotic video finds Mikey Dollaz and fellow Windy City rapper I.L Will mobbing out in Chicago, bouncing from an open field to the boardwalk, trading verses packed with demanding, merciless rhymes before taking the party out to sea. “Good As It Gets” is the latest in a long line of video singles from frequent collaborators Mikey Dollaz and I.L Will, who previously teamed up for their 2014 mixtape Ovatyme. The “Good As It Gets” video follows “Hot Boy,” produced by Obey City, which Mikey Dollaz debuted at the top of the month via Pigeons & Planes, sharing praises that “Mikey’s voice remains front and center as the commanding force, even through that crazy change-up halfway through.”

Mikey Dollaz’s Picture Me Rollin’ mixtape releases this Friday, Feb. 19th. Boasting versatile production credits, Picture Me Rollin’ presents the Chicago rapper as a rap chameleon, adapting to a variety of styles, delivering everything from a trap ballads (“Girl I Want You,” “Fuck Me Right,” “New to Me”) to trunk-rattling electronic-tinged bangers (“4 Pills,” “Commas”) and drug-addled party anthems (“Flat or Molly,” “NOW”). In addition to the aforementioned collaboration with LuckyMe’s Obey City and several contributions from Sonny Digital, production is provided by Anti-G, Dun Deal, Honorable C.N.O.T.E, Silk Road Assassins, and Strict Face. On vocals, Picture Me Rollin’ finds Mikey Dollaz rapping alongside Lil Chris, Lucci Vee, Mush Millions, and King Louie, with whom he recent linked with for the Salva-produced loose cut “Forever Be Dat Guy,” which sampled Art of Noise‘s popular single “Moments in Love.”

The recent singles and freestyles are follow-ups to Chevy Woods’ The 48 Hunnid Project, which released in August, boasting collabs with DeJ Loaf, Post Malone, OG Maco, Rico Love, and Wiz Khalifa. The 48 Hunnid Project was a monumental release for Woods – it was the first retail release for the Pittsburgh rapper who’s carved his niche as a mixtape king. Back-to-back visuals for “Wit Me“ with Rico Love and the Post Malone and PJ-assisted “Getcha Some” followed previous video releases from the project for “Now That I’m Up,” the i-D-premiered “All Said and Done” featuring Dej Loaf, and “48 Hunnid,” which debuted via Yahoo! Chevy Woods Background:

Chevy Woods has been building up momentum with his mixtapes Red Cup Music, The Cook Out, and the Gangland series, progressing his sound with each release. After years of writing and recording in his home studio, Chevy traded in his keyboard for cash to pay for studio time. In 2004, while recording at Pittsburgh’s I.D. Labs Studios, Chevy encountered Wiz Khalifa and the two instantly formed a bond. “Me and Wiz, we always had each other’s backs. Since we were both recording at I.D. With Yung Ralph‘s I Am Juugman project, Atlanta’s underground king gained mainstream attention for the Fetty Wap-assisted “Act A Fool” and Young Thug collab “Bands.” The project’s latest video single, “Tomorrow,” debuts via HotNewHipHop and is an anthem for living in the moment. “I trap like it ain’t no tomorrow, I rap like it ain’t no tomorrow,” Yung Ralph rhymes on the song’s melodic chorus, before switching up to a gravelly-voiced flow on the boastful verses: “Making these juugs, camping out dirty bird, I’m so Atlanta like Julio [Jones]/ think like it ain’t no tomorrow, twistin’ my fro let it grow out like Coolio.”

Houston veteran and Southern Rap Legend Trae Tha Truth returns today with his 8th solo studio album Tha Truth 2, premiered by The FADER. The album release and FADER premiere comes hot on the heels of new T.I., B.o.B and Ink-featuring single “Let Me Live,” debuted on Ebro Darden‘s show on Apple‘s Beats 1 last night, and the reveal of Trae’s “Crazy” music video, which dropped earlier this week on FuseTV. Trae Tha Truth’s Tha Truth 2 album and “Let Me Live” single also follow “Takers” with Quentin Miller, “All Good” with T.I., Rick Ross, and Audio Push, and “Slugs” featuring Young Thug. “I’m somewhat excited but somewhat nervous at the same time,” Trae tells The FADER. “I feel like Tha Truth 2 is definitely a step up from part one. It’s a continuation, but any time you do a sequel you gotta make it interesting. This is probably one of my dopest projects to date. I opened up a lot more as far as where I’m at and my mind state – I let people in. People run from reality so much, and the fact that I’m giving it to them head first I feel like they’re going to appreciate it.”

The second part of a two album series, Tha Truth 2, follows 2015’s Tha Truth, which included “Trickin’ Every Car I Get” featuring Future and Boosie, as well as “Never Knew,” for which Trae released a visual earlier this year amid his national Truth Tour, which continues through February. As he confesses to The FADER: “I listen to it but at the same time I don’t listen to it because I wanna experience it like everyone else when it comes out. Everybody’s excited and everybody loves it. One thing that I understand is that it’s a work in progress because there’s a lot of people that aren’t familiar with my music yet, but once they hear it it’s most definitely gonna be appreciated.”

With “Fall From Grace,” Sylvan LaCue reflects on a self-realization that’s occurred over the past year. Debuted by Complex with an announcement of his Far From Familiar album, “Fall From Grace” is a look back at the 25-year-old artist’s decision to take a step back in order to take a step forward. “‘Fall From Grace’ is a hail mary from the Miami rapper as he attempts to find purpose and positivity in a world that has tested him left and right,” says Complex, “there’s also a powerful chorus that brings the experience full circle.” Formerly performing and releasing music as QuESt, he abandoned his deal with Logic‘sVisionary Music Group in December 2014 while deciding to escape the spiraling madness of Los Angeles in favor of re-connecting with his hometown Miami roots.

“The craziest thing about evolution is that you never see it coming,” explained Sylvan LaCue in a recent journal to his fans. Pakistan-born, Toronto-based artist Lais got a big look last summer when Drake played his single “For You” during OVO Sound Radio, Episode 2, just before getting into debuts of “Charged Up” and “Hotline Bling.” Carrying that momentum into 2016, Lais is gearing up for the release of his 114 EP. On his new single “Just Us,” which debuts via The FADER, the silky-voiced singer takes the city’s distinctive deep R&B sound and tops it off with his own dark, luxurious vibes.

“I wrote this song during times where my girl and I were going through it and I got sick of all the back and forth,” Lais tells The FADER. “It’s kind of just saying like regardless of all our issues and all the other bullshit involved in our relationship, we always end up with each other anyways, so put the drama aside and come through cause I miss you.” Produced by CVRE, “Just Us” follows 114 singles “Cocaine Rain” and “Moon & Stars 2,” featuring Skizzy Mars, which have accumulated more than 740K plays on SoundCloud

Set to release Feb. 19th, Lais’s 114 EP is the artist’s most mature project yet, channeling his life experiences into his intensely personal music. “I went through a lot the past year,” Lais recalls. “2015 was fucked up and gorgeous at the same time.” The EP chronicles the collapse of a relationship, and “Just Us” represents the “beginning of the end.” Lais’ EP contains elements of Hip-Hop and R&B, but Lais prefers not to be restricted by genre labels. “I mean musically I can’t even give it a genre, it’s a little bit of everything,” Lais explains. “I tried to bring together all the sounds I’ve been messing with over the past year and I feel like it came out beautiful.”

Lais will be celebrating his 114 EP release on Feb. 19th in Toronto at Concorde CityPlace SkyLounge – the event is invite only, more details to come.

Chicago rapper Mikey Dollaz is an early favorite for the Highest Energy Raps of 2016. Hailing from the city’s West Side, the first single from his Picture Me Rollin’ mixtape finds Mikey Dollaz teaming up with decorated Atlanta producer Sonny Digital. A demanding track, “Good As It Gets” has Mikey Dollaz and I.L Will trading verses packed with sanctimonious bars that assault the haunting production. “Mikey Dollaz continues to impress,” notes HotNewHipHop in their premiere of the track. Frequent collaborators, Mikey Dollaz and I.L Will previously teamed up for their mixtape Ovatyme, in addition to working together on several video singles.

Mikey Dollaz’s Picture Me Rollin’ mixtape is slated to release February 19th. The project has a range of impressive production, from working with electronic trendsetters Obey City, Zora Jones, and Planet Mu‘s Silk Road Assassins, to major keys from the street rap realm with additional contributions from Sonny Digital, Dun Deal, and Honorable C.N.O.T.E. Mikey Dollaz brings an energy comparable to Danny Brown with a voice nearer to Young Dro and an obvious reflection of his home city’s drill movement. “Good As It Gets” follows last week’s loose single release from Mikey Dollaz, “Forever Be Dat Guy,” which found SALVA flipping Art of Noise‘s “Moments in Love” into a boastful drill anthem assisted by the sub-genre’s architect King Louie. “Mikey [Dollaz] has star quality,” SALVA says. “He’s a beast in the studio… his voice is crazy too, I get flashes of 2pac in there every now and again.”

Mikey Dollaz was born and raised on the West Side of Chicago, where street drama derailed a promising basketball career. After a prison stint, he invested himself in the city’s burgeoning hip-hop scene, working with influential Chicago director DGainz on “All We Know is Drill,” which earned him a co-sign from King Louie, who he’s since collaborated with several times. It’s through DGainz that Mikey Dollaz also linked up with Tink and Dreezy, the latter of which he teamed up with for 2013’s Business and Pleasure project.

Mikey Dollaz Background:

Mikey Dollaz hit the ground running, parlaying his work ethic and obvious potential into local buzz. After a session with the up and coming Lil Chris went particularly well, the two joined up with I.L. Will to form the group M.I.C. In late 2012, he shot a video for his single “All We Know Is Drill” with influential Chicago director DGainz. As Gainz’s videos were crucial in the rise of the likes of Chief Keef and King Louie in the city’s YouTube-centric scene, the clip took Dollaz to another level. King Louie would eventually co-sign him as well, contributing verses to a handful of future tracks.

Through DGainz, Mikey also eventually found himself in a rap-centric love triangle with Tink and Dreezy. The details are neither here nor there, but he shines on multiple tracks with both women, and an entire tape with Dreezy: 2013’s excellent Business and Pleasure.

In 2016, Mikey Dollaz finds himself established and ready to make a statement as an artist. Done workshopping his flows and test-driving various styles, he’s ready to break out of the midwest and reach for national acclaim with a proper album. Only a couple of years into his career, it’s clear Mikey is yet to reach the limit of his potential.

“Making music with my dad is always an almost unbelievable process,” Saba explained to The FADER in their online streaming premiere. “I remember what it was like watching him in the studio, watching him produce and perform and stuff like that when I was younger and wanting to do that when I got older. It’s a very interesting relationship, I remember when I turned 18, I was in New Jersey with my brother Joseph Chilliams, and our Dad bought us studio time and just basically left us there for a week and wanted an entire project done by the end. Following a live performance debut at halftime of the Sacramento Kings vs. L.A. Lakers game in Sacramento, Bay Area rapper/producer Iamsu!‘s self-produced “Game Time” is the latest single from his forthcoming Kilt 3 project. Along with Iamsu!’s performance, they celebrated the third annual Bollywood Night at the arena, a tradition the Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadivé brought with him after he became the owner of the team in 2013. The game and Iamsu!’s performance were televised in India. Iamsu! is friends with and has collaborated Vivek Ranadivé’s daughter, singer Anjali Wood. The HBK Gang representer shared some cool photos meeting Vlade Divac and Reggie Miller on IG.

“Game Time” is the second single from Iamsu!’s forthcoming Kilt 3 project. While no release date has been set for the project yet, Iamsu!’s been teasing Kilt 3 for some time, having shared the cover art and tracklist on Instagram at the end of 2015. In addition to today’s release of “Game Time,” Iamsu! shared loose single “DOGS,” produced by Trauma Tone. Later this month, Iamsu! will be performing in NYC at SOB’s on Weds., Jan. 27th.

World renowned acts Alesso, Diplo, and The Chainsmokers will headline the new EDM-themed music festival this year in Oakland. Named SuperCity 50, after the 50th incarnation of the Super Bowl this year, the festival will take place on Saturday, February 6th at Oakland’s O.co Coliseum, bringing the first urban EDM festival to the Bay Area.

Houston motormouth Maxo Kream is a force to be reckoned with. Maxo Kream Background:

Upon meeting him, gangsta rapper isn’t the impression that most would get from buzzing Houston emcee, Maxo Kream, age 23. He has a surprisingly goofy and playful demeanor, often cracking self-aware jokes and displaying a smile with showcases either his gold grin or his trademark gap in the upper row of this teeth. But, make no mistake, Maxo’s backstory is a tale consisting of crime and death that would catch the attention of the most jaded followers of gangsta/trap rap.

Inspired by his college trip to SXSW and the fact that other street cliques throughout Houston such as FDAB (founded by late rapper T.O.Y, a childhood friend and Crip associate of Maxo) and MashMode (which has now resulted in the buzzing careers of Houston rap duo, The Sauce Twinz) were transitioning into music as a form of expression, Maxo and his younger cousin Lyndon (rap moniker Lyndo C), jumped into music. Chicago’s ProbCause is talented with more than just his words- the multi-faceted emcee is also a Graffiti artist-turned-graphic designer and animator. Today he’s sharing “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,” an animation based on the infamous Martin Shkreli‘s $2 million-dollar purchase of the coveted Wu-Tang album. “The characters were all people who were actually involved in this very bizarre story,” explains ProbCause, who collaborated with Elijah Alvarado on the video. “It seemed like every day we were working on this there was a new twist on the plot. We also threw Donald Trump in the mix just ’cause that phone call to Method Man was too funny not to animate!”

ProbCause previously shared another animated video for his “Same Thing” single, produced by Drew Mantia from the A3C Volume 5 album. “I grew up drawing and was always attracted to graffiti,” ProbCause explained to Mass Appeal for the premiere post. “I started painting pretty young but got arrested a few too many times. It basically got to a point where I was putting my college scholarship on the line if I got arrested again, so I decided to chill out a little bit in my 20’s.”

ProbCause landed on the broader audiences radar in 2013 with his Chance the Rapper-assisted “LSD” video single, which was later remixed by The Hood Internet. The original song was the pair of Chicago rappers’ second time working together, with Action Bronson having joined them on “Three Course Meal.” This year ProbCause released his album Drifters, debuted by Red Bull Music, which revealed the highly collaborative and vibrant musical community within the city of Chicago. “I work with a lot of really talented musicians in Chicago so it was a very organic thing to involve them in the production process,” ProbCause explained. “[This album] is much more musical than anything I’ve made in the past.” Drifters followed an 18-city tour with Lil Dicky that spanned the East Coast and South in June, and came prior to ProbCause’s own headlining Drifters Tour. Tommy Brown explains. “I said, ‘let’s do a Christmas project,’ and she was like, ‘okay!'” What transpired resulted in a surprise Christmas & Chill EP release from Ariana Grande. The team of creatives built a studio – complete with microphones, speakers, keyboards, computers – in the pop superstar’s house, where they stayed and crafted the 6-song project over the span of 4 days. “We gave her Christmas songs over trap beats,” Tommy Brown explains, adding that they brought in violin players and a ukulele player.

Tommy Brown wants to rewrite the music industry rulebook. The super producer, who has supplied marquee artists like Ariana Grande, T.I. and Chris Brown with boundary-shifting tracks, spent the past few years surveying the scene and witnessed how difficult it can be for up-and-comers to connect with more notable writers and producers. The News:

“Ariana came to the house and was like ‘I want to do a Christmas song, maybe three Christmas songs,'” frequent collaborator and producer Tommy Brown explains. “I said, ‘let’s do a Christmas project,’ and she was like, ‘okay!'” What transpired resulted in a surprise Christmas & Chill EP release from Ariana Grande. The team of creatives built a studio – complete with microphones, speakers, keyboards, computers – in the pop superstar’s house, where they stayed and crafted the 6-song project over the span of 4 days. “We gave her Christmas songs over trap beats,” Tommy Brown explains, adding that they brought in violin players and a ukulele player.

How’d Ariana Grande, Tommy Brown, and the team celebrate? With a trip to Disneyland. All songs on the Christmas & Chill EP were co-written by R&B singer/songwriter Victoria Monét. Having worked with Ariana Grande on her previous album releases, Yours Truly and My Everything, contributing production and songwriting, Tommy Brown and Victoria Monét are two staples in Ariana Grande’s rise to fame. Together, Tommy Brown and Victoria Monét have formed the VieTom imprint, which is branded to develop artists and songwriters.

Tommy Brown Background:

Tommy Brown wants to rewrite the music industry rulebook. The super producer, who has supplied marquee artists like Ariana Grande, T.I. and Chris Brown with boundary-shifting tracks, spent the past few years surveying the scene and witnessed how difficult it can be for up-and-comers to connect with more notable writers and producers. His solution: create the Facebook of the music community, where newer musicians can pay various price points and access exclusive instrumentals and get their music heard by a wider audience. In 2012, he signed with BMI, which in turn led to an independent production deal with Sony ATV. Since then, he’s become one of the hottest producers across genres, helming T.I.’s “New National Anthem,” G.O.O.D. Music’s “Sin City,” and four songs on Grande’s chart-topping sophomore album My Everything.

The Video:

Closing out what’s been a great return to form for the Houston legend this year, Trae Tha Truth shares a video for the Problem and Lil Boss-assisted Tha Truth Pt. 1 single “Yeah Hoe.” A song produced by Dnyc3 and Trent, guided by a G-Funk synth that bleeds Cali rap nostalgia, the Phillyflyboy-directed video finds Trae flexing atop the Warehouse Live entrance in East Downtown Houston. Problem checks in from Los Angeles before the clip returns to H-Town where Trae, Lil Boss, and their ABN crew mob out, backed by Cadillacs on swangas.

Earlier this month Trae Tha Truth announced Tha Truth Pt. 2, sharing the album’s first single,” Takers,” which debuted via XXL and features buzzing ATL rapper Quentin Miller. “Takers” is an instant great track with a pre-order of the album on iTunes. The second part of a two album series, Trae Tha Truth’s 8th solo album, Tha Truth 2, follows 2015’s Tha Truth, which included the popular singles “Trickin’ Every Car I Get” featuring Future and Boosie, and “Realigion” alongside DeJ Loaf. Trae will be heading out on his national Truth Tour starting on January 2016. Tha Truth 2 is slated to release Feb. 5th.
