Inspired by artists such as D’Angelo, Alice Coltrane, and Joni Mitchell, Denmark’s Nanna.B crafts future-focused, textured soul music with a refined sensuality and an activist mindset. Looking to make her mark in the American R&B scene, Nanna.B announces the Golden EP, a gorgeous slice of electronic neosoul. Sharing genre-fluidity and expressive vocal stylings with her artistic heroes, Nanna.B floats above forward-looking, yet nostalgic instrumentals, slyly crafting feminist messages with her honeyed singing voice. Born in Denmark and based in Los Angeles, Nanna.B established her presence in the L.A. underground with her debut album Vitaphone, catching the attention of Aaron Byrd from KCRW who introduced her to Anderson .Paak’s manager Adrian Miller. Her Golden EP, following the Billboard–premiered artist anthem “Where is the $$$?,” releases on July 21st via LoBudgetChild Music / Powered By Xyion / EMPIRE.
“The Golden project is basically about the many shades of love and lust,” explains Nanna.B. “It’s inspired by different relationships but could pretty much describe one from the meeting and establishment of common grounds on ‘Golden’ to the all-consuming passion on ‘Apocalyptic Love,’ the ‘now i need my space and I got shit to do’ vibes on ‘Steady Line’ to the call for universal love energy on ‘Antidote.'”
Today, Nanna.B shares the first taste of the new project with her otherworldly video for “Golden,” the project’s title track. Filmed either in the sand dunes of California or on another, funkier planet, “Golden” is a wildly creative and unconventional clip. Decked out in golden jewelry and a gold dress, Nanna.B plays the siren song for Odd Future’s Hodgy, who provides a tongue-twisting and playfully romantic guest verse, who tracks her through the desert until he finds her on a mountaintop. Produced by Anderson .Paak, the track is both futuristic and naturalistic, with propulsive rubbery bass, soulful guitar, and analog synth effects underlying Nanna.B’s questioning and uncertainty when it comes to her love. Premiered by Highsnobiety, “Golden” is a major step forward for a promising young artist.
Explains Nanna.B: “The ‘Golden’ video is filmed on the planet Au, located in a neighboring galaxy, which is a place of higher frequencies I sometimes visit in my dreams. Remember that suitcase with the golden light in Pulp Fiction? Yeah, that’s what this song is about. Protecting your treasures. There’s layers to this song really, but let’s just say that this guy I recently rejected hit me back with a ‘you must think the pussy is golden or something’ text, so as of now this song is for him. ‘Golden’ is a reminder to all the women out there, including myself, to protect their power, their womb, their gold. You’re divine, be aware who you share your energy and body with but also allow yourself to open up when you do meet that king that sees you. Navigating that is the main theme off this song.”
