“We just might have discovered the next major R&B star.” – NYLON Magazine
“Every few years an artist comes along that stops you dead in your tracks. Disrupts you from what you’re doing. I had that moment about a year ago when clicking play on Nylo’s Soundcloud page.” – Fake Shore Drive
“This track feels like you’re spinning in a field with gold dust being poured over your head.” – Singers Room
“It was obvious that this Chicago girl with the pipes of an angel is on the cusp of a hellish ride to stardom.” – Pigeons And Planes
“It’s not surprising Nylo has attracted such a talented cast of individuals around her because her voice really does shine.” – HypeTrak
“While Nylo may be very much part of a trend rather than dictating it, she still is delivering more realized music than many of her blog-friendly peers due to both her airy voice and an instinct for hooks.” – Pitchfork
“Devoid of sentimentality or melodramatic emotion, her writing is like that of a brutally honest singer-songwriter’s, transferred onto bleeding edge R&B and replete with kitchen-sink, Soundcloud-influenced production.” – SPIN
Nylo is a singer/songwriter with a sound that can be best described as “Hybrid R&B,” including elements of rhythm and blues, hip-hop, EDM and classic soul. Born and raised in Chicago, she started writing snippets in her notebooks and setting them to the music she created on the piano in the neighborhood church. As her musical journey brought her out to Los Angeles, Nylo caught the eyes and ears of a few key bloggers in 2012 when she released her five song EP Memories Speak. She has garnered comparisons to Aaliyah and Lauryn Hill, and was called music’s best-kept secret. Nylo, however, won’t be a secret much longer, as she counts stars such as Nas and Mac Miller as fans and supporters. Nas even called Nylo his “favorite new artist.” She currently lives in California where she is putting the final touches on her next projects: Indigo Summer, which is slated for release on July 16th, and Indigo Rose, which will drop in the fall.
[wpex click for full bio]Every few years a talent emerges that can shift the course of music. It’s something different. It’s powerful. It’s moving. And Chicago songstress Nylo has positioned herself to be at the forefront of music’s next shift. With one of the most beautiful and original voices of the past 30 years, Nylo is poised to be the next star from Chicago’s current musical renaissance. With a sound that can be best described as “Hybrid R&B,” Nylo’s unique brand of music includes elements of rhythm and blues, hip-hop, EDM and classic soul.
Her journey started in Chicago, where she began to write, record and perform music at an early age. After teaching herself to play piano by ear, Nylo, who was mesmerized by the sounds of gospel, would sneak into a neighborhood church to practice on their pianos after hours, because there wasn’t one available in her family home. On a whim and thanks to the urging of a friend, Nylo began performing in smoky Chicago bars and nightclubs that she was far too young to be in. Her style resonated with the crowds, and the soulful gypsy bounced around the country for a few years before landing in Los Angeles.
The self-taught musician began to make waves in the City of Angels, where she quickly caught the attention of industry insiders and critics. Her debut release, a free project entitled Memories Speak, hit the internet in spring of 2012, and was a surprise hit. The album passed through the hands of some of music’s top tastemakers, and landed on a handful of ‘Best Of’ year-end lists. She garnered comparisons to Aaliyah and Lauryn Hill, and was called music’s best-kept secret. Nylo, however, won’t be a secret much longer, as she counts stars such as Nas and Mac Miller as fans and supporters. Nas even called Nylo his “favorite new artist.”
Over the course of the past year, Nylo has been holed up in the studio crafting two new EPs, to pick up where Memories Speak left off. Each project has a different vibe and feel, so expect one to impact in the summer (Indigo Summer), while the other will hit in the fall (Indigo Rose). With Indigo Summer on the horizon, Nylo describes the project as “colorful and vibrant, with a different tone than Memories Speak.” She also thanks her fans for being patient, and is beyond excited to share her new music with the world: “I’m so happy, and the feeling is indescribable of how excited I am to share this piece of music with the world. I’ve spent the last year of my life working on it, and to be able to give it out and share it with people is a feeling I can’t explain. I can’t wait for the world to hear it.”
