Critical Praise for The Outfit, TX:

“The Outfit, TX is… mixing Texan traditions with a wide range of influences from New Wave to punk to vintage boom-bap.”Noisey

“…the best thing in rap today that nobody is talking about yet.” – MTV Hive

“…positively perfect.” – Complex

“The Outfit, TX is one of the best rap groups in Texas.” – PassionWeiss

“This is definitely a song I’d like to hear blasting out of a car.” – EARMILK

“Restrained but intricate screw-meets-funk delivery.”The FADER

The Song:
After touring with Run the Jewels late last year, Dallas trio The Outfit, TX (Mel, Dorian, and JayHawk) are prepping the long-awaited follow-up album to their acclaimed 2013 double album Cognac/Four Corner Room. On their HYPETRAK-premiered single “Big Daddy,” which they’ve already started servicing to strip club DJ’s in Texas, TOTX’s Mel raps a salacious chorus while adding a bit of Southern twang to the end of his bars. And after a verse from Mel, TOTX’s JayHawk adds some of his own flavor to the song with an edgy tone. The production, led by a throbbing bassline and a distorted synthesizer, is handled by Guerilla323.”‘Big Daddy’ personifies a philosophy that we three share regarding romantic relationships and their accompanying titles,” TOTX’s Mel explains. “We’ve been ‘boyfriends,’ ‘best friends,’ ‘playbrothers,’ ‘side-n*ggas,’ and all that other shit. At the end of the day, it’s all rhetoric. Just kick it with a man, woman. Get to know me. Let me get to know you. Let’s watch Bill Maher, and debate classism vs racism or some shit. Next, lets do something ratchet to balance it out like hit a BYOB stripclub on a weekday, and kill a full bottle of Crown Apple. Then, at the end of the night, or in the parking lot of the stripclub, give me that good stuff, and call me ‘Big Daddy.'”

“Big Daddy” comes not long after The Outfit, TX’s recently released video for their Maxo Kream-featured single, “Ü,” which debuted via Noisey. The single also serves as the latest release from the trio’s decorated catalogue of several videos and two full length albums, which has attracted interviews withNPR, Complex, and SPIN as well as an award for Best Rap Group from Dallas Observer in 2014. Additionally, the group was deemed “The Best Rap Group You’re Not Talking About (Yet)” by MTV Hive. Their forthcoming album will serve as a follow-up to 2013’s Cognac/Four Corner Room, which was a double album – Cognac showcasing rap and production by Mel and Four Corner Room showcasing rap and production from Dorian. Fans can catch The Outfit, TX on tour, dates and tickets here.

The Outfit, TX Background:

Born and raised in Dallas, producers and rappers Dorian, JayHawk, and Mel make up the hip-hop band The Outfit, TX. After forming while in school at University of Houston in 2006, they returned to Dallas to continue to work on their patented brand of “Cooly Fooly Space Age Funk.” Individually, each has their own respective sound and together, they expertly blend their unabashed Southern credo of smooth synth bass, moogs, 808s and synthesizers.

TOTX has performed with the likes of J. Cole, Wiz Khalifa, The Clipse, and Kendrick Lamar. They headlined their first sold out show at Warehouse Live in Houston, TX in March 2013, then hit the road, performing at several music festivals including A3C’s “Best in Texas” Showcase, and Spune’s Index Fest in Dallas, TX. The future holds much more for the three Southern gentlemen that comprise The Outfit,TX, who recently relocated back to Dallas from Houston. They might have put it best, describing their artistry as “one small step for Texas, one giant leap for Southern kind.”

EP: Victoria Monét – Nightmares & Lullabies: Act II

Premiered by Billboard, the California Singer/Songwriter Who’s Collaborated With Ariana Grande, T.I., and Nas Shares Luscious EP

    06.16.2015

Victoria Monet - NIGHTMARES AND LULLABIES ACT II

    Critical Praise for Victoria Monét:

“Victoria Monét proves that she clearly knows how to make a hit.” – Pigeons & Planes

“You may not know her name yet, but that’s about to change.” – Rap-Up

“Victoria Monét’s musical situation is improving with every new release” – HotNewHipHop

    The EP:

L.A. singer/songwriter Victoria Monét, whose writing credits include songs for Ariana Grande, Fifth Harmony, and Jordin Sparks, in addition to collaborations with Machine Gun Kelly, B.o.B., and Nas, is stepping into the spotlight with her Nightmares & Lullabies: Act II EP. The project, which premiered via Billboard, features T.I., and follows her Nightmares & Lullabies: Act I EP, which released late last year and included guests Ty Dolla $ign and B.o.B. “Nightmares & Lullabies is a metaphor for the juxtapositions one’s life can display – bad days versus the best ones and how they can play off of each other,” Monét explained to Billboard. “My voice represents the lullaby, and the tribal undertone in the music is dark like a nightmare.”

Victoria Monét has been building momentum for the release over the past month, sharing several singles which have each received a warm welcome. “‘High Luv’ blurs the lines between R&B and pop,” said Pigeons & Planes in their premiere post, “making it feel like the perfect song to take over the airwaves this summer.” Additionally, The FADER debuted the infectious “See the Light” single and V Magazine presented the nostalgic “’90s Babies” video, which HYPETRAK raved, “…everything about the video might feel nostalgic and bring back some memories of the music of a couple decades back, but the actual sound is modern, progressive, and showcases Monét’s forward-thinking artistic mindset.”

Executive produced by Tommy Brown, the luscious EP has the L.A. via Sacramento artist at her most innovative, with her dreamy vocals and nostalgic lyrics sitting atop production by Brown, Travis Sayles, and Mr. Franks. “As crazy as this sounds, the EP makes me feel like a mother,” Victoria says. “Strict with standards, protective and critical, but proud and anxious to share the beauty of it. It’s in my blood, my DNA, my soul.”

    Victoria Monet Background:

From her toddler days spent growing up in Sacramento, California, R&B singer Victoria Monet has used various creative mediums-dancing, singing, poetry-to express herself, using lessons gleaned from relationships and her interpretations of the world around her to find her niche as a sensual vocalist with unparalleled songwriting skills and, most importantly, a message that people can relate to.

Fans may recognize Monet from features on hits from T.I. and Machine Gun Kelly, but it was with her 2014 debut EP Nightmares & Lullabies – Act 1, which touts guest appearances from B.o.B and Ty Dolla $ign, that her artistic vision crystalized. Monet’s music may be intensely personal, but it’s relating to her listeners that keeps her motivated. “I feel I want to share my own story,” she says. “There’s a girl out there who was shy like me, who maybe didn’t know how to express herself any other way. I want to represent that person, the underdog that no one thought would make it and would just be submissive and not be heard.”

    Black Milk Background:

As one of the most celebrated producers and rappers of his generation of hip-hop artists, Black Milk has conditioned fans and critics to expect the unexpected with each release. Few producers have earned the notoriety and respect he has as a musician, and when that is coupled with commanding talent as an emcee, it’s no surprise that his solo releases are met with exalted anticipation. His new full-length album, If There’s A Hell Below, continues Black’s trend of releasing material that maintains his signature sound while pushing it into new territory. With more than a decade of industry experience and a rich catalog of recordings, Black Milk has transitioned from one of hip-hop’s young rising stars to a veteran with a uniquely well-rounded pedigree.

After scoring his first production credit for Slum Village as a teenager in 2002, he eventually worked closely with the group and co-produced much of their two following albums. His self-released, full-length project Sound of the City (2005) led to his first record deal, and he began to gain international attention for the soul-sample driven style on his proper solo debut Popular Demand (2007). With five solo rap albums (Popular DemandTronicAlbum of the YearNo Poison No Paradise and Glitches In The Break), an instrumental album (Synth or Soul), numerous collaboration albums (Caltroit with Bishop Lamont, The Set Up with Fat Ray, Black and Brown with Danny Brown, Random Axe with Sean Price and Guilty Simpson and Burning Stones with Mel), and 2 singles with Jack White behind him, Black Milk remains one of hip-hop’s most consistent artists.

    Critical Praise for Black Milk:

“Black Milk’s solo career represents a constant cycle of adopting and mastering new production styles and then abandoning them before they become crutches.” – Pitchfork

“His samples are elegant, his rhythms challenging and his drum kits tight.” – NPR

“Cross has no need for these extras; in his world of soul-tugging productions and machinegun-as-velvet delivery they are merely distractions. On this realization, and in the moment, it was hard not be floored by the obvious: this is what talent with genuine poise really looks and sounds like.” – Dallas Observer

“Striking an impressive balance between being rehearsed and spontaneous, he proved his chops as a multitalented artist once again.” – Okayplayer

“It feels like Christmas every time Black Milk blesses us with a new record.” – FreeOnSmash

    The Video:

While finishing up the second half of his North American dates on his Play Like Hell Tour, critically-acclaimed rapper and producer Black Milk releases the visuals to his If There’s a Hell Below track, “Story and Her.” The video, which illustrates the single about his high school unrequited love, comes after the song was marked as one of the strongest songs on his 2014 solo effort, If There’s a Hell Below, by several publications. In their review for the album, Exclaim! stated, “Black Milk mainly delves deeper into gritty, soulful grooves meshing samples and live instrumentation. This almost seamless synthesis comes to the fore on ‘Story And Her.'” Pitchfork, which gave the album a 7.3/10, wrote that the single is a “sprightly, smooth-jazz Tribe throwback.” Additionally, the publication reviewed the single’s lyrics “as trite and sanctimonious as can be…with a rhyme scheme that snaps into place as if only to tug the verse onward.” Now, the If There’s a Hell Below favorite is accompanied with its proper visuals.

The Eccentric Bay Area Rapper Enjoys Puerto Vallarta In GoPro-Filmed Visual, Premiered by Young California

    06.11.2015

    A_1_Sunday_Love
    Critical Praise For A-1:

“A-1′s style has a similar kind of funny, free-for-all feel as post-Mac Dre rappers like [Roach] Gigz, but has a sly rap style that is distinctly his own.” – The FADER

“Easily one of the illest emcees I’ve heard over the last few years.” – OkayPlayer

“…something that sounds so vital and absolutely hyphy that it pretty much had to come from the Bay.” – Noisey

    The Video:

Gearing up for summer, San Francisco’s  A-1 ventures to Puerto Vallarta for his “Sunday Love” visual, which premiered via Young California. Recorded with a GoPro camera, the video shows the quirky MC vibing out along the beach and boardwalk, while Mexico’s bright, colorful scenery gels perfectly with the upbeat song. “This entire video is pretty much just me documenting my vacation,” A-1 said, adding that “we filmed it all in late December but it was so hot and sunny that you would never be able to tell.” A single from his Thurlian mixtape, which released in March, the track finds A-1 remixing Kaytranada‘s “Seeu Enni Way” beat.

“This was my first time ever directing a music video and using a GoPro made the video seem professional when really we were just goofing around on vacation in Mexico,” A-1 explained. “Sunday Love” is the latest from a string of captivating visuals from the rapper. Last month, Noisey debuted “Invisible Man,” which showed harsh, contrasting views of 80s drug culture. Prior to that, The FADER premiered “Unpredictable (The Repo Man),” a take on the cult classic film that found A-1 soaring in a neon-lit flying car, and earlier this year FACT Mag hosted the rapper’s video for “Good People,” which was shot at an incredible 1400fps.

Thurlian released earlier this year with the MC remixing beats by genre-bending producers Sango, Mr. Carmack, Ryan Hemsworth, Stwo, and BEAR//FACE, while working original cuts by Mikos Da Gawd and Woostar. “Thurlian is a compilation of songs I’ve been recording over the past two years that all symbolize different aspects of what it means to be ‘Thurl,’ which is to Think (for oneself), Hustle (for one another), Understand (each other), and Really Live (one’s life to the fullest),” A-1 explained. “This project was inspired by my experiences while traveling, seeing different parts of the world and realizing that human suffering is a constant struggle everywhere. As someone with a voice and a following, I feel I have the power to influence those who are willing to listen, and therefore I think I’m somewhat obligated to use that voice for good.”

    A-1 Background:

Born Adam Traore, a first generation US citizen to West African and Italian parents, A-1‘s music is constructed around vivid stories of growing up in The City while searching for happiness and self awareness. After the release of After School Special, a mixtape based on 90s television shows, he gained a fan base through internet buzz while still living on his friend’s couch.  Soon after, he released his follow-up The Book Of Adam which was received so well, he quit his day job the day after the listening party.  With 2012’s The Thurl Tape, A-1 has been acknowledged by publications such as the FADER and Complex.  Equipped with a heart filled with passion, an insatiable desire for creativity, discerning eyes and ears for quality, and a plan to spread his music to as many people as possible, A-1 is poised to be the first name in music lover’s iPods in the very near future. A-1’s Thurlian mixtape released March 5, 2015.

MP3: Blanco (feat. Husalah) – “Molly & Amber” (Prod. by Bosko)

Teaming With the Grammy-winning Producer, the Bay Area Rappers Connect to Create a Minimalistic, Drug-Induced Love Ballad

    The Song:

Following feature stories in High Times and HipHopDX documenting a $50 million medical marijuana business that he and his brother started and fought against long-term jail sentences for, California rapper Blanco is preparing for the release of his Molly & Amber EP, which is street slang for MDMA and dabbing. Debuted by YouHeardThatNew, the EP’s title track finds Blanco rapping and harmonizing about his hustling mentality atop a piano-guided production. The project was produced in-full by Grammy-winning producer Bosko, who previously produced songs for E-40, Kanye West, J. Cole, and Big Boi. Additionally the project includes features from frequent collaborators Husalah, Messy Marv, and The Jacka.

“Molly & Amber” is the latest addition to Blanco’s already impressive list of collaborations, which include tracks with YGFreeway, Gucci Mane, and more. Blanco heated up the summer last year with “Block Party,” a joint effort with YG and producer duo Cookin’ Soul, which was praised by Complex, HotNewHipHop, and Stereogum, among others. Blanco’s extensive catalogue includes a series of music videos as well as projects with The Jacka, Nipsey HussleAraab Muzik, and Yukmouth and several solo projects following his 2011 debut, American Psycho. Produced entirely by Bosko, his upcoming Molly & Amber EP is set to drop this July through his self-made label, Guerilla Entertainment. In a recent interview with HipHopDX the Bay area native proclaimed, “I care more about the [music] I put out than I care about the sales. I care more about what I’m attempting to do. It’s about the whole journey.” Blanco’s journey continues next month with the Molly & Amber EP.

    Blanco Background:

Blanco (formerly Benny Blanco) is a rapper born in Berkeley, California but bred throughout the Bay Area. Fascinated by gangsta rap at an early age, Blanco began rhyming at 17. In 2004, he and his brother founded hip-hop label Guerilla Entertainment, which to date has released upwards of over 20 mixtapes and albums. As a member of rap trio The Yay Boyz with fellow label mates Taj-He-Spitz and Lil Hyfe, Blanco released Got Purp (Volumes 1 and 2), The Wizeguys, and full-length album Nosebleed Muzic. He has gone on to release several solo projects, including Blanco’s Way and American Pyscho, and more collaborative albums, including Jonestown with Messy Marv and Jacka, and his latest, Raw, with Nipsey Hussle. Blanco has also collaborated with Gucci Mane, Redman, Freeway, Freddie Gibbs and Styles P, and released projects with Araab Muzik and Yukmouth.

    MP3: RJD2 & STS – “High Life”

Debuted by Okayplayer, Producer/Rapper Duo RJD2 & STS Release Luxurious Loose Single

    06.11.2015

    STS x RJD2-Cover-01

Critical Praise for RJD2 and STS:

“The album shuffles between moody, soulful beats and triumphant, horn-anchored tracks” – Rolling Stone

“RJ’s well able to inject spirit and spontaneity into tunes new and old in the live setting, certainly better than most beatmakers and producers out there” –  Philadelphia Weekly

“[STS is] unique in style, creative in approach” – Red Bull Sound Select

“STS has the best of both worlds as far as what he offers as an MC: consistent bars, dazzling wordplay, and a Southern bravado” – HipHopWired

    The Song:

Frequent collaborators RJD2 and STS come together once again for their dream-filled single, “High Life.” Premiered by Okayplayer, the “lavish and soulful bonus cut,” which symbolizes STS’s aspirations of a life of luxury and comfort, is assisted by RJD2’s elegant production. RJD2’s use of piano riffs, frequent chime rolls, and boom-bap style drum kick, make way for STS’s talk of first class flights, penthouses, and beautiful women. In each chorus, STS raps, “I want the high life/I feel as though I know where I am headed but this is my life,” and, by the song’s conclusion, the duo persuade you not only to believe in their goal but also might just convince you to want to join them. Although the track currently doesn’t have a home on any upcoming EP or album, its upbeat and ambitious atmosphere should hold you for the rest of the summer.

Last month, Philadelphia-based producer/rapper duo RJD2 and STS released their triumphant self-titled collaborative album with a premiere via The A.V. Club, who raved “…simultaneously raucous and melodic, the record takes rap and tips it on its head a bit, blending everything from Ludacris to The Impressions.” In an interview with Complex, the duo spoke on the process of creating RJD2 x STS and working together to become a musical force unlike anything else in hip-hop today. “You take the rap style, the way that I rap, you put me on a beat and I could just go all day ’cause I can rap. That’s what Philly is and that’s what rappers in Philly do: They rap,” STS explained. “There was no thinking: This is the best work to date that I have ever done! As soon as we started doing the music, I was like, yeah, this is it… Basically, yes this is the best joint ever. I’m smiling ear-to-ear. This is crazy. It’s a work of art. That’s what it is, a great work of art.”

    RJD2 Background:

RJD2, a transplant via Ohio, has a history spanning back to the late 90’s indie hip-hop scene. After notable stops on both the Definitive Jux and XL labels, he ventured forth with his own label in 2009 (RJ’s Electrical Connections, which brings you this fine piece of work today). With a catalog of albums running back to 2002, he likely qualifies as an underground vet at this stage of his career. With the tunes“Ghostwriter” and the “A Beautiful Mine,” aka the Mad Men theme making their rounds on TV, his reach has continually spread beyond the sold out club dates and festival appearances of the last decade+.

    STS Background:

STS, aka Sugar Tongue Slim, is an Atlanta transplant who found himself amidst the orbit of Dre andVidal, Jazzy Jeff, Jill Scott, and the cast of players that were in and out of Larry Gold’s “The Studio.”This led to being a writer on Ciara’s “Oh,” working intimately with Def Jam. He was first introduced to the public on The Roots‘ Grammy-Nominated release, How I Got Over, where he was featured on the cuts, “Right On” and “Hustla.” Later that month he released Demand More II featuring the underground hits, “The People” and “In For The Kill.” He soon brought his G.O.L.D act to stage, setting off sold out shows for acts such as Travis Barker, 50 Cent, J-Cole, Big Sean, B.O.B and The Roots among others. That buzz resulted in a spotlight on MTV2’s Sucker Free Sunday as the featured act for XXL’s Show & Prove segment.

    The Video:

Gearing up for the release of his debut solo album Fire In the Church, Chicago rapper Montana of 300 freestyles over Bobby Shmurda‘s “Computers” in a hard-hitting visual, and is joined by 18 year-old rapper $avageFire In the Church is releasing December 1st, the one-year anniversary of Montana’s Cursed With a Blessing mixtape. “He’s closer to someone like Kevin Gates or Durk than say [Chief] Keef,” said Passion of the Weiss in a feature spotlighting Montana of 300 earlier this year. “At heart, he is a rapping-ass rapper, snapping at cyphers and shilling mixtapes since 10th grade. The sober son of a Vice Lord and a former crack addict, there’s a mixture of pain and aggression in most bars. You might mistake this for simplistic street shit, but there’s the sort of hunger and ferocity found in almost every great rapper that ever really started from the bottom.”

Often referred to as “Rap God,” Montana of 300 has been building strong momentum, dropping original hits like “Holy Ghost,” “Ice Cream Truck,” and “All I Ever Wanted,” along with an impressive string of remixes. The “Computers” freestyle is the latest from the Chicago rapper, whose remixes of Dej Loaf‘s Try Me,” Fetty Wap‘s Trap Queen,” OT GenasisCoco,” and Nicki Minaj‘s Chiraq have each accumulated millions of YouTube views. Along with Fire In the Church, Montana of 300 has a collaborative effort with longtime rap partner Talley of 300 slated for September.

    Montana of 300 Background:

Montana of 300 is an independent rapper from the South side of Chicago. Wearing a bandana underneath his rope like/twisted dreads and covered in tattoos, Montana’s YouTube presence has blown up, with his remixes of Dej Loaf’s “Try Me” racking in almost 8 million views and “Chiraq” clocking 7 million views, to name a few. Often referred to as “Rap God,” Montana of 300 got his start back in 2008 when he named himself after the movie 300, adopting the movie’s underlying motif “No surrender, no retreat” as his own anthem. Known for his back-to-back flurries of mind-blowing metaphors, unforgettable quotes, inspirational stories of struggle and his aggression, Montana’s music is spreading fast, keeping the people talking and running to tell the next. Being versatile and dropping hits like “Holy Ghost,” “Ice Cream Truck,” and “All I Ever Wanted,” he shows us that he’s way more than just another Chicago rapper. He never fails to crush all the competition and his fans go nuts every time. Montana of 300 has been turning down record deals, saying he’s comfortable with how he’s doing while planning on staying independent.

    The Song:

Oakland duo Main Attrakionz recently announced their return from a several year hiatus with an official release date for their long-awaited 808s & Dark Grapes III album, which will be released on June 30th via Neil Young‘s Vapor Records. On their latest single, “Dip,” the cloud rap pioneers MondreMAN and Squadda B channel their inner Freak Nasty with eccentric, weeded out rhymes. With several layers of percussion rattling throughout the song, producer duo Friendzone utilize glittery, video game-esque keys, making for a delicate but disjointed beat. “Dip” premiered via HotNewHipHop, who said “It’s yet another feel-good anthem in their repertoire, and should provide some much-needed chill in the next few months.”

Last month, the eccentric pair released their Kreayshawn-directed video single “Ain’t No Other Way” via The FADER, giving fans a smooth first offering from their forthcoming project. 808s & Dark Grapes III follows a stream of solo and collaborative releases in 2011, including I Smoke Because I Don’t Care About Death, The Shady Bambino Project, Dope Since ’91, and their most definitive statement to-date, 808s and Dark Grapes II, which received critical praise from PitchforkComplexSPINFact Magazine, and more. Squadda B and MondreM.A.N. have been rapping together for most of their lives, cultivating a passionate sound that is all their own, combining opaque atmospherics and lived-in reality rhymes. After nearly three years without releases, the duo is ready to bring their refreshed sound back to audiences. 808s & Dark Grapes III is slated to release this summer on June 30.

    Main Attrakionz Background:

Hailing from North Oakland, California, Squadda B and MondreM.A.N. of Main Attrakionz have been rapping together for most of their young lives. Early on, a shared love of rap music led them to put school on the back-burner and focus on producing music with a talented crew of local artists. Over the ensuing 7+ years, (and with an added assist from the world wide web and social media) Main Attrakionz have cultivated a unique and passionate sound, combining opaque atmospherics and lived-in reality rhymes, that stands as one of the most interesting and refreshing in the crowded and fractured world of today’s rap underground.

A relentless stream of solo and collaborative releases in 2011, including I Smoke Because I Don’t Care About Death, The Shady Bambino Project, Dope Since ’91, and their most definitive statement to-date, 808s and Dark Grapes II, have turned heads not only among those with an Internet connection and an interest in rap music, but have landed them acclaim from publications such as Pitchfork, The New York Times, Complex Magazine, The Fader, SPIN, and Fact Magazine.

The 22 Year-Old New York Rap Artist Explores His Transition Into Young Adulthood In Heartfelt, Hip-Hop-Meets-Indie-Rock There’s More To Life EP

    06.08.2015

    Front Cover

    The EP:

Prolific New York rap artist Dylan Owen has released his There’s More To Life EP, a story of transitioning into young adulthood and letting go of the person that he used to be. “Struggling to find my identity in this huge world, I reflect on the psychological adventures of my childhood and teenage years to discover why I am who I am,” explains the 22 year-old, whose music is influenced by a range of artists, including Atmosphere, Bright Eyes, Eminem, and Talib Kweli. “I started to come to grips with the things I won’t be able to do in life. There’s a lot of fear in that, but ultimately, I encourage myself and others who relate that there will be more to life than what we’ve known.”

There’s More To Life presents Dylan Owen’s organic hip-hop-meets-indie-rock sound with boom bap drums, live guitars and violins, antique pianos, and vintage lo-fi keyboards all in the same setting. The EP was written over the past few years, as Dylan Owen’s been living between NYC and his small hometown in Orange County, NY. In addition to cuts from DJ Rob Swift on “There’s More To Life,” which is over 100K plays on SoundCloud, the project was produced in-full by Skinny Atlas (whose credits include Tech N9ne, Krizz Kaliko, and Tank). “I wanted to bring my confessional, heartfelt storytelling to life with nostalgic instrumentation that reinforces the vocals/lyrics/message,” Dylan Owen explains. “What makes my perspective as an artist unique is clearer here than ever before.”

    Dylan Owen Background:

Dylan Owen is a rap artist from New York. With his own brand of heart-on-sleeve, confessional storytelling, he has built an undeniable fan following at a young age. His wordplay and multisyllabic patterns prove his proficiency as a rapper, while his writing feels more like that of a young storyteller who can also rhyme. Dylan left Cornell University in 2011 to develop as an artist in New York City.

In late 2012, Billboard elected Dylan a top-15 “Next Big Sound” artist based on his swiftly growing online buzz. Dylan has opened for Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa, Yelawolf, Chiddy Bang, Mac Lethal, Grieves, George Watsky, The Metermaids, Logic, Skizzy Mars, Asher Roth, and many others. Dylan will be releasing music and videos leading up to a new project, There’s More To Life, the next installment in his coming-of-age story.

    Wasiu Background:

For Wasiu, being a pariah has always been a constant. A child of divorce from a Nigerian Muslim father and Haitian Protestant-Christian mother, he was torn between worlds, seen by both communities as impure, and a “mixed breed”—not entirely Haitian, not quite Nigerian. Even though he’s Québecois (a Québec native), his immigrant parents tainted his claim to the province. Raised by his mother after his father moved to Toronto, he felt obliged to fit in with her side of the family. Resentments towards his father’s beliefs and culture led him to drop his father-given middle name—Wasiu—so that he wouldn’t be teased in his predominantly white school, where he battled black stereotypes by pushing his intellect past expectations.

Overcoming adversity and using those lessons as lyrical fuel is Wasiu’s strongest suit. He is preparing his debut album which funnels his life experiences into a culturally defining opus that balances both optimistic and pessimistic perspectives on human themes. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad,” he says, “and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

“Many rappers twice his age would be wise to take notes…” – Okayplayer

“Wasiu is pretty much the embodiment of Montreal’s cultural shift.” – Noisey

“Wasiu has exhibited a desire to creatively tackle a variety of topics, and he raps about them in a way that proves he’s a more-than-formidable emcee.” – HYPETRAK

    The Song:

Haitian-Canadian rapper Wasiu has been building a name for himself with the release of several tracks this year. On his latest release, “I Got It,” he teams up with fellow MTLien, RAW Records co-founder/producer Dear Lola, who remixes Jay-Z and Kanye‘s infectious “What U Need” with a funky bassline and dance floor-ready swing. The song premiered via HYPETRAK, with Wasiu weaving comical yet determined metaphorical rhymes into the song. “Knew she was hip I can tell by her waistline” he says, later claiming that he’s “tryna book a thousand gigs like a terabyte.”

“Dear Lola (co-founder of RAW Records) sampled Kanye West & Jay Z’s “Gotta Have It” and I immediately felt like they gotta have my music. My music is that ’80s crack shit, that classic shit, ‘I Got It,'” Wasiu said. “The song is about having the hottest shit that everybody wants, but because the demand is so high, so is the price. Sometimes, you give suppliers consignment, and they don’t bring your money back, which is when you have to go and handle them with extreme measures. The weather is getting hot, this is my summertime anthem… Back in the kitchen, lets get to cooking, and turn these customers to fiends. This is that crack music.”

The 24 year-old rapper first debuted back in January with his Kaytranada-produced video single “Physical,” and has since gone on to show his range of politically-charged, socially conscious, and self-confident rhymes. “My music is empowerment, and defeat. It’s the whole spectrum,” he explains. “I’m showing what people view as both the good and the bad… and how without the bad, you can’t have the good, and so you start to appreciate the bad… for the good.”

    The Song:

“His voice sounds somewhere along the lines of Sticky Fingaz or Nine, with a little bit of a Dr. Dre undertone,” said HipHopCanada of Ottawa-based rapper VNCHY, who just released “19+,” the first single off his forthcoming Neverland EP. The track has the young, Congo-born rapper presenting his rugged rhymes and deep, raspy voice atop dark but elegant production by Prezident Jeff, whose credits include Little Simz and Kevin Gates. “19+” premiered via EARMILK, who said, “With swirling, haunting vocals and fantastic lyrical content and flow, we’re impressed at how incredibly far the young talent has been able to get in his short life-span. We can’t stop playing this, and neither will you.”

“During ’19+’ I was in a very rebellious mentality. The very title speaks to the idea of a ‘transitional phase,’ however, that phase is yet to be fully understood in capacity,” VNCHY explains. “During the creation process I had newly turned 19 and felt that while those around me viewed such a phase as a time to party and exploit all the freedoms that come with being a legal adult (in Canada), all I wanted was to exercise my other wants and desires. I wanted to exercise such desires as running my own business with my own personal team. I wanted to properly put my family and team on a level we all desired. However, my goals didn’t finish there for I have bigger goals and bigger plans at such a young age. Progression has and always will be a must.”

VNCHY has opened for the likes of Big K.R.I.T. alongside Two-9 and has performed alongside Post Malone on his White Iverson Tour, and now, at the ripe age of 19, he’s ready to take his distinct sound to the spotlight. Stay tuned for his Neverland EP, releasing later this summer.

VNCHY and his MVMNT Collective team are hosting a 19+ event in Toronto on June 5th at Sterling Lofts.

    The Background:

VNCHY has been making music since the ripe ages of 15 but it wasn’t until last year that his progress made exponential leaps. He began his surge by gathering together a team of like-minded individuals and creating a business entitled MVMNT Collective Inc. Through the creation of an entity that is distinct from him yet represents anything and everything he believes in, VNCHY was able to open himself up to many more business ventures and opportunities that would not have before been possible on his own.

He released his first single, “Bane,” on SoundCloud, which was able to garner over 6,000 listens simply through word of mouth and promotion from close friends and family. He followed up his initial release with his track “Godlevel,” which was instantly picked up by Noisey, iLuvLola, Boi1da, AshleyOutrageous, Mechanical Dummy, and more and now has over 7,000 listens on SoundCloud. These releases helped VNCHY create a nice buzz for himself which led to the creation of a loyal fan base allowing him to begin doing performances as many people started showing interest in wanting to hear him perform live. As such, VNCHY has opened for the likes of Big K.R.I.T. alongside Two-9 at Cabaret Underworld in Montreal and has performed alongside Post Malone on his White Iverson Tour.
