Video: Nef The Pharaoh – “Beat That Vest Up” ft. ShooterGang Kony (Prod. by DTB)
The Two NorCal Firebrands Warn Their Enemies That They Can’t Hide in the Latest Video Single from Nef’s Upcoming Mushrooms & Coloring Books Album
“It’s been nearly three years since Nef The Pharaoh took the Bay Area by storm with his breakout hit ‘Big Tymin’.’ Since then, under the tutelage of E-40, the South Vallejo rapper has become an ambassador of the region in his own right, championing artists like SOB X RBE, OMB Peezy, and others.” – The FADER
“it’s a joyous, melodic project with the old school, timeless feel we’ve come to expect from Nef the Pharaoh. Do yourself a favor and play this in a car as soon as physically possible.” – NOISEY
“…the best rapper from Vallejo since the last great rapper from Vallejo [Mac Dre]” – Passion of the Weiss
“[Nef the Pharaoh] distinguished himself in the last couple years as one of the Bay Area’s most exciting and charismatic rappers – possesses the wit, versatility, and magnetism that might land him a larger, nationwide audience.” –Pitchfork
“Nef the Pharaoh runs neck-and-neck with Kodak Black as the most promising up-and-coming rapper who can’t yet rent a car.” – SPIN
“There may be no rapper working right now who brings more good cheer and positive vibes than Vallejo’s Nef the Pharaoh” – Noisey
Fusing the old and new school with aplomb, few rappers of his generation can go bar-for-bar with Nef The Pharaoh. Serving up a mob-flavored slapper, Nef struts his stuff on “Beat That Vest Up,” his new video single. Produced by DTB, one of the Bay Area’s most reliable purveyors of regional fire, “Beat That Vest Up” finds a snarling Nef unleashing his aggression, coming straight for the neck of an unfortunate enemy: “The sun was peeking through the clouds, it was still hella early/This n**** scared of the Chang, a little bird told me/And I’on know if you don’t got something, but f*ck your dead homies.” Premiered by The FADER, who called the song “a two-and-a-half minute adrenaline hit,” the track features an appearance from Nef’s KIL FMB cohort, Sacramento rhymer ShooterGang Kony, who contrasts Nef’s animated anger with a steel-eyed intensity: “Hit his dirty-ass dreads and made his hair curly.” In the video, the two rappers and their posses cook out in a countryside trailer park, before they retreat to a dimly-lit cabin to plot their next move.
Says Nef The Pharaoh to The FADER, “I don’t promote violence, but this tracc puts you in murder mode. It’s a real gritty song about fonk hours.”
Directed by Marco Alexander, “Beat That Vest Up” is the latest video from Nef’s upcoming album Mushrooms & Coloring Books, following the NSFW clip for “TYP,” which features a cameo from Too $hort, and the uber-local “South Vallejo.” The new video also follows “High Voltage,” the album’s pressure-cooker of a lead single, blessed by a guest verse from Tyga.
Spanning 16 tracks, Mushrooms & Coloring Books builds on the foundation of Bay Area rap music, spicing it up with a different sonic element on each summer-ready track. Running the gamut from mob music to electro-funk to smooth jazz to Ibiza-friendly dance-rap, Mushrooms & Coloring Books proves Nef’s endless adaptability, weaving his malleable flow between hits of acid bass, breaking into nursery rhyme patter, and even flashing a skill with melody when the occasion calls. Featuring appearances from Tyga, Sada Baby, ALLBLACK, Slimmy B of SOB x RBE, Rexx Life Raj, ShooterGang Kony, LOE Gino, and Scando The Darklord, and with production from Brodinski along with Bay Area mainstays like Djfresh and DTB, Mushrooms & Coloring Books releases on August 14th via Sick Wid It Records/EMPIRE.

Breaking through with his self-titled 2015 EP and its hit single “Big Tymin‘,” the 23-year-old Nef The Pharaoh quickly established himself as one of the most unique and popular emcees in the Bay. Signed to E-40’s Sick Wid It Records, the charismatic emcee is a fixture on regional radio, releasing an acclaimed collaborative EP with Cardo Got Wingz (Kendrick Lamar, Drake) in 2016 and hitting in 2017 with the single “Bling Blaow,” which features Slimmy B of SOB x RBE. In April 2018, Nef shared his debut album The Big Chang Theory, which earned praise from Noisey, who raved “it’s a joyous, melodic project with the old school, timeless feel we’ve come to expect from Nef the Pharaoh. Do yourself a favor and play this in a car as soon as physically possible,” and Pitchfork, who said “Nef is the rare rapper who whose music feels free—free of narrative cohesion, outside interference, or any sense of pressure.” This past summer, Nef shared Porter2Grape, an action-packed 5-track collaborative EP with L.A. rapper 03 Greedo. The blistering EP, with the single “Ball Out,” featuring ALLBLACK, and the Pitchfork Best New Track “Blow-Up Bed,“ is currently available for stream and purchase via EMPIRE.
