The EP:

L.A. via Florida singer/songwriter Kyle Dion takes us for a ride in his new EP, Painting Sounds. “The 21-year-old wunderkind isn’t one to follow trends,” Billboard said in their premiere of the release, which ranges from bright, rhythmic dance floor vibes to slinky late night R&B cuts, with jazz chords and hints of funk. “I named it Painting Sounds because I wanted to play with this sound I had created for myself, I wanted to push the sound past its limits sonically and lyrically,” Kyle Dion explains. “I knew I wanted to do a project where every song would have a completely different vibe from the next while still keeping that undercurrent of my own style.”

Kyle Dion has been spreading his smooth voice through collabs with artists like Austin Mahone and Kehlani, converting listener after listener into fans. Premiered on radio with Ebro on Beats 1/Apple Music, 21-year-old Chicago emcee/producer Saba shares “GPS,” a vibed-out track which features his father Chandlar and BJRKNC. Saba will be co-headlining Pigeons & Planes x Staple Pigeon‘s No Ceilings in NYC at Rough Trade on January 20th.

“Making music with my dad is always an almost unbelievable process,” Saba explained to The FADER in their online streaming premiere. “I remember what it was like watching him in the studio, watching him produce and perform and stuff like that when I was younger and wanting to do that when I got older. It’s a very interesting relationship, I remember when I turned 18, I was in New Jersey with my brother Joseph Chilliams, and our Dad bought us studio time and just basically left us there for a week and wanted an entire project done by the end. Working with him on ‘GPS’ was no different, I feel like he’s always been one of those people continuously pushing me in the right direction musically.”

In 2014, Saba released his breakthrough solo project, ComfortZone, followed by his 2015 instrumental EP, SpareChange!, which earned one of the highest beat scene praises when “Bad Nature” was included in a recent Soulection Radio Show. In October 2015, Saba collaborated alongside Chance the Rapper on the fellow Chicago artist’s “Angels” single, which they debuted on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Following a live performance debut at halftime of the Sacramento Kings vs. L.A. Lakers game in Sacramento, Bay Area rapper/producer Iamsu!‘s self-produced “Game Time” is the latest single from his forthcoming Kilt 3 project. Along with Iamsu!’s performance, they celebrated the third annual Bollywood Night at the arena, a tradition the Kings’ owner Vivek Ranadivé brought with him after he became the owner of the team in 2013. The game and Iamsu!’s performance were televised in India. Iamsu! is friends with and has collaborated Vivek Ranadivé’s daughter, singer Anjali Wood. The HBK Gang representer shared some cool photos meeting Vlade Divac and Reggie Miller on IG.

“Game Time” is the second single from Iamsu!’s forthcoming Kilt 3 project. While no release date has been set for the project yet, Iamsu!’s been teasing Kilt 3 for some time, having shared the cover art and tracklist on Instagram at the end of 2015. In addition to today’s release of “Game Time,” Iamsu! shared loose single “DOGS,” produced by Trauma Tone. Later this month, Iamsu! will be performing in NYC at SOB’s on Weds., Jan. 27th.

Houston motormouth Maxo Kream is a force to be reckoned with. Maxo Kream Background:

Upon meeting him, gangsta rapper isn’t the impression that most would get from buzzing Houston emcee, Maxo Kream, age 23. He has a surprisingly goofy and playful demeanor, often cracking self-aware jokes and displaying a smile with showcases either his gold grin or his trademark gap in the upper row of this teeth. But, make no mistake, Maxo’s backstory is a tale consisting of crime and death that would catch the attention of the most jaded followers of gangsta/trap rap.

Inspired by his college trip to SXSW and the fact that other street cliques throughout Houston such as FDAB (founded by late rapper T.O.Y, a childhood friend and Crip associate of Maxo) and MashMode (which has now resulted in the buzzing careers of Houston rap duo, The Sauce Twinz) were transitioning into music as a form of expression, Maxo and his younger cousin Lyndon (rap moniker Lyndo C), jumped into music. Now, front and center is Maxo Kream’s sophomore project, #Maxo187. With big name features and outstanding production, Maxo intends to show that he can compete with any emcee in the game.

The Video:

Chicago’s ProbCause is talented with more than just his words- the multi-faceted emcee is also a Graffiti artist-turned-graphic designer and animator. Today he’s sharing “Once Upon a Time in Shaolin,” an animation based on the infamous Martin Shkreli‘s $2 million-dollar purchase of the coveted Wu-Tang album. “The characters were all people who were actually involved in this very bizarre story,” explains ProbCause, who collaborated with Elijah Alvarado on the video. “It seemed like every day we were working on this there was a new twist on the plot. We also threw Donald Trump in the mix just ’cause that phone call to Method Man was too funny not to animate!”

ProbCause previously shared another animated video for his “Same Thing” single, produced by Drew Mantia from the A3C Volume 5 album. “I grew up drawing and was always attracted to graffiti,” ProbCause explained to Mass Appeal for the premiere post. “I started painting pretty young but got arrested a few too many times. It basically got to a point where I was putting my college scholarship on the line if I got arrested again, so I decided to chill out a little bit in my 20’s.”

ProbCause landed on the broader audiences radar in 2013 with his Chance the Rapper-assisted “LSD” video single, which was later remixed by The Hood Internet. The original song was the pair of Chicago rappers’ second time working together, with Action Bronson having joined them on “Three Course Meal.” This year ProbCause released his album Drifters, debuted by Red Bull Music, which revealed the highly collaborative and vibrant musical community within the city of Chicago. “I work with a lot of really talented musicians in Chicago so it was a very organic thing to involve them in the production process,” ProbCause explained. “[This album] is much more musical than anything I’ve made in the past.” Drifters followed an 18-city tour with Lil Dicky that spanned the East Coast and South in June, and came prior to ProbCause’s own headlining Drifters Tour. The EP:

“The creation of the Evangeline EP came about fairly effortless,” Miami artist Sylvan LaCue revealed to Pigeons & Planes in their premiere of the 5-track project that they explained “shares stories of self-discovery.” Produced entirely by Flo-Fi Collective’s Fortune, who contributed to GoldLink’s The God Complex, the EP finds 25-year-old Sylvan LaCue glowing with excitement and as vulnerable as any artist you’ve heard before. “Fortune & I were going back & forth for about a week during Thanksgiving weekend earlier this year. He provided the soundtrack to the story I wanted to convey. I cut four of the songs in a matter of a week, and pulled together ‘First Flight To Oakland’ the day before the EP was scheduled to be released.”

Formerly known as QuESt, Sylvan LaCue teased the Evangeline EP earlier this week with the “Caravan 04” single, featuring Linzi Jai, which debuted via Complex. “It’s clear on his latest track ‘Caravan 04’ that LaCue is finding inspiration in the right places,” they said. “The craziest thing about evolution is that you never see it coming,” Sylvan LaCue expressed in a recent journal to his fans. Last year Sylvan LaCue abandoned his deal with Visionary Music Group, which required him to focus on his career alone. After falling in love during a trip to Oakland, he decided to start going by his real name, Sylvan LaCue, with the QuESt alias having become more of a character that he was growing out of. Learning to embrace himself helped Sylvan LaCue explore his artistry even further, as he began working on music with a group of producer friends. Titled after his aforementioned girlfriend, the Evangeline EP is both a post-Far From Familiar story and a prequel to an album slated for early 2016.

Flirting with pop, electronic music, and RnB is newcomer Quiñ, a singer/songwriter from Pasadena, California, poised to turn heads with her effortless style of self-described Fantasy Soul Music. Says Quin, “I named it Fantasy Soul Music because naturally this is the music my soul sings, and Fantasy because that’s where my imagination gets its inspiration.” Filling the room with her sun-drenched vocals, Quiñ soars over Rich Skillz‘ hazy production. Houston motormouth Maxo Kream made splashes earlier this year with his MAXO 187 project, and now he’s back with a collaboration with Atlanta rapper Key!, “Out the Door.” Produced by Wolfe De Mchls, “Out the Door” is exactly as it sounds – Maxo boasts about selling drugs, all you have to do is ring his doorbell. “I made the song just being tired of roachin’ ass niggas in my trap spot, the ones that try to smoke all your shit before they go home and smoke their shit,” Maxo Kream explained to Complex, adding that the session was done on drugs in an L.A. studio. The Houston-bred Crip-turned-rapper goes “from a one to a metric ton” before he passes the baton to Key! for the song’s second verse.

Maxo Kream previously released the ELEVATOR Mag-premiered video for “Issues,” a bonus cut from Maxo 187, which Complex named One of the Best Albums of 2015. The video followed another collab with Fredo Santana, “Big Homies,” a loose single that the duo released over summer. Atlanta singer/songwriter Verse Simmonds (credits: Justin Bieber, Usher) teamed with fellow ATL hitmaker K Camp for their sultry “Mona Lisa” visual, which premiered today via Billboard. The Virgin Islands-born and raised artist finds perfection in a priceless one-of-one that he deems the latest attraction – the “Mona Lisa” – of his own artshow. K Camp quickly shows he’s also a man of the arts, comparing himself to Picasso and Michelangelo. The audio of the track premiered earlier this year via Complex, who said the “final result is an infectious R&B turn-up track that has club anthem potential and should easily get fans ready for what Verse Simmonds has coming in the near future.”

“I’ve known K Camp for a few years now. He’s one of my lil bros in the game – I been rocking with him before things started taking off for him so we have always been good,” Verse Simmonds previously explained to Complex. “I sent the record off to Camp to record his verse while was in the road and I believe he recorded his verse in his hotel room. Nonetheless, he had it back to me by the next day!”

Earlier this month, Verse Simmonds shared a dancehall remix to his “Situationships” single, which debuted via LargeUp, after being featured on tracks including Kid Ink‘s “Diamonds & Gold” remix alongside Chris Brown and French Montana, and Gucci Mane’s Trapology stand-out “Ass Everywhere.” Verse Simmonds has been sharing infectious tracks all year, including the Jeremih-assisted “All I Want.” A go-to writer for Chris Brown, most notably contributing to his songs “New Flame” and “Drunk Texting,” Verse Simmonds is also a frequent Gucci Mane collaborator in addition to being credited as a writer on K. I learned what’s up can come down and what’s down can come up in this game, so remember it never happens when you want it to, only when it’s time to. The underground king Yung Ralph has been garnering mainstream attention in recent months for the Fetty Wap-assisted “Act A Fool,” with the audio debuting on The FADER and the video on WorldStarHipHop, and also his Young Thug collab “Bands” which premiered via Noisey. The ATL emcee’s inimitable voice and heavy sound has helped him gain traction for his latest album, with HotNewHipHop saying that Yung Ralph “is one to look out for… as he boasts a unique, gritty flow.” For many, including Kevin Gates, it’s Yung Ralph’s rhymes that stick. Yung Ralph’s lyrics are genuine, honest, and impactful, filled with gems share a story of someone that’s dealt with a significant amount struggles and successes, with humility and loyalty being his pillars for life – as is evident in “Everyday” which was debuted on Passion of the Weiss.

2016 hasn’t arrived yet, but it’s already looking to be a big year for Vokab Kompany. The San Diego electronic-rap group’s album The Good Kompany is slated to release on January 13th. The album’s second single, “View of My Life,” follows “Kaleidoscope,” which release earlier this year and has surpassed 35K plays. Debuted by EARMILK, “View of My Life” releases with an accompanying music video that finds Vokab Kompany emcees Rob Hurt and Burkey Baby embracing friendships as they’re cruising the SoCal streets, hosting a party on the balcony of their beachside home, and even heading out to sea.

Vokab Kompany’s song “World Wide” is featured in trailers for the Brothers Grimsby film, which stars Sacha Baron Cohen and Penelope Cruz and will release next year. Vokab Kompany are two MC/singers from San Diego, backed by their 4 piece band of awesome. Their live show combines multiple synths/keys with bass/drums and a violin to create a sound that doesn’t quite adhere to a specific genre, but seems to fit the bill with several.

Their new album, VKCE, a collaboration effort with up and coming production/ musician duo Crush Effect (featuring members of Funk/Jamband legend Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe), fill a void at the intersection of the hip-hop and EDM worlds. VKCE is hip-hop, it’s electronic, it’s indie – it’s a shout out to the past, and a taste of the future. The team has been blessed with a slew of great press. Singer-songwriter Verse Simmonds (credits: Justin Bieber, Usher) and the Thomas brothers of R. City, whose Adam Levine-assisted “Locked Away” single reached the No. 1 spot on Billboard’s Pop Songs chart in Oct., have been putting on for their birthplace, the Virgin Islands. While R. City immigrated from St. Thomas to Atlanta, Simmonds has remained a nomad having spent time living in Florida, Los Angeles, and currently in Atlanta since leaving the Virgin Islands. The long-time friends have now teamed up for a Dancehall remix to Simmonds’ hit single “Situationships.” The Dancehall remix is produced by The Dictatorz and also features Orlando, FL singer and VVS Society artist Raheem.

“R.City and I are brothers from another mother!” Verse Simmonds tells LargeUp in their premiere of the remix. “We met when we were in middle school and have been best friends ever since.” The song provides an honest perspective on many relationships today, as Simmonds explores alternatives that could allow both parties to be more open about their intentions. “It has always been a plan of mine to create a full body of work specifically geared towards my Caribbean roots and you can expect a lot more from me in that vein in 2016,” Simmonds says.

Prior to the “Situationships” remix, Verse Simmonds linked with K Camp for “Mona Lisa,” which premiered via Complex, who said the “final result is an infectious R&B turn-up track that has club anthem potential and should easily get fans ready for what Verse Simmonds has coming in the near future.” The single followed the Jeremih-assisted “All I Want.” A go-to writer for Chris Brown, most notably contributing to his songs “New Flame” and “Drunk Texting,” Verse Simmonds is also a frequent Gucci Mane collaborator in addition to being credited as a writer on K. Michelle’s “Hard To Do” and Fifth Harmony’s “Top Down.” With an impressive track record, the multi-faceted Virgin Islands-born artist has shown that his songwriting for others can just as easily be translated into hits of his own.
